I was hoping we could see Dokja with a character named Ayin(from a game called Lobotomy Corporation)? They sort of look EXACTLY the same, so honestly, I was suffering from the lack of reference to put the two apart, ha-ha.

I will say I think at least 75% of the time someone describes art as having 'a human soul' its shorthand for 'a positive quality of sincerity/passion/human imperfection etc that makes art engaging' (which is a sentiment you can by all means disagree with and is not a good argument for why a technology shouldn't be allowed to exist, but is generally not being used as a Spiritual argument), rather than 'I believe in an immortal soul which is metaphysically imparted into artwork created by human hands and imbibes it with Good qualities, and therefore art made otherwise is a Evil'.

Getting focused on that wording as the sole basis to make snide jabs about spirituality is only a little less silly than seeing someone go "god forbid xyz" and responding "Ummm actually god isn't real and thus can't forbid anything☝️🤓"

ratio certainly doesn't want to be seen as just another ivory tower genius, but he only feared it when he got the IPC's invitation for his anti-planetary weapon design - attracting the gaze, not of Nous, but of human greed. aspiring to the genius society was suddenly synonymous with selling his soul; he'd gone knocking on the doors of the temple of knowledge not realizing the devil could answer. no matter the lingering bitterness, that more than anything made him stop wanting Nous' gaze.

(the compromise of joining the intelligentsia guild - theoretically independent from, but still heavily funded by, the IPC - is it the best of both worlds or the lesser of two evils?)

but in general, public perception isn't on his radar unless it inconveniences him, at which point he puts a plaster sculpture on his head about it. he doesn't endorse the documentaries and memoirs about himself, but he doesn't serve C&Ds, either. what people think of him is simply not his damn problem.

aventurine, on the other hand... he's more image than person some days. (“the self beneath is extraordinarily faint.”) his job relies very heavily on his cultivated image - he can't escape that even if he wants to, and he doesn't know that he wants to. can he tell where the image ends and the person begins? what if there's nothing beneath? the mask has grown into his skin and he can't afford the blemish of removing it; maintaining it is integral to his job.

he has to keep being aventurine of stratagems, because aventurine of stratagems has to keep existing. he does not fully belong to himself. he'd vowed to become a stoneheart in the very same moment he lost all motivation and reason to do so - now that he's finally found the will to live for himself, he's trapped in the amber of that decision.

(and when he manages to crack the literal and metaphorical amber... the stonehearts vote to repair his cornerstone. what a mercy-stroke of luck.)

he's not afraid of tarnishing his reputation - how can he be, when he maintains a precise level of intentional tarnish? he's not afraid of being seen as a former slave, or he wouldn't openly display his brand as if it were just another accessory. he's not afraid of people thinking he's weak.

he's afraid they'll be right.

cathal is a rlly fun character to dive into when it comes to his mental state and general view on life. they seek too much for a "meaning" to the things they do, and if they dont see a meaning or a point to it, it demotivates them from engaging in it at all. it causes them to slack off so much in their work bc they dont see an end goal to it, considering they find the toons vs cogs war pointless. if the cycle's just gonna repeat whats the point of trying? whats the point of doing any of his work?

and while this is frustrating to an outside perspective aka their coworkers, its clear that cathal is. depressed. their constant exhaustion, lack of motivation, and general apathy and carelessness points to this. these aren't just things any ordinary lazy person does.

HOWEVER i think its worth mentioning that, due to their environment, cathal has BECOME lazy, which might make the underlying issue (depression) less obvious . what i mean is, his job is directly harming his mental state bc it basically encourages his apathy and carelessness. they have everything handed to them without trying, so whats the point. when they get in trouble, their dad makes sure they keep their job, so whats the point of following the rules. they dont even need to do any real work bc, again, no matter what, they wont lose their job. so whats the point?

this will definitely steer someone in a more lazy direction even tho the root problem is something more serious . cathal is now unwilling to do even the smallest of tasks and would rather have his coworkers do them instead, as shown in that one comic from a few months back (i dont feel like grabbing it ill just assume you know what im talking abt LMAO)

this has also given them a bit of an ego! which is very bad. they actively take pride in their ability to waste time and how they dont have to try. which isnt something one should be proud of or strive for. its very unhealthy

i hope this gets built on and cathal doesnt get boiled down to "lol look how lazy this character is all they do is eat and sleep!!!" bc i think the laziness drives from a deeper issue . and their job rlly isnt helping
