Portrait painting of Mary I of England in Florence Italy . According Peter Stiffell, the original owner of this image (@PStiffell) it was Commissioned by Cosimo I de Medici.
It has been a week or two since I've started to rewatch the series 'Medici: Masters of Florence'. Every time I start a new period show or rewatch an old one, I feel the need to go through the internet and research the characters of the show. I already downloaded a few books about them. I believe I will make a few threads/posts around the Medici's, especially about my favorites, like Lorenzo the Magnificent💞 and his brother Giuliano de' Medici💔.
If the multiverse really exists, I hope that Giuliano survived the Pazzi conspiracy.
Okay I’m sorry I gotta talk about the parallels between these two…
And these two…
Plus…
There are so many visual and narrative parallels between Cosimo and Rinaldo, and Lorenzo and Francesco. They’re both two sides of the same coin.
But the fundamental difference in their relationship arcs is that where Rinaldo blames Cosimo for his past deeds, Francesco believes that all events were out of their control, that it is fundamentally impossible for any reconciliation to occur, that a friendship between them is impossible.
Albizzi's grudge is fair and one he holds onto despite Cosimo's attempts to apologise and regain his friendship. Their relationship is very much defined by agency and conscious choices that are made at various points in their lives which lead to things unfolding the way they do. It is Albizzi's belief that Cosimo chose to betray him all those years ago. He even says that Cosimo was the one to sacrifice their friendship and that is ultimately why they remain in opposition — it is Rinaldo's choice to hold onto that grudge.
Even Cosimo sees it that way as he talks about how he made his choice many years ago at various points in the series. He knows that by choosing to obey his father (regardless of whether he could have actually done otherwise — see Giovanni’s death threat on his wedding day) meant he could not live the life he wanted. Their fallout is a key moment in understanding their dynamic throughout the series.
Francesco, however, has been constantly told throughout his life that the Medici are the enemy. When he tries to see beyond that, he is swiftly snatched back into these ingrained views. For him, fate keeps him and Lorenzo apart. They can't be together because Medici and Pazzi don't mix. It's all beyond their control.
They have no agency.
Lorenzo doesn’t even seem to see himself as playing any part in the breakdown of their relationship as he happily pins the entirety of the blame on Jacopo (who isn’t blameless by any stretch of the imagination). But Lorenzo still could have done more to show him that he wasn’t simply a pawn to him. He could’ve admitted that he originally invited Novella himself and thus removing anything to be used by Jacopo.
These two dynamics mirror one another so well, but their attitudes towards how that dynamic came to be couldn’t be more different. I love how this show explores these kinds of relationships in the show and how cleverly it crafts such interesting and complex dynamics.
IT IS A STRANGE and uncomfortable feeling that takes a hold of him . while it is far from easy to unsettle an archangel , this sensation is enough to make him step away from the counter , knife dropping from his hand as his features distort in pain . it is dull at first , accompanied by a memory that could easily be confused for something far more present : cosimo would recognize that laughter anywhere . long dark hair flows in the wind and there is more of that giggling - devilish and seductive - before it is muffled by lips colliding in an attempt to claim each other . what the hell ? his mouth feels dry , hands balling into fists while the next images flood his mind . they are coming faster and faster now , one more vivid than the other - - - - until they finally stop . it all goes silent and he stays still , statuesque .
it is impossible to tell how much time passed , but it is not until he hears the click of the door that his muscles begin to twitch , breathing life into his limbs . he takes a deep breath before his mismatched eyes land on his lover , his vision slightly blurred from before . cosimo swallows , but no . no , he cannot simply process this , even if he feels like he should be able to . he just stares at her , lips finally parting to speak after what feels like a lifetime .
❛ seems like we've got a lot to talk about ... ❜
A lil late on the draw but I wanted to share something so I’m gonna go for it anyway! I won’t tag anyone this time just because it’s prob too late for people to see this in time
Again from my Medici fic (one day I’ll be back on my dragon age bs don’t worry) and again a bit later in the fic!
“Can love ever be a sin?” Cosimo asked, his expression by design giving little away. “If I should love someone and that person loved me in return, would God frown upon that?”
Lorenzo furrowed his brow, trying to work out where this was going, but he decided to humour his brother with the understanding that he would eventually speak plainly about what was bothering him.
“I suppose it depends. If love harms, can it be a good thing?”
“But did two people ever love without hurting or being hurt?” Cosimo pressed, testing whether Lorenzo would continue with this line of argument. He still had time to do away with this conversation if indeed it seemed fruitless.
“Okay, you’ve got me there,” Lorenzo held his hands up in surrender, quicker than he may have done otherwise but he was hesitant to say the wrong thing and this drive Cosimo from ever voicing whatever this matter was that was so clearly troubling him.
“Lorenzo, I have loved for twenty years and I have not acted upon that love. Now I have been given the opportunity to do so, would it be wrong to seize it?”
“Brother, are you telling me you found Bianca? After all these years?”
“Not Bianca, no,” he chuckled mirthlessly. “She will always hold a special place in my heart, but I accepted that loss long ago.“
“Then who?” Lorenzo demanded. “And why did you never tell me about this? I could have helped!”
Cosimo laughed again, this time a genuine amusement lay behind his reaction. “Oh I very much doubt that.”
The storming of the fortress near Porta Camollia in Siena
by Giorgio Vasari
During the night of the 26th of January 1554 the Duke’s army attacks one of the Sienese forts, near Porta Camollia, catching the guards in their sleep: this marked the start of the war with Siena. “And the lord Duke acquired much respect, having demonstrated not only his burning desire to challenge his enemy on their home turf but also his incomparable prudence having managed his strategy in silence and with great guile”.
