Unpopular opinion probably but I would bet that pre-M9 Essek had killed less people than pre-M9 Reani.

Essek was willing to get his hands dirty but I don’t think that extended to killing all the time. He’d definitely had experience, obviously the imprisoned Scourger and how he handled that shows that, but he was a courtier and a scholar first, with flexible morals.

Reani, on the other hand, lived by “the rule is evil dies” until the Nein. The definition of lawful good. Her morals weren’t flexible until the Nein showed her the importance of grey areas. She was a vigilante. Her job was killing people. Just because it was done in the name of good doesn’t mean the bodies go away.

I don’t think either had a particularly high body count (ha) before the Nein, for the record. On the scale of Jester (never) to Caleb and Yasha (evil man’s personal killing machine), I think Essek and Reani both fall solidly in the middle.

There’s not really a point to this, it’s not a “see pre-M9 Essek wasn’t that bad!” post, nor Reani hate. If anything, it’s more a reflection on how the number of people killed isn’t a good litmus test of morality in a D&D world. It’s a normal part of the setting. I love when it’s examined more closely—Jester chopping what’s-his-name’s skull with her handaxe comes to mind—but sometimes you’ve just gotta accept that yes, they kill people. Professionally. And that’s fine. Murder is okay here.

Having listened to the campaign wrap-up, I can't help thinking... Keg/Reani would be a whole lotta fun. Like, we've got one person who is full of light and idealism, who is slowly, carefully beginning to learn that the world is a complicated, difficult place. Then, we've got another person who is a beaten up cynic who may or may not believe she's even capable of doing good. They're located near enough in the world to each other, and are mobile enough that it's not even hard to believe that they could happen to run into each other.

They would essentially grab hold of each other, and start spinning around a central axis of idealism/cynicism, which is a lot of fun.

CR Non-Endgame Ships Poll

Hello and welcome to the project that’s been occupying me all week! A showdown of sorts between 32 Critical Role ships that were not together by the end of their respective campaign! Some notes;

I’ve gone with the phrasing “non-endgame” as some of the relationships featured were together in canon at some point (ex. Blumendrei) or one half/both were canonically attracted to the other/had a crush (ex Widofjord). These are here alongside relationships that are purely fanon (ex. Verinwulf)

Since C3 and present-day EXU are still ongoing, open stories, no ships featuring those characters are included. Anything’s possible. Since EXU: Calamity is a closed story, it gets featured.

All relationships featured here are m/m, f/f, or poly. I have a running list for m/f ships and may do a bracket for them in the future depending on how this one goes. I am not ignoring them.

Each poll will feature art of the characters in question, included with permission from their artists. Links to the original posts will be included and I highly encourage giving them some love if you vote!
