With the increasing number of cases as the 2nd wave of coronavirus disease is upon the nation, the healthcare system of India is on the brink of breakdown. Over the past few weeks, hospitals have had more queues than restaurants. While government officials and health practitioners are doing the best they can, the overflowing cases of infections has led to a lack of hospital beds, scarcity in medication and even availability of doctors to consult – resulting in panic and agony among the citizens. To eradicate this fear among the public, online and remote consultations are being brought to effect. Online consultations are a great way to reduce face-to-face contact with suspected or already infected patients as far as possible to minimize the rise of transmitting the infection. The risk of clients or nursing staff getting infecting and further spreading it can also be abolished by implementing online consultation for COVID. However, online consultation has its own pros and cons. It requires several conditions to be fulfilled and just like most things, it too has it advantages and cannot work in the case of certain limitations. Here are the top 10 things that nobody told you about online consultation of coronavirus: 1. Online consultation can be considered if the patient wants straightforward assessment, check-up after COVID test or only a mere follow-up. Online consultation can prove to be really effective and convenient in such cases.

2. The patient’s medical records must be easily accessible to the medical practitioner or health professional. If the medical records of his COVID tests are not properly accessible to the doctor, he might not be able to give a full-fledged report or further guidance to his patient online.

3. This particular point goes without saying, but the doctor who is giving out online consultations, should be qualified enough to give necessary prescribed medication required for curbing the virus or arrange follow-up for prescription if deemed necessary. Online consultants can also turn out to be frauds, making the patients pay up money while not providing any relevant information. Hence, it is absolutely imperative that a background check of the patient’s online consultant must be done prior.

4. The patient should also be well-adept and aware of the entire process of online consultations and how every step is taken during every online session, if there are multiple sessions, depending on what the doctor advises.

5. Online consultations will not prove effective if the patient has an extremely low oxygen level, severe symptoms like cough, high fever, no smell or reduced interest in food intake. In short, if the patient has severe complexities, online consultations are not the ultimatum. The patient must immediately be taken to the nearby hospital where his treatment procedure shall begin under the guidance of doctors face-to-face.

6. If the patient has done RAT test to determine if he is positive but has so symptoms, if he has undergone any medical procedure related to COVID – unless every single of his reports, test results from labs and prescriptions are made available to the online consultant, his recovery will not be fully effective.

7. The patient or someone present with him in an online session must have the capabilities or capacity to be able to understand what the consultant is saying or how is he guiding the patient.

8. If the patient’s symptoms demand him to be physically examined, online doctor consultation will nor prove to be very beneficial. In that case, if the consultant agrees, he can come and examine the patient at home, or the patient has to be taken to the nearest medical healthcare institute so that he can be physically examined and further information can be provided on his recovery.

9. Prescribing medicines can be done via online consultations, but when it comes to injecting the patient or providing him with oxygen cylinders – online consultation proves to be ineffective. For example, in terms of vaccination, the patient must be present at the vaccination centres to get vaccinated. Similarly, if the virus has heavily affected the lungs and the patient finds it impossible to breathe due to low oxygen in his body, he will have to take oxygen cylinder support in order to breathe with no difficulty. In that case, the only option available to the patient is being registered or admitted to the nearest hospital which have empty beds.

10. If the patient has already infected his family members or the other people who have met him before testing positive, online covid consultations will not be efficacious. In such a large scale, every suspected person who had come in contact with patient Zero in this circle must be individually tested to check if anyone of the people test positive. Keeping in mind all the mentioned points, online consultations are effective, up to a certain length. If the patient is not serious or does not require immediate medical attention, unnecessary queues at hospitals can be avoided if a certain percentage of these patients take the help of online consultations.

Behavior Change in COVID 2019

#behavioralchange I bought fresh fruits from a vendor nearby. He handed me the fruits and then wiped his hands with a sanitizer kept near his cash box. I was amazed and I told him so. A kilometer away, there is a popular wine shop. Over 24 people were standing close to each other with their masks pulled down. The lure of alcohol on a Saturday evening made them forget the dangers of the virus. These are 2 contrasting behaviors that need to be understood by us. 1) We don’t need lockdowns. 2) We need behavior change. How long can you lock down a nation? The reason why #Europe is back on its feet is because of behavioral change voluntarily implemented by its citizens. The reason why #USA suffers is that conservative Americans refuse to change their behavior. Same with #Brazil. And same with #India. Which is perhaps why Viktor Frankl said, “Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our #growth and our #freedom.” Survival is not compulsory. It is our choice.
