Thoughts about Tokyo Mew Mew (2002)!
Tumblr media
Tokyo Mew Mew is my most recent anime watch. I watched it to expand (even more) my magical girl knowledge. It was never dubbed to Latin American Spanish (as far as I know), so there's no element of nostalgia to my feelings about the show. Also, I hadn't developed object permanence in 2002, so I wouldn't have been watching anime anyway. I haven't read the manga or watched the newer version. I watched around two episodes, but I didn't like it enough to continue.
In short, I didn't love Tokyo Mew Mew. Mostly because I am not part of the target audience. The plot, the dialogue, it's all kinda flat and designed to be easy to follow for children. I believe it might be better enjoyed if you are around 11 or 13 years old. Under the cut, you can read some specific thoughts I had about the things I liked or didn't like.
Thanks for reading!
-Let's begin with the stuff I didn't like: the art style. Colors are way too saturated. The chimera anima creature design looks rushed... The proportions of the characters are inconsistent. Sometimes their eyes and hair are huge. I don't think the Mew Mew costumes are ugly, but they aren't pretty either. They are ok. The girls have appealing enough designs. Now, the guys. Damn, aren't they ugly? What do you mean the girls are constantly blushing or having crushes on these guys? None of them have appealing designs. The only one who is nice to look at is Aoyama.
-Again, the plot and themes are quite superficial. There are hints of deeper themes that never get developed. They want Zakuro to be an emotionally intelligent character, but most times she's only pointing out obvious stuff that the rest of the characters are too stupid to get. She had a point when she mentions how they are being forced to be Mew Mews, but she ends up joining the team very easily and the topic is forgotten.
-The guys, again, are so creepy sometimes. I am not even talking about Kishu, he is supposed to be creepy, I know. I'm talking about the blonde guy and the butler guy whose names I didn't care to learn. Especially around the episodes that revolve around Ichigo turning into a cat. What do you mean they are just allowed to say they will 'help her de-transform'? Ugh.
-Now, things I'm neutral about but want to mention: I really thought the blonde guy and the butler guy would be gay for each other. I was expecting a Touya/Yukito dynamic from them. They even had to have an episode making clear the butler is attracted to women. Haha, funny.
-One detail I found satisfying is that the passing of time is consistent. In one episode, they are celebrating Christmas and some episodes later they are celebrating Valentine's Day. Nice.
-The opening and ending songs are cool.
-I didn't love it, but I still liked it better than the newer version.
-Things I liked: Aoyama! The concept behind his character is really cool. It wasn't executed in a particularly good way, but I really appreciate the ideas behind it. His design is so generic and inofensive that you think there is no way he'll be relevant to the fight later on. They even foreshadow Deep Blue a bit when Aoyama expresses his slightly eco-fascistic views on humanity. I like that he admired Ichigo the same way Ichigo admired him from afar. His monologue about being bored and tired of pretending to be a perfect kid to avoid disappointing the people around him… unexpectedly relatable and sad to be in this show.
-Also, Ichigo and Aoyama's relationship is very wholesome. No drama, no misunderstandings, no secrets kept for long to create cheap drama. It felt refreshing to watch a romance between two kids just trying their best to be good to one another, and creating conflict for them in other ways. Very nice.
-Zakuro is the coolest Mew Mew, Mint is my favorite, but Pudding is the best. Sorry Lettuce, I kind of don't care about you.
-Mint is my favorite because she is a mean, spoiled, rich girl who learns to accept that she wants friends, to be loved, and to fight alongside others. And my brain just automatically roots for those kinds of characters. Mint even gets to telenovela-slap the main character to remind her of what is important. I have to accept it… that's cinema… Also, she's a lesbian.
-Pudding is the best character. That episode where she's sick, and it's revealed she provides for and takes care of her siblings all on her own… It's probably one of the best episodes of the whole show. It reframes how we met her as a street performer asking Ichigo for money. Ah, and she cries while asking the nearest adult if she can call her mom for a moment… Again, unexpectedly mature coming from this show.
And... I think that's all! Thanks for reading if you made it this far ^^

Ayooo, V is one of the coolest, most awesome characters on this hellsite, and one of my favorite men I've ever had the pleasure of seeing in BG3 art
I know you already don't let this get you down, but just know that V is my mew mew too and I accept no shit on his or your behalf!!!
As someone struggling with gender identity, V is one hell of an example of why I shouldn't be ashamed of my body, whether I decide to discover and accept my gender identity, whatever that may be. (I proceeded to talk myself out of being trans ftm on account that I'd be a short ass, wide-hip-ed guy, but now... Well, I'll tune in with the update in a couple years, if anyone will remember by then)
In summary, thx for creating the murder baby V for all of us genderqueer babies to enjoy
thank you! he means a lot to me as well <3

HAIII ME AGAINNN
Just wanted to pass by and ask: Where are Mewmew's kits now ? They musta grown quite a bit since that photo, so I'm kinda curious myself :33 How's their relationship with m too ? Is it good ? Do they know Bout Evie in the house ?
Hiiiii you can read more on tha kittens here and here :3
Tumblr media
Here's also some art I done of them!
[Two slight updates on the kittens' (adult) names but Goop is now Goog, and Turbotuho goes by just Turbo! Other than that there's not too much new.]
•Googy (Mew Jr.), as mentioned somewhere in the fuzzy past, is a housecat for good. Yes, they're on the same level mentally as Mewmew and everyone else, and also has the option to choose to develop some kind of alternative mecha mode. But they completely choose not to, and so remain in cat mode indefinitely. Mew Jr. Is fully content to live as a normal pet cat until the end of time (or until their.. Humans pass away from old age..) Junior is a laidback personality who envied normal cats in their kittenhood and thus made the decision to become one as much as possible. Cannot be convinced to adopt some alt form and is rarely in contact with their siblings. However Turbo misses them sometimes, and Goog has the ability to use a phone (opposable thumbs you see), so they call sometimes. Mewmew is completely accepting of this lifestyle choice, if not very distant to Mew Jr...
•Captain Tiramisu and Turbo are living a space opera/cheesy scifi drama somewhere in the far off cosmos, and they're very close! They're each other's emotional support, even if they're perpetually bickering. Similarly to Mew Jr., they both chose the kind of external mode that they personally found the absolute coolest, and live in robot mode almost exclusively. Turbo is more keen to kitty around every so often tho, for comfort reasons. Turbo is the sweet optimist of the two, and loves breaking stuff. An absolute biting fiend as a cat. Love language is biting (Cap'n Tiramisu also bites but not lovingly).
There's no nicer way to say this but Tiramisu is an egotistical, petty brat. While Turbo is more of a follower personality, they do also blatantly and stubbornly make their own choices and turns along the way. Many people often wonder how these two can stand each other, but Turbo often comforts Tiramisu when things don't go their way and occasionally enables their bombastic revenge plots, and Tiramisu will violently explode you if you're mean to their baby sibling. Turbo likes to test Captain's patience (making them a better person by pettily not leaving them any other choice sometimes), and Captain "Mom friend anxiety hack"s* their way to helping Turbo take care of, or stand up for themself more. *(aka. Oh no I'm too nervous to do this thing. Oh, you're also too nervous to do this thing? I'll fucking do it double for you then!!!)
Both are neurodivergent so they also assist each other in whatever the other can't do. Despite having many petty and childish traits to them, these two make it work.
•Relationship with Mewmew can be summed up with:
Captain Tiramisu - Geez mom/dad, you're embarrassing meeeeee.... Ugh... Fine. I love you.. Yeah yeah I'll send you a post card from the milkyway association's holiday hotel.. Yeah of course I won't get into trouble (gets into trouble as soon as they depart)
Turbo - Oh weee yuppeee It's mom/dad ^~^ so here's everything I've been up to since we last saw (talks for three hours), sorry I didn't call you I forgot, wow you're so cool I love you, and Tiramisu and Mew Jr. Love you too. Okay bye, I wanna go do something now! I'll call you (forgets to call.)
Admittedly they've gotten distant with adulthood.
•To address the.. Evie in the room, I will just say that none of the kittens know of Mewmews life during the galactic alliance, they only know Mewmew "did something in the military but quit to pursue a peaceful life". The kits were born after quitting. They do know of Evilicus, as that scary dark lord that was defeated long ago, and they actually do community service sometimes for planets that Evie's reign has left scarred and ravaged. They however definitely haven't been in touch with Mewmew recently enough to know Evie is roommates now lolol
Thank you for the ask!!! ^w^

Some more reviews from John Waters's yearly favorites:
Love Lies Bleeding
This hilarious, bloody film noir is the best movie of the year, one that Russ Meyer might have made if he had been a lesbian intellectual addicted to steroids. Even the pig-men are cute. Sort of.
Climax
The best movie of the year gives new meaning to the term “bad trip.” Frenzied dance numbers combined with LSD, mental breakdowns, and childhood trauma turn this nutcase drama into The Red Shoes meets Hallucination Generation. Freak out, baby, freak out!
Tom of Finland
This dirty but dignified, oddly commercial biopic of the artist who inspired the modern-day s/m gay leather scene is now the Finnish government’s official entry in the 2017 foreign-film Oscar race. That’s what I call patriotic penis progress, and I hope it wins.
Cinderella (2015)
Yes, you heard me, Cinderella. I fucking love this Disney film.
Carol
Maybe the only way to be transgressive these days is to be shockingly tasteful. This Lana Turner–meets–Audrey Hepburn lipstick-lesbian melodrama is so old-fashioned I felt like I was one year old after watching it. That’s almost reborn.
Justin Bieber: Never Say Never
I’m not kidding. A well-made doc that proves the Bieb was a child prodigy. Wait until you see Justin stick his head into the audience and shake his hair in 3D. I screamed.
Bruno
Don’t listen to the critics—it’s better than Borat. Imagine a hetero teen couple in a mall on a first date somewhere in Middle America watching Sacha Baron Cohen pantomime every known gay male sex act, ending in a joyous “facial.” Sometimes audiences get what they deserve.
Grindhouse
The coolest high-concept art film of the year. A faux-exploitation double feature from hell with coming attractions in between for films you’d kill to see if they were real. I could feel the ghost rats from Baltimore theaters past brushing up against my legs as I watched.
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
GLAAD was wrong on this one. Jason Mewes can tell me a blowjob joke any day of the week.
O Brother Where Art Thou
The jaw-dropping all-singing, all-dancing Ku Klux Klan/Busby Berkeley number is a real beaut.
I will admit, John Waters's review of Joker II has me a little intrigued...
Finally, a love story I can relate to. So insane, so well thought out, so well directed, so much smoking! It’s Jailhouse Rock meets Busby Berkeley with a 9/11 That’s Entertainment! ending that will make you shake your head in cinematic astonishment. Stupid critics. Gaga so good. Joker so right. Die, dumbbells, die!

Hi there folks!! There's a little piece of art I finished yesterday night, but it was late at night so I couldn't post it before. It's been a good while I wanted to this one and th first one I was doing was going to be digital, but last year's December my computer died, and I lost that digital sketch. So I made one in ol' traditional drawing.
It's a giftart for one of the sweetest person and coolest artist I've been had the pleasure to meet! And who I've had the great joy to have meet and to be friends with. The one and only purple mew!
Thanks so much @tikara for all the wonderful support, comfort and love you've given me since I first met you! Specially last year when I was feeling down and worried due the situation with the Covid. And for being such a great inspiration for me all the time but specially at that time, when I almost lost faith in my art skills.
I'll always treasure it in my heart, forever!

For the ship meme. Ladybird and ScarDenki?
You know me so well Brunette~
Ladybird
which one tags the other in pictures of cute animals
Marinette. Minto doesn’t actually have much of a social media presence, she has a tik tok that she uses regularly, and she has a pintrest to make boards, but she only ever got an Insta at Marinette’s behest, and now she’s assaulted with cute animal pictures on the daily. Any birds with the accompanying caption ‘is this u’ She half heartedly complains that it’s just another notification to dismiss on her phone but she actually really loves it since it means Marinette’s thinking about her.
which one injures themself while trying to impress the other
Both. Marinette has gotten so many needle wounds from making the COOLEST POSSIBLE gifts for Minto for Birthdays and Christmas (and White Day once the dichtomy between Valentines and White Day was told to her) But Minto’s totally gotten herself bruised up more than usual during ballet practice because Marinette was sitting in and she wanted to show off.
which one carries the other on their shoulders when they get too tired to walk
Both again. Marinette tends to offer to pick Minto up most, and Minto’s 100% here to get princess carried by Paris’ Guardian Angel. But When Marinette’s over extended herself (again) and is honestly dead on her feet, Minto won’t even ask for permission, just lift Marinette, and tow her wherever they were going like a sack of flour.
which one puts pizza rolls in the shopping cart when the other isn’t looking
Marinette. Sometimes she just needs a quick and easy snack for late nights and Minto also makes that hilarious ‘disgust.jpg’ face when she sees those little greaseballs in the shopping cart. Minto can’t stand canned foods or greasy foods, so pizza rolls are probably super gross to her too. Look, she’s a bit of a snob, something she’s willing to adress about herself, but ‘willing to step out of her comfort zone’ is different from ‘letting PIZZA ROLLS into her house’
which one sends the other useless fun facts at 3 am
Minto. Especially when one of them is on patrol that night. Either infodumping about Ballet while sitting on the Eiffel tower to keep herself awake, or sending a history of musical theatre in an extended thread to Marinette so she has something to wind down reading after she wraps up for the night.
which one feeds stray animals
Birds are inherently attracted to Minto for being a bird herself, so it tends to be her. Marinette tends to feed stray dogs and cats, but she doesn’t see them as often as Minto sees birds, so she kind of just keeps a bit of sunflower seed on herself at all times to throw a handful for the wrens and sparrows that come her way. Thankfully the pigeons of Paris already have a master so they stay away from her. It was an interesting day when a hawk landed on the balcony of their apartment, and Minto very calmly dug a dead mouse out of the freezer that Marinette didn’t even know they HAD, fed the creature, and sent it on its way.
which one sleeps in really weird positions
Marinette, she has a tendancy to sleep how she drops, leading to a lot of limbs spread out in awkward ways, or half sitting up, or half on top of Minto. By the middle of the night she’s generally shifted to her base position:cuddle bug (heh) so things are usually FINE by morning, but Minto’s had to learn to fall alseep in wierd situations.
which one opens all the jars/bottles
Marinette, one of the downsides of being part bird means Minto’s grip strength has been weakened a bit, so Marinette ends up putting those Ladybug muscles to good use.
which one spontaneously bursts into song for no reason
Both, Minto has a reason most days though, she’s turning over some sort of routine in her head and is having problems keeping rhythm quietly, so she starts to sing the meldody of the peice to get things in order. While Marinette will start humming little diddies about what she’s doing at the moment. They both find the other doing this absolutely adorable and when it happens at the same time Marinette tends to harmonize with Minto without fully realizing it.
which one buys the other really weird birthday cards
Everyone. It was actually an in-joke amongst the Mew mews, to get eachother wildly inaccurate cards played entirely straight ‘get well soon’ cards on christmas and that jazz. And initially she ignored this with Marinette and got things straightforward, but when things got serious and she had to aknowlege that her friends will end up keeping up the tradition, decided to do it herself to get Marinette used to it. Marinette thankfully, thought it was endearing, and before Minto could blink, all of Team Miraculous had adopted it too.
Scardenki
which one tags the other in pictures of cute animals
Denki. It’s a rare day when Scarlet tags him in anything, but it’s usually cool art peices. Denki however just sends Scarlet anything that he looks at and thinks ‘Bae would like this’ and sure she could huff and puff about it, but like honestly she does like it and he knows her better than anyone would expect him to.
which one injures themself while trying to impress the other
Also Denki. He’s a fucking moron and we love him. Scarlet loves him. And though she wouldn’t admit to it at gunpoint she MAAAYYYBBBEEEE shows off a little while practicing with her sword. She never hurts herself though.
which one carries the other on their shoulders when they get too tired to walk
Both. Scarlet’s the more ‘dominant’ of the two by personality type, but Denki only ever accepts to be carried when he’s actually Super dead from hero-ing or straight up gone Doofus Mode and it’s probably not safe to let him walk all the way home by himself. But there are definitely days where Scarlet was up all night Angel-ing and is actually super not up to the date they were gonna go on, but won’t say that directly, and he straight up just princess carries her the rest of the way.
which one puts pizza rolls in the shopping cart when the other isn’t looking
Surprisingly Scarlet. Denki is actually pretty good at the whole ‘being healthy’ thing, but Scarlet misses her hometown back in the States sometimes, and part of that was a snack her nanny would sneak her when her family wasn’t home. They’re HOMESICK pizza rolls Denki!
which one sends the other useless fun facts at 3 am
Denki. Late nights on patrol, or waiting for Scarlet to come home from her Late night patrol kinda freaks him out, so trawling a ‘did you know’ site and sending her a million things helps him focus and keeps him from worrying, this ADHD icon.
which one feeds stray animals
Scarlet. She might be a hardass, but she is a Love Angel at the end of the day, and that does mean sometimes her heart really does just go out to the strays of the world. Denki loves small animals too, but his Static aura makes them tend to hate him. it’s a struggle.
which one sleeps in really weird positions
Scarlet. She’s curled up like a fucking canon ball. Denki wouldn’t be able to cuddle with her if he tried. She’s just a ball of trauma and paranoia and that leads to her being an extremely light sleeper, Denki tries his best though and tends to sleep with his back pressed against hers. Enough contact to calm himself and detached enough to keep scarlet calm.
which one opens all the jars/bottles
Scarlet also, but she takes the piss out of Denki about it. ‘ooohhhh Big scary pro hero chargebolt can’t even open a fucking jelly jar’ Scarlet has a wry sense of humor and this is one of the fields she specializes in.
which one spontaneously bursts into song for no reason
Denki. His world is a threatre, their home is a stage. He tends to sing along to songs without realizing they were playing in his head and not on the radio. It helps him think.
which one buys the other really weird birthday cards
Scarlet. She knows her Boyf’s sense of humor, and has a tendency to tailor cards specifically to those senses. it’s more effort than people would expect out of her, and that’s exactly why she does it. She knows she’s not the best person or the best partner so she goes all out with the stuff she knows she can do.

Bird Banfe: The Frederator Interview
Tumblr media
You might be surprised, talking to people in the animation industry, at how rare it is to encounter a still-kicking passion for cartoons. Bird Banfe is, to borrow Drake’s term, a real one. A recent SCAD Grad with mad Storyboarding skills, a deep investment in Scooby Doo and a penchant for pink, Bird's enthusiasm for her craft emanates from her, an enlightened power not unlike those of the magical girls she grew up idolizing. Hearing Costume Quest’s Production Coordinator speak with conviction, knowledge and love for the shows that shaped her, and those she now helps shape, it’s abundantly clear that her passion is an unstoppable force, and when it comes to Bird’s dreams, my sense is that it’s never been a question of ‘whether’—simply one of ‘when’.
How did you break into the animation industry?
I got the chance to intern at Nickelodeon during my last year at SCAD, on Spongebob. Totally by accident!
Cool! How does one “accidentally” become a Nicktern?
The Dean of our school was PO’d because Nick representatives were visiting campus, but it was finals and nobody knew, so people weren’t showing up. My friend who worked in the animation building called me up and was like, “Hey, there are Nick people here doing general interviews. Come do one!”
So you bailed on whatever you were doing and went?
Yeah! I had like 30 minutes to throw on an outfit, a little makeup. I thought it went awful. Which is how you can expect an interview to go, with no preparation and barely any clue what it’s for. I didn’t hear anything for a couple months, so I figured, eh, good learning experience. Then on the last day of school, I got a call at like 9pm from an unknown number, and didn’t pick up. They left a voicemail - and it was my interviewer! She said she had something to tell me. I was like, “What?! It’s been two months! This could still be a thing?!”
And on the last day of school!
The last day of school - period. I was driving home to New Jersey the next day. No job lined up, flipping out. We got in touch, I waited a bit more, then I got a call from the Spongebob team. From a Skype interview with them, I got the job.
What were your responsibilities on Spongebob?
The same as a PA. Handling files for artists, organizing things, picking up tasks to help the production along. On Spongebob specifically, I did a lot of archiving backgrounds. The show has these beautiful, physical painted backgrounds. Handling those was probably the coolest part of the job. It got really weird sometimes. It’d be like, “Here is the interior of Patrick’s mouth and it’s really gross.” And I’d have to search around to label it, because they go into Patrick’s mouth in like 3 different episodes.
Wow, so you became the in-house expert on Patrick Star mouth shots.
It was a lot of fun! I learned a lot about how animation works. In art school, they don't teach you anything about production. I didn't know what to expect, or really what was expected of me! I'm good at organizing, I know Photoshop, and I work really hard. Those things carried me through the internship.
Backing way up - when did you know you wanted to work in animation?
A lot later than most people would say. I wasn’t drawing on the walls when I was two. I was drawing! But about as much as any kid would. I wanted to be a Veterinarian for most of my life. In sophomore year of high school though, I realized I have a lot of story ideas, and original characters - all the stuff that kids who really like anime would have. And I knew I’d go insane if I didn’t have a creative job. That decided it for me. Not, “I really want to do this!” more, “I can’t imagine a world where I’m satisfied with a different career”.
Tumblr media
So as a junior and senior, you geared yourself toward animation?
Yeah - my Uncle was working in visual effects, mainly for superhero movies, so I knew someone ‘who does that’. I knew it was an option, not an intangible dream. I was in art classes throughout high school, because they were fun. But then I started going to an art studio after school to take animation, painting, and life drawing classes - the last of which was a big shock to me.
Oh, wow - you did all the right things!
When you know people who do it, they’ll tell you! “Go take your life drawing classes—there are no other kids in high school drawing naked people, you’ve gotta do it”. I got advice from a lot of people and followed it the best I could. I applied to a bunch of art schools for animation, though none in California. Not even CalArts - wasn’t even a blip on the radar (off my surprise) It was too far for my family! We picked Savannah, and I’m really glad. I had a great time at SCAD.
What did you like best about animation at SCAD?
It was a good fit for my personality. I was very much the go-getter in college - you know, a try-hard. And the school has a ton of great resources if you want to put in the work. SCAD is set up in a way where if you take advantage of everything that’s there, and are willing to work, you'll prosper.
Going into animation, did you have a focus in mind?
I knew from my animation classes in high school on that I wanted to storyboard. I figured that out quickly, mostly because my teacher steered me toward it. He was like, “You’re good at this. You need to keep doing it.” I was like “Okay, will do.” (laughs) I think every role in animation is interesting, and I’m not too picky. I’m sorta glad somebody made that decision for me!
Are you now looking for avenues into storyboarding from production?
Definitely, but I’ve loved my time in production. I can’t see myself doing it forever, but, remember I said I was a big go-getter in college? I pushed myself really hard. I don’t want to say I burned out, but... I wanted time for myself. To learn how to be an adult, do things like cook for myself. Working in production has given me time to breathe and figure out what I value in the industry.
Tumblr media
For example - I was accustomed to that air of, “Oh, you want to be on a show with clout, a show that people know”. I realized on Spongebob how little that really means. Tell anybody in the industry you’re on Spongebob and they’ll go, “That’s cool” and maybe mention their friend on the show. It wasn’t ‘celebrity status’, you know? Maybe to my Grandma, but not to people here. I’ve come to see it’s much more important to find a team that really works with you, and Costume Quest was that team for me.
Did being part of a great team help you shelve the art anxieties?
Oh yeah. When I first started in production, part of me was like, “You need to get into art, now. You need to be doing this, this, and THIS you should have done yesterday!” Tons of pressure. But on Costume Quest, I realized, “These are really great people. I like being around them, I like coming to work every day. I don't want to leave.” So I decided I'd do everything I could with this show and this team. And that’s been very fulfilling. Not in a way that I expected—but in a way where I’ve learned about what I need in a workplace.
What’s your Big Goal in animation, if you have one now?
I always feel embarrassed saying this, because I'm just starting out. But I have lofty goals of being a Creator. I just want to make something that’s important to young girls growing up. Thinking about the things that were important to me as a little girl, I want to foster that.
What kinds of Things?
Magical girl shows (laughs). Sailor Moon, Tokyo Mew Mew, Cardcaptor Sakura. The very ridiculous, very pink, frilly stories, where the message is usually “Love is the most powerful thing in the universe”. But I think those stories are really important! Empathy is important to teach people, and cartoons do that, today more so than ever. Plus, kindness is actually what kids want: when we tested our show, we got feedback that the kids didn’t like it when our characters were mean. When I was growing up, there weren’t as many US shows that talked about interpersonal dynamics, or hit on the empathy theme: “people are different from you, that’s why they behave differently.” That’s probably why anime was so fundamental to me then. Spongebob wasn’t talking about things that felt important to me at that age, but Naruto was. I’ve always been attracted to stories about people learning what it means to grow up and make the world a better place, and where the characters are fun to watch doing that. Costume Quest definitely is that, to me. I just really like all the characters.
Tumblr media
Who are your favorite of the characters? Which ones do you identify with?
I definitely identify with Wren the most—which is not something I should admit to. Very much the stubborn, rough-and-tumble personality. I look at her and go, “Yup, that’s me as a kid.” My favorite character is Rudy, which is really weird. It’s that crazy YouTube-popstar personality - the one associated with “YouTube celebrity” which I just find hilarious. And I love Reynold. I like the dynamic between him and Wren the best.
Do you have a favorite episode of Costume Quest?
My favorites are always the Reynold ones, because they have so much heart. You really feel for the kid. He goes through a lot, and he cares a lot; there’s just no way you can’t. I’ll say “Scout’s Honor”. Of all the episodes we’ve done, that’s probably the one that puts a smile on my face the most. The board artists and writers packed a lot of funny stuff in there, and I love singing along with it.
What have you liked best about working on Costume Quest?
The people, first of all. And it’s just a good show. I live for those moments where I can watch something then go to my friend later and be like, “Remember that part?” and crack up about it. Costume Quest is a lot of that for me.
Anything you’d like future fans of the show to know?
Keep an eye out for a little clown doll. We got a haunted doll last summer, off eBay. His name is Little Richie and he moves around the office. It's so funny. It was actually Julian (interviewed here!) who decided to start hiding him in some of the backgrounds. So he’s now a fun little Easter egg - or a continuity error,  depending on the sense of humor of whoever you ask. It’s been so fun having him crop up all over the office. In the freezer, behind a plant. Suspended from the ceiling.
What are your favorite cartoons?
I love love love loved Scooby Doo as a kid. I still do. I love those ridiculous straight-to-video WWE crossovers. They are my guilty pleasure in every sense of the word. So bonkers. There’s John Cena standing next to Daphne. It's great. I was Scooby for Halloween for 5 years. I was obsessed, but not for any reason that I can parse today as an adult. I think I just like dogs. I really liked Chowder. That show, especially that style, stood out to me when I was deciding to pursue animation. Same with Flapjack, a similar vein of style and humor. And with both, it’s these lead characters who are just sweet kids, nothing but nice. Courage the Cowardly Dog I loved, even though I was the most easily scared kid in the world. You might think, “Oh, Scooby-Doo, Courage the Cowardly Dog, you must like scary things.” Not at all. I was deeply afraid. I just loved dogs that much. PowerPuff Girls was huge for me. These days, I have to keep up with every episode drop of Steven Universe or risk getting it spoiled. Star Versus and OK KO! are great too, and Ducktales I really enjoy putting on.
What are you working on now? Do you feel pretty motivated to go do your personal work after the work-day?
My portfolio. And it’s hard. It’s really hard. It took time, but I’ve come to terms with that. You can’t burn yourself out. You have to put body first and figure out the balance you need in life, in order to be happy. I’m also the type that works a lot better in an office setting. So I’m prone to coming into the office at a weird time, if I actually want to get something done. At home, I never get anything done. Unless it’s Sunday. Sunday is my work day. Saturday’s my sleep day.
Bird is now Production Coordinator on Final Space. Follow her on Twitter. Costume Quest will premiere in 2019 on Amazon Prime Video - keep an eye out!
Thank you for the interview Bird! And for helping make Costume Quest the extraordinary show that it is <3

Interview with Christian Mendonça
On September 26, 2019, ZweiundVierzig (42) was born: the must-listen-to playlist for music from the German-speaking world! In monthly editions, Deutsches Haus at NYU will be curating ZweiundVierzig (42), a playlist that brings contemporary German music and Deutsches Haus staff favorites to the American audience. The playlist consists of a sampling of carefully selected R&B/Hip Hop/Rap/Trap/Rock/Electronic/Experimental/Techno/Classical songs.
Right on schedule for October’s release of ZweiundVierzig (42), it is time to speak to Christian Mendonça, the mastermind behind the playlist, and jack of all trades at Deutsches Haus at NYU, about the work that goes into curating ZweiundVierzig (42).
If you have not done so yet, go ahead and listen to what's up-and-coming across the Atlantic this month and check out the new ZweiundVierzig (42) on Spotify❗️
A quick teaser: We’re working on a musical selection for our young listeners as well ;)
Tumblr media
How did the idea for “ZweiundVierzig” come about? Could you please provide us with insights into its origin?
As with most of my interests, I’d say that there are multiple origins to this project. I studied abroad in Berlin, and met a lot of people who were researching minority cultures there. I was myself really interested in the urban landscape and culture of the city, especially in comparison to American cities. To some degree, I’d say that experience abroad was the original seed. I’d also say that exploring the trend of artists politicizing their music in the Americas to push previously conceived notions of urban and minority youths since that time, has also been essential to this origin story.  Trends can be observed in the States as well as in Latin America, where once can hear from a great queer and trans music community in Brazil, a rising one in Costa Rica, and the queering of machismo norms in Puerto Rico to name just a few. These interests, combined with my coming back to Deutsches Haus (I was a student worker/program assistant as an undergrad here) to work as an administrative aide, are the reasons this project came to life.
Could you expand on the playlist name?
ZweiundVierzig was an easy pick. It means 42 in German. Some people will say it’s the numeric answer to everything. I don’t know if I believe that, but I do believe that Deutsches Haus has provided a few answers for me. 42 is our address on the Mews. Come visit! Let’s talk music!
The stylization on the other hand, came about after toying with the words a bit. Personally, I felt like it looked best/coolest this way.
There will be a new curated playlist each month. Where do you draw your inspiration for the song selections from? Do you get suggestions from the Deutsches Haus at NYU community?
Spotify provides some great song suggestions once you start toying with their playlists. I think there is an algorithm that begins curating music suggestions for you based on the artists you listen to. It’s a great way to start exploring music in different languages. Another reason I came up with this is because I thought it would be a great tool for our language students! Even if they listen to a 2-3 minute song in German per day, that’s some exposure/contact time! Aside from Spotify, there are also a ton of music magazines and sites for German audiences (such as Kaltblut or Riddim). While I was in Berlin, I couldn’t believe magazine culture (both online and physical). I’m ashamed to say, but I thought it was a dying art. I’ve been more aware of it now in the States as well, and am even a subscriber to some. Lots of music tips and revelations are drawn from them as well.
Does the playlist focus on a certain music genre? If yes, why? Will there be any themed playlists?
Playlists might explore sounds and juxtapose today’s music with some older tunes, to see how music has changed (and/or not changed) over time. I’m hoping to have playlists with solely Austrian artists and solely Swiss artists at some point. The Holidays are coming up. I think we have something in the works for that too :)
Who are some artists you’ve discovered lately?
Again, I’m very interested in minority cultural contributions and productions as possible tools of both assimilation and resistance (via the creation and navigation of transcultural spaces). Germany, as most of urban Europe, is much more diverse than most people imagine. We get artists like OG Keemo, of Sudanese origin; Ufo361, who is Turkish and truly glorious in his trap/rap game; JuJu, with Moroccan roots calling everyone out because she knows she’s a powerhouse; Nura, who is Eritrean and Saudi, but born in Kuwait, and holds Eritrean citizenship (politics are complex); etc. They all draw upon/from the German language (and more) and help shape/mold it to hone and assert identity as well as experience. It’s quite powerful, and often times probably not even the intention, which almost makes it even cooler.
And of course, there’s the non-poc artists going out of their way to push and stretch the previously conceived boundaries of their language and its sound: Marteria, who through his other artistic project, Marsimoto literally manipulates his voice to speak to experiences and feelings not inhabited by Marteria; Fatoni; Die Orsons; AnnenMayKantereit; just to name a few.
How has the feedback been so far regarding the first two releases of “ZweiundVierzig”?
We just released the second playlist yesterday. :)
There’s been a lot of words of encouragement to pursue this project from both staff and students!
The most exciting question of course, what can we expect from future releases of “ZweiundVierzig”?
Look forward to some Rock and Electronic; to some Reggae/Dancehall; tons of rap/trap; and of course, techno.

So, you love cocktails but after several failed attempts at mixing your own (“Why does everything end up tasting of cough sweets?!?”) you decide it’s time to get out and find some true master mixers, true cocktail artists. To save you facing yet another disappointing glass, GoHen has tracked down the very best and unearthed London’s 23 coolest cocktail bars. Cheers!
London’s Coolest Cocktail Bars
Ballie Ballerson
With over 5,000 square feet of party space, this place is huge. And it needs to be. Certainly not your average cocktail bar, the big giveaway is the fact that it’s a giant ball pool. Yes, you did read that right. While we are huge kids at heart, what really makes this such a standout venue are the retro sweet cocktails that are like nothing else you’ve ever tasted.
Top Tipple: Hit Me Baby One More Time
Where: Hackney
Website | Facebook | Instagram
Barrio
With a distinctly Latin American feel, Barrio has a range of venues that will slap you across the face with their amazing colours and flavours. Imagine a Mexican wrestler in a glass, fighting a piñata that’s full of rainbows… It’s like that, but more colourful and even tastier. The food is amazing but it’s the cocktails you’ll keep going back for.
Top Tipple: Malibu Stacey
Where: Angel, Brixton, Shoreditch, Soho
Website | Facebook | Instagram
Blind Pig Bar (Social Eating House)
On arrival, you’ll find the Michelin star Social Eating House but tucked out of site just above is the Blind Pig, almost like an old-fashioned speakeasy. Inside the mixologists take much pride, love and care over their drinks. With a smooth wooded interior, mixing reclaimed furniture with feelgood flavours, these are cocktails with class.
Top Tipple: Cucumber Fizz
Where: Soho
Website | Facebook | Instagram
Burlock
It’s all about the rum baby! This fantastic bar is here to celebrate and help convert the masses to this massively underrated drink. Forget London, inside the Burlock it’s been replaced by the Caribbean as you’re transported to the sunshine islands. One of our favourite bars on the planet, if you only drink one rum infused, Caribbean cocktail this lunchtime, do it at the Burlock.
Top Tipple: Nuclear Banana Colada
Where: Marylebone
Website | Facebook | Instagram
BYOC
There’s something genius about BYOC. The concept is one we all know, bring your own bottle with you, the clever stuff starts when you hand it to the barmen and they use it to start mixing you cocktails using your booze. The venue embodies the spirit of a 1920’s speakeasy. It’s almost like Fat Sam and Blousy Brown could walk in at any second!
Top Tipple: It could be anything!
Where: Camden, City
Website | Facebook | Instagram
Callooh Callay
With more awards than we’ve had mojitos (that’s a lot!), Callooh Callay is one of the most celebrated cocktail bars in the whole of the UK and really is at the forefront of all things cocktail. We don’t mean they are close on trends, these guys are making the trends, bringing new incredible flavours, constantly trying the new, so you can keep going back.
Top Tipple: The Crowd Pleaser
Where: Shoreditch
Website | Facebook | Instagram
Cocktail Trading Co
We can’t tell you just how much we love this place. They’ve taken the very best of the boozers your grandad loved (even the carpets) and somehow made it all look cool, from the beer tankards to the bar stools. But it’s the cocktails that really are that bit special and have won them numerous awards as well as our undying love.
Top Tipple: River Cottage Cosmo
Where: Brick Lane
Website | Facebook | Instagram
Coin Laundry
Effortlessly uber cool, this is almost one of those places you’re scared of getting things wrong, not quite fitting in. But the staff really do ‘keep it real’ and keep things friendly. Whether you’re playing scrabble in the basement, enjoying a bottomless brunch, marvelling at the achingly awesome décor (how do they find all that furniture?!?) or ordering a cocktail.
Top Tipple: Pucker Up
Where: Farringdon
Website | Facebook | Instagram
Disrepute
Not that we would normally frequent a house of disrepute, but we just find ourselves drawn to this amazing venue. Repeatedly. The interior feels like a 1920’s cruise liner: rich, luxurious, a little bit kitsch, but utterly fabulous. But it’s not the looks, this is a venue obsessed with the art of cocktails and the pursuit of that one true perfect glass.
Top Tipple: Fellilni
Where: Soho
Website | Facebook | Instagram
FAM
Part friendly neighbourhood hangout, part 1970’s cop movie, there’s a wall of vinyl so you can select your own soundtrack to the evening. There’s nothing hugely clever, nothing trying too hard, they’ve taken the very basics of everything you want to relax with (great company, good food, amazing flavours, top tunes and chilled drinks) and made it welcoming.
Top Tipple: Sticky Fingers Sour
Where: Marylebone
Website | Facebook | Instagram
Fitz Bar
With a little bit of theatre and an air of the Bloomsbury Set, this is exactly the venue to get philosophical and be dazzled. With a team handpicked from some of the finest cocktail bars across the capital, Fitz’s have gone in search of excellence and are taking cocktails to the next level. And we are most happy to join them.
Top Tipple: Silvertown
Where: Russell Square
Website | Facebook | Instagram
Laki Kane
If you’re feeling a need to get tropical then Laki Kane is the place. London’s very own tiki bar, this is a drinking experience like no other. The amazing interior, live music, cool kids and more rum than a Jamaican tea party, it’s such a fine and lively place to hang. Food and cocktails delivered to your table; no wonder Laki Kane are the Lux Restaurant Awards Cocktail Bar of the Year 2019.
Top Tipple: Rita Hayworth
Where: Angel Islington
Website | Facebook | Instagram
Mayor Of Scaredy Cat Town
Go for a drink? We want to move in! This is just one of the coolest bars ever. The mayor rules all, in fact, if he doesn’t like you, you’re not getting in, via the secret fridge door entrance (we’re not kidding). Cool, quirky, fun, just a little bit magical (and slightly bonkers) it’s everything you’ve ever wanted in a secret venue. With drinks to die for!
Top Tipple: Loretto Swizzle
Where: Liverpool St
Website | Facebook
Megaro Bar
Shhh, don’t tell anyone, but under the Megaro Bar the prohibition busters are busy at it, providing great music, good flavours and delicious liquor to those willing to cross the line and not look back. Mixologists do their thing using the finest of ingredient as you would expect of the Megaro Hotel. Like a team of drink historians, they bring classic cocktails back to life.
Top Tipple: Singapore Sling
Where: King’s Cross
Website | Facebook | Instagram
Mews
Decadent, sophisticated, with dark oak interiors and rich blue leather, Mews live up to everything you could want from a cocktail bar in the heart of London’s Mayfair. This certainly isn’t the cheapest of cocktails bars but that’s kind of the point. An A-lister of bars, it has the ability to remind you that, yes, you are a little bit special.
Top Tipple: Burnt Orchard
Where: Mayfair
Website | Facebook | Instagram
Milk & Honey
One of the most famous names on the London cocktail scene, in fact, one of the most famous names in cocktails period (as they say in their sister bar in New York), Milk & Honey are the standard that many other bars are measured against. If you’re a true cocktail connoisseur or just want to really explore the world of cocktails, then this venue has to be on your hitlist.
Top Tipple: London Calling
Where: Soho
Website | Facebook
Mr Fogg’s
Mr Fogg’s venues have an ability to take you through time and space. With a Victoriana/steampunk feel, they are a salute to the adventurer in every one of us. You can rest awhile, share stories, taste great food and amazing flavours. Mixing exotic tastes from around the world with the very best of London town.
Top Tipple: Till We Meet Again
Where: Covent Garden, Fitzrovia, Liverpool St, Mayfair
Website | Facebook | Instagram
Nola
Nola brings the flair, flavours and music of New Orleans to London. The interior also nods to the birthplace of the blues, Bourbon Street, with the feel of The Big Easy. The food is a blend of impeccable French cuisine and creole cooking. Nola has a wonderfully understated elegance and charm. They also have an incredible cocktail menu.
Top Tipple: Creole Muse
Where: Bethnal Green
Website | Facebook | Instagram
Simmons
If you want a bar that just makes you smile, this is it! But the really good thing is there’s a whole heap of them! Simmons are springing up all over London and in our opinion the city will be a happier place for it. Every home should have one. “Cocktail, Dreams & Disco” and what more do you really need in life. They even serve Bottomless Afternoon Tea!
Top Tipple: Love Island Iced tea
Where: Angel, Camden, King’s Cross, Soho, Temple, Tower Bridge,
Website | Facebook | Instagram
The Bletchley
More than just a night out, at The Bletchley you step back in time to the 1940s in this totally immersive experience. Brilliant fun, dressed in authentic clothing from the era, you must crack the codes to reveal the ingredients to your unique personalised drinks. Using codebreaking machines, no two cocktails are ever the same.
Top Tipple: tbd
Where: Chelsea
Website | Facebook | Instagram
Tonight Josephine
One of the coolest looking venues in London, Tonight Josephine is unlike any other cocktail bar you’ve ever seen. We celebrate and marvel at its totally different take on all things bar. With a brilliant sense of humour and an eye for the unusual, you can find delicious pizzas and some fierce cocktails to get your party started.
Top Tipple: June Bug
Where: Shoreditch, Waterloo
Website | Facebook | Instagram
Trader Vics
There are just so many reasons to love Trader Vic’s. Let’s start with the food menu which is packed with the best flavours from around the world, predominantly South East Asian, a dash of Hawaiian (Polynesian), a touch of American here and there, and a whole load of: “OMG I’ve never tasted anything so good!!”. This is a typically tropical night out that makes you smile like island sunshine.
