SYNOPSIS (FROM MARVEL DATABASE)
After saying goodbye to the Sub-Mariner, Jim Rhodes and Bethany Cabe, Iron Man flies off en route for home. Along the way, he reflects upon the events that made him into the man he is today.
Flashback Tony Stark is in a secluded laboratory within the U.S. defense perimeter in Vietnam during the war. He demonstrates his revolutionary new transistor technology to a U.S. general and shows how it can amplify the power of a single magnet to tear down a solid steel door.
Later, Tony accompanies an army platoon through the jungle. He trips on a land mine and the explosion kills every man in the unit and nearly kills Tony as well. A piece of shrapnel embeds itself in his chest where it is lodged dangerously close to his heart. A North Vietnamese warlord named Wong-Chu takes Tony Stark back to his bunker where he makes him an offer: In exchange for having Wong-Chu's surgeons save his life, Tony must agree to develop weapons for the NVA. Tony has little choice in the matter but to comply. Wong-Chu partners him with an elderly scientist named Ho Yinsen.
Tony Stark and Ho Yinsen labor for many weeks, but they do not develop a weapon to be used by the Vietnamese. Instead, they secretly create a rudimentary battlesuit made from scrap metal and various electronics. When Professor Yinsen is alerted to the arrival of Wong-Chu's men, he rushes out into the corridor to create a distraction, enabling Tony enough time to power up the armor. Emerging from the table as the "Iron Man", Tony hears gunfire and knows that Professor Yinsen is dead. He breaks free of the compound and stalks off into the nearby village to confront Wong-Chu.
He finds Wong-Chu entertaining himself by wrestling captured villagers. Iron Man grabs the warlord, hoists him up into the air, and spins him about before slamming him back onto the ground. Wong-Chu's troops open fire on Iron Man, but their bullets are ineffective against Tony's armor. Wong-Chu flees in panic, but Iron Man ignites a nearby ammunitions dump which explodes, seemingly killing Wong-Chu.
Back in the United States, Tony Stark makes several upgrades to the armor and eventually has a heart transplant, eliminating the need for a transistorized chest plate. As the super-hero Iron Man, he becomes a longtime member of the team known as the Avengers.
As Iron Man approaches Long Island, his flight path is monitored by the criminal industrialist Justin Hammer. Hammer is pleased with his past attempts to control Tony's armor, but now he is preparing for the biggest test of all.
REVIEW
I am going to assume that retelling the origin was an editorial mandate (I am more inclined to think it was ordered by Shooter more than Stern). Because there is very little outside the flashback in this issue, so if you already know the Vietnam origin, there is nothing to see here.
Unless you are a fan of Infantino, he didn’t do a bad job, but some panels look very static. When you compare this issue to the issues around it, John Romita Jr. has a much more dynamic style (or breakdowns).
It is possible that this issue was just a fill in (to meet a deadline), otherwise, I cannot think other reasons to interrupt the main arc.

Both of the transmission settings and the ignition will have TCI or Transistor Controlled Ignition. One of the most impressive details is the performance section. With fuel capacity around 3.7 gallons – riding this motorcycle will be no problem at all. The 2016 Yamaha FZ-09 will have 21.1 inches for the seat height, 56.7 inches for the wheelbase, the Rake section will have 25.0 degrees, and the trail in 4.1 inches. Lot # 7538 – 1987 Buick Grand National
All good things come to an end, and Buick decided to go out with a bang for its final Grand National. In 1987, a lightweight WE4 (turbo T) option was offered and only 1,547 of this variant were produced. This is a mint 1987 Buick Grand National with the WE4 option that is extremely well taken care of and all original; including, its badging to let everyone know you are driving a Grand National. The engine bay is very clean and houses the 3.8L turbo charged V6 rated at 235hp and 330lb-ft. Despite being over 30 years old this Buick is still grand and once the turbo spools up it pounces forward and throws the driver back in their seat like the good old days.
The interior is a two-tone gray and black color scheme. Everything inside is original except for an A-pillar mounted Auto Meter boost gauge. The original Delco radio, floor mats, gauges, and controls are all in very good working shape. It is a very spacious and comfortable interior. ZR1 Retrospect – From Racer Kit to Corvette Supercar
For most of 2016 and 2017, it seemed that the C7 ZR1 would never arrive. The car was supposed to debut at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show but was a no-show. When Chevrolet announced a new “LT5” engine, speculation went wild over the possibility of another DOHC super engine. Then the April 2017 issue of Car and Driver featured a computer rendering of the ZR1 that was just about right on. Through the rest of 2017 there was a steady drip of images of camouflaged ZR1s and juicy details, including the announcement that the new ZR1 would have an eight-speed automatic transmission and be available in as a convertible. Rumor mills are so much fun. Finally on November 11, 2017, the sinister-looking ZR1 debuted in Dubai and didn’t disappoint! Think Z06, but with more power and aero and a bigger price tag. Maximum-performance Corvettes have never been inexpensive.
The C7 ZR1 is the third iteration of a performance model Corvette wearing the “ZR1” moniker. To see the progress of the ZR1, let’s take a walk through the ZR1’s lineage. The original ZR1 arrived in 1970 as a racer kit option that was the L88 suspension package with the solid-lifter LT-1. The package included the LT-1 engine; a metal fan shroud; a four-speed, wide-ratio transmission; heavy-duty power brakes; transistor ignition; a special aluminum radiator; special shocks and springs and front and rear antisway bars. There were no special badges or body parts. This car was strictly for racing and the RPO ZR1 package was very reasonably priced at $968.95. For just $6,160.95, a customer had the basics for a SCCA B/Production Corvette. The ZR1 option was offered from 1970-’72 with a total of 53 units sold. There was supposed to be a ZR2 racer kit with the LS7 454, but it didn’t make it into production in 1970, but was available in 1971 with the slightly milder LS6 454. Just 12 ZR2 ’71 Corvettes were sold.
The ZR-1 moniker resurfaced around 1988 when rumors about a super Corvette under development surfaced. Most Corvette fans said, “What’s a ZR-1?” The car’s development nickname was King of the Hill, a tag that lives on to this day for C4 ZR1s. This would be the first time Chevrolet offered a separate performance model Corvette. Performance engine options had been around since 1956, but the C4 ZR-1 was a complete package Corvette that was very exotic. The star of the C4 ZR-1 was its all-aluminum, Lotus-designed, fuel-injected DOHC 350ci engine. The engine is still a beauty nearly 30 years later and is iconic for its unique eight-pack abs-style intake manifold. The regular Corvette’s L98 engine had 250 horsepower; the ZR-1’s LT5 had an extra 125 horsepower. Yes, 375 horsepower in 1990 was a very big deal.
But this wasn’t just an exotic engine stuffed under the hood of a stock Corvette. To handle the extra power, special 315/35ZR17 Goodyear Z-rated tires were mounted to 11-inch-wide rear rims. To cover the larger tires, the body gradually tapers out from the end of the front fenders to cover wider rear tires. The taillights were square-like with rounded corners and the exhaust tips were rectangular. All of the Z51 suspension and brake parts were standard.
The ZR-1’s price was staggering. The base Corvette cost $31,979 and the ZR-1 option was an additional $27,016, for a grand total of $58,995, plus options. From 1990-’95 a total of 6,922 ZR-1s were sold. 1990 was the best year with 3,032 units sold. By 1993 engineers bumped the power up to 405 horsepower, and in 1994 very handsome-looking five-spoke wheels helped make the ZR-1 look unique. The one critique was that it didn’t look much different from a regular Corvette. From 1990-’93, one has to look for the ZR-1 badge, or have a keen eye to notice the wider rear-section. Looks and price aside, the ZR-1 was universally praised for its power and handling.
When the C5 came along, it was such an improvement over the C4, no one was pining for a ZR1. Then when the C5 Z06 arrived in 2001, offering ZR1-level performance, for around $20,000 less than a ’95 ZR-1, the old King of the Hill was definitely out to pasture. The C5 and C6 Z06 was the new Corvette performance champ. Fast-forward to 2007-’08, the Corvette rumor mill was heating up with rumors of a new super Vette called the Blue Devil. When a test mule was caught on a smart phone video with the distinctive whine of a supercharger, the cat was out of the bag.
When the ’09 ZR1 made its debut, heads exploded. Unlike the C4 ZR-1, the C6 ZR1 was an in-your-face, $103,300, 205-mph velvet brute of a Corvette. The C6 ZR1 was built on the Z06 platform so it had all of the C5-R racer-inspired hardware. Like the C4 ZR-1, the big news was under the hood. Z06 customers thought their 505-horsepower LS7 was a brute, but the ZR1’s supercharged LS9 packed 638 horsepowe with 604 lb-ft of torque. The all-aluminum LS9 engine was not only supercharged, it had an intercooler, port fuel-injection, a 10.75-quart dry-sump oil system and a LUK dual-disc clutch. The TR-6060 six-speed transmission was beefed up and the gear ratios are closer than those in the Z06.
Modern Corvettes are all about suspension and brakes. The Speedline forged aluminum-alloy wheels measure 19×10 in the front and 20×12 in the rear, and are shod with Michelin Pilot Sport tires measuring 285/30R19 on the front and 335/25R20 on the rear. The Brembo carbon ceramic rotors are vented and cross-drilled; measure 15.5×1.6-inches in the front and 15×1.4-inches in the rear. Six-piston calipers are in the front; and four-piston units are in the rear; with pads that are twice the size as those used on the Z06; and will last a lifetime for street use. The Z06 suspension used the next-generation Delphi Magnetorheological variable shocks, softer springs, larger antiroll bars and revised rear suspension geometry.
The entire front end and roof section was made of carbon fiber. Clearcoat covered the carbon-fiber chin spoiler, rocker panel, and roof section. The new hood was 1-inch taller than a regular Corvette’s and a Plexiglas window shows off the LS9’s intercooler. The front and rear fender flares were the same as the Z06, but the front fenders had larger, more aggressive vents and the back end was finished off with a short, full-width spoiler. ZR1 badges adorn the front fenders and rear bumper cover; and the interior is trimmed with ZR1 badges and embroidery on the seats. The speedometer goes up to 220, but there was a 205-mph governor on the car. The C6 ZR1 was another super-expensive Corvette. Costing $103,300, the ’09 ZR1 was over double the $47,895 base Vette. The ’13 ZR1 went for $112,575. From 2009-’13 Chevrolet sold 4,684 ZR1s.
The C7 ZR1 carries the traditional ZR1 status of being a true GT supercar. All of the C7’s delightful attributes are present, plus a lot more. For the first time, a ZR1 is available as a coupe or convertible; and with a seven-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission. The 6.2-liter (376ci) LT5 engine is similar to the Z06’s LT4, but with a 56 percent larger Eaton supercharger, additional port injection, a stronger crankshaft, a more efficient electronic bypass valve and higher volume intercooler fluid. The dedicated 10-spoke wheels are the very similar in size to those on the Z06; the ZR1’s front wheels are a half-inch wider. The ZR1 uses the Z06’s Z07 Package, but with refined spring rates and dampers. Traction Control and Active Handling is a must, and is standard.
The ZR1’s aggressive front end looks that way because it has five extra cooling radiators. Intercoolers are stacked ahead of the radiators in the outer positions. Like a race car, the front underwing extends back to the front wheelwell openings. At the back end, the basic ZR1 has a low fixed wing. For those that want more, there’s the $2,995 ZTK Package with a taller, adjustable rear wing and winglettes on the outboard edges of the front splitter. Weighing in at 3,600-pounds, the C7 ZR1 had an all-time low power-to-weight ratio of 4.76:1. Now the rest of the story … the price. The basic ZR1 coupe lists for $119,995, the convertible goes for $123,995. A ZR1 convertible can max out to just under $156,000.
The new ZR1 lives up to its predecessor’s reputations and exceeds all performance levels. This will most likely be the “finished” C7 Corvette. At the Dubai debut, Corvette chief engineer Tadge Juechter said that his engineering team did everything they could possibly do to the C7 platform when developing the ZR1. Each H.E. ignition unit receives a low voltage supply, controlled by the starting system electrical circuit, from the aircraft electrical system. The electrical energy is stored in the unit until, at a pre- determined value, the energy is dissipated as a high voltage, high amperage discharge across the igniter plug. Ignition units are rated in 'joules' (one joule equals one watt per second). They are designed to give outputs which may vary according to require- ments. A high value output (e.g. However, under certain flight conditions, such as icing or take-off in heavy rain or snow, it may be necessary to have the ignition system continuously operating to give an automatic relight should flame extinction occur.
For this condition, a low value output (e.g. Consequently, to suit all engine operating conditions, a combined system giving a high and low value output is favoured. Such a system would consist of one unit emitting a high output to one igniter plug, and a second unit giving a low output to a second igniter plug. However, some ignition units are capable o! An induction coil, operated by the trembler mechanism, charges the reservoir capacitor (condenser) through a high voltage rectifier. When the voltage in the capacitor is equal to the breakdown value of a sealed discharge gap, the energy is discharged across the face of the igniter plug.
A choke is fitted to extend the duration of the discharge and a discharge resistor is fitted to ensure that any residual stored energy in the capacitor is dissipated within one minute of the system being switched off. A safety resistor is fitted to enable the unit to operate safely, even when the high tension lead is disconnected and isolated. Operation of the transistorized ignition unit is similar to that of the D.C. The size of the transistorized unit is reduced and its weight is less than that of the trembler-operated unit. 2017 Yamaha FZ25 Announced For India
While Americans are still waiting for Yamaha to grace our shores with its MT-03/FZ-03, customers in India have another new small-displacement FZ model coming their way. Introduced this week by India Yamaha Motor Pvt. Ltd., the FZ25 is designed specifically for the Indian market as an upgrade over the existing 150cc FZ and FZ-S. Yamaha expects to sell 40,000 units at a price of 119,500 rupees (about $1,755 US), a competitive price for the 250cc segment in India. “The FZ Series performed very well in India and crossed 1.3 million sales since its launch and has developed as a strong brand in the deluxe segment,” says Masaki Asano, managing director of India Yamaha Motor. “Now the deluxe segment customers can step up to a premium model and Yamaha is very happy to offer an option which is armed with more power, impressive new features, sporty look and aggressive styling.”
Visually, there’s a familial connection to the FZ-07, especially in the air scoops behind the fork legs and the 10-spoke wheel design. The headlight is an LED unit, which Yamaha claims is a first for a 250cc bike in India. Other features include an LCD instrument cluster, swingarm-mounted mudguard and moderately rear-set footpegs.
The FZ25’s engine appears to be based on the 249cc air-cooled Single powering the Yamaha XT250, with the same 74.0 mm bore and 58.0mm stroke. The engine is updated with Yamaha’s Blue Core technology, the company’s development philosophy aimed at improving combustion efficiency, cooling efficiency and a reduction in parasitic power losses. Compared to the XT250’s engine, Yamaha claims more power and torque on the FZ25, claiming peak figures of 20.6 hp at 8000 rpm and 14.8 lb-ft. at 6000 rpm. Fuel consumption is said to top 100 mpg, which would give the FZ25 a range of about 370 miles on a full 3.7 gallon tank. Yamaha says the FZ25 complies with India’s Bharat Stage IV, an emissions standard based on the European model that takes effect in April.
The 41mm telescopic fork offers a generous 5.1 inches of travel while the rear shock offers 4.7 inches of give. A two-piston caliper is paired with the 282mm front rotor while a single-piston caliper stops the 220mm rear disc. Both wheels come with tubeless tires. The 2017 Yamaha FZ25 arrives in showrooms across India in February with three choices of colors: Ballistic Blue, Warrior White or Knight Black.
