I’m going to talk about Sanrio characters that don’t get that much attention from the main brand because I love them sjsjsjsjsj-

Lloromannic (2007)

Lloromannic (Berry and Cherry) were created to be the Kuromi equivalents to Cinnamoroll, they’re little demons who cause trouble for no reason and they probably have my favourite designs out of any Sanrio characters, they appeal to me specifically and I love them for that. Berry actually created Cherry to be his friend because he was lonely and he accidentally added salt instead of sugar into the recipe which made her sassy as a result. The mansion they both live in actually used to belong to one of Espresso’s (Cinnamoroll’s friend and Cherry’s unrequited crush) ancestor Espriana. They aren’t completely forgotten characters (merch of them still gets made and they’re used in collaborations quite often) but I don’t get why they’re not utilised more? They’re a mix of Cinnamoroll and Kuromi, some of the brands most popular characters, if they were used/more I can guarantee that they’d be a lot more popular but eh, I can dream. Another fun fact is that they’ve actually appeared in an episode of Onegai My Melody but Cinnamoroll doesn’t show up once, I just found that really funny.

Pierrot (1984)

Pierrot was created as a part of the Fancy Friends brand (characters that existed throughout the late 70’s and the early 90’s to appeal more to adults due to their calmer and less “childish” designs). No merch has been made of him and he’s a retired character, which is such a shame because I genuinely ADORE his design! He’s so cute and simple, I would love to have a plush of this guy. And he’s actually quite popular from what I’ve seen since there’s a lot of fanart of him so I’d love for him to be brought back in some way.

Magical Twin Comets (2007)

The Magical Twin Comets (Lili and Lulu) are witches and the Kuromi equivalent to the Little Twin Stars, but unlike Kuromi and Lloromannic who are antagonistic towards their counterparts, Lili and Lulu are actually the childhood friends of Kiki and Lala and aren’t rivals with them. I actually thought they were fanmade for a while until I realised they were official and that’s because almost no merch of them exists, trust me, I’ve looked, but I couldn’t find anything. Which really sucks because I’d love a plush of their mouse friend Mimi.

Coro Chan (1973)

Coro Chan is the cousin of Hello Kitty’s bear friend Thomas and his cheeks are apparently croquettes that he sometimes eats on occasion. He predates Hello Kitty, making him Sanrio’s first ever published character, I have no strong feelings about him but it’s a cool part of the company’s history, I get why Hello Kitty’s the mascot now, I wouldn’t want a filthy cannibal fronting my brand either.

Hummingmint (2014)

Hummingmint is a deer character who looks really unique compared to everyone else, I love how soft her palette is and the one plush I’ve seen of her is actually really cute, it sucks that her popularity died out in recent years because I’d really like to see more merch of her she’s adorable.

Pop N’ Berry (2003)

Pop N’ Berry (Berrina, Banyanyan, and Melorina) are a trio of animal themed fruit fairies and they were created in collaboration with Bandai (to this day they’re the only characters Sanrio and Bandai have made through collaboration). I don’t have strong feelings about them but I think their designs are cute and there IS still merch of them it’s just few and far between (I’ve seen some stuff on EBay but idk about other places).

Darkgrapeman (2012)

Darkgrapeman is the sidekick to the superhero Ichigoman (which is Hello Kitty’s alter ego that she transforms into once she wields a strawberry shaped smartphone). Darkgrapeman is another character that I feel like would fit into alt subcultures really well since his design is quite striking (I think the cherry symbol on his face is meant to be glasses since all of the plushies I’ve seen of him have it made from more see through material).

I’ll probably make more of these but idk 🤷‍♀️

-INTRODUCTION-

Sanrio is aJapanese entertainment company. It designs, licenses, and manufactures various cute products. Sanrio also takes part in film production, tv shows and books.  They own the rights to the Mr. Men characters and Japanese licensing rights to the Peanuts characters. Additionally they own an animatronic company (Kokoro Company) and run the KFC franchise in Saitama Prefecture.

-HISTORY-

Sanrio was founded in 1960 by Shintaro Tsuji, it didn't start as Sanrio but as Yamanashi Silk Company, it initially sold silk items but then started selling rubber sandals with flowers printed on them. When Tsuji noticed an increase in sale for adding cute patterns he begun focusing on this "cuteness" and he started using existing cartoon characters for his merchandise (in the late 1960s the company began producing goods with Snoopy).

In 1973 the company was officially established under the name Sanrio. According to Tsuji, Sanri from Sanrio was taken from the onyomi Japanese reading of the word Yamanashi. Tsuji then added “ou,” the sound Japanese people make when they’re excited.

Tsuji hired his own designers to create characters for Sanrio, the first original character was Coro Chan.

Hello Kitty, their second character, was added in 1974 and released the following year, who would become a revolutionary hit, and immediately the company mascot and main protagonist of her long-running franchise since then. 

 The company has partnered with UNICEF since 1984.

In 2006, Sanrio launched Sanrio Digital together with Typhoon Game to expand to the Internet, online games, and mobile services.

Beginning with Jewelpets in 2008, Sanrio started collaborating with Sega Toys in creating characters intended to become media franchises (subsequent collaborations include Rilu Rilu Farilu from 2016 and Beatcats from 2020).

In  2010, Mercis BV, representing Miffy's creator brought suit against Sanrio. They claimed that one of Hello Kitty's companion characters, a rabbit named Cathy, infringes on the copyright and trademark of Miffy. Sanrio and Mercis reached an out-of-court settlement in 2011, for Sanrio to halt production worldwide of merchandise that feature Cathy.

in 2020 it was announced that the company's founder and president, Shintaro Tsuji would step down from the role and hand control of the company to his grandson, Tomokuni Tsuji.

-SOME FACTS ABOUT THE FOUNDER, SHINTARO TSUJI !!-

He was part of a wealthy family (Saegusa clan), as the first child he lived a life of luxury but was secluded. When his mother died of leukemia, Tsuji was under the care of his abusive aunt.

During his studies he  also practiced manufacturing, he would later take advantage of the post-World War II shortage situation in the country by creating goods for the black market - an act that formed the basis of his entrepreneurial career.

His original heir was his son Kunihiko Tsuji but he died in 2013.

I don’t think Merold is like secretly evil, I think he just knows what he’s doing and knows more about seeds than everyone else , Roma probably knows just about the same as him as well but hasn’t said anything yet. Merold said it himself , he's protecting himself and his kingdom with lies ... and since he is likely very familiar with the seeds as an older knight , he likely knows how they appear etc.

Ok now to get to the main point, do you guys know about Sanrio’s lore ? Like as a company.

So basically strawberries are what Sanrio uses as a symbol, the "beginning" of Sanrio as it was their first ever original design that got them off the ground (not to b mistaken with Coro-chan , who is their first original character), but the strawberry designs live on through The Strawberry Magazine (いちご新聞) and most importantly, the Strawberry King (いちごの王さま).

I have a theory that the seeds are coming from the strawberry king (or mayb his fragaria(s), if he has one) mayb he’s going through something which is causing seeds to b able to appear , and average person/collective’s negative emotions causing them to pop up and basically destroy the world. And so "fragarians" are people given/have the power at the same or similar to the Strawberry King to at least defeat these seeds... Perhaps Strawberry King is some sort of deity in the fragmem world who knows ....

Sanrio characters that I wanna see more often

Ms Anna and Chowder

Who were only seen in Cinnamoroll's epik backstory movie, Cinnamoroll: The Movie. They're so cute I'm sad we don't get to see them often. I need to see an interaction between Cinnamoroll or a mention.

2. Princess Lulu (Or Lulu-Hime) of the Sygnus Comet (I think)

Originally from the Little Twin Stars animated series. Not to be confused with Lulu (left side) of the Magical Twin Comets who is mostly seen with their twin Lili (right side), notice that they're all friends with the Little Twin Stars...

So for clarification, I call the top one Princess Lulu or Lulu-Hime and I call the bottom one Lulu Comet or Witch Lulu.

3. Coro Chan: The first Sanrio character ever.

This guy basically started it all and I think they deserve more recognition.

4. Charmmy Kitty (and Sugar)

Charmmy Kitty is Hello Kitty's pet cat. If that didn't make sense to you, Hello Kitty is not a cat (or a human) she is an entirely different something and identifies as a little girl. Charmmy is a cat.

And Sugar is Dear Daniel's pet hamster.

5. Wolf (or wolves???)

Fun fact: My Melody was originally an oc Sanrio came up with for their Little Red Riding Hood fanfic (that was the most funniest summary of MyMelo's origin). Unfortunately for the wolf (who's unnamed) has not been getting proper treatment from Sanrio. Their first design looked nothing like a wolf and in My Melody No Akazukin, they were more toonish but felt out of place design-wise. However, I do find them goofy (in a good way). Bro was My Melody's original rival before Kuromi was created

6. Wookami

An original character from The Adventure of Hello Kitty and Friends. He was a sworn enemy to the gang, a supposed criminal? (not really), a devilish troublemaker, lives on the moon (I don't know which other Sanrio characters live on the moon, but it would rather hilarious to think that there would be neighbours for him) and orders fresh warm milk every Thursday, cuz he's a girlboss.

7. Egbert

Also a character that was only seen in the series, he seems to look up to Badtz-Maru. Unfortunately, we don't know much about him, other than the fact he has a mother.

8. These fricking goobers

They are all seperate characters from a different series. Little Kitty is a sentient doll based off of Hello Kitty and they both coexist????

9. Kuromi's 5 vs the new gang

10. Them.

I don't know if they count, but I'm putting them here. Man, these guys (and the MyMelo Wolf) really need to get updated. I really like their charm and colours.
