Self-driving cars will be nice at some point, but self-driving trains are great now
Traveling to Copenhagen has further radicalized me about cycling as transportation--but also about the virtues of driverless subways.
COPENHAGEN Returning here a year after my overdue introduction to this delightful corner of Europe allowed me to remedy the most egregious oversight of last Septemberâs trip: I remembered to rent a bike to get across town. But the TechBBQ conference once again having me here as a speaker also let me enjoy a less obvious transportation attraction of Copenhagen: the cityâs driverless MetroâŠ

The world thinks this (3D world) is reality, and your imagination is not. I am telling you, it is just the reverse. - Neville Goddard
Your mind takes everything literal. Your mind that watches and experiences the thoughts you have freedom to think and imagine and assumes itâs true and thatâs the beginning of the tesseract of creation. Its physics. All matter is formed in accordance with what it sees and assumes to be true FROM YOU. It canât function against you or independently.
1. Whatever you want to imagine and see 2. Conscious experience and belief of imagination. 3. Conscious beliefs of what is is then Passed into subconscious for matter to take form in accordance to the probability it believes it is in. What it believes life is, based on what YOU tell it as your what is. The tesseract of creation is SUBCONSCIOUS and CONSCIOUS belief of WHAT IS based on WHAT IT SEES and EXPERIENCES. and it can only ever experience one thing : WHATEVER you feed it. Whatever you imagine. Whatever it experiences BECAUSE of you.
1. You have dominion on whatever you want to imagine, see, think, experience. You imagine and assume everything every second. This moment youâre imagining and believing in a version of yourself and your life. This moment youâre identifying as someone. The last couple days youâve imagined everything about yourself, life, and everyone..
2. Conscious mind experiences and watches these thoughts and sends its beliefs of what is to subconscious for further reflection and awareness of your chosen identity and experience. Conscious believes this is whatâs true. This is the beginning of the tesseract of creation. Where all matter takes form in accordance to you - where itâs forced to choose one probability. Whatever is sent into subconscious is done and done and done again.
3. Subconscious believes this is whatâs true. Thatâs its only function. It cannot work against you and come with another narrative. The conscious and subconscious watches everything itâs given by your imagination. Subconscious forms your entire life based on the experience itâs having, the experience itâs being given by you. Whatever itâs experiencing BECAUSE of you. âYouâre only ever meeting yourself.â - Ishtak Bentov
The contents YOU feed your own SELF is the ONLY thing your conscious and subconscious mind can experience and see and assume to be what is
Thereâs actually nothing beyond mind. Everything you can look at is of conscious creation and vibration. âPrune your thoughtsâ to your fancy. Every single thought is creation, why do you think conditioning has been placed so hard in every possible avenue and facet of daily life? Itâs even imbedded into the music and frequency of the planet. Itâs embedded into fake news, horrid stories of others, fake history to assume whatâs normal and how to be, etc etc etc. Rise above and take control of your own mind, for that is the power and the only source of your life and your experience. And someone else has been running it for a long time now.
âThe masses of people are carried along, obedient to environment; the wills and desires and ideas of others; heredity; suggestions; and other outward causes moving them about like pawns on the Chessboard of Life. Not even in control of their own bodies, destinies, life, mind. But the masters, rising to the plane above, dominate their moods, characters, qualities, and powers, as well as the environment surrounding them, and become Movers instead of pawns. They PLAY THE GAME OF LIFE, instead of being played and moved about by other wills and environments.â - Kybalion
Matter is consciousness and itâs always only changing in accordance to âŠ.. you. âMatter is neither formed nor destroyed, only CHANGED.â - Albert Einstein. âOnly when itâs FORCED to choose one probable is when you stop flashing in and out of probabilities.â - Copenhagen. The tesseract of creation is mind. And whatever the mind experiences, it assumes is true and all matter takes form in accordance to the probabilities it believes it is in. And what does the mind experience - your mind? answer this to yourself right now. Thatâs the only thing there ever will be, can be. The only thing it experiences based on your thoughts of what is, based on whatever it is you want to imagine and see.
Everything âyou seeâ is mind. All changes and transformations or transmutation is based on mind and vibration.
Whatâs your current awareness of what is? Truly? WHO are you aware of being, this second, who do you identify as, see yourself as, paint yourself as, think from, believe yourself to be? The answer is the only thing that ever can and will be.
Whatever is, in this moment, according to you, is the only thing to ever experience and be, and is cast forward for the tesseract of creation of your entire identity, existence, life.

Oh yes, in rather unexpected news when Mr. C and I were discussing travel plans earlier? Apparently, not only is the temporary apartment now ready for us to move in at any time, our new landlord (who owns the condo and just finished moving out) also volunteered to pick us up from the airport with the kitties!
As it turns out, though, that would mean more of a drive than he was probably bargaining for. đ
But, oddly enough? New Landlord still said he would be fine with that!
Originally, the idea was for both of us to head for Malmö so that I could start settling in, while Mr. C came back here after a day or two to get the cats for a direct flight. With probably a third trip back to get the movers sorted out, and the place handed over to real estate people. (If not directly to a couple we know who have apparently started a sideline in fixing up/flipping houses.)
It was looking like Sweden wasn't letting anybody in directly from Plague Island except citizens/permanent residents, so I would need to fly in via some other EU country which would allow me through for a connecting flight. (Hopefully directly to Malmö or neighboring Copenhagen, if Denmark would let me in by that point.)
So, in that case he figured it would be better for him to return to Plague Island so he could bring those poor elderly cats directly. đż Reduce SOME stress on them, at least. And the only airport in the country with personnel to handle international animal arrivals is Arlanda! So, he was expecting a long train ride with them afterwards.
But, now it turns out that family members of citizens/likely permanent residents are also being allowed in straight from here. And he will be required to self-isolate for 5-10 days and then do more COVID testing as soon as he sets foot back on British soil, before he's allowed to travel again. đ
So yeah, it's currently looking like one trip into Stockholm for the whole family together! And then he'd head back here to deal with the movers and the house, with less of a hurry.
No doubt everyone will need a rest at that point--including New Landlord, if he's driving the whole gang including Feist The Yowler plus my stressed autistic ass that distance! đ
Still kinda amazed the guy is apparently willing to help out that far. Maybe especially since he's essentially a stranger, not somebody Mr. C already knew. And appreciative, of course.

2. Work you are most proud of (and why)
Easy! For Now, We May Remain Silent is the longest, most involved fic Iâve ever written. 178k over 8 months, inching line-by-line through my copy of Pride and Prejudice to hit every moment of plot and character development as I translated everything for the MCU. A ton of work, but extremely rewarding. It was a project that brought me so much joy.
3. Work you are least proud of (and why)
Ouch lol Terrible question. I think you have to be proud of everything you write, if only for the fact of putting in the effort to create it.
4. A favourite excerpt of your writing
Because my Pride and Prejudice AU is in my head now (and always), this, from the studio scene in For Now, We May Remain Silent:
Here are her paintbrushes, disorganized and held in the loose grip of big, old coffee cans. The brushes rattle when Peter runs his finger over their handles, the faded red bristles spinning. A thick, flat brush with discoloured yellow bristles might be his favourite. Glancing over his shoulder, he furtively strokes the uneven hairs with his thumb. They all have this well-used quality that makes his chest clench confusingly. Michelleâs been living a whole life with these in her hand, he thinks, and I donât know anything about it.
5. Share or describe a favourite review you received
This is now a post about For Now, We May Remain Silent with minor acknowledgement of everything else I wrote this year because the best answer to this one is: every comment on the final chapter of that fic. Those are my feel-good comments and I treasure them. Not only were the people who read it so kind in their reviews, it also meant SO much that theyâd read that massive fic and had enough thoughtfulness and stamina left at the end to say something nice to me about it. That oneâs always going to be a journey that a bunch of us took together, and I have the comments to prove it! Itâs so special to me!
6. A time when writing was really, really hard
February.
7. A scene of characters you wrote that surprised you
LOL There are classier answers to this, but I wrote Peter, MJ, and Brad gettinâ it on in my second-ever threesome fic, Unhallowed Arts! Did not think Iâd ever be going down that road again, and it went fine!
8. How did you grow as a writer this year
I learned a lot about my work ethic and the difference between writing for passion and writing for expectation.
9. How do you hope to grow next year
By writing whatever the fuck I want. Jumping fandoms. Letting my stories get messier and fighting the easy option of a neat ending.
10. Who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer or beta or cheerleader or muse etc. etc.)
Iâm having a âwhat can I say about @spiderman-homecomeme?â moment that feels very Mean Girls, but instead of discussing her Japanese car commercials in a tone of bitter jealousy, all the good things I could say just make me want to cry. G has really been here for me this year and it feels like weâve known each other a long, long time. Sheâs encouraging and patient and hilarious and lets me get away with the WORST euphemisms. I really admire her talent and warmth.
11. Anything from real life show up in your writing this year
Oooh! In find light, I wrote a happy ending that didnât involve characters staying together, but recognizing that it was better for them to be apart. I write a lot of romanceâso much romance!âbut most of what I write is not reflective of my actual experience of love. This fic is, and that made it one of my favourites to write.
12. Any new wisdom you can share with other writers
I wrote this in a post not too long ago, but lower your word count goals! I no longer sit down and tell myself I need to write 500 or 1000 words. I just go for 12. Such a small number of words is far less daunting to build upon. Write 12, then 12, then another 12! Youâll get to 100 words and beyond with so much less pressure.
13. Any projects youâre looking forward to starting (or finishing) in the new year
I plan nothing, just fall from one thing into the next, so my single goal at the moment is to finish my Bridgerton fic, All the Belles and Whistles!
14. If you could recommend only one work from yourself published this year
Um, excuse me, all of them. I really was going to pick one, but I honestly love everything I write. Thatâs why Iâm still writing.
15. End of Year word count
Itâs somewhere between 510k-520k.

Course Post #1: EPCOT; City of Today?
One of the side worldâs at Disneyworld is the futuristic EPCOT ,or the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow. A place where you can learn about space, coral reefs, and the future of technology. Even though this is one of the most famous parks it wasnât always meant to be an attraction. Walt Disney originally intended EPCOT to be a community where people could work and live closed up in a new experimental city. As an artist Disney wanted his city to be a piece of art, functional, and simple. From these ideas came EPCOTâs radial design. He wanted the city to be like a wheel with the main portion in the middle and routes branching out to the other parts of the city. The center would be business and commerce. There would be resorts, theaters, shopping centers and a 30 foot high hotel and convention center in the very middle of the utopia. Surrounding the main city would be the residential neighborhoods.Â
A monorail and âpeople moversâ would transport people above ground, leaving the streets for pedestrians to walk or bike around the city. Under the center of the city would be the transportation lobby, like grand central station, where people could get on and off the monorails ans people movers. Car were allowed but could only be driven underground, even below the transportation lobby, on roadways separated for trucks and cars. It was theorized that the people within this city would only use their cars on weekends and vacations so there was no need for them on the surface level.
Disneyâs dream was deemed unrealistic after his death and was never completed. Looking at the progress weâve made in the years after his death it seems that Disneyâs progress city wasnât to far from what cities are becoming now. Smart circular cities.
Unlike Disneyâs circular city, the name circular city doesnât refer to the shape of the city but the way itâs run. Ciscoâs âSmart+Connected Communitiesâ initiative works with cities and communities across the world to help them assess how effectively their human, mechanical and digital systems are operating, and how to make them more efficient. They can then turn that information into action, and reduce greenhouse gas and other emissions with better mobility solutions; or waste and water management; or by reusing and recycling materials by integrating legacy systems into new solutions; or upgrading only those components that need replacing.
Like EPCOT circular cities are always looking for new technology. Smart cites depend on the Internet of Things â millions of devices connected to a network. And the network enables data-gathering from those devices enabling products, components and materials to be tracked for efficiency and operational health, as well as reuse and recovery. This data can then be made into models to share between  between city agencies, city leaders, residents, visitors and businesses and improve upon all of them as a whole.
Disney wanted a city that could sustain itself, protect the citizens, and learn from mistakes.Sharing technologies  and data gathering from the Internet of Things can help cities assess risk, develop contingencies and make more effective decisions based on real-time data during natural and manmade disasters to improve the ways they protect their residents and infrastructure and reduce impact. In Paris, Cisco is working to help the city collect traffic, noise and air pollution data to inform its urban planning efforts. In Copenhagen is helping that city reach its goal of being carbon neutral by 2025. Our work with Jaipur, Adelaide, and Las Vegas focus on ways to improve daily life, be it through better citizen engagement, reduced energy use and costs, or increased street safety for walkers, bikers and drivers. This technology can provide real-time information to first responders on which hospitals can immediately treat numbers of injured disaster victims, or which homeless shelters have available beds.
The principles of redefinition, restoration and regenerationare also goals in Ciscoâs agenda. In 2010, we undertook a commitment to find a way to optimise product returns that unlocks their remaining value. In the past year, 11,400 metric tons of product were returned to Cisco for reuse, refurbishment or recycling. In 2018, 80% of the electricity we used globally came from renewable sources, and we achieved an important environmental goal to reduce direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions by 40% compared with levels in 2007.
Although Disneyâs perfect city was deemed unrealistic for the time, it seems that the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow is closer than we think.

Expanding to Trondheim - adding Digs to The Creators Community Family
Today is quite a big day for us in the Creators Community. Weâre announcing that weâre opening 4000m2 of innovation hub in the centre of Trondheim and adding the great community of Digs to our company.Â
Picture above: See more on the new Digs website.Â
With this expansion weâre doing two things. Weâve acquired the best coworking space in Trondheim, Digs, and are welcoming itâs team and members to The Creators Community.Â
Digs was an early mover, and one of the original coworking spaces in Norway. It has a loyal and strong community of tech companies, founders and employees and a strong local position. We share common values with the Digs founders, Mats and Arnstein, who also believe that serving creators comes first and foremost in running a tech community. The are strong operators and Iâm stoked to announce that they will both stay on board and continue to run Digs and our Trondheim operations.Â
Secondly, weâre building a brand new building in one of the last remaining great inner city locations in Trondheim. With 4000m2 of brand new, top notch facilities this will be a whole new league of workspace in the region.Â
It will have a large hospitality section so all innovative companies can host their events there, an open cafe that welcome all the people and visitors of Trondheim that need a buzzing, cool place to hang out and meet, and plenty of modern closed offices for growing and ambitious companies. In addition, there will be a lounge for members that need regular access and network but not their own desk, and flex and fixed desks for entrepreneurs and people needing a great place to work from regularly.Â
The new building is scheduled to open in first half of 2019, and all the existing members of the current Digs space (which remains open until this building opens, but will be subsequently closed) will get first dips on moving into to it. We believe the Digs community to be very strong and are exited to offer improved facilities for them and their growing companies.
All in all, the new building is going to become a centre of entrepreneurship in Trondheim, a city already know for its great technical talent and startups.Â
Above: The new building is currently being constructed
With this expansion, The Creators Community now consists of Mesh in Oslo, Founders House, Startup Village and Matrikel1 in Copenhagen and Digs in Trondheim. It is the second new site we have launched in 2018.Â
You can read more about the expansion on the Digs website. We open for bookings now so if you want to secure your office, membership or event date contact Mats at [email protected]Â

Australian psych-rockers Tame Impala, the mind-spawn of one Kevin Parker, have gone from being an obscure college radio gem reserved for first-movers to becoming somewhat of a millennial-version of The Greatful Dead - about as much of a household name as their particular brand of psychedelic soundgasms allows for. âPeople talk about this psychedelic âsceneâ. I donât know who we overlap with. I donât know who else there is. At this point in our career, if youâre a dude thatâs in to like psych rock, I think itâs fair to say youâll know about Tame Impala,â says Parker. Last night, the allure of Tame Impalaâs audiovisual orgies of confetti, smoke, tie-dyed laser-light, and sedating waves of psych drew a sold-out crowd of ball-trippers and sober dudes with their girlfriends alike to Copenhagen's Falconer Salen. A few TI-acolytes given away by their long hair, vacant gazes and assortment of band T-shirts matched with holey, red Chucks were already perched outside of the glass entrance six or seven hours before the show, when we arrived to catch up with 30-year-old Parker in a back room. Kevin drifts in a half hour or so later than expected, and opens the fridge, only to find it stacked with Tuborg. âI was really just looking for some water,â he says, explaining that itâs still too early for pre-show drinking to begin, for tactical reasons. NOISEY: Hey Kevin! How are you, man? Kevin Parker: Good, good. I love Copenhagen, been waiting for so long to get back here. We just found the same spot we were at last time. Really, where at? We donât really even know where we are, but itâs kind of around the middle. Like around the LEGO shop and stuff. So we got to go by the LEGO shop which was cool. Found a couple of bars as well. When weâre touring, we just wake up and weâre there. Whereâs a good place to go? The Meat-Packing District maybe. Or perhaps Christiania is more your speed. Also, itâs Fashion Week. Well, weâre big in the fashion world. So, you just got announced for Roskilde Festival here as well, which is like a huge deal in our neck of the woods. Oh, did we? Sweet! I know, right? Private concert at a venue vs. festivals â what do you prefer? These days I love playing our own shows, just âcause weâve got more stuff. More confetti, all of our lights - itâs our own thing. Itâs the most like, full-on headie experience, you know? But a festivalâs just as cool. Sometimes itâs like afternoon, you know, and youâre playing as the sun goes down. Yeah, youâre going to like Roskilde. So you recently dropped a new album, Currents. What do you personally notice most about the changes in your music, just since Lonerism? Itâs all the result of it just being one mind. One personâs perspectives change all of the time. And so like if all of the things that make up the music are coming from one mind, the music is free to wander. The other thing is, when its lots of different perspectives coming together, if one of them changes, it doesnât mean the others will. Making music in a group is about compromise. So you control every aspect of Tame Impala's sound. But you've told our Australian brethren you're not a perfectionist, as such. If there were lots of other people involved and I was controlling everything, then I would say I was a control freak. Itâs more just about creativity. Like if the song needs drums, then Iâll do the drums. The elements and vision that I have make up what Tame Impala is.
What do you think your fans get from your shows? Like, if you were a 17-year old Kevin Parker, and you, in this alternate universe, were going to see Tame Impala, what would that look like? Iâm not sure of how much of an event it is for people. I donât whether theyâre just like 'Oh cool, Tame Impala are playing, letâs go check it out' you know, like [have] two drinks - or if they just get completely turnt. I would probably be by myself, because I used to go to shows by myself all the time. I mean, we used to go to shows and smoke weed and all of that. Obviously Iâm not going to recommend that someone does drugs⊠Do people do drugs at your concerts? I wouldnât know, youâd have to ask them. Iâve certainly seen a few people get carried out. That happens quite a bit. I think reading that fucking Noisey article about people on drugs at our show was the most insight Iâd gotten to people at our gig. Obviously it was biased; they went for people that were just absolutely tripping balls. But they were there. It made sense. I mean, thereâs definitely a lot of things we do to stimulate the mind. The kind of mind that could potentially be on drugs. Speaking of stimulation, I've been hooked on the riff in âLess I Know the Betterâ since the first time I heard it. So I have to ask: Did you know right away that it was the one? Thanks, man. Yeah, I think it was literally the first thing I played. I just remember sitting alone in my home studio, a little studio, because I was between houses, and making the demo of the song in about half an hour. Like I had the chords and the melody and I was just thinking, âIt needs a gnarly bass riff.â The way that I know Iâve done a new riff that is cool, is if my hands donât want to do it. If you let your hands do the thinking, it will just be the same old shit. But yeah, that bass riff â itâs actually a guitar with an octave pedal â but that very take is the one thatâs used in the whole song. So what about life outside music? What does a standard day of chillinâ look like for you? I like to watch cartoons if thereâs nothing else to do. Nowadays, if I have any kind of creative motivation, itâs probably going to be directed towards Tame Impala. Like, itâs slowly just become my life. But so much of what we do involves waiting. I think weâre professionals at sitting around and talking shit to pass the time. Weâre pretty good at just sitting in a room. And talking absolute bullshit. Nice. Well on that note, if you could play your way into the face of death at one historical event â like those epic string quartet dudes on the Titanic â what would it be? How aboutâŠthe plague in Egypt. (laughs) Whatâs one of those apocalypse movies? The Day After Tomorrow? Yeah, War of the Worlds, something like that, that would be pretty sick. Would you be playing âLet It Happenâ? We have a song called âApocalypse Dreamsâ but thatâs just too obvious. Weâll play the album in its entirety. It would be an honor.

Bidenâs Coming China Headache: Climate Change And âDeveloping Countriesâ
New Post has been published on https://perfectirishgifts.com/bidens-coming-china-headache-climate-change-and-developing-countries/
Bidenâs Coming China Headache: Climate Change And âDeveloping Countriesâ
A Biden presidency, which now seems most likely, will have plenty on its foreign policy plate, ranging from relations with Russia, China and Europe to the Iran question in the Middle East. But it is likely that global climate change policy, especially in relation to Chinaâs position in it, will be among the most contentious challenges it will face in international diplomacy.
If we are slated for a Biden presidency, we will get the most climate change-conscious administrations in US history. The climate agenda has been elevated to a âwhole of governmentâ approach, straddling the key portfolios of national security, foreign policy, and economy and finance. From January 20th 2021,  âfighting global warmingâ will be elevated to a primary concern of the vast US government bureaucracies  ranging from the EPA and the Federal Reserve to the Pentagon and the State Department.  A Biden administration would âuse every tool of American foreign policy to push the rest of the world to raise their ambitions alongside with the USâ and it would âpursue strong measuresâ to stop other countries from cheating on their climate commitments.    Â
The âGrand Bargainâ of Paris
No doubt a future Biden presidency would seek to emulate the  lauded bargain between Obama and Chinaâs President Xi that set the foundations of the non-binding Paris Agreement. The 2015 agreement was hailed as ex-President Obamaâs âbreakthroughâ understanding with China that the latter too would join in the global effort to cut emissions. In a move welcomed by European leaders, Biden has vowed that the US would re-join the Paris climate accord on his first day in the White House in January. It will seek to reverse President Trumpâs formal withdrawal notice from the Paris Agreement issued in November 2019.
To steer this vision â an example of an enlightened , âlead from behindâ, multilateral approach in concert with Europe â Â Biden has appointed the aristocratic Europhile John Kerry to a Cabinet-level role as âclimate tsarâ. Kerry oversaw the negotiations that led to the Paris Agreement and signed the accord on the behalf of the US in 2016 as ex-President Obamaâs Secretary of State (2013 â 2017). As âspecial presidential envoy for climateâ, Kerry does not require Senate confirmation. He has vowed that under his watch âAmerica will soon have a government that treats the climate crisis as the urgent national security threat it isâ.
To the proponents of âclimate crisisâ, a Biden-Xi collaboration is an opportunity to set the terms for meaningful global cooperation on climate change policies. For the more hard headed diplomats â not least Chinaâs âwolf warriorsâ â more at home reading Machiavelliâs The Prince than Obamaâs latest bestseller A Promised Land, Â the hopes of a US-China âgrand bargainâ will seem naĂŻve.
The celebrated Paris Agreement was only so much of smoke and mirrors as far as Chinaâs practitioners of strategic statecraft were concerned. For Obamaâs end of the bargain, his administration unleashed such punitive measures on USâs own economic interests as the Clean Power Plan and the Waters Of The US Act by Executive Orders (since the Paris Agreement was conveniently not a âtreatyâ requiring an impossible Senate approval). At Xiâs end, China promised to peak its emissions by 2030 at a level and a rate of subsequent decline that were not specified.
Nor were Chinese planners unaware that research showed that Chinaâs commitment to peak by 2030 was actually less ambitious than continuing business as usual, that the countryâs emissions would have peaked by then anyway whatever it did (or not). Meanwhile, signing the agreement did not stop China from approving 23 gigawatts of new coal-power projects the first half of 2020, more than the previous two years combined. Note that China had commissioned more coal power capacity than the rest of the world combined in those two years. Â
The Developing Country Position
From the earliest UN negotiations starting in 1994 under the Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), China firmly and consistently played the âThird Worldâ position. Developing countries carried âcommon but differentiated responsibilitiesâ. This meant that while developed countries (primarily the West, but also including Japan) adopted binding commitments to reduce carbon emissions by specified amounts, the developing countries not only did not have any binding policy commitments but were expected to receive considerable sums in âclimate financeâ to assist mitigating and adapting to climate change.
The BASIC group (Brazil, South Africa, India and China â the worldâs four largest âdeveloping countriesâ) formed a bloc in 2009 to act jointly at the Copenhagen climate summit, including a possible united walk-out if their âcommon minimum positionâ was not met by the developed nations. Effectively, the Kyoto Protocol, brought into force in 2005, became an exercise in massive international income distribution, as senior UN officials openly admitted.
To be sure, the âthird worldâ position is not necessarily a cynical one. The rationale behind the âdeveloping countryâ position is based on the reasonable grounds of equity and historical responsibility. Since the major portion of the stock of man-made greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the earthâs atmosphere is accounted for by the industrialised West, the developed countries should launch serious efforts to reduce their own emissions before calling upon the developing countries to contribute.
By the time Trump came into office in 2016, China was already the worldâs largest emitter of GHGs by far. By then it was also long evident that it was a stretch to call China a âdevelopingâ country in any meaningful sense. President Trump boiled over last year on Chinaâs âdeveloping countryâ status: among his many tweets, âThe WTO is BROKEN when the worldâs RICHEST countries claim to be developing countries to avoid WTO rules and get special treatment. NO more!!!â
Chinaâs emergence as an economic and military power challenging US dominance in Asia and beyond is a fact not denied even by the left wing of the US Democratic party. China is one of the prime movers of global commodity and financial markets. Its investments in the much hyped Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), often grossly inflated in the business press, have nevertheless grown into an extensive web of infrastructure construction and investments in over a hundred countries.
As a source of loans for deficit-ridden governments in Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Europe, China has emerged as the major competitor to the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, the Washington-based pillars of the post-WWII economic international system. Indeed, David Malpass, whose appointment in 2019 as World Bank chief was supported by President Trump, was an outspoken critic of the World Bankâs loans to China (and India). Malpass quite rightly argued that these countries had become rich enough to tap global capital markets on reasonable terms.
Chinaâs Red Line
If China is no more a âdeveloping countryâ with little responsibility in the West-led global âfight against climate changeâ, then just what can a Biden administration extract from the Chinese government in decarbonization commitments? Chinaâs state planners are likely to have a keener appreciation for the laws of physics and economics in their assessments of decarbonization than their counterparts in the West who are busy pursuing a quixotic Green Industrial Revolution. They will insist on delivering to their people an Industrial Revolution first, of the sort enjoyed by the West since its birth over two centuries ago, before signing up to anything that might come in the way.
For President-for-life Mr. Xi, who does not have elections to contend with, it is a one-shot gamble on regime stability. It would be the height of folly to imagine that President Xi would turn to Rudyard Kiplingâs bravado âIf you can make one heap of all your winnings⊠And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-tossâ in some kind of moral turn towards international cooperation with the climate crusaders in a Biden administration. Â
Regime survival, Chinaâs red line, is predicated on meeting the material aspirations of ordinary citizens, the only source of legitimacy afforded to unelected governments throughout history. Chinaâs government fended off â with a mixture of confrontation and unstable interim agreements â President Trumpâs explosive tariff diplomacy against Chinaâs intellectual property theft, gaming of the WTO system and other US complaints. It will do so no less with the threats of border taxes on its carbon-intensive exports if that were to be John Kerryâs and his European alliesâ stick in climate policy negotiations. Â
To the Trump-voting âdeplorablesâ, John Kerry is âthat guy whoâs hanging out in Europe enjoying it, talking about the climate and flying around on his private jetâ. But it will be an aged President Biden who will be landed with a policy headache of monumental proportions if he fails to handle climate change and China in no uncertain manner.

Little update:
Mr. C has talked to the animal transport people, and got the main paperwork scanned/sent back to them today.
It looks like they should, indeed, be able to fly in through Copenhagen! đHe's also checked--and got in touch with the Danish Embassy to clarify one point--and we humans should be good to fly in through there too, under current Plague Time regulations. (No destination address in Denmark apparently required, after all, if we're heading straight on to Sweden. Which, in this case, would be right across the bridge!)
So, that's all a relief.
What has had me in further Quiet Mental Breakdown Mode all day since then, though, is that we're now that much closer to a firm family moving date: most likely 31 May! đ±đ
Apparently there are only a couple of flights a week which can also take the cats within our required time frame, likely because Plague Time. And for various complicated reasons I'm not sure I totally got, he says that day would work better for Project Family Import than the following Monday.
(Then, of course, after helping us all get settled in--and no doubt a few days' much-needed rest for his own good!--he'll need to fly back to Plague Island. Then he can finish making sure all our shit is properly packed up and handed over to the movers, and get other loose ends tied up while he's self-isolating for 10 days minimum. Then, pending further COVID testing, he should theoretically be able to finally gtfo and haul ass back to Sweden for good. *fingers crossed*)
So yeah, I'd better get my personal belongings packed up and some other stuff taken care of before the end of the month, and get as ready as I ever will be to make another international move with two suitcases! đ
This time, plus likely some spare space in his luggage, one Giant Wheelchair Bag, and our two feline dependents. And I can be way more confident that he will actually ship the other belongings that he says he will, unlike my freaking hoarder dad. đ
So yeah, that's where we are right now. And also mostly why I haven't been around much lately.
I would maybe be feeling slightly less unsettled if I did already have a valid passport among other details sorted out, but hey. There really is fuck all any of us can do to control whatever course the US Embassy/NHS/etc. decide to follow. ÂŻ\_(ă)_/ÂŻ
Which kinda leads me to the opposite of worrying about it all less, but there is now at least a more definite time frame for the worries!
Oh yes, just reminded by that last travel update (full of unexpected kindness!) getting another note.
Mr. C contacted an animal transport specialist business, figuring they'd know what to do and what steps to follow, so much better than we do. Especially with a lot of international things turning more complicated post-Brexit--not to mention all the extra constantly shifting Plague Time considerations thrown on top. đ”
Turns out that the cats should also be able to fly into Gothenburg. For comparison to what we were afraid would be necessary:
Shaving off about half the trip would help so much! Especially considering the whole point is dragging along a couple of poor discombobulated cats. đ At least the actual flight shouldn't be longer than 2-2.5 hrs, in any case.
(BTW, Mirrors has lived in this house since he was like 4-5 weeks old, and Feist was born here. They're also 16 and 17 now, so yeah I expect that the whole relocation process will be extra stressful on them in general! đ© But, the best we can do is try to make it as smooth as possible.)
Best of all would be if we could just bring them in through Copenhagen, and he's apparently looking into the current regulations affecting all of us there now. *fingers crossed*
That's just right across the Ăresund. And it looks like the airport is also not that far from the bridge/tunnel, which should be even handier! I wouldn't even feel too bad about taking New Landlord up on his offer to drive us, if that option is open after all.
But yeah, nothing about this whole moving operation is simple. And I could easily vomit forth a whole novel-length vent about how the combo of political BS (e.g., Brexit) and Plague Madness has been driving me even crazier, in terms of unpredictability in planning practically from one moment to the next.
(Hell, I still have no idea if I will even be able to get a valid passport in time for the flight plans. Can't even request an Embassy appointment until within 5 days of whenever our flight is booked. đ„Ž)
[ETA: Since we've been back out of lockdown, they're starting to make some other appointments available again a few days a week for issues which absolutely must be handled in person. But, it still looks like I'll realistically have to wait for an emergency appointment, and pray that they will have their shit together enough to give me a new passport in time for us not to waste a bunch of money rescheduling flights.
There are few enough slots available still, for a single week in advance--and those seem to be getting snapped up as soon as they're posted. đ Not really a surprise, with the number of people who are probably feeling at least as desperate by now, but a frustrating situation all around.]
But, I will spare everyone most of that--at least for now! I don't have the energy right now, anyway.
It is a bit of a relief, though, that we shouldn't need to fly into Stockholm after all.

I could set a hell of a thanksgiving table with this arsenal of dishes I spotted in Copenhagen. Unfortunately, this is not my tableware storage, however... True Story: when I relocated to London, the movers who were unpacking my kitchen asked how many people were going to be living in my flat. âOne, why?â I replied. They laughed and couldnât understand why I had so many dishes. They said I only needed one of everything. đđ€·đŒââïž Fools. So, whoâs getting excited to set their thanksgiving table?? . . #dishes #tableware #glassware #tablesetting #thanksgiving #thanksgivingtable #placesetting #dinnerware #ceramics #tablesettingideas #holidays #decor #home #homedecor #entertaining (at Copenhagen, Denamrk) https://www.instagram.com/p/B48RdI7pMYm/?igshid=3thgq8um7j4d

Coveted Cuisine, Craft Brews, and Lush Landscapes: The 4-Day Weekend in SkÄne, Sweden
Sweden has been making headlines quite a bit recently thanks to award-winning environmental activist Greta Thunberg. The Swedish 16-year-oldâs impassioned campaign about the climate crisis has earned international recognition. But the Scandinavian country has also built a successful reputation with the international jet set for its picturesque scenery, charming cities, sharp design focus, and eclectic culinary scene. And while bustling cities like Stockholm and Gothenburg tend to attract the majority of visitors, donât make the all-too-common mistake of overlooking SkĂ„ne. ]] SkĂ„ne is the southernmost county (or lĂ€n) in Sweden. Itâs just a quick train ride from the Danish capital of Copenhagen and its international airport. Here, travelers will find a utopian combination of rural countrysides cozied up to cosmopolitan pockets teeming with award-winning restaurants, fascinating museums, top-notch hotels, and more. The regionâs laid-back lifestyle is almost palpable upon arrival, and offers a breath of fresh air that you wonât find in other Nordic hot spots. Full of creative minds, entrepreneurial spirit, and proud locals, SkĂ„ne is all about collaboration versus competition, and itâs common to find its most innovative movers and shakers working together to launch new products and one-of-a-kind experiences for locals and tourists alike. With so many things to do and see, youâll have trouble squeezing everything into a four-day visit; but itâs possible. Hereâs how to eat, drink, stay, and play in one of Swedenâs most underrated travel destinations. But just a warningâyou probably wonât want to leave.
]]
Key Regions
Malmö: A cultural hub of makers and doers, Malmö offers something for everyone. The capital of SkĂ„ne, this city is bursting to life with up-and-coming designers, celebrated chefs, and all of the other lures youâd expect from a world-class city. Itâs also the perfect place to use as a home base during a visit, no matter how long. Lund: Marked by its cobblestone streets and half-timbered houses, Lund offers a thousand years of history, all within walking (or biking) distance. Home to Lund University (founded in 1666), the city has become an epicenter for knowledge, tradition, and history. Central SkĂ„ne: An idyllic respite in the heart of the great outdoors, Central SkĂ„ne is where to go for anyone looking to reconnect with nature. Brimming with sprawling forests, sparkling lakes, and abundant wildlife, this region once served as the rural playground for Swedenâs noble classâstill boasting the grand castles and manor homes to prove it. Stellan Skarsgardâs Sweden: A Weekend in Ljusterö ]] Northwest SkĂ„ne: Adventure-seekers looking for an adrenaline-infused escape should head toward the Northwest. Here, staggering cliffs, expansive cave systems, and dramatic coastlines lend themselves to days spent surfing, mountain biking, rock climbing, kayaking, trekking, camping, and more. Ăsterlen: Better known as Southeast SkĂ„ne, this romantic region is noted for its undulating hillsides, flowering meadows, and unspoiled white sand beaches that rival those of the Caribbean. A longtime retreat for Swedenâs esteemed artists and writers, Ăsterlen offers a slowed-down way of life that makes it ideal for lovebirds or anybody seeking inspiration and solitude.
]]
Where to Stay in SkÄne
Story Hotel Studio Malmö: Book a room at the Story Hotel Studio Malmö, just a five-minute stroll from the cityâs Central Station. The hotel features a modern Scandinavian design, and each room offers sweeping overlooks of the Ăresund bridge or the lively city center. Take the elevator up to the 14th floor to grab Japanese-inspired cuisine at Kasai In The Sky, or sip cocktails at its rooftop bar. You can also rent bikes from the lobby and spend your mornings cycling through town. A Scandinavian Summer: The All Day, All Night Adventure Land Hotel MĂ€ster Johan: For a more classic style, score a stay at Hotel MĂ€ster Johan. Constructed in 1990, the property is known for its upscale digs outfitted with cozy touches like natural wood, exposed brick, and old-world furniture. Its location is hard to beat, just steps from Lilla Torg Square, which is lined with cafes, restaurants, and bars. Luckily, thirsty guests wonât have to travel far for a drink, since the hotel is also home to MJâs, one of Malmöâs hottest cocktail lounges. ]] Quality Hotel The Mill: Aiming for the best bang for your buck? Then look no further than Quality Hotel The Mill. After recently undergoing a complete renovation, the clean and contemporary three-star hotel reopened its doors earlier this year. Located just a stoneâs throw from Malmöâs popular MöllevĂ„ngen district (or âMöllanâ to locals), this newcomer boasts 224 rooms, a full-service restaurant, and popular barâeven better, rooms typically start around $70 per night.

Where to Eat in SkÄne
Malmö Saluhall: Make this indoor food market one of your first stops in Malmö. A smorgasbord of culinary delights, Malmö Saluhall is jam-packed with cafes, bakeries, cheese shops, ice cream counters, fishmongers, and more. Grab a quick bite at Hedvigsdal Vedugn & Vin for wood-fired pizza made with organic flour and seasonal toppings (many of which are actually grown on their own farm). Saltimporten Canteen: In a sleek, industrial space overlooking the water next to VĂ€stra Hamnen, the restaurant serves up an ever-evolving menu of modern Swedish dishes with international influences. Two options are available daily (a meat/fish dish or vegetarian option) and the price-fixed menu is available for just 105 SEK (less than $11 USD). Make sure to grab a seat at one of the communal tables early on in the afternoon. The restaurant is only open during lunch hours Monday through Friday and packs out with legions of loyal customers. ]] Restaurang SPILL: Another popular lunch spot, SPILL specializes in imaginative Swedish cuisine with a sustainable twist. Approximately 90 percent of the menu is created using ingredients that local suppliers canât sell to other restaurants or grocery stores (and would otherwise be thrown away). Chef Erik Andersson opened the restaurant with his wife, Ellinor Lindblom, to help combat food waste and change the way people think about consumption. The menu changes every day based on the shipments SPILL receivesâand, needless to say, itâs been a smash hit. Lyran: Prepare to be dazzled in the cozy confines of Lyran, a White Guide restaurant, and one of SkĂ„neâs trendiest eateries. Dimly lit and impossibly romantic, dedicate a few hours to savoring each dish of their eight-course tasting menu. Every ingredient is sourced from local producers, and the menu tends to change daily, but never fails to impress. They also offer incredible wine pairings as well as non-alcoholic beverage pairings using fresh-pressed juices, locally made ciders, artisanal teas, and more. Far i Hatten: This beloved restaurant is housed within an unassuming cottage (dating back to 1894) in the heart of Folkets Park. Here, itâs common to find families gathered around shared rustic dishes, or friends indulging in Sunday brunch or a weekday fika over coffee and pastries. In the winter months, curl up next to the fire and warm up with some natural wineâanother Swedish specialty. Johan P: Searching for the freshest catch in SkĂ„ne? Reserve a table for breakfast, lunch, or dinner at Johan P. The iconic restaurant has remained a staple for decades, known for their expertly prepared lobster, freshly shucked oysters, and other seafood plates. With its crisp, white table clothes, never-ending wine list, and attentive staff, itâs also a perfect spot for date night on the town. Restaurant VĂ€stergatan: For a quintessential Scandinavian experience, donât miss dining at VĂ€stergatan. The charming restaurant only opens for supper service Monday through Saturday, but has quickly developed a devout following amongst Malmöâs discerning locals and visiting gastronomes alike. The multi-course menu typically features locally inspired recipes with a global spin, and the main dish is usually updated each week. Guests can expect elevated pairings like slow-baked cod served alongside chanterelle, white onion, and dillâas well as wine or juice pairings for a few Swedish krona more.
Where to Drink in SkÄne
]] Lilla Kafferosteriet: Thereâs no better way to start the day than with a fresh-brewed cup of coffee. Get your morning pick-me-up from Lilla Kafferosteriet, a haven for serious java nerds. Serving only the finest hand-selected beans, they take pride in their roasting process to preserve flavor and guarantee the best taste possible. Check out their very own line of canned and carbonated coffee varieties that are certain to wow your tastebuds. Spirit of Hven Backafallsbyn: Nestled on the island of Hven (in the strait of Ăresund between Denmark and Sweden), thirsty travelers will be excited to discover Spirit of Hven. Equal parts hotel, gourmet restaurant, and distillery, this destination is a feast for the senses. Schedule a guided tour of the facilities, where you can spend your afternoon sipping their award-winning lineup of organic spirits, including vodka, gin, and aquavit. Also be sure to sample their single-malt whisky and Organic Summer Spirit made with oranges, rhubarb, elderflower, and apples. 12 Ways to Amp Up Your CoffeeâWithout Butter Malmö Brewing Co & Taproom: For the most impressive selection of beer in all of SkĂ„ne, pay a visit to the Malmö Brewing Co & Taproom. In addition to brewing their own beer, they also feature a diverse collection of suds from other local producers (ranging from fruit-forward sours to robust imperial stouts and everything in between). Officially launched in 2010 by Anders Hansson, the dream of opening his own brewpub was decades in the making. Today, itâs credited with igniting Malmöâs booming beer industry and remains a fan favorite. Care/of: One of the more recent additions to the cityâs ever-changing nightlife scene is Care/of. The bar first opened its doors in 2016 with the goal of mixing up innovative cocktails using only the finest ingredients. Already a local legend, donât miss their signature tipples like Them Apples (made with duck fat-infused Woodford Reserve, thyme syrup, and rosemary bitters) or Last Bubbles (featuring Brokerâs London Dry Gin, Chartreuse, maraschino, lemon, honey, and matcha foam).

What to Drink in SkÄne
Secret Sisters Brewing: Secret Sisters Brewing is a small, independent, women-run brewery, located at the Minus-1 Brewers Collective at Bishops Arms Gustav Adolfs Torg in Malmö. The group (made up of Irina CarlĂ©nis, Natalie Eriksson, Paulina Nordling, and Erika NorĂ©n) is dedicated to changing the often-narrow view on who a brewer might be by churning out damn good beers. Sip on Our Space, a delicious wheat beer made with fresh chamomile and pickled lemons, crafted in collaboration with Rocket Brewing Company and Two Forks. Hasse Fasan: This small but mighty local brewing operation was started by Patrik Norrlöf in 2016 and has been making waves ever since. Also part of the Minus-1 Brewers Collective, Hasse Fasan is known for creative concoctions like Coated (a mix of British and American Pale Ale, with a balance between earthy spices and fresh fruit notes) and peppery Belgian saison. Hyllie Brewery: Hyllie Brewery is a microbrewery found in Malmöâs southern outskirts, which debuted in 2015 with the goal of creating artisanal beer with heart and soul. Today, their brews can be found in many of the bars throughout SkĂ„ne, as well as represented in the industryâs top beer festivals and events. Pyschopipes is also powered by Hyllie Brewery, known for putting whimsical twists on long-standing staples. Try their Blue Whale, a bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout that clocks in at a whopping 18.7 percent. ]] Gnista: Another prime example of a locally made, collaborative effort is Gnista Spirits. As the trend of nonalcoholic spirits continues to take the world by storm, Gnista was created to give people the satisfaction of enjoying a premium spirit, just without the alcohol (or the accompanying hangover). Made at SPILL in Malmö, it boasts a complex flavor profile using high-quality ingredients like wormwood, raisins, apricots, and almond extract. Itâs launching stateside early next year, and the company is gearing up to debut its second product in the coming months.

Courtesy Image Oatly: Youâve probably seen Oatly being served in your favorite coffeehouse or on the grocery store shelf, but you may be surprised to learn that the brand was born in SkĂ„ne. Based on Swedish research from Lund University, Oatlyâs patented enzyme technology replicates natureâs own processes, transforming fiber-rich oats into a nutritional milk substitute thatâs perfectly engineered for humans. Flavour Forward: Nastassia Martin set out to create Flavour Forward as a non-alcoholic alternative for people in SkĂ„ne to pair with the regionâs elevated culinary scene. Drawing from tropical ingredients like hibiscus (inspired by her Trinidadian roots), and local favorites like rhubarb, she developed the brand as a healthier, but tasty soda substitute, without having to lean on artificial flavors or colorings to do so. Order it by name at local institutions like SPILL, Lyran, and Hedvigsdal Vedugn & Vin. ]] FRUKTSTEREO: After spending years in the industry, Karl Sjöström and Mikael Nypelius decided to start their own company to spread the word about good produce and experiment with crafting their own line of beverages. In 2016, they began bottling their creations at HĂ€llĂ„kra VingĂ„rd, and have since opened their own place in Malmöâs old harbor area. Today, their celebrated ciders are made using 100 percent fruit and are fermented with natural yeast without any additives.

What to Do in SkÄne
HĂ€llĂ„kra VingĂ„rd: For a rustic retreat, plan a quick trip to HĂ€llĂ„kra Vineyard, located in Southern SkĂ„ne. Here, rolling slopes meet far-stretching plains alongside the Baltic Sea to create a unique microclimate and privileged wine-growing region. Owned by the Hansson family for five generations, the vineyard comprises 6.5 hectares of land and approximately 20,000 vines. Sample a selection of their red, white, sparkling, and sweet wine varietals; try your hand at harvesting grapes out in the field; or enjoy inspired dishes from their innovative kitchen. Absolut Experience Center: For another spirited day-trip idea, hire a rental car and make the trek out to Ă
hus. One of Swedenâs best preserved medieval cities and a beloved vacation destination for well-heeled Swedes, Ă
hus is also where Absolut Vodka is distilled. Absolut Home is a hands-on experience center where visitors can learn about the brandâs storied past and current production practices while also perfecting their bartender skills during an Absolut Cocktail Master Class. ]] Kiviks Musteri: Ăsterlen is also known to locals as the âApple Kingdomâ because of the regionâs numerous apple orchards. Kivik specifically is a quaint fishing village that has evolved over the generations into a holiday paradise, thanks to its pristine beaches and storybook charm. Stop by Kiviks Musteri, a picturesque cidery, where Henric Ă
kesson first planted the apple trees in 1888 that would go on to become Swedenâs first commercial fruit farm. Today, more than 200,000 people visit the orchard to taste their fresh-pressed cider and learn about the regionâs rich past. Malmöhus Castle: Take a trip back in time with a visit to Malmöhus Castle. Originally constructed in 1434 as a citadel, it was rebuilt in the 16th century by King Christian III of Denmark and Norway to be a defensive fortress, and serve as a home for the Governors of Malmöhus County. It now welcomes visitors as a museum, housing a fascinating series of historical exhibitions. Disgusting Food Museum: On the hunt for a museum experience thatâs a little less stuffy? Look no further than Malmöâs Disgusting Food Museum. Itâs exactly what it sounds likeâa permanent collection that pays homage to âdisgustingâ foods from around the world. Delicacies include surströmming (fermented herring from Sweden); hĂĄkarl (aged shark from Iceland); casu marzu (maggot-infested cheese from Sardinia); and durian (the notoriously stinky fruit from Thailand). But itâs not all grossâselections from the United States include Pop Tarts, root beer, and jelly beans. Daring visitors with iron stomachs can even sample a selection of the curiosities (just be sure to keep your barf bag, which doubles as the entrance ticket, close at hand). Read the full article
