As urban populations boom, urban agriculture is increasingly looked to as a local food source and a way to help combat inequitable food access. But little is known about how productive urban agriculture is compared to conventional, rural farming. A new study digs in, finding urban gardeners and hydroponics can meet and sometimes exceed the yields of rural farms. “Despite its growing popularity, there’s still quite a lot we don’t know about urban agriculture, like whether the yields are similar to conventional agriculture, or even what crops are commonly grown,” says Florian Payen, an environmental scientist at Lancaster University and lead author of the study, published today in AGU’s journal Earth’s Future. The new study compiles studies on urban agriculture from 53 countries to find out which crops grow well in cities, what growing methods are most effective, and what spaces can be utilized for growing. The researchers find that urban yields for some crops, like cucumbers, tubers and lettuces, are two to four times higher than conventional farming. Many other urban crops studied are produced at similar or higher rates than in rural settings. Cost efficiency remains an open but important question. Most studies on urban agriculture have focused on green spaces, such as private and community gardens, parks and field growing operations. Payen’s work includes “gray” spaces — places in cities that are already built but could be used for growing, such as rooftops and building facades. In both green and gray spaces, the study examines a suite of crops grown in soils versus hydroponics, horizontal versus vertical farming, and natural versus controlled conditions. “Surprisingly, there were few differences between overall yields in indoor spaces and outdoor green spaces, but there were clear differences in the suitability of crop types to different gray spaces,” Payen says. Certain crops like lettuces, kale and broccoli are more naturally suited to be grown vertically in indoor spaces than others. “You can’t exactly stack up apple trees in a five- or ten-layer high growth chamber,” he says, “though we did find one study that managed to grow wheat stacked up like that.” Other crops, like watery vegetables (e.g., tomatoes) and leafy greens, performed well in hydroponic environments. And crops grown in fully controlled environments can be grown throughout the year, allowing harvests to happen more times per year than in open-air environments, which leads to higher annual yields. But scientists will need to keep studying these systems to plan cost-effective agriculture solutions. The finding that urban agriculture can have similar or greater yields to conventional agriculture “is exactly what we have been waiting for in the urban agriculture research community,” says Erica Dorr, an environmental scientist at AgroParisTech who was not involved in the study.

figured i would do a quick write-up about JADAM farming techniques since there's only one post about it that I could find on tumblr and you're not likely to find a more niche subset of organic farming-
TL;DR: JADAM is a korean grassroots organic farming method that uses 3 recipes (a soil microbiome solution, a pest/disease control solution, and a surfactant) to increase yields cheaply and organically, scalable to both small-scale gardens as well as industrial agriculture.

Above is the inventor's youtube channel, and although most content is in Korean, it has enough English-language instructional content to get the basic idea across.
The most interesting aspect to me is the JMS (JADAM Microorganism Solution) that improves the soil microbiome and and nutritional diversity. By blending and steeping leaf mold, salt, and boiled mashed potatoes, you can make an entire drum of intense living fertilizer in a few days.
The JADAM sulfur solution that is used as pesticide is less convenient for a small home gardener due to the inherent risk of inexperienced gardeners creating chemical reactions with sulfur and caustic soda, but if utilized on an industrial scale could cut back pesticide usage so significantly.
I believe that large scale organic farming is too focused on hydroponic growing due to FDA/USDA organic restrictions being so inflexible, and that a revolution in the organic scene is necessary to allow for "true" (non-hydroponic) organic growers to continue existing, and the JADAM system offers a cheap and effective way of farming organically.
The JADAM "Ultra-Low-Cost Agriculture" philosophy is an ideal organic agricultural system, and I really hope it starts to get more attention outside of Korea so that we can more closely examine its feasibility.

I know this is a kind of "first we have to talk about the big bang..." level explanation, but it's because of an event from 2014, Cryotic Front
in 2014, DE launched a new gamemode, excavation, that would replace survival nodes on planet surfaces. this made sense because survival inherently relied on life support being drained out of a space (do not ask why this matters to warframes, the vibe was different back then)
now as you may or may not know, excavation spawns enemies, rewards an item after each rotation, and also awards cryotic after each successful excavation. this would be fine as long as excavation remained a mode that was played about as much as every other gamemode
and then hieracon became the single most popular place to farm
cryotic, as a resource, wasn't completely useless or anything.... but it wasn't demanded enough to be drained out of player inventories faster than it accumulated. some players had hundreds of thousands of cryotic and this scared the shit out of DE because it effectively meant the resource could never be used as a gate for newer builds or else it would immediately be trivialised
two years later, DE comes up with a solution: the Sibear, a resource sink of a prestige weapon that costs 30k cryotic to build. a desperate attempt to deflate the cryotic stores of people who farmed hieracon
ever since, DE has tried to design new content with high value drops (the things you actually chase in the Zariman) and passive resource accumulation (things like thrax plasm) to account for the fact that players might overaccumulate the passive resource during intensive farming for rarer drops
so in short, gyre costs 1,100 thrax plasm because some guys nearly a decade ago dug up too many ice cubes in search of tasty smallgoods

• In March 2023, BrightFarms, a pioneer in the indoor farming industry, is growing by establishing four additional regional greenhouse centers that introduce sustainably farmed leafy greens to a broader audience in the Eastern and Central United States. The newly built greenhouse centers are expected to meet the rising demand for organic food and initiate distribution to retailers by 2024. With this expansion, the company is expecting 10x revenue growth by 2024.
