Celebrate New Year's Eve in Tokyo: A Blend of Tradition and Modernity
Tumblr media
Tokyo uniquely blends modern vibrance and deep-rooted traditions during New Year's Eve. From visiting temples for the first prayer of the year to enjoying dazzling light shows in Shibuya and Roppongi, the city has something for everyone. The countdown events are a spectacle, with the city's vibrant lights and energetic crowds creating an unforgettable atmosphere.
Traditional New Year's Eve Experiences
Temple Visits for Hatsumode
Book your trip with us.
One of the most cherished traditions in Tokyo during New Year's Eve is Hatsumode, the first visit to a shrine or temple of the year. Locals and tourists flock to famous temples like Senso-ji in Asakusa and Meiji Shrine in Harajuku to pray for good fortune in the coming year. The serene atmosphere and beautiful architecture make these visits memorable.
Omikuji and Ema
While at the temples, don't forget to participate in omikuji (fortune-telling) and ema (writing wishes on wooden plaques). These traditional activities add a touch of personal reflection and hope to your New Year's Eve celebrations.
Modern New Year's Eve Celebrations
Countdown Events
Tokyo's countdown events are legendary. The city's vibrant districts, like Shibuya and Roppongi, come alive with dazzling light shows, live music, and energetic crowds. Whether at the famous Shibuya Crossing or the trendy Roppongi Hills, the countdown to midnight is an experience you won't forget.
Fireworks Displays
While not as widespread as in some other cities, Tokyo does offer fireworks displays to ring in the New Year. Popular spots include:
Tokyo Tower: Enjoy a panoramic view of the city along with a stunning fireworks display.
Odaiba: This man-made island offers a beautiful backdrop for fireworks, with views of the Rainbow Bridge and Tokyo Bay.
Unique Cultural Experiences
Tumblr media
Toshikoshi Soba
A traditional New Year's Eve meal in Japan is Toshikoshi Soba (year-crossing noodles). Eating these noodles is believed to bring good luck and longevity. You can find Toshikoshi Soba at many restaurants and even street food stalls throughout the city.
Fukubukuro
Book your trip with us.
On New Year's Day, many shops offer Fukubukuro (lucky bags) filled with mystery items at a discounted price. It's a fun tradition that adds excitement to the start of the new year.

 “MAY I pass through? Sorry..!”
You whispered under your breath as you walked through the full crowd, trying to squeeze your way all to the front. It was real full though, everywhere were people who stood in astonishment with a camera in their hands to film the whole event. After all, it was christmas and they're going to light up the largest tree in japan—the event you always dreamed about to experience yourself.
Tokyo, the city of dreams, they said. And well, little you was naive enough to believe it, your biggest dream was to move to Tokyo—away from your hometown, away from your family which honestly saddens you to this day. Fortunately enough, you're still exchanging letters every month to this day. And this month, you'll be able to write about today!
Loud complains and curses were send to your way as you squeezed your way through, disliking how you rudely pushed them away. Only a little and you'll reach your destination. "Sorry... Ack!" you got stopped mid way—a yelp left your lips as people began to push you back again. But you were so close..! Now they're pushing you back again to your start. And it kinda hurt.
"H-Hey..!" you shut your eyes.
A hand found it's way to your waist out of blue, surprising you again as you slowly opened your eyes again. You couldn't help but blink rapidly, your gaze made it's way up to the person who suddenly helped you out by touching your waist softly—creeping you out a bit in the back of your mind. Who would touch a stranger by their waist? You quickly shook your thoughts away.
You definitely were thankful for their guide, leading the way to the front through the full crowd without bumping into someone. You were in awe. How didn't you bump into someone yet? It was so full. You could swear that you surrounded by people and suddenly they vanished from your sight, resembling the ghosts. Invisible to the nacked eye just like they were right now.
"T-Thank you for helping me..." you muttered quietly, you fear that the person didn't hear your words of gratitude though.
"It's alright." it was a man's voice.
You noticed. You could also make out the playfulness in his voice before it was quiet again. You closed your eyes for a moment and you breathed out—the air turned into gas as you did. It was so cold. You consider going home directly after the light up and wrap yourself in your biggest blanket while laying on your bed to warm yourself up again. Your cheeks and nose were red, your hands cold.
Nonetheless, the hand that was delicately around your waist was pretty warm—it emitted heat, the heat that you needed right now. No wonder why you feel so comfortable. Was it the quiet vibe? Or was it the comfy warmth? Or maybe it was the serene moment in the full crowd you shared. It was all of it. You opened your eyes again—ah, you reached your destination at the front.
"There we go." he said.
And just like that, the warmth that accompanied the gentle hold around your waist was gone just like now. Your eyes glimmered as you observed the christmas tree, you were still a bit far away to take in all details. Because of course, there was security so you wouldn't come any closer. The countdown went down. You listened how people counted from three to one.
Three... Two... One...
"A sight to behold." you whispered under your breath, admiring the sight infront of you. Your eyes widened a bit, quickly turning around to thank the man who helped you out. "Ah..! Thank..."
He was already gone like a ghost. You blinked. You didn't even have time to catch a glimpse of his face. You could only hope to see him again and thank him properly. Even though you only remember the warmth in the cold winter day.

Bar Boo summary - 2024/05/27 Boo's 50th bday
Tumblr media
Its Boo's 50th birthday with TTT!
They first talked about going to see COMPLEX at Tokyo Dome together recently. Koji complained Boo took up so much space with his size, that Koji himself was forced to stand sideways to avoid intruding on the next seat.
Kaoru said that it was difficult to see from his seat, due to the people infront, so he ended up pushing the other guys sideways in order to see better, and Duttch ended up stood out in the aisle. Kaoru said 'gomen ne' to Duttch 😌
They talked about Kikkawa's high cymbal kick during the COMPLEX show, and wondered if Koji can recreate it if they get a cymbal ready. They ask Kaoru if Shinya can bring his high cymbal in, and Kaoru said Shinya might actually be watching. Boo adds that Shinya sent him a bday message earlier, and wished him good luck for the broadcast.
Talk of the COMPLEX show takes up the first 30mins.
Boo brings out a board with a list of interesting topics to discuss. The first one is 'Birthday memories'. Boo starts this by explaning how he had a bday countdown party the previous night. He was so drunk he doesn't remember much of the party, but he does remember he was desperate fo the toilet when he got home around 2am. Because he was so drunk, he couldn't find the key to his front door, and ended up fully pissing his pants. Strangely after he got in, he managed to completely clean everything up, despite being so drunk. This also happened to him once in his 20s, and he ended up getting the police to help him get his door open then (with pissed pants).
Koji then tells a story about when he was in LA with Boo, doing modelling work with the company Crimie. They had to share a hotel room, and Koji woke up in the morning to see Boo asleep flat on his back, with his massive belly and impressive morning glory. Koni then tells a similar story about having to share a hotel room with Boo once, and nearly dying from Boo's farting.
Boo asks the others if none of them have ever pissed their pants as adults. Only Tsuyoshi says he has. Duttch says he nearly shit himself when he was in America once, but had to do an 'outside shit' in the bushes in front of someones house instead. Kaoru laughs at this 😆
The next topic on the board is 'Meeting people you admire'. Kaoru says that Dir en grey were once invited bsckstage of a Kyosuke Himuro (vocal of BOØWY) show by an aquaintence while they were in LA. 4 members other than Kyo went, but there were a ton of people hanging around the dressing room door when they got there, so the 4 of them just hung out off to the side. To their surprise, they were called in, and Kaoru was super nervous. Himuro asked Kaoru, 'Are you the vocalist??', and Kaoru had to apologize that the vocalist wasn't with them.
Duttch says that at the recent COMPLEX live, Aiji was kinda playing air guitar to the music, and this reminds Kaoru of what Toshiya had said the day before at the Pierrot talk. Toshiya had said that back in the day, whenever anyone called Aiji on the phone, Aiji would always be playing guitar while on the phone.
Teru from Glay turns up to join Boo on his bday, and the others pretty much go quiet after this. Boo explains to Teru how he met all the TTT members. He first met Kaoru while he was working for MTV. MTV sent him to cover/report on a Dir live, and Boo says that Kaoru and Toshiya recognized him from MTV and made fun of his MTV persona. Kaoru says 'no, thats not how it went', but refused to give his own version of the events when asked by Koji.
Boo ends up crying from emotion a couple of times having all his friends praise him, despite being royally fat shamed for most of it too.

Recrudescence | Ao3 link
It’s the eight-year anniversary of the Tokyo Tower bombing, and a copycat has been sending anonymous countdown letters to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police. Kudou Shinichi, now a police detective under Division 1, has enough suspicions about a possible bomb threat at one of the biggest events in Tokyo’s history. He has a criminal to catch and a case to solve, and he can’t afford any distractions. Now, if only a suspiciously familiar blackjack dealer would stop flirting with him…
here's my piece for @kaishinbigbang! i worked with the lovely, lovely @charlietinpants who wrote the fic! she's a fantastic writer and i had a wonderful time watching the fic come together over the past few months :D

November 23, 2023 - November 28, 2023 -
I debated if I was going to archive this, since this is a Taekook focused blog, but since the 2017 Tokyo trip is in the timeline, and over time people, whether purposely or inadvertently, misremember events, I’m going to go ahead and create + preserve a factual post with real time information. You can read this and interpret it as you like.
On September 3, 2023, Jk was a guest on Yoongi’s show Suchwita (which Tae joined halfway through). During the show, Yoongi mentioned Jimin going to America with Jungkook (Jk had gone for work promos).
Tumblr media
Jk shares the backstory, that prior to the trip, at some undisclosed date “ages ago,” Jimin said it would be fun to do a travel show together.
Tumblr media
After their conversation, nothing came about, but then staff “suddenly” set up a shoot (in America). Jk finishes sharing the backstory with a laugh.
Tumblr media
https://youtu.be/0RKnjVL2kWA?si=1TIDR6pBcz_T66xR, timestamp 11:19
Fast forward to November 2023 and Jungkook and Jimin go to Japan to film a documentary, as reported by the media (we could presume for the time being it’s possibly for the same travel documentary, though at the time of this posting, December 7, 2023, it’s not confirmed it’s specifically for this documentary) -
Tumblr media
Jimin was spotted in Ginza on November 23 without Jk. Unfortunately, the woman was bullied for being honest in saying Jk wasn’t with Jimin, so while she praised Jimin and had posted a positive post and experience, she ended up having to delete it because of bullies.
Tumblr media
In addition to filming for a documentary, Jungkook was busy with promos for his solo debut album “Golden”, and recorded Countdown TV (TBS) while in Japan. As reported by J media, while they were in Tokyo for work (album promos and the documentary) Jk and Jimin stayed in different hotels.
Tumblr media
November 25 - J media also reported that Jk was spotted at an abura soba restaurant in Ginza (ChuoWard, Tokyo), then walked around Ginza with his bodyguard before heading to Haneda airport, while Jimin, in the exact words of the news media “seemed to be enjoying curry at CoCo Ichi in Shinjuku.” Photos of Jk at the soba restaurant-
Tumblr media
J media article - https://friday.kodansha.co.jp/article/346409
Sometimes members post content after the date has passed, but on the same day he visited the curry shop (November 25), Jimin uploaded to his IG a photo of himself dining there (I believe his second photo in this upload was possibly not on the same day, since the outfit in picture 2 appears different to me, so I left it out to not cause confusion).
Tumblr media
The curry shop, Curry House CoCo Ichi, in Tokyo, Shinjuku Kabukicho -
Tumblr media
The media article reported that the two members flew out of Haneda for Hokkaido after. This confirms these separate dining photos would’ve been on November 25, since this is the day they flew to Sapporo. In addition, Jk and Jimin were seen wearing what appeared to be those same outfits they dined in at the Haneda airport -

Ano-Chan on How She Became Addicted to Tamagotchi, and How She Created Nyanoe
Tumblr media
Part of the Tamagotchi birthday celebration this month was a top 50 countdown on Tokyo FM with Ano-Chan and some other familiar faces. Ano-Chan was recently interviewed about her Tokyo FM appearance celebrating the anniversary, and she provided some awesome insight on her involvement with Tamagotchi.
Ano-Chan explains that she likes Tamagotchi very much, and she spoke about elementary school memories. She was once sick and hospitalized, and received a Tamagotchi as a gift from her mother and she enjoyed playing with it so much at the hospital as she recovered. This is what started her love for Tamagotchi!
Ano even claims that she became addicted to Tamagotchi, saving her own money to buy more too. She really enjoyed connecting them to her mobile phone and buy local items. Ano even claims that she’s still addicted to Tamagotchi, and she spoke about the Nyanoe character she created, who appears on the Tamagotchi Uni.
Tumblr media
Ano-Chan explains how she created Nyanoe, the Ano-Chan designed character that was featured in the Tama Arena event for the month of November, 2023. Nyanoe used to be a cat in the world, originally a cute white cat, but it is dirty and gray, and it’s favorite food is medicine, and it eats what it shouldn’t eat.
The reincarnated cat wears pants on it’s head, and probably passed away twice. Nyanoe constantly has vomit flowing out it’s mouth in rainbow color. Ano says that Mr.Tamagotchi has a sense of humor and enjoyed the idea.

... It's the 31 December and I'm "celebrating" the new years in Japan but I'm at a loss of what to do?
I dislike big, crowded countdown events so I'd rather avoid shibuya/tokyo tower ect. I might to to a nearby shrine but is that weird? I don't believe in shintoism but idk would it be ok to join for the countdown? :'D
And also does every shrine do a countdown cause it would kinda suck if I walk there and there's nothing.
..Or should I just go to sleep lmao.
