I would like to give the jester a little kiss on their hat

The jester freezes - but not in fear.

They tilt their head slowly, the bells giving a puzzled chime, as if asking: Was that for me? Or for the idea of me?

Then, very gently, they raise one hand to touch the spot where the kiss landed. A tiny pat. A silly, precise little gesture, like confirming the moment had really happened.

They do a slow, deliberate spin - just once - and stop with perfect poise, looking up at the stranger.

They bow.

Not mockingly. Not theatrically.

Softly. Sincerely.

A jingle like a blush.

They don't speak. But they let their bells ring just a little longer than usual. As if replying in their own language.

Then they skip off as if nothing had happened.

But the hat stays just a little crooked, and they don't fix it.

Dunno if this will amuse anyone other than myself but Jester is sanctioned to ogle knights by the king. It’s very important work and someone must do it. 😌

ok so basically 👏

Royalty au where everything is the same but phoenix has been trying to figure himself out bc he's with a traveling minstrel show with acting and puppets etc. never rlly knows his real fam

the travelers are sent to perform for king gregory edgeworth and his family, as well as the von karmas and the feys while they talk about diplomatic procedures in the kingdom of japanifornia. (idk wip name for the kingdom i hate this game /j)

i think Larry is a peasant or like a runaway from a rich noble who stole some [object] (not on purpose) from the king by joining phoenix's band bc phoenix was like "ur so funny bro u shud join us!"

but unfortuneately phoenix gets accused of stealing bc larry happened to steal [insert smth here] of miles edgeworth the prince. the band abandons phoenix to get beheaded/punished (idk i might just make it public humiliation bc it would be funny if he just had to apologize but idk its medieval he could be getting his hand cut off for stealing or smth) except larry who stays behind to try and help his bro.

but before everyone can suggest a punishment, miles (and eventually larry) defends phoenix. and the rest is history.

phoenix and larry then decide to live in the castle bc gregory was like "that was so sweet aww u guys can stay here"

so yay yippee friendship hooray!

but then gregory edgeworth is assassinated and no one knows how it happened. Miles belives its his fault (i'll figure out why later) larry and phoenix are kicked out of the castle and the feys take them in.

phoenix and larry live in kurain for a bit and have fun but feen misses miles and so does larry but he's not as insane lol

then phoenix gets into trouble with a witch (Dahlia) and Mia Fey, a runaway princess of kurain turned fighter/knight/Rebellion leader, rescues him! YAY MIA! (Godot is her right hand man, Lana is the royal guard so forbidden love on every end yay)

so being inspired; he decides to become a knight to the von karmas to get into the castle and see miles and save him from whatever fate has befallen him and the kingdom bc the kingdom is slowly going to shit since Greg’s death.

BUT THEN! When he becomes a Knight, he learns that Edgeworth and The Von Karmas are complete ASSHOLES.

No matter what Phoenix does, nothing gets through to Miles and Mia is like “We told u so, bro :/“

So! Upon finding out that von karma/miles edgeworth are tyrants, phoenix doesn't feel right serving the kingdom in that way, especially after mia is murdered as well and the new princess, Maya is to be executed for her murder.

so phoenix drops being a knight and he becomes the only person who can possibly stand up to king miles:

Phoenix becomes the COURT JESTER!

Court Jesters weren’t just there to make people/the king laugh, they also had an obligation to the people and to the king to point out any flaws within the way they rule the kingdom. They were basically tasked with critiquing / criticizing the way the rulers of the kingdom rule the kingdom through the guise of humor.

And also like. C’mon. The pun is RIGHT THERE. /COURT/ JESTER. also it’s just fun to make fun of phoenix wright

My favourite tomb in the Cathedral of Barcelona (Catalonia). This is Antoni Tallander —known at the time as Mossèn Borra, Lord Borra—, who was master of jesters.

His is the only tombstone in the Cathedral that's not made of stone. It's made of bronze, and has the Latin inscription "Hic jacet Dominus Borra miles gloriosus. Facta fuit sepultura ista anno domini MCCCCXXXIII", which means "Here lies Lord Borra, glorious soldier. This tombstone was made in the year of Our Lord 1433." He was not a soldier, even less a glorious one; the term "glorious soldier" is a joke and a reference to the comedy play of the same name by the Roman playwriter Plautus.

He served as jester in the courts of two kings of Catalonia-Aragon: Martin the Humane's (Martí l'Humà) in Sicily and Alphonse the Magnanimous' (Alfons el Magnànim) in Naples. King Martin held him in such high esteem that he entrusted him with diplomatic missions, which led him to take part in the Council of Constance and follow the Holy Roman Emperor Segismund, reporting back to the king via letters. According to the legend, the last thing king Martin did before dying was laughing at a joke Borra made.

The wizard turned his gaze to the king.

The man was ordinary enough for royalty - sharp-minded, wine-sweet, too young to be wise but too old to be careless. His court glimmered with power, but his eyes often wandered.

And when they did -

The jester appeared.

Not summoned. Not called.

Just… there.

The wizard watched from a balcony during an afternoon audience. The jester stood two paces behind the throne, balancing an orange on one elbow. The moment tension tightened the king’s jaw, the jester let it roll down their arm and caught it with their chin.

A smirk. A flicker of laughter.

The king relaxed.

Later, at supper, a noble droned on about tariffs. The jester, half-hidden behind a curtain, slowly tipped forward until only the crown of their hat poked out.

One bell chimed.

The king’s eyes lit up.

At night, the wizard watched from the gallery above the firelit parlor. The king lounged in a silk robe, reading poetry aloud to no one. The jester lay on the carpet, chin in hands, legs kicked up, perfectly still except for the bells on their toes, which twitched at the rhymes.

The king reached down absently, patting the jester’s hat.

"My darling little thing," he murmured.

The jester leaned into the touch, a soft jingle in reply.

Not once did they speak.

But always - they were near.

What if I write a story about a socially anxious king who doesn't trust his own abilities as a leader cus he was so young when he got put on the throne and his silly jester boyfriend/childhood bestie who encourages him. Also his first Knight is a father figure to him. What then.
