Some Milan musings to tide you over until the Derby on Saturday

TRANSFER WINDOW

As expected the January Transfer window closed with little to no action whatsoever. 

We did get 2 young, cheap, completely off the radar guys that no one has ever heard of. That ticks 4 of the 5 boxes from my transfer BS detector by the way. If only they were French! The only thing I thought might happen would have been bringing in a relatively washed up CB to have around just in case. No luck. That not happening tells me that the reports on Timori must be positive. 

It’s also not surprising because CB partnerships can be very tricky. Trying to forge a new one midseason is no simple trick. The fact that it happened almost overnight with Timori and Kjaer last year was practically a miracle. Expecting that kind of thing to happen again is crazy. So we move forward with Tomori/Kalulu/R13 and maybe a splash of Gabbia when needed. Not great but not horrible. 

I should also point out that no one left... or did they?

The Pietro Pellegri experiment has ended. No big loss there. 

Plizzari was loaned out... finally. He’s set to join first place Serie B side Lecce to backup our old friend Gabriel. Remember him? Their backup is hurt so he’s just a bit of a band aid. 

Finally Andrea Conti was sold off to Samp. Thanks for the memories kid. Oh what could have been. FYI he scored in the first minute of his first shift after coming on in a Coppa Italia game. Crazy right? 

According to all sorts of ‘reports’ Castillejo was gonna go and then he wasn’t and then he was and then he was staying then going and then..... fuck it. I don’t know. If he shows up in a Coppa game I’ll know he stayed i guess.

Tell me if you’ve heard this one before. A Milan player is out of contract at the end of the year. The fanbase decides that this is a personal affront and blames him for everything, calls him a piece of crap and wants him ‘frozen out’ of the first team. SELFISH! LIAR! HOW DARE YOU! SHAME!!!! They are also blaming management for being cheap and throwing Maldini under the bus for the situation. How could he possibly be stupid enough not to sell him? You have to get something for him, RIGHT? How can you get nothing???

You can’t control what a player wants and where he wants to go. If he’s ot he’s out and there’s nothing we can do about it. For all we know he already has a deal in place. Good luck Frank.

In the meantime we need ALL HANDS IN DECK to finish top 4 again this year. freezing him out or pissing him off would be stupid. Take that kind of thinking and go read some garbage site like SempreMilan or spend your days watching IFTV. Chasing him off midseason is bad business. Would we have made top 4 without Donnarumma? NOPE. Will we make top 4 without Kessie? i’d rather not find out.  Also I’d much rather be known as a club that allows high priced free agents to leave rather than the one that willfully chases them out. 

Final thing.... 

Remember that Donnarumma guy? He now wears the number 50 and rarely plays for a fantasy team in France that just got knocked out of their domestic cup in the round of 16... WHICH THEY LOST IN A SHOOTOUT. 

Meanwhile we have the best keeper playing in Serie A on a fifth of the wages and probably an eighth of the amortization costs. 

Will I be sad to see Kessie go? Sure. Do I have 100% confidence Maldini will find a suitable if not better replacement? You bet your ass.  IMIT

LOTS OF OPTIONS

Pioli is soon to be spoiled for options. Calabria is healthy. Bennacer is back from ACON already. Kessie suffered a knock at AFCON but should be back soon. Once Tomori is 100%, maybe a couple weeks, we will have everyone back except for Kjaer. That’s plenty of depth to cover the midweek Coppa games. Funny thing is we tend to play better when our backs are against the wall. When given choices we sometimes struggle. Choose wisely mister. 

HOME FORM

We stink at home lately. After winning our first 5 at San Siro things have gone sideways. We’ve only picked up 2 wins in our last 7 at home. That includes losses to Sassuolo, Napoli and Spezia and draws against Inter and Juve. What should have been a nice long stretch of home games became kinda rocky. This is a trend that stretches back to last year though. 

In 31 home games over the last 2 seasons Milan have only secured 53 points ( 1.7 PPG) while outscoring teams 51-35.

In 30 road games over that same time Milan have collected 75 points (2.5 PPG) while outscoring teams 70-31.  

I can’t really explain this. For some reason under Pioli we just tend to play better with our backs against the wall and a siege like mentality. Home game with a full roster? Expect a letdown. Away match with half the team out due to Covid? 3-0 win incoming!

Arsenal report: Aaron Ramsey in line for shock return - and Gunners want other Juventus stars too

Arsenal want to bring Aaron Ramsey back to the club on a free transfer next summer, according to reports.

The Wales international is out of favour at Juventus, where he has struggled for form and fitness this season.

Ramsey has made only three appearances in Serie A in 2021/22, just one of which was a start.

The Italian giants are thought to be keen to offload him as they seek to reduce their wage bill.

According to Marca, Arsenal are interested in a player who made 369 appearances during his first spell in north London.

Ramsey swapped Arsenal for Juventus when his contract at the Emirates Stadium expired in 2019.

Yet although he has won a Serie A title and a Coppa Italia over the last two and a half years, Ramsey's move to Turin has not really worked out.

Mikel Arteta has focused on acquiring younger, hungrier players in recent transfer windows.

But Arsenal also need some experienced professionals to guide their young starlets in the right direction.

That might be why the Gunners are said to be keen on signing Ramsey, who they will be able to open talks with in January.

The Welshman is not the only Juventus player Arsenal are interested in.

The report adds that Arthur and Dejan Kulusevski are also on Arteta's radar as the Arsenal manager seeks reinforcements in the winter window.

They have already been in contact with Kulusevski's representatives and are willing to spend £25m on the Swede's signature.

Juventus want closer to £34m, but a compromise between the two parties could be struck.

Arthur is another who has struggled for minutes under Max Allegri this season, and Arsenal are weighing up a move for the Brazilian too.

The Gunners remain fourth in the Premier League following their 4-1 thumping of Leeds on Saturday.

They are due to face Sunderland in the League Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday, but a Covid-19 outbreak in either team's camp could put paid to that fixture.

Ride-hailing: Uber says industry guidelines are inconsistent, unclear

Before the mid-1990s in Nigeria, television entertainment was just about tuning in and watching any terrestrial channel you could reach, with whatever quality. But the launch of Multichoice’s DSTV in 1996 started a gradual change of the narrative.

While this service majorly served the need of the rich, the introduction of other PayTV options in the 2000s broke monopoly and allowed more Nigerians to benefit from this service.

Amid all the challenges which have plagued the entertainment industry in 2020, Nigerians recently started demanding a pay-as-you-use model which will allow them only pay for what they use, rather than paying a fixed rate for a package monthly irrespective of usage. The House of Representatives was at the forefront of this request.

MultiChoice refused to bend as it says that it does not have the capacity to operate PPV model, as it operates a prepaid pricing model across the 50 Sub-Saharan African countries where it operates.

While the South-African company was busy trying to explain how its model does not allow it to detect when a customer is enjoying the service or not, its competitor, StarTimes announced that it had already integrated a flexible subscription plan where customers do not have to pay for what they do not get.

The model, according to the PR Manager of StarTimes Nigeria, Lazarus Ibeabuchi, allows subscribers to choose daily, weekly, monthly or quarterly plans and enjoy all exciting content on their preferred package/bouquet valid for the period paid for.

Maybe this was not what Nigerians had in mind when they demanded the pay-as-you-go billing system, but it was a lot more than MultiChoice was offering in its DStv and GOtv bouquets. It still provided a viable alternative giving customers a feel of being in charge of what they pay, and what value they get in return.

With as little as N90 or 160 naira daily, subscribers can watch several exciting channels, both foreign and local entertainment channels.

Note that both companies had, at the end of H1 2020, announced a new price plan for its bouquets in response to the new Value Added Tax (VAT) rate of 7.5%.

In its public announcement, MultiChoice noted the company had absorbed the additional 2.5% tax for the first half of the year, in the hope that the federal government would revert to the old tax rate before the end of Q1 2020.

Even though this action attracted lots of criticisms, the company has insisted that it would not be able to continue absorbing the extra costs given the large market in Nigeria, as it was already telling on its finances.

Some of the critics of this action claimed that the company is exploiting Nigerians, making them pay more than they should, even when the epileptic power supply in the country does not allow customers to get maximum value for subscribed plans.

The sports bait

In July, MultiChoice Group announced a new partnership with Walt Disney Company Africa, a partnership that brought in two 24-hour ESPN channels to DStv customers in Africa allowing them to enjoy the very best of US sports.

Note that some years back, ESPN withdrew from broadcasting in Africa and Europe. This new deal means that only DStv customers on the continent will now be able to watch the channels.

MultiChoice was still basking in this euphoria when Startimes announced that it had acquired four-season transmission rights to the Spanish Laliga and the UEFA Nations League, to be broadcast from 2020/21 to 2024 season across sub-Saharan Africa.

Even before this latest acquisition, StarTimes was already making a statement in sports broadcasting. It had exclusive rights to the Europa League, Bundesliga, Coppa Italia and Copa Del Rey. The PayTV operator also airs the English Football League Championship (EFL), Major League Soccer (MLS), Belgian Pro League, Netherlands Eredivisie; and Basketball tourneys – NBA and The EuroLeague; Formula E, MMA and Major League Wrestling.

Away from sports, the competitors have taken their game to the children and family entertainment space.

Just recently, StarTimes partnered with the NBCUniversal International Networks’ (NBCUIN) to bring the DreamWorks family entertainment channel on the StarTimes pay TV platform across sub-Saharan African.

According to Lily Meng, head of StarTimes’ media division, the addition of the channel with its range of animated TV series is a timely deal coming at a time when “most kids and parents are staying home.”

On a similar note, MultiChoice had announced moves to integrate Netflix and Amazon Prime Video services into its Explora decoder as part of an agreement. According to the statement, the agreement is a proof of its aggregator model which provides choice and convenience for customers.

“As our industry evolves, we believe that we are well-positioned to benefit from both worlds – a large, growing pay-TV market in Africa, as well as an emerging over-the-top opportunity, where our own OTT services and aggregation capabilities can drive success,” CEO Calvo Mawela stated.

The company also said that it has commenced field trials for its own DStv streaming products, to be launched later in the year. This will be added to the streaming offering currently offered on Explora, the Showmax.

Observers opine that MultiChoice recent decisions are part of a larger strategy to remain the leading pay-TV channel and content aggregators.

The heated competition continues across all channels, especially on social media where both operators try to actively engage their customers with trailers and snippets from their content. During the Sallah celebration, StarTimes sent gift packages to some randomly selected customers as contributions to a bountiful celebration.

There is also the ongoing promo where StarTimes customers stand a chance to win smartphones, bulbs and other gifts, when they do two-months subscription.

More substitutions, please!

As a response to the coronavirus pandemic, leagues are considering applying for permission to make five substitutions per match rather than the usual three. The motivation behind it is preserving players from injury as they’ll necessarily need to play a very congested schedule when the 2019-20 season resumes, but it’s the sort of change that ought to be considered on a permanent basis for the simple reason that it reduces footballers’ minutes on the pitch.

It’s not just about reducing fatigue, either. It doesn’t take a genius to work out that if you reduce minutes by, say, 10%, then you reduce the likelihood of injury by 10% too.

We’re not talking about the sort of continuous substitutions you often see in preseason friendlies, either. One obvious rule to put in place would be that you can have your five subs, but you can only sub on three occasions, which means you’d have more double or triple changes. It’s a minor thing perhaps, but a legacy that ought to stick around after this terrible public health crisis is over.

The flaws in Germany, Italy’s plans to restart the season

After the German Bundesliga comes Italy’s plan to restart the football season. We’ll know more after Wednesday’s summit with government officials — obviously, by video conference — but the Italian FA meanwhile unveiled their conditions for a restart. And the more you hear about this, the more skeptical you become.

There are plenty of similarities with the German plan. Players, coaches, staff, kit men, physios and others will be sequestered away at their club’s training grounds. They’ll be heavily screened and tested, both for COVID-19 and for antibodies. Of course, that’s just the protocol for training to resume: there will be a whole new one for actually playing the games.

That said, there are myriad issues in simply trying to get the training regimen off the ground. Like the fact that half the Serie A clubs don’t have adequate facilities at their training grounds to accommodate everyone who will need room and board for nearly three months, particularly since they all need to stay in single rooms. Or the fact that while Italy has developed an extensive coronavirus testing program, performing some 60,000 tests per day, using it on footballers may not be a great move in a PR sense. Or that physios giving post-workout massages in full PPE for the first two weeks of training camp — as mandated — seems unnecessary at a time when there are legitimate shortages.

Once you get into games, it only gets more complicated.

Serie A is hoping to cram 123 games — that’s how many are left in the 2019-20 season — plus the return legs of the Coppa Italia semifinals and the finals into less than two months. Then, there’s the ever-present (and ever-unresolved) June 30 “cliff edge,” when nearly a quarter of Serie A players become free agents or their loan deals expire and they return to their parent clubs. FIFA’s plan is nice and all, but it’s subordinate to national employment law, which basically means nobody knows what will happen.

It’s not surprising that, according to reports, at least six Serie A clubs are against any form of a restart. (Among them, Brescia, who are last in the table, with owner Massimo Cellino saying he’d rather get relegated than participate in what he considers to be a pointless charade.) As for clubs in Serie B and the third division, forget about it: there’s no way they can sustain the expense or meet the logistical requirements. Like an increasing number of clubs in the English lower leagues, they also realize it’s simply not viable.

As you’d expect, UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin would like play to resume. He told Italian daily Corriere della Sera that while public health remained the priority, he was “an optimist” who believed there were solutions to restart leagues and cups and end the domestic seasons.

“It will probably be without spectators, but the most important thing is playing games,” he said. “In these tough times we could bring some happiness and a sense of normality, even if they are only on TV. It’s too early to say we have to abandon the seasons.”

Ceferin is saying what his constituents — clubs and leagues — want him to say, and fair enough. Those for whom there is money at stake — not just TV money, but sponsor contracts — have a major vested interest to continue. Of course, that applies to UEFA competitions like the Champions League and Europa League too. In fact, were we to make predictions — a hugely risky thing to do, admittedly — you’d bet that the only football we’ll see in the foreseeable future is at the very highest level, where broadcast contracts and those super-clubs with the biggest revenues move the needle. And even that remains a very big question mark.

Ex-Barca president Rosell speaks to media

This weekend, former Barcelona president Sandro Rosell gave his first interview since 2014. He spent more than two of the intervening six years in custody awaiting trial after being accused of money laundering and financial irregularities, the same accusation that forced him to leave the club. He was ultimately fully cleared, which may explain why he’d have a legitimate chip on his shoulder about those two years behind bars.

Rosell remains a figure that looms large at Barcelona, so his words matter. After all, Jose Maria Bartomeu, the current president, was his right-hand man. Rosell said he wouldn’t run for president again “as long as my mother is alive, it’s a promise I made her,” but he’s bound to have a strong influence on the club’s presidential elections next summer, and he made it clear he’s ready to take sides.

For now though, he’s urging Barcelona to bring back Neymar, which is understandable given that he signed him in the first place.

Vincenzo Montella was pleased with Fiorentina’s ‘commitment and spirit’ after they thrashed Turkish champions Galatasaray 4-1 on Sunday.

Fiorentina made it back-to-back wins for the first time since Montella’s return in April, with new signing Kevin-Prince Boateng among those on the scoresheet.

“We played well tonight. August football is never proper, but we did well,” the Coach said after the game.

Juventus dilemma: Won two trophies and Cristiano Ronaldo starred but there are concerns

The clinking of champagne flutes is still audible at Juventus 'Allianz Stadium. It's the good stuff, provided by Cantine Ferrari, the club's official sparkling wine partner.

A fine beverage and lucrative union, which epitomises how Juventus are on a par with Bayern Munich or Manchester United when it comes to money-spinning collaborations.

But as 2018-19 closes, the question is: are those glasses are half-full, or half-empty? Have the Italian champions lived up to their potential?

On the positive s ide, there is plenty to celebrate. Juventus were battling for four trophies at the start of the season: the league, Coppa Italia, Italian Super Cup and Champions League. They won two of those, or as coach Massimiliano Allegri pointed out at a recent press conference, '50 per cent. We lifted 50 per cent of the cups we wanted this season. "

As Allegri added, most teams would be pleased to achieve half of their objectives. The Super Cup was the first silverware of the campaign, when Cristiano Ronaldo cut down a plucky AC Milan in Jeddah in January. That was the northern Italian outfit's eighth victory in the competition, a new record.

Then, a few weeks ago, the inevitable occurred. The Vecchia Signora (Old Lady) were crowned champions of Italy for an unprecedented eighth consecutive season. No one in Europe's five major leagues has completed such a feat.

Juve sealed the title with five games to spare. Allegri's men started the campaign with eight wins in a row and never looked back. It was a fifth straight championship for the coach known as 'the Anchovy' for his slender frame.

And then there was the twinkle- toed No 7 with the gleaming smile. It's misleading to say Ronaldo puts Juventus on the map because they were already Italy's most decorated and supported team. But the addition of CR7 expanded their international reach.

The Turin club knew this would be the case. They signed the Portuguese for on and off the field reasons. On the turf he has scored 28 goals so far in all competitions. Off it he has beamed Juventus's name and badge into corners of the globe it had not reached for years. They've sold a few shirts and other nick-knacks too.

It's not all sunshine and rainbows in this corner of Piedmont though. Juventus gets out of the Champions League after a home defeat to Ajax in the quarter-final second leg. The Dutch side were not favorites, for all their panache, youthful vigor and courage. This Juve group are hardened veterans of Europe's top club tournament.

Under Allegri, they have reached two finals and suffered narrow, heroic exits on the way to Bayern Munich and Real Madrid. But the Black and Whites were bystanders at the Allianz Stadium. Like the rest of us, they were forced to admire Ajax's speed, dynamism and verve.

This season the Italians didn't quite look themselves all season in Europe, losing to Young Boys, Manchester United, Atletico Madrid and fatally, Ajax. Signs of decline were evident before the dashing young men from Amsterdam dazzled at the arena once known as the Stadio Delle Alpi.

The pleasing style of Erick Ten Hag's boys also contributed to the discontent. Juventus's slogan is 'Winning isn't the most important thing, it's the only thing', but the feeling is that the modern generation of fans have been seduced by the spectacle of Guardiola, Klopp, Sarri and Ten Hag's teams. They want to be entertained.

In Series A Atalanta have lit up the past two seasons with a slick brand of football. The side from Bergamo knocked out Juve out of 'their' Coppa Italia in February, winning 3-0. That was Allegri's first elimination from the tournament since taking over in 2014. He'd won it four times in a row until that winter whipping from Gian Piero Gasperini's upstarts.

There are doubts about the prosaic approach under Allegri – especially in European games

This season moans and groans about Juve's prosaic approach have been louder than ever, from social media to questions at Allegri's press conferences and post-match interviews. The subject irritates the coach, who has regularly insisted that replicating Ajax's total football is nigh on impossible.

Allegri has looked thoroughly fed up with criticism. Understandably the Tuscan boss thinks he deserves a bit more respect after winning his sixth scudetto (five with Juventus, one in 2011 at AC Milan). Since the quarter-final KO his future at the club has been a non-stop talking point.

Do the hierarchy want to hire a coach with more modern ideas, or should they give Allegri funds to rebuild? The Anchovy may seek new waters.

PSG are supposedly the latest club interested in Allegri's talents. The ex-Milan boss and his superiors will be meeting this week.

In an interview with Sky Sport, shortly before the defeat at Roma, club vice-president Pavel Nedved said: 'I don't think there will be lots of transfer activity this summer. We already have one of the best squads in Italy and Europe.

But there could be a few spare pegs in the dressing room. Bosnian midfielder Miralem Pjanic might be on his way out. The tidy and occasionally spiky ex-Roma star didn't shone this term.

Douglas Costa is a menace when fit, but injuries have denied him continuity. Allegri recently quipped, "I have seen so little of Douglas lately that I couldn't even tell you if he is blond or dark-haired."

Alex Sandro, the full-back who was once linked with Chelsea , struggled to recapture his form of recent years and may benefit from a change of scenery. Another attack-minded defender, Joao Cancelo, has also emerged as a potential candidate for a move.

The exciting Portuguese was a revelation for the first half of the season, giving Juve a thrilling attacking presence. His connection with compatriot Ronaldo was a joy to behold and he was beginning to display the defensive solidity that Juventus crave.

But after the turn of the year he returned to his less-attentive ways, suffering too many lapses.

And finally, there is the Dybala dilemma . The little Argentine, nicknamed the Jewel, did not sparkled in 2018-19. His skill is beyond doubt, but he hasn't looked comfortable in the 4-3-3 system Allegri has deployed to get the best out of Ronaldo.

It wasn't so long ago the No 10 single- handedly vanquished Barcelona in Champions League, scoring twice in a 3-0 quarter-final first leg win in 2017.

The Italian press hailed his arrival, the proof that he was Lionel Messi's army. But this season has been frustrating and disjointed for the former Palermo magician.

There are plenty of players who could fetch hefty prices to facilitate a re-building process for Juventus. No one would be shocked if the beleaguered Allegri decided to walk away with his head hero high and a bundle of winner's medals round his neck.

But no one is quite so sure if those champagne glasses are half-full or half-empty.

Atalanta vs Milan is a relatively local derby with Bergamo, the home of Atalanta, sitting to the north-west of Milan. However, the two sides could not be more different in terms of their history of success or the methods with which they construct their squads.

Milan are one of the most decorated sides in European football with seven victories in the European Cup/Champions League. They have also won Serie A on 18 occasions. In contrast Atalanta who have not won a major honour since the 1962/63 season, when they won the Coppa Italia. Milan have a history of expensive recruitment, most recently signing Polish striker Krzysztof Piatek for a reported €35 million in the January transfer window. Atalanta on the other hand have a strong record of youth development and signing undervalued players.

These characteristics of the two sides provide a fascinating backdrop to this fixture but the narrative was broader than that. Atalanta have been one of the most consistent attacking teams in Europe this season under their exciting coach Gian Piero Gasperini and have impressed with their attacking intent.

Milan, though, have been inconsistent to say the least under their coach Gennaro Gattuso. Now, with the aforementioned Piatek leading the line there is a need for Milan to find their form in order to challenge for Champions League qualification at the least.

In the end, Milan ran out 3-1 winners on the back of two goals from Piatek. The tactical battle throughout the match was an intriguing one. Milan showed resilience and defensive structure that has perhaps been missing for the majority of the season.

Lineups

Atalanta lined up in their normal 3-4-1-2 system and were at full strength. Hans Hateboer and Timothy Castagne provided the width as the wing-backs, although the latter played on the ‘wrong side’ as he is right-footed but played on the left. Alejandro Gomez and Josip Illicic provided the creativity while on-loan Colombian forward Duvan Zapata led the line.

Milan played with a 4-3-3 system where the front three were relatively narrow. Former Atalanta player Frank Kessie patrolled the midfield alongside on-loan Chelsea man Tiemoue Bakayoko. Newly-signed Brazilian star Lucas Paqueta provided the link between the midfield and attack.

Ball progression

This season there have been few sides in Serie A that have been able to prevent Atalanta from launching effective attacks as they look to build up through the thirds of the field. Gasperini has developed an interesting tactical concept in that he is willing to allow one of his three central defenders to move up beyond the midfield line to allow for clean progression of the ball.

In this match, this tendency was noticeably missing, perhaps a result of Atalanta being concerned about Piatek and his attacking threat. As such we saw Atalanta consistently struggle to progress the ball cleanly.

Without vertical movement from the central defenders, Atalanta ended up with a chain of five players across the defensive line. They circulated the ball across the width of the pitch from player to player, playing from left to right in the example above. With Milan defending off the ball in a 4-5-1 shape there were limited vertical passing lanes for the Atalanta defenders as they circulated the ball.

This slow progression of the ball from one side to the other was comfortably defended by Milan as they had the time to shift their defensive structure from one side to the other without leaving gaps that could be exploited by the opposition. As the match wore on we saw Atalanta find methods to work around this poor ball progression, but not until later on in the game.

This change to the progression model came when club captain Alejandro Gomez began to take the initiative by dropping into deeper areas in order to receive the ball ahead of the Milan midfield line. This movement towards the ball saw Atalanta match up 5v5 with the Milan midfield. They were able to gain a qualitative advantage with Gomez’s possession and quality to move the ball beyond the midfield line into his more advanced teammates.

Defensive structures

It is interesting to contrast the styles of ball progression with Milan being more direct in moving the ball forward. The Atalanta defensive structure became a 5-2-2-1 with the two wing-backs dropping straight back into the first line. There was then a gap that formed between the midfield two, Marten De Roon and Remo Freuler, and the two more advanced midfielders, Alejandro Gomez and Josip Ilicic, who dropped off the front line in the defensive phase.

Milan were able to progress the ball forward with Paqueta moving into advanced central areas off the front players to receive the ball before playing beyond the defensive line. The movement into the half-spaces of Suso on the right and Hakan Calhanoglu on the left created passing lanes that Milan were able to exploit to stress the Atalanta defensive line.

Milan, on the other hand, created a much more compact defensive block that was difficult for Atalanta to penetrate even when they moved in towards the final third of the field.

There was no space for Atalanta to occupy between the lines, as we would normally see from Alejandro Gomez and Josip Ilicic in particular. The two central midfielders for Milan, Kessie and Bakayoko worked hard at cutting off passing lanes in these areas.

In the end, Atalanta looked to access the wide areas where Hateboer and Castagne faced a disadvantage over the Milan full-backs and wide midfielders. This strategy was difficult, but Atalanta began to get more success when they were able to play in a more direct style in order to attack before the Milan defensive structure was set.

Attacking structures

As the match progressed and became more stretched we saw clear attacking patterns start to emerge between the two sides. Atalanta tried to play a more direct style in order to access the central areas of the final third. This was a direct result of the numerical superiority that Milan enjoyed in the wide areas.

The attacking system for Atalanta was asymmetric, with Ilicic dropping off of the front line when Atalanta were progressing forward. He would occupy the half-space while Gomez was more likely to position himself in the central lane. As Atalanta looked to play quickly into the final third they hoped that they could access these spaces before Milan crashed back. The presence of Duvan Zapata was intended to keep the Milan defensive line from pressing out too high.

Milan were more nuanced in the attacking phase with the ball being progressed through the thirds in a more measured manner. The positioning and movement of Suso and Calhanoglu as they made central runs created space outside the wide Atalanta central defenders who would be pinned centrally. In particular, Paqueta continually looked to make runs into these channels in order to take advantage of slipped passes, as the diagram above shows.

Conclusion

In the end, a 3-1 victory for Milan was fully deserved, if only for the quality of Piatek’s finish for the equalising goal. The home side were applauded off by their fans at the end of the match, a measure of the appreciation they feel for their side so far this season.

In the end, though the three points headed back to Milan as the away side overtook their hosts in the league standings. This new look Milan, powered by the irrepressible Piatek, look as though they might be a force for the second half of the season.

Serie A 2018/19 – Round 2 preview: Box office battles for Serie A big guns

After a largely routine opening for the majority of the Serie A elite, their title credentials will be put to very early tests with many protagonists facing each other or having very awkward looking encounters. So here we go…

After a tricky away opener, no other side lost fewer home games (two) than Juventus in the top flight last season. However, the first of those defeats came against Saturday’s opponents, Lazio

For the capital side, Ciro Immobile scored a brace in his last league match against Juventus at the Juventus Stadium. The Italian striker has been directly involved in 65 goals (53 goals, 12 assists) in 70 appearances for Lazio in Serie A.

Napoli boss Carlo Ancelotti oversaw 420 games as AC Milan’s manager in all competitions. He will face the Rossoneri for the 10th time in Serie A (W4 D3 L2).

AC Milan have only lost one of their last nine away league games since the start of 2018 (W5 D3). The Rossoneri have scored in each match in this time.

In a potential early relegation six-pointer, SPAL and Parma will face off for the first time in Serie A, how,ever they met in 16 matches in Serie B; Parma lead the head-to-head with six wins to SPAL’s five (D5). The last time that Parma’s Roberto Inglese scored two or more goals in the same match in the league was back in November 2017 against SPAL.

In the eight previous Serie A matches between Cagliari and Sassuolo, both teams have won two games each (D4). Among teams in the top flight last season, only Verona (12) have scored fewer goals than Cagliari (15) and Sassuolo (17) in the 2018 calendar year. This could well see a stalemate, yawn!

In the 14 previous league meetings in Florence, Fiorentina and Chievo have never drawn – The hosts lead the head-to-head with 11 wins (including each of the last six) against Chievo’s three victories.

The Flying Donkeys are slow staters of late and have scored 11 of their last 13 goals in Serie A in the second half of their games.

In the nine previous games between Frosinone and Bologna, including games played in Serie A, Serie B and the Coppa Italia, both teams have won three times (D3). Goals may be in short supply for the promoted side as no Frosinone player has more Serie A goals to his name than Stipe Perica (10) – however, the Croatian player hasn’t scored in any of his last 19 appearances, his worst ever streak in the competition.

Genoa open their season account on home soil and will hope to start with a win as they have only lost two of their last 18 Serie A games on their own turf against newly promoted teams (W8 D8). Interestingly, visitors Empoli scored 50 second half goals in the Serie B last season (more than any other team) – on the other hand, Genoa are the team that have conceded most goals, in percentage, in the same period in the Serie A 2017/18 (67%).

Over in Milan, only once in their Serie A history have Inter lost both of their first two opening league games – back in 1983/84. Title aspirations may hinge on bouncing back quickly. Torino have scored in each of their last four away matches against their hosts in Serie A – though, the Granata have never found the net in five consecutive league games against the Nerazzurri at the San Siro.

Udinese have scored more goals against Sampdoria (who we also warmly welcome to the new season after missing last weekend) in Serie A than they have against any other side (109). The Blucerchiati lead with 30 wins to 21 for Udinese in 74 total games in Serie A (D23).

Excluding relegated sides, no team lost more games in Serie A last season than Udinese (11). This will need to change if they are to avoid the wrong end of the table.

In last season’s campaign, only Bologna (23) and Benevento (22) lost more points from leading positions than Sampdoria (20). Concentration is key.

Roma are without a win at the Stadio Olimpico against Atalanta in their last four league matches there (D2 L2). In fact, Roma haven’t beaten their visitors at home since 2014.

Atalanta talisman Alejandro Gomez has netted four goals against Roma in Serie A, only against Chievo has he scored more (five goals). El Papu has also started this season in flying form, scoring two and assisting the other two of La Dea’s four goals against Frosinone in their opening game.

Here you go folks. Both good Lisi and Bad Lisi are here. Conflicted lisi is here too, but no one like him. 

GOOD LISI

ATALANTA: As long as talisman Papu Gomez is there this team will continue to challenge the best teams in the league week in and week out. Caldara? Cristante? They’ll just be replaced by the next youngster to step up. They are an assembly line at this point.

CAGLIARI: Other than the highly rated Nicolo Barella there isn’t much to get crazy excited about here. Alessio Cragno is yet ANOTHER young Italian keeper to watch. Juventus loanee Alberto Cerri is a giant up top who scored 15 goals while on loan at Perugia last year and might also be someone to watch.

EMPOLI: Their roster reads like an honor roll of Serie A vets that have bounced around the league, with Afriye Acquah being my personal favorite. They are always fun to watch and usually are able to bring the offense. Even with the lowest valued roster in the league, Empoli rarely disappoints.

FIORENTINA: Youngest team in the league? Check. Crazy talented offense? Check. Young and talented but also possibly painfully inexperienced backline? Check. Talented keeper that you’ve never heard of that could be a household name by Christmas? Check. Old French guy I had no idea still played (Cyril Thereau)? Damn straight. These guys are gonna be a blast to watch and will push for a top 5 finish all year long.

GENOA: They have a laundry list of guys I either like to watch (Hiljemark, Pandev, Lapadula) or guys that I’m interested to see watch for the first time (Criscito, Favilli, Medeiros). Other than that, they will land right where you expect them, probably 12th.

LAZIO: That back line is skeeeeeeeeeetchy.... but boy are they fun to watch in the midfield and up top. If hell would be watching Chievo play each other for eternity then heaven would be watching Lazio playing itself to a 6-6 tie for eternity. I still can’t believe we shut them out over 2 legs in the Coppa Italia semis last year.

ROMA: It’s an interesting experiment for Roma as they try to replace the best goalkeeper in the league last year with a very average one and try to reconfigure the midfield on the fly. Olsen will be very meh in goal which might expose a backline that I think Allisson made look awfully good last year. The midfield overhaul of Cristante, Nzonzi and Pastore needs to go well for another solid finish. I’m very skeptical BUT I think Di Francesco can steer the ship to a top 4 finish.

SASSUOLO: After last weeks win I’d like to pick them to win the title. Plant my flag. Die on that hill! But I’m not crazy. They will do well, Berardi will resurrect and they will still be a huge pain for good teams. Only negative thought? Locatelli falls flat and is on loan either by January or for next season.

TORINO: You really can’t go wrong with Belotti and Zaza as your strikers. There was a minute where this combo be the strike duo for the Italian NT. I’m not sure if that minute was totally terrifying or a lot of fun. Maybe someone can remind me. Anyways. I like what they’ve done to shore things up through the middle with Rincon, Meite and Soriano and also look forward to seeing how their back line comes together in front of Sirigu. i think Mazzari figures things out and Torino land comfortable in that 8-12 spot with some bumps along the way.

UDINESE: Barak+Fofana+Mandragora in the midfield equals a team that’s gonna be able to contend in a lot of games. The back line is sketchy (50 bucks to whomever can name their CBs week one) but they do have Scuffet in goal. Let’s not forget that healthy serving of LASAGNA up top! MMMMmmmmm!!!! I’m seeing positive things for

BAD LISI

BOLOGNA: The Pippo era at Bologna is not gonna go well. I have a feeling that in time Pippo becomes the next Donadoni. A bit ironic that one just replaced the other as coach of the Rossoblu.

CHIEVO: That 3-2 loss at home to Juve was probably the highlight of their season. They almost beat a good team and got to trade sweat with a living god. It’s only gonna go downhill from here.

FROSINONE: Bad team. Bad start. Feel bad for the likes of Marco Sportiello and Joel Campbell. Sportiello is  fine keeper and Campbell FINALLY escaped Arsenal only to hop on the relegation train. Sorry guys.

INTER: Nainggolan was done for last year. Vrsaljko looks like a red card waiting to happen. Asamoah will break down. Keita Balde will take time some getting back up to Serie A speed. They are one of the oldest teams in the league and have to compete in the CL this year. This will not go well folks.

JUVENTUS: (SIGH)... Let me say this quickly..... they will win the league this year but will fall short in the CL and Ronaldo won’t break 18 goals in the league. For all their talk of focusing on the CL, they still don’t quite have the balls to spend the money to get over the hump.

PARMA: Parma is a nice story but the next chapter reads, Benevento part 2. It’s gonna be a long year for the newbies. My only hope for them being interesting was all the talk of Balotelli going there. Even he wasn’t THAT desperate to get back to Italy. Smart move Mario.

SPAL: Poor Alberto Paloschi. From scoring in his first few minutes for Milan way back when to being in exile at Chievo to finally crash landing at SPAL. And that’s my only good thought them. Oh wait, former Milan youth Petagna is there now. Yuck. WAIT! They have a guy named DICKMANN!! DUDE! Still, they’re relegation material. Sorry.

NAPOLI: I was ready to hand Carlo a giant shitburger for the season. Essentially the same roster for the 3rd season in a row seems like a bad idea and mixing that with an older coach trying to rekindle the flames sounded like a recipe for disaster. I thought for sure Lazio would mash them week one. I was wrong. They look good and now they get us at home week 2. I’m holding out opinion for now.

SAMPDORIA: They have raided the rest of Serie A in an effort to repeat last years 10th place finish. Tonelli, Saponara, Defrel and jankto have come from 4 different corners of Serie A to help out. Old man Quags is still in the house, but can he come close to last years 19 goals? Probably not. Who can fill those shoes this season? I don’t know. You tell me.
