Responding to this post as a separate post because I want to respond to something that I think is beyond the scope/intention of the original post (and honestly the scope/intention of the response in the linked post) but that, like.

I want to respond to it because it's been churning in my head.

Specifically the idea of the Protestant Work Ethic and trying to earn your way into heaven.

Because that's the very antithesis of what the Gospel is.

Over and over, it is made very clear that you cannot earn your way into heaven. (Titus 3:5 and Ephesians 2:8-9 are the ones that come immediately to mind, but there are more than that. (I also like - Romans 4 and the entire discussion about it being faith and not works and especially Romans 4:4-8.)) Literally one of the entire points is that you are stuck in your sin and you cannot get out and no matter what you do, you cannot earn your way in, but God loves you and chose you and wants you, so He paid your debt Himself (Jesus) and is giving you His righteousness - His perfection - because He was the only one who could earn His way in.

God is for you, not against you.

Are there things you should be doing? Yes. (Ephesians 2:10 talks about that, too.) But, like. It's not to earn your way in. It's out of love and gratefulness to the One who got you out of your horrible predicament? And then on top of that, made you a co-heir with Him?

Because it's...He paid for you to get in and then also you got adopted as a child of God? And someone described it once as good works after that being like when a child makes a drawing for their dad and their dad hangs it on the fridge? It's not to earn anything; it's because you love Him, too?

So, like - I want to know where the Protestant Work Ethic went wrong. Why so many people think it's about earning their way when it isn't that at all.

It's a gift. It was always a gift.

"Alright kid, picture this," BJ starts.

They're on a long ride through the desert, with only the scraggly weeds and their horses and each other for company, and the sun is high overhead. Every few minutes, Lydia takes her bolero off and uses it to fan her sweaty face. At least having her hair shorn this short is a bit of a relief from the usual hot, sticky feeling of hair on the back of her neck. BJ is riding along side her, clearly not bothered by the temperature. She wishes, briefly, she could be dead too, just so she wouldn't have to endure the sun anymore, but just because he can't feel the heat doesn't mean his rotten meat isn't reacting slightly to it. She pulls Emily's reigns, widens the gap between herself and the smell of a dead man, and replaces her hat on her head as she listens. "So I'm runnin' with this posse, right?" he starts, gloved hands gripping Sandy's reigns. "Real wild group. Ten or so men, all of em just as likely to cut yer throat in th' night as they are to buy you a drink th' night before. Never know what's gonna happen with em."

"Why do outlaws and New York socialites have so much in common?" she muses, as their horses plod along. "Them high society types are way worse," BJ snorts. "They won't even do th' throat slittin' themselves. They just hire men of our ilk to do it for em." Our ilk. That makes her smile.

"S'besides th' point, though. Don't distract me, kid, or I won't-" "Remember which part is true and which is a lie?" she taunts. He fakes offense. "Storytellin' is an important part of an outlaw's life," he says. "Bullshittin' an' comin' up with stories is how you flex yer mental muscles, which are like to atrophy on long trudges through th' desert, such as th' one we find ourselves on." "Well aren't you unusually verbose?" He apparently doesn't know that word, and doesn't know if he should be insulted or not. "So you're with this posse?" Lydia prompts. "Oh. Right! An' we ride up through th' mountains an' th' woods into Chico. There's all these logger barons there," he explains. "Big opulent palaces of wealth, an' th' boys, they figure with th' ten of us, we should be able to bust in an' rob th' joint, no issue." "There were eleven men," Lydia corrects. "Counting you." His squints, seems to be mentally counting as she laughs softly at him. "Eleven, right. Well however many there was, we was armed to th' teeth. Real deadly. We wait until nightfall, an' then three of us kicked in th' front door, an' three kicked in th' back, an' then we all stormed th' place, roused that rich asshole from his bed an' stuck a pistol barrel in his mouth."

He's not a bad storyteller, when he gets going. She can picture it clearly, and maybe she's drawing on her own experiences. The shape of the baron's house. The garden out front, once tended with love by a woman who treated everything in her life the way she treated that garden, and who was robbed from Lydia's life too soon. The way the opulent wallpaper shimmers slightly in the moonlight, threads of silver interwoven into it. The marble floors and the meticulously polished pounded tin ceiling panels, kept sparkling by hired help. The expensive imported silk sheets on top of a feather bed, newly installed electric lights casting a steady glow, a far cry from the flicker of oil lamps she's grown used to. "Did you hurt him?" she asks softly, picturing Charles against her will, a barrel in his mouth. Her gun. Her glaring down at him, hand on the trigger. "Nah," Beetlejuice says easily, and that whole scene melts away. They're back in the desert. Her eyes are damp. He doesn't notice as she wipes them with her sleeve. "Robbed him blind, though. An' found his armory, an' got myself acquainted with my pearl handled pistol." He sighs, fondly. Lydia rides in silence for a long moment. "You said you paid for that pistol," she points out, after a moment. "Sure I did," Beej grins at her. "So here's th' story of how one of them cowards robbed me, an' how I had to buy my gun back, an' get my revenge, all in one night-"

And he starts on another winding tail as the continue their trek across the sands.

Long and Short of it is I've always hated how Vylad was there in Mystreet S1, PDH S1 and then he just... dropped off the face of the earth after that. It always irked me a bit when it would show Garroth and Zane having brotherly bonding moments (and trauma) and always having the thought of (Man wasn't there a third brother in all this?) there in the back of my mind.

I'm now going to do some little bullet points of my Vylads role in S2-6 but this is a great time to mention I've never seen past S4 so I'm running on Wiki Lore and the gospel of AO3 and @catzgam3rz; who collaborates (Read: Infodump and Ramble) on a hypothetical rewrite with me so it gets vague and murky for the later seasons.

S1:

Basically the same as canon (as in S1 is kinda just slice of life) but instead of Vylad just travelling around the world he is an off the grid hunter that wanders the wilderness all the time (The freak)

This is based on my very fuzzy memories of MCD Vylad always kinda just being in trees as he watched Lady Aphmau in the early seasons so I just put Mystreet Vylad in trees for fun this time

Has a vaguely similar relationship to his brothers as in MCD. in the sense it's better with Garroth and more strained with Zane

S2:

Goes to LLP with the rest of the main cast (which consists of the 11 big designs I made) because season 2 is not when you should be writing out characters Jessica

He wears little rainboots and unlike Laurance (Who FYI wears cowboy boots a majority of the time) the rest of the cast did not get him into flip flops before he went trudging into the ocean (again a freak)

I like to imagine that if any drama is going on in the story you could always see him floating around on an inner tube off in the distance

S3:

Again back to slice of life so he does a lot of shenanigans with the cast here

This is the season where the shadow knights feature but for the life of me, I cannot remember if Vylad was officially a part of them or not (And his Wikia is not even a paragraph~) But if it turns out he was there'll probably be more shenanigans around that.

He ends up leaving mid-season (Fall ish?) to go on a hunting expedition

S4:

Oh hey look Vylad is back because we don't believe in writing characters off with little rhyme or reason Jessica

Vylads hunting expedition ends up being in the same area as the lodge. and we all know nothing bad happens there!

there's now a little ski village downhill from the lodge which is where Vylad is staying at seasons start. He's good friends with a lot of the people there.

He's a werewolf now... Don't worry about it!

Oh, what's this? Is that relationship building between him and Zane on the horizon? Well, that won't hurt at all, will it?

AY:

A not-alone buddy comforts his not-alone buddy (I do not know much about Aphmau's Year but know it's short so that's all I got)

S5:

As he is a part of the Lodge crew he gets to go to Starlight!

Possibly is involved in a certain shenanigan with his brothers I'll be posting a comic about that in a few days

Get's lost constantly. Figures Starlight being an island means he can't really get lost since he'll hit ocean eventually and refuses to acknowledge how big said island is.

Doesn't float around like in S2 but you can still find him wading on the shore in his boots

being a hyperattentive freak, he get's some bad vibes from the island sooner than most

S6

Gonna be honest, me and Catz have not watched all of When angels fall but are planning to soon so I'll just leave you with the fun fact that all of my season 6 designs are supposed echo my MCD's designs for the characters (Since S6 is when it was decided hey maybe Diaries is really important here now)

TLDR: Vylad was shafted in Mystreet so I'm fix it

Everyone who says " Beyonce's album wasn't even country! " needs to watch this rn and you have been preaching the gospel since she finally got what the industry of white bigots have denied her since the album released.

Beyonce is country. In fact, if you like country, you have black people to thank for it existing ( I could rant forever about this but basics is a lot of the instruments that make country music country music were either invented by enslaved black people or were most notably used by enslaved black people, which I find it funny in a sad way that white people are still taking our shit and pretending it was all them )

CLOCK IT ANON!!! country is a historically black genre that’s been co-opted by white artists. this album is a love letter to BLACK southern culture, music and way of life in the same sense that renaissance was a love letter to the BLACK queer and trans community, to house music and ballroom culture, to her uncle johnny who inspired her as a child. in the same exact sense that lemonade was her personal experience as being a BLACK woman, of her husband’s infidelity, her journey from betrayal to heartbreak to forgiveness, of all the emotional baggage black women are expected to hold (just for people to say she wasn’t being vulnerable at all or shaming her for staying with jay). beyonce should have won album of the year from self titled all the way to cowboy carter, and it’s not even close. time and time again white people disrespect black artistry and people but be the first ones using AAVE to call you a fucking slur lmao.

as for billie, i already said the album was cute, but it did NOT deserve AOTY. the fact that people think they can disrespect beyonce and CC despite admitting to not even listening to it tells me everything I need to know. cc was filled with rich cultural references, black history, discussions of the black experience and her experience with being disrespected and excluded by the cmas. the first SONG literally has giselle saying “they used to say I spoke too country and then the rejection came and said I wasn’t country enough. said I wouldn’t saddle up. if this ain’t country, tell me what is?”!!!! ???? ameriican requiem alone smashed all of her competition out of the water. competition that have been repackaging the same sounds, same concepts and production from before. that’s also why they’re trying to gag the hive by bringing up how many writers cc has as if that very organic collaboration isn’t why her albums are always so fresh and innovative and good.
