A Comprehensive Guide to Construction White Card Training in Melbourne
If you're planning to work in the construction industry in Australia, obtaining a white card is a legal requirement. For those in Melbourne, construction white card training is the essential first step in ensuring you meet the safety standards necessary to work on a construction site. In this blog, we’ll cover everything you need to know about construction white card training in Melbourne.
What is a Construction White Card?
A construction white card, also known as a general construction induction card, is an official certification that demonstrates a worker’s understanding of workplace safety practices and their legal responsibilities on construction sites. It is a mandatory qualification required for anyone entering a construction zone, including site workers, supervisors, and managers.
Why Do You Need a White Card?
The construction industry is inherently hazardous, with risks related to heavy machinery, dangerous materials, and complex operations. The white card training equips workers with the knowledge to identify safety risks, respond appropriately to hazards, and ensure a safe working environment for themselves and others. Without it, you’re not legally permitted to work on any site.
What Does the Training Cover?
When enrolling in construction white card training in Melbourne, the course typically covers:
Workplace Safety and Hazard Management: Understanding how to spot hazards and reduce risks on construction sites.
Work Health and Safety (WHS) Regulations: Gaining knowledge of local laws and regulations related to safety.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Learning how to properly use safety equipment such as helmets, gloves, and eye protection.
Emergency Procedures: Knowing how to act quickly and effectively in the event of an accident or emergency.
Risk Assessment: Developing skills to assess and manage risks associated with different construction activities.
How Long Does the Training Take?
Construction white card training in Melbourne is typically completed in a day. The course includes both theory and practical components to ensure participants are well-prepared for working on-site. After successfully completing the course, participants will receive a nationally recognized white card that is valid across Australia.
Choosing a Training Provider
When looking for a provider for Construction White Card Training in Melbourne, it’s essential to select a registered training organization (RTO) that offers accredited courses. Make sure the provider is recognized and delivers training that meets the standards set by WorkSafe Victoria. It’s also worth considering the mode of training delivery, whether face-to-face or online, depending on your learning preferences and availability.
What Happens After You Receive Your White Card?
Once you’ve completed your white card training, you’ll receive a statement of attainment, followed by your white card. With your white card in hand, you can legally work on construction sites across Melbourne and Australia. Additionally, some employers may require further specific training, depending on the type of construction work you’ll be doing.
Conclusion
Obtaining a white card through construction white card training in Melbourne is essential for ensuring your safety and compliance in the construction industry. The training not only provides you with legal certification but also equips you with the knowledge and skills to maintain a safe working environment for everyone on-site. Whether you're new to the industry or seeking to renew your credentials, make sure you invest time in quality training with a trusted provider.

Why Should Construction Workers Opt for White Card Training in Melbourne?
Are you planning to get employed in the construction sector? Do you hold a white card? A construction industry career brings several challenges that only professionally trained and qualified experts can handle. Initially, every region in Australia had its safety card ranging from green to red and blue cards. However, since 2011 the nationally recognised course for white card training in Melbourne has replaced the other cards. As a result, you can work in different construction sites across the Australian states with a single white card. If you still have a blue card, enrolling in a training course and becoming qualified for a white card is better.
Tumblr media
A White Card is a mandatory legal requirement
It is legally mandatory that individuals working in the construction industry who wish to enter a construction site must hold a white card. You cannot even legally enter a construction site without having a white card. Therefore, enrolling in a training course is advisable if you do not possess a white card and intend to work on a construction site. A white card can be easily obtained by completing the much-needed construction induction training course under a registered training organisation (RTO). RTOs provide vocational education and training services. To be an RTO, an organisation must be legally recognised by the appropriate regulators to offer training and qualifications. WorkSafe Victoria, the statutory authority and the primary body for managing and enforcing workplace safety, outlines on their website every registered training organisation that you can complete a white card training course.
A White Card ensures safety in workplaces
Workplaces are full of people working using different machines and equipment. This makes them potentially prone to several health hazards and accidents that may harm life and cause property damage. Moreover, workplaces also require heavy loads to be lifted to heights or goods that need to be shifted from one area to another. In doing all of this, one thing that remains constant is the safety concern. A proper course on white card training in Melbourne takes care of this vital aspect and ensures that every individual working in a workplace is well aware of all the safety best practices. The course provides comprehensive knowledge about common site hazards, mitigating site-related risks, and health and safety laws.

How the First Sports Bra Got Its Stabilizing Start
Tumblr media
SMITHSONIANMAG.COM | March 18, 2020, 12:48 p.m.
It was 1977, and Hinda Miller, Lisa Lindahl and Polly Smith were doubled over with raucous laughter. They say their very clothing was in jeopardy.
“We were literally peeing in our pants we were laughing so hard,” chuckles Lindahl. The object of their amusement? Lindahl’s then-husband and his shenanigans with his jock strap.
“He put his jock strap on upside down across his chest, and put it on like a one cup bra,” Smith remembers as the others giggle in the background, “and all of a sudden we looked at him and thought, ‘Hmmm.’”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Frustrated by the bras on the market, the three co-inventors of the sports bra (from left: Polly Smith, Hinda Miller and Lisa Lindahl) made a prototype using a pair of men’s jock straps.
(National Inventors Hall of Fame)
The three told CBS News Radio that they had spent the summer going to a plethora of stores trying on bras. They were looking for comfort in the midst of the jogging craze that struck the nation after the release of incredibly popular book, The Complete Book of Running. If one looks at ads for bras in 1977, one can see there isn’t a lot of construction that would keep a woman’s breasts from bouncing painfully while running. But the jock strap looked like it could work, especially after Lindahl took it from her husband, pulled it over her own head, and pulled the pouch down over her own breast so that it worked like the cup of a brassiere.
“It made sense to me because I said, ‘Oh, that’s something you climb into,’” Smith remembers, seeing through the eyes of the costume designer she was. “It will stretch, it eliminates all the hooks, and it is nice, soft elastic. So, after that, I was on board.”
Miller, who was also a costume designer, says the whole situation was really funny because they knew nothing about bras. “We had no limitations. We didn’t know you couldn’t sew jock straps together because in costume design, creativity is the highest value and you do things out of the box. And as everyone said, that was out of the box,” says Miller.
Tumblr media
“It was a joke during a phone call with my sister, who said, ‘What do you wear when you’re running to make you comfortable and make your breasts not bounce uncomfortably?’” Lisa Lindahl recalls
(Jogbra Inc. Collections, Archives Center, NMAH)
The whole project got started because Lindahl and her sister, Victoria Woodrow, were among the many women who took up running (they called it jogging then) in the 1970s, and their brassieres were falling down on the job.
“It was a joke during a phone call with my sister, who said, ‘What do you wear when you’re running to make you comfortable and make your breasts not bounce uncomfortably?’” Lindahl recalls. “She said,’ Why isn’t there a jock strap for women? Ha Ha Ha!’ We both laughed . . . and it’s the same idea for a different part of the anatomy.”
Lindahl says she wasn’t a jock herself, nor was she athletic. But she started running to loose weight in an era where Charlie’s Angels was on television, and women wanted to look like the stars of the show.
youtube
“And I kept running because it became really my first spiritual practice. It made me feel good. It made me feel empowered, and I came up with the idea for the bra to solve my own personal problem,” Lindahl says. “And then I thought, If I want this, I bet other women do too.”
But first, they needed to come up with a prototype, and the fabric used to make jock straps was not quite right. The garment needed a firmer fabric and a much firmer elastic. So, Smith went to New York City, bought sample yardage, and made a prototype for Lindahl to try out. Lindahl went running, and Miller ran backwards in front of her, to see if the bra worked.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Prototypes are now in the Smithsonian collections and will go on view in an upcoming exhibition “Picturing Women Inventors.”
(Jogbra Inc. Collections, Archives Center, NMAH)
“I’m going, ‘Oh no that’s really going to inhibit my run,’” Lindahl says, laughing. But she says not only did it work, it felt great. “I thought, ‘This really makes a difference.’ . . . And Hinda said, “It looks like your breasts aren’t moving so much.’ And we knew we had a winner!”
Miller adds that the run taught them a lot. For one thing, she says, you can’t stop the breasts from moving. You can only minimize that. “What we figured out that everyone does now, is we pulled the breasts closer to the central line of gravity,” she says, referring to the plethora of products that followed their lead. “When the breasts go up and down without any support, the Cooper’s ligaments stretch, and that’s not good if you want to breastfeed your baby, or all of us are quite vain and we don’t want things to hang. So, we supported the breast by pulling the breast close to the chest wall.”
Tumblr media
“We had no limitations. We didn’t know you couldn’t sew jock straps together because in costume design, creativity is the highest value and you do things out of the box. And as everyone said, that was out of the box,” says Hinda Miller.
(Jogbra Inc. Collections, Archives Center, NMAH)
Smith gave the prototype to Lindahl and went to New York City to mount an off-Broadway play. Miller went to South Carolina to teach costume design. Lindahl formed a corporation and issued shares to the three of them, then sent the garment to Miller. At that time, they were calling it the Jock Bra. Miller showed it to the owner of a small franchise called Phidippides, where the owner’s daughter ran a 5K and offered some suggestions for alterations. Miller hired an unemployed sewing supervisor named Carolyn Morris, who worked out the sizing for what all of the women felt was an athletic garment. But in South Carolina, women didn’t like being called jocks.
“So, I called Lisa, and she said, ‘Well what about Jogbra?’ and that’s how the name came about,” Miller says, adding that her father loaned then $5,000 to get everything started. “Carolyn made 60 dozen bras. I sent half to Lisa, half to myself, and we sold them in these small running stores . . . and that’s how we started our first sales history!”
But there was a lot to learn about the marketing process, even though the Jogbra was so popular they made a profit in their very first year. They say they don’t remember how much. By 1979, they went to their first sporting goods show in Chicago. They had a small booth, and a blow-up photo of a Playboy Bunny wearing the bra. It cost $4 to make, $8 wholesale and $16 retail. Lindahl remembers that there was a line of customers ready to buy it, and a line of sales representatives who wanted to work with them. At the time, she says, they didn’t even know what a ‘rep’ was.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Marketing was at first a challenge with sporting goods stores uncomfortable with selling women’s bras.
(Jogbra Inc. Collections, Archives Center, NMAH)
“I came in from a run one day and my phone was ringing. I answered it and a man said, ‘Y’all looking for reps?’ I went, ‘What’s a rep?’” Lindahl laughs. “There’s this long pause and this lovely gentleman said, ‘Y’all new to the sporting goods industry?’ And I said, ‘Yeah.’”
Lindahl says he spent an hour and a half on the phone with her, explaining how the industry worked, what a trade show was, and what they should and should not do. She hired him on the spot, and the company did so well they sold it 12 years later to Playtex Apparel. They won’t say for how much. Other sales followed, the brand got subsumed by Champion Sportswear and the rest is history.
The Jogbra Inc. Collection,” including the prototypes, some sketches and early advertising and marketing materials, is held in the Archives Center of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, though it is not currently on display. The three women just did a panel discussion sponsored by the museum’s Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation, and they have been inducted this year into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. They will also be featured in the museum’s upcoming exhibition “Picturing Women Inventors.”
But all these years later, with women everywhere sporting Jogbras, Polly Smith has to smile at the fact that she created the very first prototype.
“When I’m in the gym,” Smith says, “and these women are strutting around in it and I’m like, laughing to myself.”
The exhibition “Picturing Women Inventors,” sponsored by the Lemelson Center, is scheduled to go on view May 22, 2020 at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. Currently, to support the effort to contain the spread of COVID-19, all Smithsonian museums in Washington, D.C. and in New York City, as well as the National Zoo, are temporarily closed. Check listings for updates.

What is a Paper Making Machine?
I know you’re looking for a paper bag machine that’s why you are here.
Maybe, you want to be a paper bag wholesaler or make branded designs for your retail business.
The truth is, paper bags are dear packages for food vendors, retailers, and even manufacturers.
But, how can you venture in this business?
Or, what is the most cost effective way of making paper bags?
Today’s guide debunks the facts behind paper bag making process and machine such basic definition, working principle, classification, design, technical specification, etc.
So stay with me to be an expert in paper bag making industry.
Let’s begin with some facts.
Apart from the other devastating problems associated with plastic bags, did you know that synthetic bag manufacturers produce about one trillion of those bags in a year globally?
Did you also know that it takes one thousand years for a single bag of this kind to biodegrade?
Yes, that’s the scariest part of it.
Due to that, most governments are imposing bans on these carriers.
The alternative?
A mega-shift to more environmentally friendly paper bags.
So basically a paper bag making machine is a state of the art machine that gathers, folds, stamps, and processes papers to produce clean paper bags.
These paper bags are for use in the packaging of goods in various industries such as food, pharmaceutical products, grocery, and baking industries.
The bag making machines come in various configurations depending on the type of bags for final production.
Therefore, the paper bag making system should be versatile enough to cater to the dynamics in the paper bag manufacturing.
Today different paper bag making stakeholders such as the machine manufacturers, raw material suppliers face a lot of shifting customer demands, government regulations, changing prices, etc.
It’s thus good only if the machine can afford the manufacturer some relief.
For that matter, it means that you need to know all the factors related to the paper bag making the machine.
Besides, all the accompanying dynamics before making a purchase.
Luckily, I have compiled all that you need to know in this article.
The history of development and use of paper bag making machine dates back to the 19th century.
During these early stages, the systems were simple and mechanically operated.
With that, we move to the next step.
Where to Use Paper Bag Making Machine
Take a moment to reflect on the occasions you use a paper bag.
Indeed paper bag forms a vital integral in our lives today.
From simple uses such as carrying random goods to more complex ones such as in pharmaceuticals to wrap up drugs.
One thing is for sure.
Without paper bag making machine, we would be missing a significant aspect of our lives.
Surely, there are numerous uses of paper bag making the machine.
Subsequently, the produced paper bags can be classified under different distinct categories depending on their purposes.
We carry stuff in them -– groceries, clothes, gifts, trash and booze. I carried my lunch to school in one until the fourth grade because my mother would decorate them with stickers and drawings. People add sand and candles to them to illuminate their neighbourhoods at Christmas. Disgruntled sports fans cover their heads with them. But how many people know where the flat-bottomed paper bag came from? Or that its invention was a triumph of feminism over patriarchy, and of brains over bullying?
For most of recorded history, containers were made of leather, wood, cotton and reeds. Paper, made by hand one sheet at a time, was a luxury, used only for books, records and letters by the literate few. In 1799, a French inventor named Louis-Nicolas Robert was granted a patent for a machine that produced rolls of paper. This invention brought paper to the masses. Soon, merchants were using rolled paper, or ‘cornucopias’, to package small quantities of goods, with predictably messy results. They also constructed rudimentary paper bags by hand, which was a time-consuming and not always successful process.
The race was on to produce a paper bag that was both sturdy and easy to make. In 1852, the American Francis Wolle received the first patent for a square bottom paper bag machine. It used steam and paste to create bags in the shape of envelopes. Though the machine became popular, the bags it produced were cumbersome and of limited use – picture a load of groceries in a large envelope-shaped sack. Still, they were better than nothing at all, and factories producing the bags multiplied. In the late 1860s, Margaret Knight, a tall, endlessly inquisitive and hard-working New Englander, went to work for the Columbia Paper Bag Company in Springfield, Massachusetts. Within a few years, her ingenious designs would revolutionise the industry.
Born in 1838, Knight’s childhood was shaped by the industrial revolution. At first glance, hers is the classic victim’s story – raised by a widowed mother, and put to work by the age of 10 in the brutally inhospitable cotton mills of New Hampshire. But from her earliest days this uneducated labourer had an agile, inventive mind. While still a child, Knight saw a fellow worker injured when a steel-tipped shuttle shot off a loom. She soon created a shuttle cover to prevent any more accidents, and her invention was adopted by her factory. In an interview with the progressive Woman’s Journal in 1872, she recalled her unconventional youth: As a child, I never cared for things that girls usually do; dolls never possessed any charms for me. I couldn’t see the sense of coddling bits of porcelain with senseless faces: the only things I wanted were a jack-knife, a gimlet, and pieces of wood. My friends were horrified. I was called a tomboy; but that made very little impression on me. I sighed sometimes, because I was not like the other girls; but wisely concluded that I couldn’t help it, and sought further consolation from my tools. I was always making things for my brothers; did they want anything in the line of playthings, they always said: ‘Mattie will make them for us.’ I was famous for my kites; and my sleds were the envy and admiration of all the boys in town.
By the time she joined the Columbia Paper Bag Company as a lowly factory worker, the 30-something, unmarried Knight had spent years as a ‘Jill-of-all-trades’, becoming proficient in daguerreotype, photography, engraving, house repair and upholstering. Spending long hours at the factory, she soon heard of current efforts to create a flat bottom paper bag machine that could efficiently manufacture flat bottom paper bag. ‘I am told that there is no such machine known as a square-bottomed machine,’ she wrote in her journal. ‘I mean to try away at it until I get my ideas worked out.’ Independent of the factory and without her bosses’ knowledge, Knight began to study the issue intently.
By 1867, she was hard at work on creating a machine that could ‘cut, fold and paste bag bottoms itself’. Her work kept her up at night, leading the manager of her boarding house to declare: ‘I saw her making drawings continually… always of the machine. She has known nothing else, I think.’ Her work on the machine also bled into her shifts at the factory. This initially annoyed her superiors – until she showed them her plans – which led them to believe that she had a ‘keener eye than any man in the works’. After a ‘rickety’ wooden model of her machine proved successful, producing thousands of ‘good, handsome bags’, she had an iron version produced in 1868. While the machine was at a Boston shop to be refined, it was viewed by Charles F Annan, a would-be-inventor of dubious morality.
Knight prepared to apply for a patent for her new machine. In 1871, she was shocked to find that Annan had already been granted a patent to the machine, which he claimed as his own. The dispute ended up in court, where the cash-strapped Knight spent $100 a day to hire a patent attorney to prove that she was the machine’s true inventor. Annan’s lawyer argued that an uneducated, self-taught woman could never have built such a sophisticated machine. He was countered at every turn by the mountains of physical evidence and eye-witness testimony Knight produced. ‘I have from my earliest recollection been connected in some way with machinery,’ Knight protested. In the end, the commissioner of patents found in favour of Knight, though officials could not resist chastising her for waiting so long to apply for her patent. However, since Knight was not a ‘man of business’, this oversight was forgiven.
On 11 July 1871, Knight was granted patent number 116,842 for her ‘new and improved shopping paper bag machine for making paper bags’. She soon formed the Eastern Paper Bag Company with a partner, and became a media darling for her revolutionary machine, which did the work of 30 labourers. The new stand-alone, flat-bottomed bags were quickly adopted by large department stores and grocers, and Knight was awarded a royal honour from Queen Victoria. In 1883, Charles Stilwell of the Union Paper Bag Machine Company, working from Knight’s patent, further advanced the paper bag with his invention of a machine that produced the Self-Opening-Sack (SOS), the pleated flat-bottomed bags that are used today.
The vivacious Knight, dubbed by one paper the ‘lady Edison’, would spend the rest of her long life – she died aged 76 in 1914 – inventing. By 2006, when she was inducted into the Paper Industry International Hall of Fame, it was estimated that around 25 billion paper sacks were used annually throughout the world.
In the past decade, Knight’s dramatic story has been told in two popular children’s books – Marvelous Mattie (2006) by Emily Arnold McCully, and In the Bag! (2011) by Monica Kulling. She is emblematic of a whole multitude of female inventors, such as Mary Anderson (the windshield wiper), Katharine Blodgett (non-reflective glass), and Stephanie Kwolek (Kevlar), who created life-changing inventions within industries – and a world – dominated by men. Their stories are important and should be better known. They can inspire future generations of girls and young women to tinker, experiment and invent.

The powerful message of the FLQ’s October manifesto
A newsboy holds up a newspaper with a banner headline reporting the invoking of the Conflict Measures Act on Oct. 16, 1970, following the kidnapping of British diplomat James Cross and Québec Labour Minister Pierre Laporte by the FLQ. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Peter Bregg
The FLQ’s October 1970 Manifesto, delivered 50 years in the past this month, is among the finest ever written polemical items in Canadian historical past. It stands someplace within the literary pantheon with the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation’s Regina Manifesto, Refus International and some different texts.
Such a press release could appear puzzling provided that it was launched shortly after the kidnapping of James Cross, the British commerce commissioner, in October 1970 in Montréal, quickly adopted by the kidnapping and homicide of Pierre Laporte, Québec’s labour minister.
Nonetheless, a cautious studying of the manifesto reveals why it struck a chord amongst many French-speaking Quebecers. 4 parts may be underscored which might be widespread to nearly all nice political speeches in historical past:
Setting
Dialectic of anger and hope
Personalization of the problems
Empowerment
Announcer Gaétan Montreuil reads the manifesto on CBC. Courtesy of YouTube.
The setting
The setting during which a doc is delivered to the general public is at all times necessary. The printed of the FLQ manifesto is not any exception.
Listed among the many seven calls for for Cross’s launch, the manifesto was learn on French CBC on Oct. Eight by announcer Gaétan Montreuil.
The distinction was stark between Montreuil’s impeccable co-called “worldwide” French, his uninteresting and flat tone of voice, his tailor-made go well with and the manifesto’s use of joual (colloquial Canadian French) and really crude pictures.
In a manner, the CBC’s setting elevated the manifesto. It clothed it in respectable garment.
Tumblr media
Robert Charlebois is seen after being inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Corridor of Fame in Toronto in March 2010. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Chris Younger
In 1968, playwright Michel Tremblay brought about an outrage when he let actors use joual. In 1969, rock singer Robert Charlebois infected younger crowds together with his songs in joual.
The printed of the FLQ Manifesto had an identical impression. For the primary time, working-class viewers have been listening to themselves represented on nationwide tv.
Anger and hope
The manifesto employed some coarse language. It was vulgar, prejudiced and accusatory.
It said that the FLQ wished to purge Québec “of the clique of voracious sharks, the patronizing ‘massive bosses’ and their henchmen who’ve made Québec their non-public looking floor for reasonable labour and unscrupulous exploitation.”
Utilizing the extremely efficient rhetorical device of reiteration, the manifesto underscored how folks in Québec have been fed up.
“We’ve had our fill,” repeats the manifesto many instances. Quebecers had had “their fill” of abuses, lies and contempt.
Anger, as we all know, is probably probably the most highly effective emotion driving mobilization. “I’m as mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore,” famously shouts Howard Beale within the 1976 movie Community. In 1970, many Quebecers have been “mad as hell.”
Nonetheless, having detailed Quebecers’ frustration, the FLQ manifesto ended on a hopeful observe:
“Our wrestle can solely be victorious. An awakening folks can’t be saved in distress and contempt for lengthy.”
Someday quickly, concluded the FLQ, Quebecers will be capable of reside in “a free society, working by itself and for itself, a society open to the world.” Having lived for therefore lengthy in darkness, they might see the sunshine.
Personalization
The FLQ manifesto didn’t describe the scenario within the summary. Quite the opposite, it personalised the problems.
It talked about particular strikes and working-class struggles. It spoke of the employees at Ayers, Seven-Up, Victoria Precision, Dupont, Domtar, the blue-collar employees in Laval and Montréal, the milk producers, the law enforcement officials, the fishermen of the Gaspé, the employees of the North Shore, the miners, the welfare recipients, Montréal taxi drivers, and so on. And it addressed folks by their title.
It talked about “Mr. Bergeron of Visitation Avenue” and “Mr. Legendre of Laval,” who didn’t earn an honest residing and didn’t “be happy in our nation of Québec.”
It talked about “Mr. Tremblay of Panet Avenue” and “Mr. Cloutier, who works in building in St. Jérôme” and always felt betrayed by corrupt politicians.
It talked about “Mrs. Lemay of St. Hyacinthe,” who couldn’t “pay for little journeys to Florida just like the rotten judges and parliamentarians do with our cash.”
By making the problems private, the FLQ manifesto felt actual. It appeared that the oppression of working-class francophones was not one thing its authors had merely examine in books.
Empowerment
The FLQ manifesto known as for a revolution. However this revolution was to not be led by ringleaders and avant-garde activists.
The primary line of the FLQ manifesto is unambiguous on this regard: “The Entrance de libération du Québec is neither the Messiah nor a modern-day Robin Hood.”
If Quebecers have been to take management of their future, they must stand up from the place they have been. They must rely at the beginning on themselves.
The manifesto ends with a transparent rallying cry to all Quebecers:
“Manufacturing unit employees, miners and loggers; service-industry employees, lecturers, college students and the unemployed, take again what belongs to you, your jobs, your willpower and your liberty …. Don’t watch for some miracle group. Make your individual revolution in your neighbourhoods, in your locations of labor. When you don’t do it yourselves, different technocratic usurpers and so forth will substitute the handful of cigar people who smoke we now know, and the whole lot should be carried out over once more. Solely you’ll be able to construct a free society.”
Actions converse louder than phrases
After the FLQ manifesto was broadcast on Oct. 8, 1970, French-speaking Quebecers felt uplifted. It expressed lots of their considerations.
However on Oct. 17, when Laporte was discovered lifeless within the trunk of a automotive, murdered in chilly blood by his FLQ kidnappers, the FLQ manifesto took an altogether completely different which means. It was now not a good, hopeful and empowering doc that Quebecers might relate to.

The truth that the FLQ cell that assassinated Laporte was not the identical one which composed the manifesto didn’t matter. Each have been in solidarity.
They need to have recognized that actions converse louder than phrases.

High-tech advancements and innovations in the construction industry have made many of our modern buildings possible.  The Conco Companies’ team follows many of these developments and implements advanced methods when applicable to our concrete services.
For the last several decades, researchers have been interested in discovering ways to extend the life of concrete used in buildings, bridges, and highways and to make it more sustainable.  One of the ways this may be accomplished is to develop self-healing concrete, which is a process to embed concrete with a reactive substance that will begin to fill in cracks as they appear and harden.
A recent article on the ConstructConnect website reports on efforts from the University of Victoria in British Columbia to develop self-healing concrete and asphalt.  In this particular study, researchers are experimenting with a variety of fibers including fly ash and wood cellulose.
In another study a group of researchers from the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands is using “dormant bacteria spores to create a bioconcrete.”  In this process as the concrete begins to crack and the spores of bacillus bacteria are exposed to water, they are activated and begin “feeding on calcium lactate, consuming oxygen in the process.”  Once the oxygen is gone, the calcium lactate converts to limestone and hardens and seals the cracks.
The Delft University has another team that has been “adding small steel wool fibers to the porous asphalt concrete mix to make the pavement electrically conductive.”  Once induction heating is applied to the asphalt, it heals the cracks.
Please visit Conco’s website to learn more about our impressive portfolio of projects.  We offer a wide range of concrete services including pumping, rebar fabrication and installation, shotcrete, formwork, design/build, turnkey and general contracting solutions.  We also provide construction hauling in some of our service areas.
At The Conco Companies, we are one of the leading concrete contractors in the Western U.S. and offer a wide range of quality services and products.  Our experience includes providing services for commercial, educational, parking and other construction development as well as public works projects.  We serve California, Washington State, Oregon, Colorado and Nevada.

"All of our days are numbered. We cannot afford to be idle. To act on a bad idea is better than to not act at all. Because the worth of the idea never becomes apparent until you do it. Sometimes this idea can be the smallest thing in the world, a little flame that you hunch over and cup with your hand, and pray will not be extinguished by all the storm that howls about it. If you could hold onto that flame, great things could construct around it, that are massive and powerful and world changing, all held up by the tiniest of ideas."
Nicholas Edward Cave is an Australian musician, singer-songwriter, author, screenwriter, composer and occasional film actor, best known as the frontman of the rock band Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Cave's music is generally characterised by emotional intensity, a wide variety of influences, and lyrical obsessions with death, religion, love and violence.
Born and raised in rural Victoria, Cave studied art before turning to music in the 1970s. As frontman of the Boys Next Door (later renamed the Birthday Party), he became a central figure in Melbourne's burgeoning post-punk scene. The band relocated to London in 1980, but, disillusioned by life there, evolved towards a darker, more challenging sound, and acquired a reputation as "the most violent live band in the world". The Birthday Party is regarded as a major influence on gothic rock, and Cave, with his shock of black hair, baritone singing voice and pale, emaciated look, was described in the media as a poster boy for the genre.
After the break-up of the Birthday Party in 1983, Cave formed Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Much of the band's early material was set in a mythic American Deep South, drawing on spirituals and Delta blues, while Cave's preoccupation with Old Testament notions of good versus evil culminated in what has been called his signature song, "The Mercy Seat" (1988). The 1996 album Murder Ballads features "Where the Wild Roses Grow", a duet with Kylie Minogue, Cave's most commercially successful single to date. The band has released 16 studio albums, the most recent being 2016's Skeleton Tree. Cave formed the garage rock group Grinderman in 2006, which has since released two albums.
Cave's songs have been covered by a wide range of artists, including Johnny Cash, Metallica and Arctic Monkeys. He was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2007.

This whole ‘pick apples and we’ll give you another year’ scheme is nonsense. I want to stay another year in Australia, ergo I’m immediately inducted into a broken system that seems hellbent against reason.
I have to complete 88 days of farm work. It can be fruit picking, fruit packing, mining (actual digging), construction, tree planting, tree felling, working with farm animals (directly), and sometimes disaster relief. The gist is, it’s mostly seasonal work available in mostly rural areas. But not just rural, it's gotta be within a list of acceptable postcodes. This last part makes it tricky. So off to the county I go.
When I think of rural Victoria, I think of the whole state like a giant spiderweb. At its heart, Melbourne, a growing and bustling city. The father out you go, the smaller the nodes become. Civilization drags on and dwindles, stretching until its last, meager breath. Where I was today was actually a few notches above nothing. Definitely a far cry from a rural outpost. It’s got mom and pop shops, a strong retail market and decent transit. It’s even got the largest KFC I’ve seen in a while, probably former corporate real estate venture that dried up. And strangely, it thrives. It would be as if Brockville, Ontario were suddenly the place to be. Very different from what I was expecting.
So cut to my adventure today:
I woke up super early and got to Southern Cross station. I hopped on the train, which was actually quite easy to snooze in. Quick transition to a coach bus, and voila. I’m in Brockville - I mean, Shepparton.
A sweltering walk in hot jeans led me to today’s Mecca - MADEC. This part was exactly like I pictured, office-like, cheap, grey, supposedly cheerful seats. I was greeted and told to sit and wait for an intake form for work. Finally I felt as though I was brushing up against some sort of system - some structure I realized I sorely missed. I was asked and confirmed yes, I was a working holiday visa and yes I was looking for a second year.
I was whisked into a narrow hallway and asked for my passport. In the hallway. Not at the desk I just saw. After dropping and shuffling through my bags, my details were copied out (which could have been done online, I grumbled). I stood in the same hallway for a photo. This was for my madec card I learned. I was then told to sit through a (mediocre) recorded presentation on fruit picking.
When I first came in, a distant voice was droning on about not smoking near the workplace, which I dutifully tuned out. Don’t smoke, won’t, never will. But this was only the first bit. I was given an induction sheet, which turned out to be a multiple choice quiz to make sure you’re paying attention. The presentation was narrated by an Australian woman speaking very matter of factly about not pooping next to fruit trees (use washrooms provided whilst sitting correctly on toilet seat), the importance of hand washing (answer d) all of the above), and right of ways with tractors (they’ll crush you). Don’t get me wrong, it was important but presented in a bone-headed, ‘well duh’ sort of way.
Anyway the presentation barely covered a fraction of what the woman was saying, maybe three short bullet points for each topic. And it was shown on the screen in small font, in English, Chinese, and two other languages I couldn’t identify. Fairly straightforward for me, but I had concerns.
As a native English speaker, I could tell I had an immediate advantage over the other two young women also there for their induction. I was able to ask questions about why I was only given one farmer to text and set up my first day, where local backpackers and motels where, and could they please email or call me first if something was available (turns out it’s first come, first serve, best of luck. There is no wait list or other way to do this better, apparently.)
So I trekked three hours for a piece of plastic, one phone number, and a promise of employment hopefully within the week. Thanks Shepparton.
I’m very aware of how I sound. The blind confidence, the assurance that I could walk into a recruitment agency and walk out with more of a plan is laughable. Every step of this journey requires effort. I keep forgetting that. While questions and concerns are answered and dismissed online, in practice it’s much more difficult. Like when getting an apartment, getting a job, printing pictures, transportation - and getting farmwork. All it takes is getting out there and hitting the pavement and rolling with the punches. There’s an applicable mixed metaphor for my situation I’m sure. Until then.
