Secrecy & Deception Chapter 13
Two Chinas (Wattpad | Ao3)
Table of Contents | Prev | Next
Bold is Russian. And for a chapter called "Two Chinas" I yap a lot about East Germany.
Event: Mao Zedong declares the creation of the People’s Republic of China
Location: Tiananmen Square, Beijing, Liberated Zone, Republic of China (de jure)
Date: October 1, 1949
Liberated Zone was excited. After twelve long years, she would finally become a country again. As grateful as she was for her survival as the Anti-Japanese Base Areas, then as the Liberated Zone, she was ready to retake her place as the countryhuman of China.
She had felt weaker as the Liberated Zone, and she was shorter, not yet the sum of all her people. This day would change that, and Liberated Zone could become China again.
Looking around Tiananmen Square, Liberated Zone once again marveled at how beautiful her new capital was. She knew it would be an excellent place for her people to grow and for her country to take shape and take its place as equals alongside the other main combatants of the recent war. Once the China from before is taken care of, things will be perfect, and Liberated Zone can have a break from all the fighting and enjoy peace and prosperity.
“China, are you ready?” a soldier asked, approaching her. Liberated Zone smiled.
“It is still the Liberated Zone. I am not China yet,” she corrected lightly before striding over to Mao Zedong as she took her place for the ceremony and the proclamation.
It was time to become a country again.
Liberated Zone will be the first to admit she was not paying attention to the ceremony, mind wandering with plans of what she would do with countryhood, and how she would begin the process of healing her country from the scars of war and the actions of the recently dead Japan.
But she would not forget the feeling of becoming a country again. Power surged into her veins, and a solidity came to her form as she grew taller, the power growing her form. She had worn clothes that were too big at her old height so she could grow into her power, and…she had grown into it.
She could feel so many more of her people now. She could feel the divisions from where the China from before’s army was. She could feel the war on her body as her new power seemed to dance inside her, dampening the pain from the war.
China closed her eyes, smiling softly at the feelings. She had missed this, missed being a country.
She still remembered the day she had lost her countryhood, remembered the fear she felt, thinking she was about to die, and the apologies to those who did not believe she was going to live. But her people, her people, so beautiful and amazing, who loved her so, did not want her to pass on. They kept her alive.
The loss of her first country made her ill, and she never quite recovered from that weakness. But her people had kept her alive, weak as she was. China was given the chance to live. Her people allowed her to become China again, to become their country again.
She could never thank them enough for that.
China opened her eyes again to see the raising of her new flag, the same colors as her old one, but with the hammer and sickle in the middle disappearing and with four new, smaller stars in the upper left corner.
She felt the changes to the flag take place, the power from the change dancing through her power with the power of being a country.
It was so wonderful.
China looked down at her hands, seeing little yellow stars appear on her knuckles, four stars to match the ones on her flag, and a large yellow star appeared on the back of her hands, a smaller imitation of her flag on her hands.
China heard the 21-gun salute go off before her new national anthem began. She almost started crying out of sheer joy. Looking back up at the square, she saw the start of her army's first military parade.
She couldn’t stop the smile that spread across her face.
This truly was a wonderful day.

Event: Creation of East Germany
Location: East Berlin, Soviet Occupation Zone
Date: October 7, 1949
Saxony was so happy. Today was the end of her time as a countryless state and the return of a countryhuman to the rest of German land. While Saxony was not happy about the existence of West Germany and the fact that Germany was divided into two, they could have a Germany now.
The land wasn’t empty anymore.
It was wonderful.
And more importantly for Saxony, this Germany was her child. She knew it as soon as the Germany was born when she felt the land celebrate and the bond appear. She knew she had to find her child.
However, that was easier said than done.
Saxony and her fellow states from the Soviet Occupation Zone, Brandenburg, Thuringia, Saxony-Anhalt, and Mecklen-Vorpommern, were not allowed to see the new Germany yet. Apparently, Saxony, Brandenburg, and Thuringia were still Nazis and not allowed to see the new Germany yet, in fear they may “corrupt her with militaristic ideals” as if Saxony was not tired of war too.
“Are you sure you can’t convince your father to let us see her?” Saxony asked Mecklen-Vorpommern, hoping the younger state could offer some sort of assistance, being USSR’s son and therefore having more say than the rest of them with him. He despised the rest of them for having been alive during the time of the Nazis. He had made his discontent known on more than one occasion.
Saxony did her best to push the memory aside. She didn’t want to think about that.
“No, he doesn’t want any of us there. Even though I’m his son, even though Saxony-Anhalt was born after the Nazis…we’re still German, and that’s the same thing to him. I…” Mecklen-Vorpmmern trailed off, shaking his head.
“We just need to be patient. The newest Germany will meet us eventually. We’re their states. We have to meet.” Brandenburg said, voice so infuriatingly calm.
“You’re only okay with this because your child hasn’t been kept from you! If this were Four Powers you weren’t allowed to see, you would be in the same boat as me!” Saxony said, teeth bared and a growl building in her throat. Brandenburg’s wings stretched out more as he attempted to make himself look better, but Thuringia stepped between them before anything else could happen.
“Cut it out! We don’t need this right now,” she said, voice sharp. Saxony backed down, tense. She hated this. She hated waiting to see her kid; she hated having to play nice for USSR and his army and…and…
Saxony just wanted to see her child and for the USSR to leave so she could return to everyday life. She hated having to play nice, to wear a mask, and be whatever the hell USSR wanted her to be because she ran the risk of getting executed for being a Nazi if she didn’t.
She hated it. She just wished things could have been normal, that Weimar, innocent Weimar, wasn’t murdered by that fucking Germany, and they could have lived as normal, could have existed peacefully.
Saxony was tired.
Finally, after what felt like forever, the door opened, and Tver Oblast stepped out.
“You can speak with Germany now,” he said before stepping aside to let them in. Saxony was the first one in, followed closely by Brandenburg. When she stepped into the room, the aching, tugging pull in her chest finally went silent as she laid eyes on the newest Germany—her daughter.
Saxony marched over to pull her daughter into a hug but was stopped by USSR, who grabbed her arm with anger in his eyes. Saxony wasn’t sure how attached he was to the newest Germany. Mecklen-Vorpommern certainly didn’t think highly of his father and believed that USSR saw him more as a tool to get to the other states, but she was certain this was due to his hatred of her.
“I’m just going to greet my child. I’m not going to attack her!” Saxony snapped.
“You can never tell with Nazis,” USSR said.
“Please let my mother go, Father,” Saxony’s daughter said, her voice polite and gentle. USSR released Saxony, and she quickly pulled Germany into a hug.
“It is so good to finally meet you! USSR had us waiting for far too long,” Saxony said before pulling away. She looked her daughter up and down, feeling pride well up inside her. She had a daughter, and she couldn’t be more proud.
“I apologize, but he…Father wanted me to work out some things with my government first before meeting you all. He believes it would have been overwhelming to have met you so soon after birth,” Germany said. Saxony shot a quick glance at Mecklen-Vorpommern as she said that, not liking the frown that appeared on his face. But a sharp glance from his father had the frown fading into an unsteady smile.
“Hello, Germany. I am Mecklen-Vorpommern. I am your half-brother through the USSR. It is nice to meet you,” he said, holding out a hand for Germany to shake. She did so, before pulling him into a hug as well.
“It is nice to meet you,” she said, “And the rest of you?”
Saxony smiled. She knew that Germany knew their names, as she was the country they were all now a part of, but it was nice to see her being polite and asking for their names anyway.
“I am Brandenburg.”
“I’m Thuringia. I do my best to make sure the others play nice, so if they’re ever getting too much for you, I can put them in their place,” Thuringia said with a bright grin.
“So long as you remember you are not allowed to own any weapons,” USSR cut in. Saxony scowled, wishing the man would just go away already.
“I know, I know,” Thuringia said, more relaxed in USSR’s presence now that they were not his occupied land areas anymore.
“And I’m Saxony-Anhalt. I’m…your great-niece, I believe? I am Saxony’s great-granddaughter.” Saxony-Anhalt finished off. Germany smiled.
“It is nice to meet you all! I hope I…I can be a better country for you all.” Brandenburg snorted.
“Can’t be any worse than the last one. He murdered his way into power. You got yours fairly. You’ll be fine,” he said.
“So long as you remember to behave yourself,” USSR said, his German accented and unsteady. Germany nodded.
“I know. I promise I will,” she said, “I will be better. I promise I won’t end up like him.”
Shooting a glance at USSR, Saxony hoped that was true.

Event: Retreat of the government of the Republic of China to Taiwan
Location: Taipei City, Republic of China
Date: December 1, 1949
China’s pride was severely hurt. She hated that she had to retreat to the island of Formosa. It felt shameful to leave most of her land in the hands of Red China. China really should have killed that traitor when she dissolved her first attempt at a country.
At the very least, the retreat to Formosa was not permanent and would just be a temporary base until they could regroup and then take back the rest of her country.
That didn’t mean she enjoyed the shame that came with having to retreat so far.
She just wished—
A bolt of pain cut off the thought, and China’s hand flew to her forehead, rubbing at the spot where the pain had come from. Ever since General Chiang had placed her country under martial law, she had become more susceptible to headaches. Of course, that was probably linked to the stress of her situation.
While her victory would come eventually, they were still not in the best position. But they were alive, and more importantly, she was alive. As long as she was alive, the Red China would never have a legitimate claim to her land, and China could continue her diplomatic relations with other countries.
She was not defeated yet. She was the Republic of China, and she would not be killed by the traitors who created the false China. Project Guoguang would be put into place when the opportunity presented itself, and China would reunite her lands.
It was only a matter of time. The false China knew nothing of being a country. Someday, she would make a blunder big enough to kill her, and when that day came, China would be ready.

🥮Mid-Autumn Fes '24
featuring MACAU!! HONG KONG!! CHINA AND TAIWAN!!
also Cotai and Portugal appearance now eat ur mooncakes comrades and EAT IT eat IT (this is on ao3 also but i wanted to post it here)
I decided not to add china and taiwan to the tags list since this kind of leans to the countryhumans side; and that iirc china in hetalia is a man and taiwan's a female but its reversed here. Nonetheless enjoy THE MOONCAKES and if ur a hetalian pretend this is like a different universe
not beta read!!1 Im so sorry
I yawned as I played my cards with Cotai and then grabbed my wine cup, of which was filled with juice and then chugged it. “ When’s Portugal coming? “ Cotai asked and I just shrugged. “ He probably forgot about me, “ I said and then put down a card.
At the same time the doorbell rang. So I set down my cup as the remaining juice sloshed in it and then got off the ground, and opened the door quickly but not too harshly. Then I blinked at the person in front of me—Portugal.
“ Ah, Macau my amigo! “ Portugal gave me a grin and patted me on the shoulder. I looked at his hand, and then to his face. “ Portugal, “ I just sputtered out.
“ Yeah? “ He looked into the room and I swear Cotai waved at him. “ Tell me if China’s being a terrible mom, I’ll take you back if she does. “
I shook my head and just gave a smile of relief. “ No, no, she isn't. I’m just surprised and happy that you’re here. “ Then I looked back to see Cotai running over and shoving a mooncake into Portugal’s hands.
“ Eat it, “ He said with a grin and then fixed his socks. He’s a messy kid.
“ Alright, alright. Now you kids have fun, happy.. “ Portugal looked around awkwardly. " Mid-Autumn Festival. Right, have fun! “ He said as he waved, and then turned around to run off.
Then I just shook my head and watched him disappear into the streets, and then closed the door. Unfortunately China was in the kitchen earlier and she took some osmanthus wine out from the fridge, walked down to the coffee table me and Cotai sat earlier, and set it down with a few cups. “ Cotai, you don't drink this, okay? “
He just gave a reluctant nod and looked at me before running out of the house. I went to the floor and sat on it, my legs curled up in front of me. “ Hong Kong should be back and Taiwan’s in his room. “
And then Taiwan looked out from his room, to the wine and at China. “ I love that. But not you. “ He stepped out in a changshan and then sat next to her on the couch, as she was wearing a cheongsam.
I sighed and looked around, the three of us waiting for Hong Kong to show up any moment. “ Of course you don't, “ China crossed her arms as she looked down on me.
“ What? “ I looked up at her. “ Aren't we supposed to wait for him to come back— “
“ —And look who’s late. “ Taiwan chuckled as he looked at the door, Hong Kong coming in and ruffling his hair. “ You should be punctual. “
He rolled his eyes and closed the door by kicking it. Not too harsh. “ Yeah, yeah whatever.. “ He took off his shoes and then scrambled over to me, nearly making me fall down. I nudged him on the shoulder and he gave a grin.
“ So sorry, now whatever. “ He looked at the wine bottle and the cups as China filled them slowly. “ We drink? “
“ Yes, “ China said after finishing pouring the fourth and last cup. She took a cup herself as the other three of us did.
“ But are we not drinking our lives away? “ Hong Kong asked and I just chuckled. “ We are but.. it doesn't matter. “
“ Now, “ Taiwan said and then raised his cup. “ Happy Mid-Autumn Festival to all of you. “
And so we clinked our cups, and drank our life away as my brother said, and then admired the moon. It didn't really matter. And ate mooncakes. And I wish all of you readers.. a happy Mid-Autumn Festival.
