do you ever wonder if zombies are just Like That because of the mad cow disease

I suppose, the symptoms of personality change, irratic movements, unbalanced movements, loss of intellect and memory, and slurred speech do sound like zombies in fiction - but mad cow disease, BSE (or, Variant CJD - there are four types of creutzfeldt-jakob disease mostly based on how it gets transmitted) also causes immobility and vision problems, which would stop the zombies from being able to actually hunt down humans.

one could definitely argue that CJD zombies that get less and less mobile, eventually dragging themselves along the ground, would be an interesting take (similar to 28 Days Later, for example, where the zombies slowly die off without food). however if it was based in reality they wouldn't be hungering for flesh, they would be more like dementia patients.

i certainly think some zombie media has been heavily inspired by CJD - especially in countries where there has been a major CJD scandal or outbreak (like in the UK)

Emergence of a New Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease: 26 Cases of the Human Version of Mad-Cow Disease, Days After a COVID-19 Injection

Abstract

Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, the formerly rare but universally fatal prion disease in humans, normally progresses over several decades before it leads to death. In the Appendix to this paper, we highlight the presence of a prion region in the spike protein of the original SARS-CoV-2, and in all the “vaccine” variants built from the Wuhan virus. The prion region in the spike of SARS-CoV-2 has a density of mutations eight times greater than that of the rest of the spike, and, yet, strangely that entire prion region disappears completely in the Omicron variant. In the main body of our text, we present 26 cases of Creuzfeldt-Jacob Disease, all diagnosed in 2021 with the first symptoms appearing within an average of 11.38 days after a Pfizer, Moderna, or AstraZeneca COVID-19 injection. Because the causal progression, the etiopathogenesis, of these atypical and new cases of human prion disease — cases of what is apparently a totally new form of rapidly developing Creuzfeldt-Jacob Disease — we focus on the chronology of the symptomatic development. We consider it from an anamnestic point of view — one in which we compare the typical development of pre-COVID cases of Creuzfeldt-Jacob Disease to the extremely accelerated development of similar symptoms in the 26 cases under examination. By such an approach, we hope to work out the etiopathogenesis critical to understanding this new and much more rapidly developing human prion disease. By recalling the sequential pathway of that the formerly subacute and slowly developing disease followed in the past, and by comparing it with this new, extremely acute, rapidly developing prion disease — one following closely after one or more of the COVID-19 injections — we believe it is correct to infer that the injections caused the disease in these 26 cases. If so, they have probably also caused a many other cases that have gone undiagnosed because of their rapid progression to death. By late 2021, 20 had died within 4.76 months of the offending injection. Of those, 8 died suddenly within 2.5 months confirming the rapid progression of this accelerated form of Creuzfeldt-Jacob Disease. By June 2022, 5 more patients had died, and at the time of this current writing, only 1 remains still alive.

Lately I have been fascinated by cannibalism. I have particularly been wondering if one person could survive on an entirely cannibalistic diet, and I found this chart made by James Cole.

Now, humans need rougly 2000-2500 calories per day. So one person could feed a decent number of other people. But it's not practical as a survival strategy, and was thus primarily a ceremonial thing, which was what Dr. Cole was researching (if cannibalism could have been a survival strategy).

Clearly, the human body has more than enough calories to meet our daily requirement. But could one singular person actually get enough other nutrients to live off entirely people? Yes. I did not find a chart for this, but human flesh and organs have enough vitamins and minerals that one shouldn't need to worry about it. And humans can survive just fine on a fully carnivorous diet. And, ignoring laws and morality, killing other people is not particularly difficult (especially if one has a gun or other weapon).

The real issue would be diseases such as Kuru or CJD. Both are prion diseases (caused by a type of protein molecule that got folded wrong, and it can make other proteins that also fold wrong. Prion diseases are when you have enough misfolded prions that it starts destroying your brain) and are always fatal.

Kuru is usually from eating the brain or contact with Kuru-infected wounds, though there is a chance eating any body part MIGHT give somebody Kuru. All the sources I found referred to the brain and no other organs. To my knowledge, one can get CJD from eating infected tissue, however resources on cannibalism are very hard to come by. Kuru is NOT the same thing as CJD, though they are very similar.

CJD is incredibly rare, infecting only one or two people per million each year. I can't find exact numbers, but the amount of Kuru cases are similar to CJD and get rarer as time goes on.

TLDR;

-Human bodies on average have enough calories, vitamins, and minerals for somebody to survive in pretty decent health for a normal amount of time.

-While you can get prion diseases from cannibalism, it is very rare. Don't eat brains.

-Cannibalism or the methods of obtaining human flesh is illegal in all places, so I am not telling you to eat people.

There’s a renewed call for a public inquiry into why so many New Brunswickers have come down with neurodegenerative symptoms and illnesses.

When an initial cluster of over 40 people presented with similar symptoms – muscle spasms, atrophy and progressive dementia – it was thought to be Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, until they tested negative.

That’s when a Moncton-based neurologist thought they could be experiencing an unknown brain disease. The cluster was initially focused in the Moncton and Acadian Peninsula areas of the province.

But after over a year of confusing back-and-forth for patients and their families, the province of New Brunswick halted further investigation by its federal counterparts, saying there was an explanation for each patients’ illness.

This week, New York Times Magazine released an article that calls that into question, citing that neurologist Dr. Alier Marrero believes the number of people seeking help with similar symptoms is now over 400.

It has sparked Green Party MLA Megan Mitton to call for a public inquiry into what happened internally between the province and Ottawa, as well as further testing, including environmental, to try and find patients some answers.

A leading federal scientist claimed he wasn't allowed to keep investigating a mystery neurological illness that made dozens of people sick in New Brunswick, according to an email obtained by CBC News. Dr. Michael Coulthart, who is the head of the Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease Surveillance System, wrote last October that he had been "essentially cut off" from working on the file at the public health level for reasons he could "only discern to be political." He said he was worried there are more than 200 people experiencing unexplained neurological decline. "All I will say is that my scientific opinion is that there is something real going on in [New Brunswick] that absolutely cannot be explained by the bias or personal agenda of an individual neurologist," microbiologist Coulthart wrote last October. "A few cases might be best explained by the latter, but there are just too many [now over 200]."

Sonic Hedgehog

this is probably one of the most famous examples of a protein with a pop culture name. it was first discovered in fruit flies, but also exists in humans and is important in embryonic development. because of its relevance to serious health conditions, the name has been highly criticized

ATP Synthase

we all know that the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell, but that doesn't fully take into account how cool it is! ATP is the 'energy currency' of the cell, and is synthesized using a proton gradient and this awesome motor of a protein. the best way to understand it is by watching animations like this video.

this is a chaperone in the endoplasmic reticulum, which basically means it binds to proteins as they are synthesized and translocated into the ER lumen, allowing them to slowly fold into the correct shape. chaperones in general are really neat, but this one has the bonus of sounding cool, and gets bonus points for being inside the endomembrane system instead of just out in the cytosol.

this fluorescent protein was originally found in jellyfish, but exists in other animals as well, and gives off green fluorescence when exposed to UV light. it is commonly used in research to tag and visualize things, and E. coli cells expressing GFP are visibly green when grown on a plate (I've worked with them and they look very cool!) this protein has a beta barrel, and the parts around it have been modified to create new versions with different colours

Prion protein

the prion protein is naturally expressed, but its function is unknown. however, it is best known due to prion disease, which is caused by misfolded versions of the protein that spread destruction like an infectious agent as they cause nearby healthy proteins to become misfolded. this causes conditions including chronic wasting disease in deer, mad cow disease in cattle and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans. prions constantly change their structure unless they are bound to something else, which forms a very stable structure. this then continues to bind other proteins, eventually forming an aggregate that damages tissue.
