Day 22: National Poetry Month
There’s a forest fire in the Croatan National Forest a few miles away from me. Close enough so we have air quality alerts and I got ash in my hair when I walked my dog yesterday. And there was a meteor shower last night but I didn’t even try to watch it because of the ash. But I was sad about it. It occurred to me how very subjective our experiences are. The trees are dying. People are risking…

The smoke has reached as far as my area. It's very yellow outside right now. So far no ash or anything falling yet.

Damn! I didn’t know the Croatan National Forest was on fire, OR that the smoke would be blowing this way today!
I was bright and sunny, all blue sky, and I had walked out to the swamp to look at the wild irises blooming and the Canadian geese (the first out there in 20 yrs! Long story). As I was about to head back I noticed the light looked wrong. Rosey, yellowed, muted…..
The lighting of smoke filled skies!
Across the swamp the blue sky was now a wall of pinkish cloud. Smoke. A LOT of smoke!
I haven’t seen smoke like that here since the wildfires more than a decade ago. The smoke that wrecked my lungs for life.
I rushed back as fast as I could, short of running. My ankle braces don’t let me run, even if I could stand the pain. Besides, deep breathing would be worse if the smoke over took me.
I was desperate to stay ahead of it, in the blue. Just get to the house before it reached me.
It reached me, just as I got to Ryoga’s. The pinkish orangish clouds were over me and settling. The haze started.
I felt it before I smelled it. Grittiness on my teeth, my throat raw…and then the heart racing started. My heart racing spells can be triggered by my breathing, or rather lack of breathing.
Thank goodness I wasn’t too far from the house. Unfortunately damage has been done. I’m clicking when I breathe and it feels like my entire respiratory system has been rubbed with sandpaper. The coughing has stopped the pulse is back to normal, but a headache has started. My lungs feel coated with goo.
Worst of all, I’m unexpectedly trapped inside. I still needed to put meds on the dogs, haul up the trash can from road before someone hits it, and a dozen other things I needed to do this afternoon. I wasn’t expecting this at all!
Outside the windows the world looks like it’s under yellow lights. I CAN’T go outside until the wind shifts. It literally might kill me.
And now I worry about the animals, stuck out there. Their houses protect from rain and cold, but not smoke!

In 2016 I took a camping trip to the Croatan Natl. Forest in NC where they were still giving out this beautiful pamphlet from 1985 and I can’t thank them enough

There is so much paranature around here, but people don’t like to talk about it. If they talk about it at all, they put it down to lightning or shadows, and only during the disasters. If it happens now, nobody notices or nobody wants to talk about it.
The important thing is Humans remember the weirdness. Erik says the ferrymen were literally swamped or otherwise too busy to erase Humans’ memories and most of them have not begun to deal with the memories or will not for some reason.
And now there are first-hand accounts by people who also aren’t UFO enthusiasts! I have nothing against UFO enthusiasts, but people tend to doubt them, especially when magic is added to the mix, and maybe the general public won’t immediately dismiss your South Carolinan adults aged 27-65 from a variety of socio-economic classes.
(Variety is a little unadventurous because there are some neighborhoods I am just not going into by myself. Mark does not want to, either, but we are going together.)

1) DuPont State Forest with its blue ghost fireflies, (which I went to when I was too young to really remember and desperately need to go back to)
2) Croatan National Forest

4) Cryptozoology & Paranormal Museum in Littleton
5) All of Route 1 through Warren County

We didn’t get a photo of everyone we got to say hi to today at @croatanbuckfifty but there sure were a bunch of you. Some friends, some team mates, and a whole lot of people riding our bikes; more than we’ve ever seen in one place. People ask a lot where the most of our bikes are and it isn’t Colorado, it’s all over the place outside of Colorado. Today Croatan National Forest seemed like the most Rodeo place on the planet. Thank you! 🙏🏼 #rideexplorecreate (at Cedar Point, North Carolina) https://www.instagram.com/rodeolabs/p/BvF61FklcF6/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=15fy5z4etdgf9

Happy Birthday #uwharrienationalforest!! We 💓 U 🤗 ▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪ Reposted from @uwharriemountainradio ▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪ Happy Birthday to The Uwharrie National Forest! ▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪ The forest derives its name from the Uwharrie Mountains, the ancient mountains atop which most of the forest sits. The western border of the forest is made by the Yadkin River and Great Pee Dee River while the northern border follows the northernmost range of the Uwharries near Asheboro. To the east, the forest is bordered by the Montgomery County seat of Troy. The Forest lies within the Southeastern mixed forests ecoregion and supports mixed forests of pine and oak. Land was first purchased by the Federal government in 1931, and the area was known as the Uwharrie Reservation. The Uwharrie Forest was given federal designation in the early 1960s by President John F. Kennedy, along with the Nantahala, Pisgah, and Croatan National Forests. ~ @wikipedia ▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪ Subscribe to the #RootOneSixGrind #Podcast.  Link in our profile 👈😁 ▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪ #JeepMafia #OffRoad #Fishing #Shooting #Hunting #Outdoors #Conservation #RecruitRetainReactivate #R3 #Overlanding #Navigation #Inspiration #Liberty #Hunter https://www.instagram.com/p/CJ9dLLkDkgk/?igshid=1qj5sy7qn336f

On Sunday, Mark and I went to a church that was pretty good and we had already gone once. We like to go to church, but the problem is telling people what we do. So far, the best way to tell people is that we research folklore and see if it has any basis in reality—we have to say folklore, not the paranormal or supernatural. Cryptozoology sometimes comes up, but not often, which is good, because I think we could do the crypto- and not the -zoology.
Anyway, the pastor and his family came over for supper. They think we are wrong, but they are nice about it, and he preaches good sermons. We are still excommunicated (mostly me because Mark is Latvian Orthodox and automatically excommunicated from Lutheran churches, but he settles for anything) and nobody has to know why unless we tell them, which is very helpful.
We didn’t talk a lot about what Mark and I do. Everything was normal, getting to know you things, and so if it came up naturally, it came up.
To not scare them, we had food that looks American—mashed potatoes, peas and carrots, white bread, pork loin, brown gravy, and blueberry pie and whipped cream, all of which shows up in Roanoke. I still cooked outside, but we kept the culture shock to a minimum.
They also asked why we are not married, and that is because first we were, then we were here and underage, then Mark could have been in trouble because it would have looked like a green card marriage, and we have been planning for a long time, but now can “officially” plan. We left out the part about being married before in Roanoke. The wedding will be in June. Expect sporadic posting until after the wedding.

Yes, it’s been a while. I unintentionally disappeared from my own IG account for a while. Life can get complicated. And loss can leave you rootless and ungrounded and feeling tossed around by hurricane winds. For me, nature is the remedy for that. So I’m going to tell you about this cute little spider and where she lives. A little over a month ago I found myself in North Carolina, near Croatan National Forest, and got to explore an area where carnivorous plants grow. Yellow pitcher plants, purple pitcher plants, and sundews all grow in this particular area. While I had gone out there to photograph the plants, it was a resident of one of the yellow pitcher plants who ended up enchanting me. Spiders will build their webs in the mouths of pitcher plants. I’m sure that the arrangement works out both for the spider and the plant, both of which feed on insects. This lovely little spider was up and about this particular morning, first here at on the top of the plant (the pitcher lid if you will) and then she was lurking on the underside of the lid, which made for a lot of contorted posturing in order to photograph her, and then she was running up and down the outside of the body of the pitcher plant. You could see her shadow through the sunlit walls of the plant. A few feet away a single fire ant was dragging half a butterfly many, many times bigger than itself down the path. And dragonflies zoomed above it all hunting. . . . #mywildlife #spiders #northcorolina (at North Carolina) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0LfTqYgDbc/?igshid=iada19rz9pcr
