Luscious Libations for the Holidays
Luscious Libations for the Holidays
As the holidays approach, I stock up drinkables, for my own consumption, for serving guests and for gifting. (A bottle of something good makes for an excellent last minute gift.) For the first time, I’m trying Ballotin Chocolate Whiskey’s Caramel Turtle (SRP: $25). It’s a versatile flavored whiskey bringing together rich and creamy caramel and pecan flavors, wrapped in dark chocolate and…

During my first visit to Oregon 8 years ago, the floral aromatics and overall quality of Cristom’s single vineyard 2008 Pinot Noirs made a lasting impression. So I was very excited to spend a beautiful afternoon seeing the vineyards (pics 6-7), touring the barrel room (pics 4-5), and, most importantly, tasting through Cristom’s fine lineup (pic 8)! The highlight of the tasting was the side-by-side tasting of the four 2016 single vineyard Pinot Noirs - Eileen, Jessie, Louise and Marjorie. While Marjorie receives the most acclaim, the Eileen showed the best on Sunday with amazing aromatics that just exploded from the glass! Given my obsession with Syrah and Northern Rhône wines, I also very much enjoyed the 16 Syrah, which is made in a Cote Rotie style with 4.5% Viognier. Thanks very much to @cellarcat (with whom I previously tasted at Cain in Napa way back in 2008!) and @cristomwine for the memorable, first-class experience! ______________________________#vineyards #oregonpinot #willamettevalley #willamettevalleywine #salemoregon #pinotnoir #oregonpinotnoir #pinotnoirlover #vineyardvines #winery #winerytour #winetasting #winetastings #cristomvineyards #redwine #wine #vinho #vin #vino #winetravel #winelover #sommlife #sommelier #wineblogger #wineblog #hublot #hublotbigbang #attorneylife (at Cristom Vineyards) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0QjmQcntDK/?igshid=lhmx3jrecdtn

Most of our Oregon wines we have purchased ourselves during travels through various wine regions in that beautiful state. Today’s wine is n exception - it was a gift. We had not had wine from Cristom Vineyards before. Now we want to visit them in our next trip up to Oregon. . . . . We enjoyed the 2015 Mt Jefferson Cuvée Pinot Noir - a blend of grapes from Cristom’s vineyards as well as other Willamette Valley producers. This wine was impressive. Strong fruit flavors - cherry, cranberry, strawberry, balanced by nice acidity. A medium to full- bodied wine. Nice tannic structure. As Irene likes to say, a Cab lover’s Pinot. . . . . #wine #winetasting #winelover #winenight #wines #wineoclock #wineo #wineglass #winebottle #winestagram #winesofinstagram #instawine #oregon #oregonwine #oregonwinecountry #willamettevalley #willamettevalleypinotnoir #willamettevalleywine #wvwines #orwine #salem #salemoregon #pinotnoir #oregonpinot #cristomvineyards #winelife #wineblog (at Napa, California)

Anne Amie Troon (Southern Oregon Applegate AVA wholly contained in the Rogue Valley AVA and not a single Pinot). Final was a tasting at Walter Scott. Then rushed to the airport to catch my flight back. Needless to say, I've hit a lot of OGs, rockstars, and solid producers. Sadly I just plain ran out of time to see about a dozen more of the well knowns. I got 8 interviews for my show, got a shit ton of drone footage, drank about 30 different local beers, made friends with the locals, made some great connections out here, and a greater understanding of the Willamette Valley. #videowinereviewerlife #lifewithmark #sommlife #wine #oregonwine #willamettevalleywine #podcast #podcastlife https://www.instagram.com/p/B4Q872Mn09n/?igshid=ugof5khrmznu

Willamette Valley Trip Part 2
This is the second part of my Oregon/Washington trip and I’ll write which wineries I stopped at, the stand out wines, and in descending order of how much I enjoyed the winery.
Domaine Drouhin: Absolutely incredible experience! All top notch pinots and chardonnnays. Very French in style with American fruitiness and great staff that were very knowledgeable and enjoyed geeking out over soil and making. I joined their wine club. Cannot recommend enough.
Bergström: arguably the best stop on my journey as far as tasting goes, they had top tier pinots and the best Chardonnay I have ever had on top of food pairings to go with the food and a lovely view. Wines were in the more expensive side but worth it for quality. Bought 4 bottles. Once again, highly recommend.
Domaine Roy: very precise pinots and a great rose. They were extremely terroir focused with pinots being made the exact same way, except from different sites on the vineyards. Bought 2 bottles
Ken Wright: not a single bad wine and the tasting was 5 wines from 4 AVAs to show the different qualities of the vineyards. Their spicy and earthy pinots really shines for me.
Alloro: a beautiful winery with incredible views and a great staff! The wines weren’t incredible but they were consistently good.
Dusky Goose: beautiful winery but the wine didn’t justify the cost of either the wine or the tasting. They do sell aged pinots and put them in their wine tasting lineup which is interesting to see the evolution over time.
Cristom: nothing blew me away and heavy on the fruit fly issue.

Immediately after Monday night’s Krug dinner, we popped numerous great bottles, starting with a comparison tasting of ‘98-99 Leoville Las Cases (pic 4). These wines were both very good and in their drinking window, but the comparison aspect fell a bit flat since they were virtually identical. The ‘95 La Mission Haut Brion and ‘01 Haut Brion were up next. The La Mission was excellent! It was big, dark and brooding with the expected asphalt/gravel notes balancing the dark red fruit. Following a 3-hour decant at my office (pic 2), the Haut Brion was more refined, elegant and polished than the La Mission. Everything was so harmonious, with licorice and spice, balanced by red fruit, abundant acidity, supple tannins and a long, complex finish. Most nights, the Haut Brion would have been the red wine of the night, but Monday we were craving syrah in a big way. So we moved on to a comparison of 1999 Sine Qua Non Syrah “The Marauder” and ‘89 Guigal “La Turque” Cote-Rotie (pic 3). These wines were simply spectacular and my first two contenders for top red wines of 2019! The SQN is 100% syrah, whereas the La Turque includes about 7% viognier. These wines were strikingly similar on the nose - dark fruit, game, pepper, and smoke, but the Guigal had a beguiling floral note as well. Fortunately the taste matched the amazing aromas - both wines attacked the palate with explosive dark fruit balanced by smoked meat, game, and pepper, but the Guigal had some minerality too. For my palate, this Guigal is about as good as red wine can get (and the SQN was not far behind). Before dinner, we also tried the ‘95 La Turque. That wine was amazing as well, but after tasting the ‘89 I think it still has room to improve. Before dinner we also tried the ‘94 Dunn Howell Mountain (served blind I guessed ‘90s Dominus), and a very nice ‘99 Cristom Louise Vineyard. ______________________________#dallasblogger #wine #guigal #laturque #sinequanonwine #syrah #rhone #coterotie #hautbrion #leovillelascases #lamissionhautbrion #winetasting #bordeaux #napacab #napa #tbt #throwbackthursday #redwine #cabernetsauvignon #epicwine #winelover #sommlife #sommelier (at Roots and Water Wine Room) https://www.instagram.com/p/But9WQlHvwC/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=ordx3nx9lrjv

Highlights from the Washington State and Oregon tasting
These were some of the highlights from this week’s Washington State and Oregon tasting. Some really lovely wines from the Pacific Northwest.
Gramercy Cellars Forgotten Hills Syrah 2014 Walla Walla, Washington State, USA From the coolest vineyard in Walla Walla this is a deliciously nuanced Syrah made from grapes harvested in October. It’s fresh, livey and peppery with supple black cherry fruit and some black pepper with a subtle, integrated hint of green. A lovely, vital wine. 94/100
Cristom Louise Vineyard Pinot Noir 2014 Oregon, USA A fifth of this vineyard is on deep sedimentary soils, and this accounts for some of the palate weight. Expressive and quite structured at the same time with rich, spicy raspberry and cherry friuit. Appealing sweet fruit here and some finesse. 93/100
The Hedges crew: Sarah, Boo and Christoph
Hedges Family Estate La Haute Cuvée 2013 Red Mountain, Washington State, USA 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, farmed biodynamically. Supple and textured with very fine blackcurrant and black cherry fruit. Good structure here. Very expressive and balanced with lovely supple black fruits. 94/100
Josh Bergström
Bergström Sigrid Chardonnay 2014 Willamette Valley, Oregon, USA This is lovely: detailed, elegant and mineral with real finesse to the complex, mineral citrus fruits. Nice intensity here on the palate. 95/100
Beckham Estate Amphora Pinot Gris 2015 Oregon, USA This is remarkable. 40 days on skins results in a full pink/red colour. Powerful, appley and lemony with nice texture and a stony, mineral quality under the fruit. Broad but with fresh acidity. So many details here: tea leaves, spice and herbs. So complex. 94/100
Bow & Arrow Air Guitar Red 2015 Oregon, USA This is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Cabernet Franc, and it’s fabulous. Vivid and pure with bright raspberry and blackcurrant fruit. Purity, structure and concentration with a rasping raspberry finish. Beautiful. 94/100
Minimus Muller Thurgau Pet Nat Vitae Springs 2015 Oregon, USA Now for something a little different: a methode ancestrale from Muller Thurgau. It’s highly aromatic with sweet, textured, slightly creamy grape and pear fruit. Smooth, pretty and a but grippy. 92/100
Kelley Fox Wines Montmazi Pinot Noir 2014 Oregon, USA Fresh and fine with juicy cherry and raspberry fruit. Good structure. This is primary and very detailed with nice freshness and purity of fruity. It’s a little fuller than Kelley’s other wines, but still very much on the low extraction, elegant end of the spectrum. 95/100
Ovum Wines Whale Memorista Riesling 2015 Rogue Valley, Oregon, USA From the south of the state, at altitude, from alluvial clay soils. This is fermented for 6 months in concrete eggs. Very lively with lovely citrus (marmalade and tangerine) notes. Shows great concentration with a lingering, lemony finish. Such lovely texture and intensity here. 94/100
Two Vintners Syrah 2014 Washington State, USA This is a strikingly aromatic wine with an open, sweet, meaty olive-laced nose. Very floral and enticing. The palate is sweet, meaty and spicy with ripe berries, olive tapenade and warm herbs. Ripe and seductive, flirting with over-ripeness but getting away with it. 93/100
Cadence Ciel de Cheval Vineyard 2013 Red Mountain, Washington State, USA This Bordeaux-style blend is lively and bright with fresh red berry and black cherry fruit as well as an appealing spiciness. Lovely fruit expression and some subtle herby notes. Ripe but with elegance. 93/100
Domaine Serene Jerusalem Hill Pinot Noir 2013 Oregon, USA I struggle a bit with the size of Domaine Serene’s Chardonnays, but their Pinot Noirs are very fresh and supple. This is rounded and berryish with a sappy edge to the supple red fruits. Has finesse as well as good concentration. 94/100
The Eyrie Vineyards Pinot Noir 2014 Oregon, USA This is such a lovely wine, very much in the understated, elegant Eyrie style. Supple with real finesse to the red cherry fruits, coupled with some savoury, grippy structure. Great balance and drinkability. 94/100
