The Zodiacal Signs
There are twelve signs of the zodiac. Tropical astrology does not deal with the stars or constellations. It is only concerned with the planets, including the Sun and Moon, and their positions in the signs of the zodiac. these signs are divided into different categories to help us better understand their natures.
Each of the signs is classified as Fire, Earth, Air, or Water. These are the four basic elements. Fire sign personalities are outgoing, energetic, spontaneous, and impulsive. The Fire signs are Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius. Earth sign personalities (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) are stable, conservative, practical, and materialistic. Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius personalities—the Air sign types—are intellectual, critical. sociable, yet detached. Water sign types (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) are emotional, receptive, intuitive, and indecisive. Each sign is also classified as being Cardinal, Mutable, or Fixed. There are four signs in each quadrature, one sign of each element. The Cardinal signs—Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn— are most powerful signs that occur on the four angles of the chart; their key word: action. Fixed sign types—Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius—are persistent, organized, stubborn; their word: strength. Mutable sign types are adaptable, impressionable, tolerant. They are Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces their key word: flexibility.
ARIES—March 21 - April 19
Element: Fire   Quality: Cardinal   Planet: Mars
Personal, Cardinal, Fire. Initiator, quick. spontaneous. combative.
Aries signifies new beginnings, Spring, Youth, the untried, and is connected with One—The First. This sign is pioneering, exploring, an executive and leader. Aries is self-disciplined, with a dislike of supervision or domination. The Aries mentality is quick, direct. active, arid organized. You enjoy getting right to the heart of matters. Your intellectual thrust is excited by the progressive, the novel concept or idea. Originality, individuality, and independence are all Aries qualities. In love you are ardent, passionate, impulsive, and idealistic. Your sign is constant and devoted as long as your partner makes you the center of the universe! Negatively, your sign may he stubborn, aggressive, egotistical, tending toward dominating others. Aries acts before thinking. No Aries ever enjoys being Number Two, and your desired position is at the front of the vanguard. In constructing, implementing, executing, and beginning, your energies invigorate whatever field of interest is encountered. Yours is a proud sign, and your productions are generally stamped with your own monogram. Aries never really grows old. Your sense of adventure, curiosity, enthusiasm, and need for variety keep you youthful. You have a definite need for outdoor exercise and recreational pleasures. You are a social creature, vital, popular, and generally right “up front” where you can be seen and heard.
TAURUS—April 20- May 20
Element: Earth   Quality: Fixed   Planet: Venus
Personal, Fixed, Earth. Reliable, materialistic, literalistic, practical.
Taurus is the conservator of the zodiac, maternal/paternal, protective, and nurturing. You are excellent in finishing what other signs begin. There is a basic relationship to the Earth, indicated by your natural ability to grow anything and your love of land, houses, gardening, and building. Taurus has an ability for practical investments into proven securities, such as government stocks and bonds, banking, and real estate. Your intellect is slow but sure, and while you take your time in making decisions, no one else can make you change your mind. Your mentality is thorough and practical. Love and emotional fulfillment are important to all Taureans; marriage, home, family, friends, and pets all come in for the pouring out of your affectionate temperament. You enjoy good food, warm sex, elegant clothes and furnishings, the more luxurious the better! Many Taureans have beautiful natural singing voices, play an instrument, or are born performers. You adore the entertainment and theatrical world. Most Taureans are handsome/beautiful, with a flair for the production of beauty combined with utility. Art galleries, museums, beauty parlors, elegant shops, luxury items, expensive equipment are all Taurus-oriented fields. Physically, you can be lazy, indulgent because of your love of good food, wines, and “goodies” in general. Once you decide on athletic goals, however, you buckle down and excel. Many of you need to take care regarding weight. Taurus can also be rigid, stubborn, with a dislike of any type of change. Your home base is an emotional necessity, and you take pride in its furnishings being as elegant as you can afford.
GEMINI—May 21 - June 20
Element: Air   Quality: Mutable   Planet: Mercury
Personal, Mutable, Air. Curious, impatient, talkative, changeable, insightful.
As you Geminis are the born communicators of the zodiac, you are fascinated by variety, changes of situations, events, and movement. Travel and the media are your bag! Radio, TV. publishing, lecturing, teaching, writing, and sales are all Gemini—oriented. Quick repartee arid a clever tongue are basic Gemini equipment. You are easily bored by routine and detail and have a need for change in all areas of your life. You enjoy knowing a “little bit, about a lot of things.” You adore dipping into subjects, picking out points you can adapt, then dropping the remainder of the data. This can carry through into your emotional life. You are a born flirt and Gemini is a natural bachelor sign. You are not a parenting type. but enjoy your offspring, when they begin to talk and think, as companions. Geminis are also likely to change jobs and generally have several employment interests in a lifetime. Anything connected with the public can be successful. Geminis make excellent agents, traveling lecturers and writers, news people, deal capably with electronic equipment, and use nimble fingers in creative-artistic products. Many of you are artists, designers, writers and composers, as well as humorists, entertainers, and public relations entrepreneurs. Geminis have a catlike ability to land on their feet in any type of situation, and to learn from it. Your nervous system becomes depleted when you try to keep too many bouncing balls going in the air, and you need a great deal of fresh air! outdoor recreation, and changes of pace.
CANCER—June 21 - July 22
Element: Water   Quality: Cardinal   Planet: Moo
Personal, Cardinal, Water. Intuitive, warm, supportive, sentimental, self-protective.
You Cancer Moon-Children are the nesters of the world, natural parents with a deep love of counseling, feeding, comforting, and protecting. There is also the converse tendency to overdo this quality, and some of you become permissive parents. You have a basic need “to be needed” and give off an aura of sympathy. Intellectually, you tend to fluctuate before making choices. First you retreat, then you turn left; then right; then finally ahead. Your mentality is deeply analytical and works well with detail. You need a home base, family, and friends to be happy. Your home is your retreat, your citadel, and safe haven. You love to entertain and are a warm, hospitable host/hostess. In love you are devoted, loyal, and empathetic. However, you can also be manipulative, possessive, with an inability to release the past. You may keep your children infantile and your family dependent. Because the Moon is your governing planet, you can be moody, despondent, and depressed, especially during the Moon’s full term. Cancers also tend to be overly sensitive and can brood and turn sullen over small, innocent remarks or actions. Because of your native love of earth and growing things, real estate, farms, children, pets, and houses are successful fields for your talents. Cancer also is connected with water-oriented subjects, such as import-export, fluids, alcohol, oil, petroleum, as well as resort hotels, catering, and services. Cancers are also creative, with emphasis upon composing, writing, playing an instrument, acting, and design. You have a gut-level “knowing” psychic ability which you should trust.
LEO—July 23 - August 22
Element: Fire   Quality: Fixed   Planet: Sun
Interpersonal, Fixed, Fire. Flamboyant, self-expressive, creative, self-aggrandizing.
Leo is the King/Queen syndrome. All Leos enjoy starting at the top! You have the ability to make others enthusiastic, to stimulate people, and are a born actor/actress. Leo governs the entertainment and theatrical fields, and members of this sign adore the limelight. Intellectually, you are direct, forceful, and demanding. Leos are ambitious, making excellent political and military leaders, government executives, teachers, sales people, lawyers, and doctors. As Leo is not only a Fire sign, but a Fixed sign, you can also be stubborn, rigid, and demanding. It will be your way—or else! You love Romance with a capital R. All of the accouterments, such as candlelight, flowers, music, arid wine, appeal to your emotional temperament. However, there is a basic need in Leos to be proud of their love. You are passionate, can be jealous, eager to possess and dominate. As Leo governs the heart, your emotions are quickly moved by those in distress. and you work successfully for the underprivileged, children, the elderly. and animals. You will wear yourself out for those you love. Groups associated with benevolent and charitable/loving goals can offer you outlets for your strong love nature and broad, generous outlook. As you basically feel the world is your oyster, it may be difficult for you to deal with only one love. Although Leos demand loyalty and devotion and being the only one, you find it almost impossible to play the same game. Leos adore admiration and need public recognition and constant patting.
Virgo—August 23 - September 22
Element: Earth   Quality: Mutable   Planet:  Mercury/Vulcan
Interpersonal, Mutable, Earth. Discriminating, picky, perfectionist, efficient.
Vulcan is the Artisan of the perfect product, and you Virgos have an inward picture of this perfection you find difficult to materialize. This irritant helps explain your constant search for that “perfect” product. Like Diogenes looking for the honest individual, Virgo seeks the perfect person, job, situation, and lifestyle. Virgo has historically been confused with the word Virgin. Actually, Virgo is the Earth Mother. The male Virgo contains much of the sensitivity and artistic creativity of what the Western World terms “female.” The Virgo man has sensitivity, a discretion, and sense of discrimination which tones down the arrogance of the macho type. The intellect of your sign is like a strong ray, analyzing, criticizing, researching, and investigating minute details. The elegant, and practical products of Paris and Switzerland, finely and “perfectly” materialized for sale, are symbolized by Virgo vibrations. Romantically, this same desire for the best continues. Companionship on many levels is a Virgo emotional demand, and physical union combines with intellectual communication. You Virgos are slow to make a romantic relationship, but once you do, generally it is enduring and lifelong. This also is a bachelor sign, so many of you are happily unmarried. Virgos have a natural talent for saving and investing money in practical, proven areas. Real estate, houses, commercial buildings, bonds, machinery, laboratories, and corporations all appeal to this strong Earth sign. Virgo types find success in the production of beautiful and usable objects. art galleries, libraries, research and investigative  laboratories, and health food outlets. The Virgo philosophy must also appeal to the intellect, to the eye and senses as well, and “make sense.”
LIBRA—September 23 - October 22
Element: Air   Quality: Cardinal   Planet: Venus
Interpersonal, Cardinal, Air. Graceful, balanced, partnership-oriented.
Libra has generally been called the “Sign of Balance.” Actually, Librans are seeking balance. The symbol of the scales depicts your constant weighing of data before reaching conclusions. You Librans also have an emotional desire for relationships, for a love partner who will help make your world for you. Part of the Libra challenge is to learn to be individually and independently oriented. Libra is always “in love with love,” putting your pattern on whoever happens to be near! Marriage is another subject. You Librans are not natural physical or emotional parents, and prefer to deal with your children as people and friends.
Both female and male members of your sign dislike mess, dirt and disorder, noise and confusion, so that the average family lifestyle basically holds little appeal for you. Intellectually, Libra is connected with beauty, the arts, music, design, law, and counseling. The entertainment world appeals to you, as you need public approval and lots of admiration. You tend to see yourself in the eyes of others. Librans can be self-indulgent, lazy, jealous, envious, and indecisive. Because you have a need for surface harmony and a pleasant environment, you often bury what you really hate beneath the surface. Being the sign of relationships, Libra needs to extend that duality outward into larger and more varied groups. Hiding in that comfortable tower won’t bring maturity.
SCORPIO—October 23 - November 21
Element: Water   Quality: Fixed   Planet: Pluto
Interpersonal, Fixed, Water. Obsessive, magnetic, emotionally and psychically powerful.
Scorpio is the All or Nothing vibration. You give it everything you have—or you do not go at all. You Scorpios have a deep need to be devoted to an idea, a philosophy, a belief, or a person. Otherwise, your intense energies deteriorate into excesses in negative fields. Intellectually, your mind is sharp, keen, and razor-edged. Analysis, facts, data, and personal research are all merged before you make a decision or choice. You are also a Fixed sign, giving determination, endurance, as well as stubbornness and rigidity of outlook. You have a deep desire for leadership, to be the executive and the one in charge. It is hard for you to take orders; your natural reaction is to give them! Scorpio governs the sexual organs and the genitals, but this does not especially highlight your love life. You are ardent, swift to fulfill your physical needs, passionate and fiery in romance. You tend to dominate those you love, while you yourself demand freedom and a totally different set of rules. Scorpios of both sexes may be manipulative, jealous, resentful. and sarcastic when crossed. As this sign governs the subconscious mind, dream symbols, what lies beneath the earth and oceans, there are numerous and varied areas for successful implementation of your talents. Scorpio rules the investigative agencies, such as detective organizations. Fluids, oil, minerals, petroleum, medical research, government and military positions all come under the Scorpio umbrella. Scorpios are also creative and artistic: painters, dancers, writers, composers, and explorers. Your tenacity and passion for achievement when pointed toward constructive goals bring you recognition.
SAGITTARIUS—November 22 - December 21
Element: Fire   Quality: Mutable   Planet: Jupiter
Extrapersonal, Mutable, Fire. Expansive, philosophical, salesman, teacher.
Sagittarius is the traveler of the zodiac, traveling into all fields which are new and interesting. You are the natural student-teacher who remains youthful because of your constantly questioning mind and your active body. You enjoy communicating information which has stimulated you so that teaching. writing, lecturing, publishing, and acting are all natural fields for success. Intellectually, you want direct, clear facts—and you want them now. You have the ability to cut away the fat from data, presenting it with humor and clarity to others. Exploring, ranging over the world, meeting people with varied backgrounds, touching all those “wet paint” signs appeals to you. Romantically, you are old-fashioned and sentimental, although your surface personality may appear very modern to others. Sagittarius women demand intellectual freedom and liberty, as well as a very long leash, physically and emotionally. Given independence, you generally do not stray too far from home. Not given it—you are gone. Sagittarius men take for granted that freedom. and are amazed should disputes arise. The fastest way to end a Sagittarius relationship is to show the leash and rope! They give generously and abundantly, but not when it is demanded. Sagittarius women are naturally well built, healthy, and active, appearing independent, strong, and loving. Sagittarius men enjoy outdoor recreation, fun, and travel. Your sign will be young forever, as long as the exhilaration and stimulation of the unexplored is a potential.
CAPRICORN—December 22 - January 19
Element: Earth    Quality: Cardinal    Planet: Saturn
Extrapersonal, Cardinal, Earth. Integrity, structure, rigidity, organizational, impersonal.
Capricorn is concerned with the past, conserving, and restoring. You have a particular talent for “making do,” for refurbishing and recycling. There is a certain Machiavellian aspect of your sign which is clever, persistent, and ambitious. Endurance and patience are also Capricorn traits. Mentally, you have a fine ability for research, investigation, and critical analysis. Like Virgo, you enjoy dissecting formulas, ideas, finances, and any special area which interests you. There is a strange aura of occult ability surrounding your sign, and you often attempt to integrate this inner ‘knowing” with your outer senses. Capricorn women are not natural homemakers. preferring a career, financial independence, and hiring others to do the cleaning-up. Male Capricorns enjoy executive positions, are ambitious and persistent. In romance, you are cautious and reserved in expressing emotions. Both male and female Capricorns adore power even in the romantic arena. Capricorns act, show, and do rather than say, promise, or hug. Capricorns need to have pride in their loved ones, and can be demanding of their energies and affections. Yours is a long-lived sign and you often have several careers. Museums, historical monuments, writing, art galleries, antique shops, costuming, and working with theater in practical ways are all Capricorn-oriented. Banking, insurance, health, investigation, medical laboratories, detective agencies, and government investigative organizations appeal to you.
AQUARIUS—January 20 - February 18
Element: Air   Quality: Fixed   Planet: Uranus
Extrapersonal, Fixed, Air. Idealistic, revolutionary, fanatical, inventive, iconoclastic, futuristic.
Aquarius is the madcap of the zodiac, alternating between caring for all humankind, creating innovative yet practical products, and stimulating untried concepts and techniques—and being unreliable, selfish of time, money, and emotion, and irresponsible. Intellectually, you are brilliant, yet stupid when it comes to practical daily affairs. Generally this is due to a lack of interest. Your mind is on something else by the time the problem has been explained. Basically, the short attention span of Aquarius is only your flight into new and unexplored areas while other signs are still far behind you. You are the inventor, the explorer, good at beginnings, terrible at finishing. An idea person, with brilliant flashes of insight, then dropping all the details where they may land. Romantically, you fall into the same pattern. As long as your partner stimulates your intellect, you are the original Funny Valentine. Aquarians are seldom “turned on” by mere physical charms but demand mental fascination. You can be stubborn, rigid, resistant to change or anything new unless it fits into your own inner picture. Reaching out to assist humankind, Aquarians may not see the needs right under their noses in personal family situations. Aquarian men can be sweetly romantic, once their attention is captured. Aquarian women have so many irons in the fire that they too can be emotionally fired up, but with both sexes, don’t expect the attention to last long. It is an intellectual sign, not a physical one. Aquarians are generally right in the foreground, leading the parade, exploring the untried and shouting back to the rest of us to hurry up!
PISCES—February 19 - March 20
Element: Water    Quality: Mutable    Planet: Neptune
Extrapersonal, Mutable, Water. Imaginative, escapist, sensitive, devotional.
Pisces is a complex sign. You are a charming sign, nurturing, sympathetic, and fun. You can also be a pain to others, depending on them to make your choices and decisions. Pisces is a strong sign— when everyone walks away and leaves you, you come out swinging and your basic strength is then apparent. Intellectually, you have sufficient patience and detail ability for research, handsome creative products, painting, design, playing an instrument, writing, and acting. Pisces is a natural healer, dealing with emotional problems with great success. In romance. you Pisces are the original hearts and flowers people. Pisces women are old-fashioned, sentimental, loving poetry, flowers, music and romantic novels. You Pisces males have a gentle tenderness about you in love, a sensitivity and warmth which protects and nurtures. Often you Pisces fall in love with someone much older than you with success. You are a natural psychic. You have a gut-level intuitive knowing which you should follow. Your dreams and hunches are usually helpful. Once you take the reins into your own hands and stop checking in with your loved ones for every decision, your ambitions and goals are easily achieved. You can be passively stubborn, manipulative, secretive, and self-oriented. However, your natural sweetness, desire to give and receive affection, helping those in distress, whether two- or four-footed, keep you an important part of our lives.

Through disintegration, old, worn out, useless and crystallized forms are destroyed so new, better, more beautiful, useful and adaptable forms may replace them.
Through experience, patience, persistence, self-discipline we can change the negative Saturn qualities of skepticism, fear, suppression, materiality and self-preservation into confidence, dependability, humility, reverence, wisdom and compassion.

URANUS
CREATIVITY, CHANGE, PROGRESS, UNEXPECTED, THE AWAKENER
As the discovery of Uranus changed the old planetary pattern and concepts, so Uranus brings changes into our lives today. The unexpected, unusual, adventure, spectacular, sometimes even catastrophies.
People with Uranus strong, angular (especially in the 1st or 10th house) are highly individualized, live in the present and/or future; are interested in new things and developments, science, astrology, metaphysics, occultism, They are creative, must have self-expression, sometimes are discontented, have inner tensions. They often need a hobby to express their creativity and use their energy constructively.
Being a show moving planet, Uranus’ house position is very important as it stays in a sign 7 years but goes through all the houses every day.
Even with benefic aspects, the changes are often disruptive. But the final result is much more favorable than changes made during afflictions.
Being a ‘higher octave’ planet, the difference between reason and feeling is not so sharply defined. Expressed through Uranus, they often blend and support each other. This is evidenced by the fact that some astrologers say Uranus is the higher octave of Mercury, while others say it is the higher octave of Venus.
As Uranus is invisible to the physical eyes, so we must use our ‘inner perception’ to truly respond to its higher vibrations. Only then does Uranus bring about the inner Awakening.
BASIC--The Awakener, altruism, inventiveness, originality, sudden action, unconventionality, independent, nonconformist, original, inventive, unconventional, altruistic, idealistic, reformer, metaphysics, occultism, friendly, restless, impulsive, assertive, adventuresome, change, mental
POSITIVE--progressiveness, universality, universal love of humanity, impersonality, independence, love of liberty, romance, intuition, unbiased, non-sectarian, progressive, ingenious, platonic love, humanitarian, universal love, pioneer, intuition, clairvoyance, resourceful, impersonal, love liberty, strong-willed, improvement, scientific
NEGATIVE--eccentricity, spasmodic action, bohemianism, fanaticism, irresponsibility, licentiousness, anarchy, abrupt, rebellious, radical, visionary, licentious, impractical, indiscreet, dictator, eccentricity, perversion, bohemian, vagabond, irresponsible, fanatical, erratic, disruption, tension
NEPTUNE
SENSITIVITY, DIVINITY, DECEPTION. SUPERPHYSICAL ENTITIES
'The brightest light casts the deepest shadow”
Neptune reaches both the most sublime heights and the lowest depths.
When Neptune is very strong in the chart, the native is very sensitive, secretive, and often dislikes the hard world of reality. They sometimes seek temporary escape by living in a dream world of their own creation, filled with dreams, visions, shadows, fantasy, the exotic and bizarre, tenderness, romance and glamour, and they dislike the awakening back to reality. To them, the unreal seems real and the real seems unreal. They often feel the normal things of life are too commonplace, they seek something more stimulating or sensational. Neptune is the great masquerader.
The positive aspects of Neptune show wisdom beyond reason, genius, creative ability in the literary, poetic and musical fields, intuition, clairvoyance, contact with the higher invisible realms, the realization of the Unity of all life. Not everybody can respond fully to the higher vibrations of Neptune.
When afflicted, Neptune cloaks the issue with vagueness, obscurity, elusion, confusion, misunderstanding, intrigue and fraudulent appearances. The worst afflictions of Neptune indicate fearfulness, morbidity, introversion, sensuality, indulgence and obsession.
From the health standpoint Neptune sensitizes the organs, functions and the body. Afflicted it shows a hypersensitive, unhealthy and abnormal organ or function, and a deceptive condition which is extremely hard to diagnose correctly.
Being so slow in motion, Neptune’s house placement is very important, It stays in a sign 14 years but goes through all the houses every day.
BASIC--superphysical entities of all degrees and impressions from them, divinity, occultism, knowledge from sources above reason, viz., superphysical beings, idealistic, impressionable, sensitive, responsive, emotional, subtle, abstract, fanciful, metaphysical, spirits, psychic, creative, musical
POSITIVE--spirituality, intuition, inspiration, prophecy, devotion, music, divinity, inspirational, sympathetic, compassionate, devoted, imaginative, reverence, poetic, mystic, clairvoyance, knowing, genius
NEGATIVE--delusions, chaotic mental conditions, morbidity, fraud, incoherence, deception, dishonesty, mediumship, dreamy, fearful, negativeness, self-indulgence, immoral, intrigue, pretensions, fantasy, black magic, delusion, chaotic
PLUTO
TRANSFORMER, TRANSITION, DICTATOR, COERCION
'The greater the sinner the greater the saint'.
We still have much to learn about Pluto. He seems to combine the natures of Mars and Neptune, and obviously is the higher octave of Mars. Following the planetary rulership pattern, Pluto’s positive sign is Aries and his negative sign is Scorpio.
Pluto’s influence is not of a milk-and-water nature, but rather drastic. Even its good aspects do not bring peace and quiet, tranquility of mind or circumstance; but stepped-up activity, depending upon the planet and aspect involved. Ii is easier to respond to his lower vibrations than to his highly attenuated positive vibrations.
In mythology, Pluto was the ruler of the underworld and the first kidnapper. Pluto’s discovery announcement on March 12, 1930 came during a wave of kidnapping in the United States. At this time we were in the great depression. Dictators emerged, racketeering. gangsters and the underworld became very powerful. We have had many instances of huge mass activities; labor strikes have involved larger masses of workers: we have mass production in industry; as a result of wars and dictators there have been many mass migrations of peoples in various parts of the world. There has been much regimentation in thinking by nations.
As Uranus and Neptune awaken extra sensory perception and bring man into contact with the invisible planes, Pluto carries this just one step further. Since 1930 interest in metaphysics and occultism is more widespread than ever before. There has been scientific research into ESP. hypnotism is being used by doctors and psychiatrists.
As the last 30 years have been a transition period in the world, so Pluto brings transition into our individual lives, depending upon the sign, house and aspects. Progressive change, rejuvenation, transformation, death, forceful coercion; all are typical Pluto activities; bringing up new situations, energies and powers that we ultimately must learn to master and use constructively. Our chemists are making many new synthetic products. we are entering the Space Age, we hear more about flying saucers.
A very strong Pluto in a chart generally indicates an outstanding individual: one who breaks precedents, a non-conformist (like Pluto’s orbit), one who brings new developments into the field in which he is active.
BASIC--renewing, enlivening, breaking open, germinating, erupting, reorganizing, provoking, transition, reorganization, intensification, group activity, force, invisible planes, alchemy, extra sensory perception
POSITIVE--regeneration, transmutation, revivification, motivation to strive for spiritual power, positive transformation, rejuvenation, revitalization, spirituality, universal welfare, positive clairvoyance
NEGATIVE--force, defiance, death, destruction, fanaticism, struggle, sensuality, regimentation, underworld, black magic, decomposition, recklessness, inversion, lawlessness, atrocities

The Planets
THE SUN  indicates the psychological bias which will dominate your actions. What you see, and why, you are told in the reading for your Sun. The Sun also shows the basic energy patterns of your body arid psyche. In many ways the Sun is the dominant force in your horoscope and your life. Other influences, especially that of the Moon, may modify the Sun’s influence, but nothing will cause you to depart very far from the basic solar pattern. For this reason, a whole literature and a whole business have grown up around Sun sign astrology, and many people exist who think there is nothing more to the horoscope than knowing what sign you were born in and what the Sun in that sign means. This is a mistake, as you will discover when you have read the influence of the other bodies. But, throughout your other readings, keep in mind always the basic influence of the Sun and remember all other influences must be interpreted in terms of it, especially insofar as other influences play a visible role in your life. You may think, dream. imagine, hope to a thousand things, according to your Moon and your other planets, but the Sun is what you are, and to be your best self in terms of your Sun is to cause your energies to work along the path in which they will have maximum help from planetary vibrations.
THE MOON tells the desire of your life. When you “know what you mean but can’t say it,” it is your Moon that knows it and your Sun that can’t say it. “Thoughts that do often lie too deep for tears” are the thoughts of your Moon’s nature. The wordless ecstasy, the mute sorrow, the secret dream, the esoteric picture of yourself that you can’t get across to the world, or which the world doesn’t comprehend or value—these are the products of the Moon in your horoscope. When you are misunderstood. it is your Moon nature, expressed imperfectly through the Sun sign, that you feel betrayed. When you know what you ought to do, but can’t find the right way to do it, it is your Moon that knows and your Sun that refuses to react in harmony. Also, when you “don’t know why I said that,” it was your Moon expressing despite your Sun (if you are inwardly satisfied with the involuntary speech), or the Sun expressing itself against the will of the Moon (if you are displeased with what slipped out). Things you know without thought—intuitions, hunches, instincts—are the products of the Moon. Modes of expression that you feel truly reflect your deepest self belong to the Moon: art, letters, creative work of any kind; sometimes love; sometimes business. Whatever you feel is most deeply yourself, whether or not you are able to do anything about it in the outer world, is the product of your Moon and of the sign your Moon occupies at birth.
MERCURY is the sense-impression antenna of your horoscope. Its position by sign indicates your reactions to sights, sounds, odors, tastes, and touch impressions, affording a key to the attitude you have toward the physical world around you. Mercury is the messenger through which your physical body and brain (the Sun) and your inner nature (the Moon) are kept in contact with the outer world, which will appear to you according to the index of Mercury’s position by sign in the horoscope. Mercury rules your rational mind.
VENUS is the emotional antenna of your horoscope. Through Venus, impressions come to you from the outer world because of which you feel and react emotionally. The position of Venus by sign at the time of your birth gives the key to your attitude toward these emotional experiences. As Mercury is the messenger linking sense impressions (sight. smell. etc.) to the basic nature of your Sun and Moon, so Venus is the messenger linking emotional impressions. If Venus is found in the same sign with the Sun, emotions gain importance in your life, having a direct bearing on your actions and generally causing you to put your best foot forward. If Venus is in the same sign with the Moon, emotions also gain importance, bearing directly on your inner nature, adding self-confidence, making you sensitive to emotional impressions and frequently indicating you have more love in your heart than you are able to express. If Venus is in the same sign with Mercury. emotional impressions and sense impressions work together; you tend to idealize the world of the senses and sensualize the world of the emotions; to interpret emotionally what you see and hear; and perhaps through this you become proficient in one of the arts.
MARS is the energy principle in the horoscope. Its position by sign indicates the channels into which energy will most easily be directed. It is the planet through which the activities of the Sun and the desires of the Moon express themselves in action—through which your body and your mind react to the sense impressions of Mercury and the emotional impressions of Venus. In the same sign with the Sun, Mars gives abundant energy, sometimes misdirected in temper, temperament, and quarrels; in the same sign with the Moon it gives a great capacity to make use of the innermost aims, and to make the inner desires articulate and practical; in the same sign with Venus it quickens emotional reactions and causes you to act on them, makes for ardor and passion in love, and fosters an earthly awareness of emotional realities.
JUPITER is the feeler you have out in the world for opportunity. Through it the chances of a lifetime are passed along for consideration according to the basic nature of your Sun and Moon. Jupiter’s sign position indicates the places in which you will look for opportunity, the uses to which you wish to put it, and the capacity you have to react and profit by it. Jupiter is ordinarily, and erroneously, called the Planet of Luck. It is “luck” insofar as it is the index of opportunity, but your luck depends less on what comes to you (Jupiter) than on what you do with it (the total personality). Opportunity appears to you along lines laid down by your Jupiter. In the same sign with the Sun or Moon, Jupiter gives a direct and generally effective response to opportunity and is likely to show forth at its “luckiest.” If Jupiter is in the same sign with Mercury, sense impressions are interpreted opportunistically—what you see and hear is grist to your mill; this also makes for considerable stubbornness and hardheadedness. If Jupiter is in the same sign with Venus, you interpret emotions in such a way as to turn them to your advantage; your feelings work harmoniously with the chances for progress that the world has to offer, and you won’t often be found torn between love and a career. If Jupiter is in the same sign with Mars, you follow opportunity with energy, dash, enthusiasm and courage, take long chances, and play your cards wide open.
SATURN indicates the direction that will be taken in life by the self-preservative principle which, in its highest manifestation, ceases to he purely defensive and becomes ambitious and aspirational. Your defense or attack against the world is shown by the sign position of Saturn in the horoscope of birth. If Saturn is in the same sign with the Sun or Moon, defense predominates, and there is danger of introversion. The further Saturn is from the Sun, Moon, and Ascendant, the better for objectivity and extroversion. if Saturn is in the same sign with Mercury, there is a profound and serious reaction to sense impressions; this position generally accompanies a deep and efficient. mind. If Saturn is in the same sign with Venus, a defensive attitude toward emotional experience makes for apparent coolness in love and difficulty with the emotions and human relations: a conservative approach in finance; generally a “Lucky-in-cards-unlucky-in-love” position. If Saturn is in the same sign with Mars, confusion between defensive and aggressive urges can make an indecisive person—or. if the Sun and Moon are strong and the total personality well-developed, a balanced, peaceful, and calm individual of sober judgment and moderate actions may be indicated. If Saturn is in the same sign with Jupiter, the reaction to opportunity is solid and balanced.
URANUS in a general way relates to the neuro-mentality, the creative originality or individuality, and its position by sign in the horoscope tells the direction along which you will seek to express your most characteristic self in creative and original effort. In the same sign with Mercury or the Moon, Uranus suggests acute awareness, a quick reaction to sense impressions and experience; a hair-trigger mind. In the same sign with the Sun, ii points to great nervous activity, a high-strung nature, an original, creative, or eccentric personality. In the same sign with Mars, Uranus indicates high-speed activity, love of swift motion, and perhaps of danger. In the same sign with Venus, it suggests an unusual reaction to emotional experience, highly idealistic though sensual, original ideas of love and human relations. In the same sign with Saturn, Uranus points to good sense, lending experience to original ideas; this can be a practical-creative position, but, more often than not, it sets up a destroying conflict between practicality and originality that can result in a stalemate. In the same sign with Jupiter, Uranus makes opportunity, creates wealth and the means of getting it, and is conducive to the inventive, daring, and executive.
NEPTUNE relates to the deepest wells of the subconscious, inherited mentality and spirituality, indicating what you take deeply for granted in life. Neptune in the same sign with the Sun or Moon indicates that intuitions and hunches-or delusions—dominate; there is a need for rigidly holding to reality. In the same sign with Mercury, sharp sense perceptions, a sensitive mind, perhaps creative, a quivering intensity —of reaction to sense experience. In the same sign with Venus, idealistic and romantic (or sentimental) reaction to emotional experience; danger of sensationalism and love of strange pleasures. In the same sign with Mars, energy and intuition that work together to make mastery of life—one of the signs of having angels (or devils) on your side. In the same sign with Jupiter, intuitive response to opportunity generally along practical and moneymaking lines; one of the signs of security if not indeed of wealth. in the same sign with Saturn, intuitive defense and attack on the world, generally successful unless Saturn is polarized on the negative side; then, danger of delusions and unhappiness.
PLUTO is a planet of extremes—from the lowest criminal and violent level of our society to the heights a person can attain when s/he realizes his/her significance in the collectivity of man. Pluto also rules three important mysteries of life—sex, death, and rebirth—and links them to each other. In sex, Pluto symbolizes the egg and sperm joining to make a new life. One level of death symbolized by Pluto is the physical death of an individual which occurs so that s/he can be reborn into another body to further his/her spiritual development. On another level, an individual can experience a “death” of his/her old self when s/he realizes the deeper significance of life; s/he thus becomes one of the “second born.” In a natal horoscope, Pluto signifies our perspective on the world, our conscience and subconscious. Since so many of Pluto’s qualities are centered on the deeper mysteries of life, the house position of Pluto and aspects to it can show you how to attain a deeper understanding of the importance of the spiritual in your life.

Transits and Aspects
Aspects are the angles formed between two planets in the sky. Transits are angles formed between a planet as it is now in the sky and the position of a planet sometime in the past, as it is recorded in a horoscope. Thus, a planet can transit its own former position or the former position of another planet.
Aspects indicate current relationships between planets, and transits indicate the influence of present conditions on something established in the past. In defining the meaning of aspects and transits, we can speak of them together because the interpretations are similar and can be modified by the reader to fit the conditions.
The major aspects included in Lleweliyn’s Daily Planetary Guide are the conjunction (0 degrees), the semi-sextile (30 degrees), the semisquare (45 degrees), the sextile (60 degrees), the square (90 degrees), the trine (120 degrees), the sesquiquadrate (135 degrees), the quincunx or inconjunct (150 degrees), and the opposition (180 degrees). In general, those aspects based on a division of the circle by multiples of two are considered the most important, largely because they signify difficulties in relationships and hence are most noticeable. Also of significance is the lesser known quincunx. The conjunction, because it signifies the joining together of two different energies, is also very noticeable.
The aspects are roughly divided into two groups, depending on the ease with which humans can deal with the energy involved. The semnisquare, square, quincunx, sesquiquadrate, and opposition are called the difficult or “unfavorable” aspects. The semi-sextile, sextile, and trine are called the “easy” or “favorable” aspects. However, these names have nothing to do with the inherent energy of the aspects themselves, and are just valuations from our perspective.
CONJUNCTION (O°)—When two planets are close to each other (7° for the planets, 12° if the Sun or Moon are involved—these are only rough approximations), the energy of the two planets combine. When the planets are very ciose together (within a half of a degree), they converge to such an extent that the separate energies of each become indistinguishable. The simplicity of this aspect makes it the easiest to understand. However, one should note the differences between the meanings of the planets involved to really appreciate the effect of a conjunction. If the planets are rather opposite in character (like Mars and Venus), if one of them is particularly demanding (like Saturn), or if any of the outer planets (Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto) conjoin the personal, inner planets (Mercury, Venus, and Mars), we will have a combination of energy which will be so out of the ordinary that it will produce distinctive effects, possibly unpleasant ones, although this depends on their reception by humans.
SEMI-SEXTILE (30°)—Two planets semi-sextile to each other will support one another in a very external sense, but will not share any true inner attainment.
SEMI-SQUARE (45°)—This aspect denotes a minor irritation. somewhat like the 90° angle (square) but with less awareness or concern. Many astrologers use this in personal astrology but it should be noted that it can play a major role in mundane work. (It is a good tool for researchers.)
SEXTILE (60°)—This aspect gives a communication, that is, exchange of understanding, between two planets. However, this interaction is generally not potent enough to contribute significantly to the work of either planet.
SQUARE (90°)—In this aspect the two planets fight against one another, with each trying to get the upper hand, trying to make the other conform to its mode of operation. The fight is continual and can only be overcome, not by favoring one side or the other—as we so often do—but by accepting the claims of each and identifying with a higher truth and unity. In this way we accept ourselves (if the aspect is in our natal horoscope) or our challenge from the outside world (if it is a transit) and allow for the true expression of these energies—conflicting, yes, but each valid in its own particular way.
TRINE (120°)—This is the most important of the favorable aspects in that the two planets, rather than merely supporting or communing with each other (semi-sextile and sextile), now share a similarity of purpose. By this we mean they help each other to accomplish their tasks. However, the trine is less often noticed than the square or opposition, probably because people don’t count their blessings as often as their curses.
SESQUIQUADRATE (135°)—This aspect is a combination of the square (90°) and the semi-square (45°) and denotes the area of the chart in which there is a conscious need to take action…a strong need to express oneself in activity and to make decisions.
QUINCUNX (150°)—(Also called “inconjunct.”) Of all the aspects this is probably the least understood, but the most influential in terms of raising havoc, and perhaps the most interesting. Its effect is not as noticeable as the other major “unfavorable” aspects (square and opposition), but this just makes its effects all the more difficult to deal with.
When a quincunx occurs between two planets, it signifies that there is a slight disharmony between the planets which the conscious mind does not grasp. In fact, the conscious mind assumes that an uplifting integration of the forces of the two planets is not only possible, but just around the corner.
This makes the quincunx the aspect of false hopes and aspirations, and expressions which are slightly “off the mark.” Often the person experiencing the quincunx feels as if he or she almost has some problem taken care of, and yet the solution continually slips away. If the problem is externalized, so that the person thinks that it is some problem in the environment which s/he is almost ready to assimilate or correct, then it becomes particularly grating to those around him/her. If the problem remains internal, the individual will be continually frustrated and deceived by false hopes and aspirations.
The solution to this problem is harder than it would first appear. It does not require just becoming conscious of the unconscious assumption to correct it—this alone is hard enough to do—but then allowing the planets to manifest in their slightly, although distinctly, disharmonious manner.
When this lesson is learned, the quincunxial person will be found to be most fascinating and paradoxical to be around. However, this seldom happens. It appears to be most difficult to become aware of misdirected hopes and aspirations, but it is by these means that people attempt to uplift themselves. These are often our deepest unconscious assumptions.
OPPOSITION (180°)—While the square produces a quarrel, and the quincunx an unconscious misdirection, the opposition produces a stand-off, a stalemate that is only relieved by compromise. The two planets in opposition each desire to operate in their own fashion and cannot conjoin in expression. The only solution for this is to allow each to have its turn, reassuring the other that its time will soon come, and to once again identify with a higher truth than that found in strife and opposition.

Transits and Aspects to Planets
SUN—When there are transits to the Sun in a birth chart or from the Sun in the sky, the key words are vitality and will. Your Sun sign is also how you “impress” others because it’s where you feel the most sure of yourself. One of the most important times of the year is when the Sun is traveling through your own Sun sign. This is the beginning of the new year for you. When the transiting Sun is two or four signs from your Sun, you can either rest on your laurels or push for what you want; you are now more likely to make a good impression and a lot of progress. The times when the Sun is either three signs or six signs away from your Sun can indicate two things:
• You are too willful and/or run into people who are boastful and willful. • You are able, however, to make important decisions and stick to them by putting out extra effort and energy.
You automatically feel a tension when these times occur. During easier times, you must consciously “push” yourself because of your tendency to be lazy.
MOON—The study of the New Moons, Full Moons, and eclipses helps you know when to begin and end projects. The New Moon means the Sun and Moon are in conjunction (together in the same degree and sign of the zodiac). This is the beginning of a cycle and indicates one project ends so that another can start. The New Moon also indicates the beginning of a new phase of an old project. With the Full Moon, the Sun and Moon are 180 degrees (or six signs) apart. You feel a conscious awareness concerning these same projects. ‘The Full Moon also indicates endings because you get the full view of something and decide to drop it. If these Full Moons are also eclipses, the emphasis is stronger and can last from six months to a year.
MERCURY—Transits and aspects always relate to communications, thinking, and learning. If Mercury is involved with other planets in squares or oppositions, there is a tendency toward misunderstanding, confusion, and excessive worry. When Mercury is in an easy aspect, you can communicate more easily so that you will be understood more readily. Remember, Mercury is not only associated with being the “messenger of ihe gods,” but it is also associated with “thieves.” Thus, Mercury aspects also contain a little of the con artist, promising more than you can deliver. Be cautious when you see these possibilities.
When Mercury goes retrograde it changes the way you and others communicate. You are more likely to communicate about deeper, more subconscious things in your life. You think first, then communicate. It is a time when communications are delayed or not clearly understood. Be cautious during retrograde periods of Mercury about papers you sign because something may be missing. Mercury retrograde also can indicate changes of mind, so if you make major decisions or purchases during this time, beware, because you may change your mind later and feel some regrets. Usually Mercury retrograde has a stronger effect on Geminis or Virgos because it is their ruling planet.
VENUS—Venus, along with Mercury, is never far away from the Sun, just as thinking (Mercury) and your values (Venus) are never far removed from yourself (the Sun). When Venus is emphasized in transits, values, money, and social life are activated. Venus brings with it whatever you value, whether it is money, romance, travel, new clothes, or more freedom. When the aspects to or from Venus are easy, life is smooth and without worry. It is also a time when you see beauty in all things. However, when the aspects are the squares or oppositions, there is more tension involved in spending; your socializing is more forced, you do not feel attractive, and you spend money on new clothes to feel better.
Venus retrograde is a time when you are attracted to bizarre things. It is also a time when money is delayed or your social and romantic life doesn’t go as planned.
MARS—Initiative, aggression, energy, and sexuality are associated with the planet Mars. If Mars is aspecting a planet in your birth chart, it will energize what that planet means to you. Mars energy is impulsive if you don’t structure it. Mars energy is likely to get you into trouble because it makes you act aggressively. You don’t want to take no for an answer. It does, however, indicate those times when you have extra courage and daring if you need it. When Mars is connected to planets by squares, conjunctions, or oppositions, expect a strong ego thrust either coming from you or to you from others. These are the times to watch your temper and your sexual drives because they can be difficult for people around you to cope with. When Mars is associated by sextiles or trines, you are very confident as you use your initiative to further your goals. People now accept your ego and energy more easily. Mars in your birth chart indicates when you are aggravated and when you aggravate others.
Mars retrograde is an indication of energy impact before it is released. Projects are best planned during these times, and then begun when the planet is direct in motion again. Mars retrograde is not the time to begin a physical relationship with someone; nor is it a time to take chances with machinery or vehicles.
JUPITER—Jupiter represents opportunities, optimism, and expansion. By transit, you can expect this type of energy from the “Emperor of Planets.” With all the aspects of Jupiter, it is wise to be a little conservative to prevent overabundance.
With Jupiter, you expect more than you receive; you are able to exaggerate almost anything under a Jupiter transit. Jupiter works better on the spiritual, mental, and philosophical levels because its orientation is to abstract learning on a higher level. In the material world, it can bring you too much of a good thing—overeating, overweight, overconfidence, etc.
Jupiter. on the other hand, brings luck and rewards so that if there are aspects of Jupiter working along with aspects of Saturn, the timer, there are bound to be good results. Saturn and Jupiter work hand in hand to bring you what you have worked and hoped for.
SATURN—The planet of ambition and structure demands discipline and realism, which with the right attitude (Jupiter) you gain your rewards. Saturn transits are anything but fun, but they are necessary for achievement in your life. Saturn is the world telling you what you must do, and also what you must give up in order to gain what you really want. Saturn narrows your path during its transits; you aren’t so distracted by unnecessary things along the way to your self-fulfillment.
Saturn affects man-made, consciously planned activities. It, along with Uranus, is the builder of the zodiac. Every time Saturn aspects another planet, we can expect that the area of life signified by that planet will receive much conscious attention from social institutions and authorities. The area of life will undergo challenges and tests which will require the conscious effort of people for improvement to occur.
URANUS—Uranus is associated with sudden, unpredictable changes. However, seen from a higher viewpoint which encompasses the reality of the spiritual worlds, we can see that what appears to be sudden to us, with our limited physical perception, is actually the logical consequence of actions taken or dictated from a higher realm. It is through Uranus that higher energy can be channeled into the world. This energy has the capacity to make earthly events conform to its own nature.
Transits and aspects of Uranus should be watched for these sudden changes. Whatever planet or sign is involved will show the areas of life which are to be dramatically transformed in this way.
Uranus, when transiting by square or opposition to a planet in your natal chart, forces you through an inner tension to break away from old patterns so that you are more free and detached from things which hold you back. The same freedom of self is likely when the aspect is a sextile or trifle, but you may have to work a little harder to free yourself. With lime square, opposition, oi. conjunction, you cannot ignore the call to freedom. Uranus transits also bring unusual people into your life and also sometimes take old friends out of your life. When Uranus has moved on, you will have changed; you are more free, and you stay that way.
NEPTUNE—When Neptune transits become prominent, you might not be sure what happened until it’s all over. It brings with it a feeling of unreality—fogginess and idealism too. If the aspects of Neptune are the more difficult ones—opposition, square, and conjunction—the results are more hurting, because Neptune is otherworldly, the ideal; humans are not usually ready for universal love or true self-sacrifice. If Neptune transits are used for creativity and spiritual growth, they are handled better and, consequently, they later bring less illusion and disappointment. Always be careful of Neptune transits because they make you want to escape from reality—mind you may never want to come back.
PLUTO—The transits of Pluto never happen at a superficial level. Pluto is able to get to the root of the problem, disintegrate it, and leave it. Then you realize the opportunity to build again, but with a better and clearer perspective without all the “garbage.” Again, as with Neptune, you are more likely to realize what the transit of Pluto meant when it’s over.
The rest of this is missing

Retrograde
When a planet is retrograde, its expression is delayed, or out of kilter with the normal progression of events. Sometimes the functions represented by the planet seem to be obscured or hidden, but more often it is just a matter of delayed timing. Generally, it can be said that whatever is planned during this period will be delayed, but usually it will come to fruition when the retrograde is over. Of course, this only applies to activities ruled by the planet which is retrograde. It is well to be aware that this waiting period does not signal the demise of the projects being undertaken, but only a delay that will straighten out when the planet goes direct.
Activities undertaken when a planet is stationary, about to go direct, are particularly powerful and long-lasting if ruled by that particular planet. Avoid activities when the ruling planet is stationary, going retrograde.
MERCURY RETROGRADE. Although retrogrades of all the planets are of some significance, those involving Mercury and Venus are particularly easy to follow and of a personal use, since these are “personal planets.”
Mercury rules communications, particularly through informal means— reading and writing, speaking, and short errands. Communication by radio and television comes under the rulership of Uranus, unless it is of a personal nature, so cannot be considered here. Whenever Mercury goes retrograde, astrologers find that personal communications get fouled up or misunderstood more often. Letters get lost, friends misunderstand each other, more rnisspellings occur, and so on. So the rule astrologers have developed is when Mercury is retrograde, avoid means of communication of an informal nature. Fortunately, the retrograde of Mercury only lasts for short times

Asteroids & Chiron
Shortly after the discovery of the planet Uranus, the first four asteroids were discovered. On New Years Day in 1801, a Sicilian astronomer named Piazzi sighted Ceres between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. The following year, on March 28, 1802, the asteroid Palias was sighted; on September 1, 1804, Juno was discovered and on March 29, 1807, Vesta was discovered. While not realized at the time by astrologers, these four asteroids were to play an assisting role to the Moon and Venus in expressing the many-faceted feminine principle. These asteroids, named for four Creek goddesses, came to represent the four aspects of femininity; Ceres—the Mother, Pallas—the Daughter; Juno—the Wife; and Vesta—the Sister. To date, over 2,000 other asteroids have been discovered with ephemerides constantly being developed to assist us in our “Asteroid Watch.”
CERES represents what nurtures us and how we go about being nurtured. It represents the principle of unconditional love and acceptance. Ceres is sometimes called the “Great Mother” or, “The Great Earth Mother.” She gives freely with the principle of sharing, and care-giving. When Ceres is in the fire signs (Aries, Leo, or Sagittarius) this nurturing is more inclined to take the form of encouragement and praise. When found in an Earth sign (Taurus, Virgo. or Capricorn) it takes on the form of stabilizing and structuring. When found in an Air sign (Gemini, Libra, or Aquarius) Ceres assists in relating and communicating; and, in a water sign (Cancer, Scorpio, or Pisces) she takes on the role of offering sympathy and understanding. Ceres also represents all that nourishes and, as “Goddess of the Grain,” appears prominently in charts of individuals who plant the seeds, tend the land, harvest the crops, are the cooks, bakers, and work as nutritional counselors. Ceres also has a strong affinity with animal care and those with a prominent Ceres make excellent veterinarians.
,JUNO is the indicator of all one-to-one relationships and our need for compatibility. As Juno represents this need for compatibility, it is our partner or mate, equality, the balance of power and our individual freedoms. She represents our styles of relating. She gives us a mirror for looking at ourselves to see where we are balanced (or need balance). Juno asks us, ‘What do I need in an intimate, committed relationship?” In the Fire signs (Aries, Leo, or Sagittarius) shared visions, independence, and passion are important; in Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, or Capricorn), stability, consistency, and comfort are needed; in Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) there needs to be a verbal exchange; while in water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, or Pisces), emotional rapport, support, and understanding are most important.
PALLAS symbolizes our creative intelligence. She represents our intuition, flashes of genius, keen insights, and our ability to formulate new and original thought. Pallas also represents our abilities to plan strategies that lead us to tangible results. She signifies artistic ability which comes from clear sight and the ability to understand whole patterns; such as the visual arts or graphics, drawing, painting, photography, and all crafts. She has the ability to draw the creative artist from within and to give it form. Pallas also governs healing and the holistic approach to healing therapies; such as guided imagery, meditation, visualization, and all mental self-healing techniques. Her primary role in healing is that of balancing the total psyche. Pallas in a Fire sign (Aries, Leo, or Sagittarius) expresses her creative intelligence by becoming inspired and formulating visions; in Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, or Capricorn) she needs to create new forms and structures; in Air signs (Gemini, Libra, or Aquarius) she develops new ideas and theories; arid in water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, or Pisces), her creative intellect tends to be psychic and intuitive.
VESTA seems to symbolize our ability to focus, to dedicate and aspire to a certain path or goal. She also symbolizes the sacrifices that we make along the way to attain that goal. She represents our ability to work hard and seems to describe where we work for works’ sake rather than for any other goal or reward. When Vesta is well aspected in the birth chart, we genuinely like our work. If not, and if there is a strong dislike of our work, we may encounter times of health problems or times where we feel less well. Vesta is how we integrate and focus ourselves; and in a Fire sign (Aries, Leo, or Sagittarius) we focus through our inspiration to create; in the Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, or Capricorn) through developing a physical discipline; in an Air sign (Gemini, Libra, or Aquarius) through learning and sharing ideas; and in a water sign (Cancer, Scorpio, or Pisces) through merging and bonding.
CHIRON.  On November 1, 1977, at about 10:00 am (Pacific Standard Time) in Pasadena, California, the planet Chiron was discovered between the orbits of Saturn and Uranus. In the years that have followed, astrologers and researchers alike have attempted to understand the importance of this new find. By 1979 some preliminary speculations were in print and have been followed by more detailed work ever since.
Chiron (pronounced Ky-ron) is symbolized by a key and seems to be a major (“key”) player in our life’s lessons. This Chironic key can unlock many doors of our psyche. It can tend to get our immediate attention! It can create sonic booms in our lives that require we “do something about it.” Chiron shows us the way we can heal ourselves, and with Chiron, we are not without guidance. It is the true holistic healer.
In Greek mythology, Chiron was a teacher. His students learned not only the arts of war but of peace. They learned also the necessity of music, art, poetry, astronomy, farming, and healing. They were taught to become whole, learned, and self-sufficient. Chiron is also called “the maverick.” Maverick is interpreted to mean “one who acts alone.” As Chiron is located in an elliptical orbit (with a 50-year cycle in which to transit the zodiac) between Saturn and Uranus, it appears that one of the lessons Chiron is teaching is how to bring the usefulness of the old structures into the future—the honoring of the old rules but with an update into our contemporary thinking modes. In personal, natal astrology by sign and house position, it indicates our awareness that this is a “turning point” area in our chart. In mundane astrology it is very noticeable in the changing of group consciousness. (Remember Chernobyl and the Challenger disaster—both with significant Chiron activity—we learned a lot, didn’t we?)
TRANSITS AND ASPECTS TO ASTEROIDS AND CHIRON
Most transits which occur in your birth chart are happening at a tune in your life when you feel changes are necessary for you to grow in those activated areas. Your attitude toward change is a large factor in whether you find changes easy or difficult. It is always easier to hang on to the past because it is more comfortable and familiar. However, this attitude also keeps you from moving to the next level of your life’s cycle. Change is growth, and both are important for self-actualization. Trying to overcome your chart is fighting against your own self-fulfillment. Working with your birth chart helps you feel the most comfortable and the happiest.
Though small in size, the asteroids Ceres, Juno,  Pallas, and Vesta, as part of the asteroid belt located between Mars and Jupiter, can be our celestial helpmnates on our journey to a better understanding of life. They can assist us in grasping the principles of beginning actions and enlarging upon them. While the asteroids are small in comparison to the size of the planets. it may be well for us to keep in mind that it can sometimes take only one vote to change an election or only one person in a crowd assisting another human being in need.
CERES—According to Greek mythology Ceres was known as “The Great Mother,” giving nurturing and sustenance to those about her. When Ceres transits one of our natal planets it gives us the opportunity to evaluate and change, if necessary, our attitudes and our actions regarding our ability to express love unconditionally. Of course, a clue as to how we might do this is given by the planet being transited. It gives us the opportunity to look at our skills at “givingness” to ourselves and others. It shows how we go about being protective and mothering others. The Ceres transit gives us the chance to achieve more balance in our lives and to create and maintain a sound, healthy working relationship with ourselves. Balance brings contentment and contentment brings about the highest forms of creativity. People adequately nurtured have no boundaries to developing themselves to their highest potential.
JUNO—While Juno in our birth charts represents our ability to develop one-to-one relationships, by transit it affords us the opportunity to better understand the glitches that have prevented us from developing meaningful relationships. We may have to look at the issues necessary to be centered within ourselves and, thereby, freeing us up to develop truly vital and growing relationships with others. The goddess Juno was said to be in constant power struggles with her husband, Jupiter (Zeus). Perhaps, then, the lesson to be learned is that cooperation only brings strength to both individuals whether or not it is a mate, one of our peers, or even a superior on the job. Juno transits shake us loose from our feelings of victimization and give us back our power. The Juno transit gives us the chance to be whole and complete. thereby emanating the gentle, but deep, power of a person who has come to a realization of inner strength developed through sharing with others.
PALLAS—Pallas in our birth charts indicates the area where we can develop a deeper inner knowing and understanding. By transit, Palms takes just under five years to make its zodiacal journey around our charts. In its journey it will make contact with the other planets and angles, thereby allowing the energies to be combined and refined, thus giving us the opportunities to unlock the flow or ideas that may be just below the surface. Pallas in mythology represented the female warrior who preferred diplomacy and negotiation to conflict. She was a strategist and a thinker. Not only did she possess a keen intellect but she possessed instinctual wisdom. As Pallas transits our birth charts we may find that our own inventiveness comes more into focus. Ideas can spring forth at an unbelievable rate and we will find periods of time when we can be keenly focused on a new and more useful form of study. We are seldom still during a transit in which Pallas is one of the key players.
VESTA—Vesta represents the pure fire and vital spirit. By transit it urges us to live out our true desires and motivates us to be our best. As it also represents the hearth (or center) it offers us the opportunity to become focused in our attention and direct our inner fire toward a special cause, project, or ideal. Vesta also is our guide in assisting us in our spiritual direction. By transit Vesta brings us to evaluate our “home.” That is, the home within ourselves, the home—life we experience with our families, or our larger governmental home. Securing and preserving are the major themes during the transit of Vesta. During a Vesta transit going through family photos, investigating family traditions, or possibly, studying genealogy would be of special interest. The planets or angles touched by the Vesta transit can give a very good indication as to how Vesta can be of assistance.
CHIRON. The transit of Chiron can bring a mentor into our lives; one that can show us how to heal the wounds that have been carried far too long. It has a cleansing quality and, much as cleaning out a wound hurts a bit, it does speed the healing of the wound. When wounds are healed, we find that we have greater freedom to pursue our true creative potential. With the transit of Chiron, the good teacher (mentor) opens up new worlds for us by preparing and inspiring us. Experience can be also our teacher. Chiron gives us the opportunity to fill out our education… remember Chiron is the believer in “the whole,” not “the hole”.  Chiron shows us that even though we may encounter adversity we also have the ability to be the healers to others who encounter similar circumstances. The cycle of Chiron is approximately 51 years. Chiron also has an elliptical orbit meaning that it will spend more time in some signs than in others (1.79 years in Virgo and Libra versus 7.94 years in Pisces and 8.28 years in Aries)

Keywords, Asteroids
All of the asteroids contribute like extras in a play, adding just enough to enhance the roles of the main players, but they also play an important and necessary part in their own right.
CERES
Ceres, also known as Demeter, is the largest of the main asteroids used in astrology. It represents caring, nurturing and nourishment much like the Moon does, although the moon tends to rule the nurturing of babies and young children, whereas Ceres is more about older children and the caring of other adults. It is Mother Earth. It tells us about our relationships with our parents and children, the relationship between mother and child. It is representative of the love of children. It also represents pain that comes from dependency and the separation from it. It concerns other things such as self-esteem, fertility and the cycles of nature.

PALLAS
Pallas or Pallas Athena or Pallas Athene, also known as Minerva, is associated with wisdom and intuition. Brought in with these attributes are those of logic and applied strategy. It is also creative of original thought, showing artistic ability. Pallas also rules the relationship between father and daughter. It is also representative of the Warrior Woman and the fight to escape from oppressive male domination. On the negative side, it also rules such things as incest and abuse. It is also concerned with science, the code of genetics and with biotechnology.

JUNO
Juno, also known as Hera, has attributes similar to those of Venus, but whereas Venus is the initial attraction or infatuation, Juno is about the commitment that may or may not follow. It relates to marriage and partnerships, and can indicate by the sign it is posited in the kind of qualities admired in another person. It is representative of attraction, receptivity and compatibility with others. It is the wife or the woman's role in an intimate relationship.

VESTA
Vesta, also known as Hestia, is associated with spiritual truth, cultural values, known as the "keeper of the flame" exuding warmth and good feeling, she was Goddess of the Hearth. It is indicative of personal integration, like an old soul being happiest in surroundings that have stood the test of time, where the home fires have been kept burning so to speak. It is comfortable, yet there for a purpose.

Astrology: The Spiritual Science of Sacred Geometry
Mark Espiner 1996
Astrology is the study of energy which surrounds the Earth and how it reacts with the inhabitants. Similar to a Weather Report. an accurate Astrological forecast can assist in many ways in our everyday lives, helping us to become aware of the dramas we are involved with, and to act in a more forgiving way. The “Natal” (Birth) chart can be seen to represent the “Spiritual Contract” made between yourself and the Universe before birth. and can also be seen as the ultimate “CV”.
The Human body emits its own “Aura”, made up of coloured ElectroMagnetic energy, which is generated from the bodies Chakra system and which continually changes in strength and colour. Like a small Magnet, our Aura is influenced by forces from larger magnets such as the Planets, causing our bodies to also change which in turn effects our emotions and character. In making a study of the interplay of energies effecting us, we can become aware of the way our Health and Psychological states are being effected and make adjustments if necessary. This makes Astrology a vital tool in the Healing Arts.
The two main areas of chart construction are the Natal and Transit charts. Once the birth date, place, and time (to the minute, for greatest accuracy, including Time Zone and Daylight Saving) are known a Natal chart can be cast for any event which may include -Child Birth, Marriage, Travel, Career, Pets, Machines, Ideas, Organizations, Relationships and Partnerships, etc. To the trained eye an accurate Natal chart can give detailed insight into the potentials of the ‘Native', which in times of need can be of great value, similar to a visit to the Mechanic when your Car needs a tune-up. Nowadays the Computer has taken the advanced Mathematics out of astrological calculations which has brought chart construction into the range of everyone.
The three main features of a chart are the positions of the Sun, Moon, and ascendant also known as the “Rising Sign”, (the constellation sign on the horizon at birth). The Sun and the Moon are known as the “lights” of the chart and often battle for “control of the wheel”, as the Sun speaks of open creative expression where as the Moon is more changeable and emotional. Any one of the three may be more dominant than the others, so your Star(Sun)Sign may not be as important as one of the other signs in Newspaper or Magazine Astrology. The Chart is a “Star Map” of the sky seen from the place of birth, showing positions for the planets and the major constellations on the ecliptic (the common path of the planets around the Sun), displayed in a symbolic form for ease of reference which is similar to a foreign language or Hieroglvphs. This Star Map of latent energies is part of a 25.000 year cycle called the “Great Year”, and will not be repeated during this time frame - this makes you unique in the Universe.
Looking at the Natal chart, we see an outer circle which is divided into (1) the 12 Star Signs of 30 degrees each (30 x 12 =360 degrees), at the centre we have the Earth which is surrounded by the symbols for (2) the Aspects, we also have a middle zone divided into 12 segments called (3) The Houses (topics), and in these Houses we find the symbols for the Planets (4). These four main variables are blended together to portray the unique energy vibration and the character potentials of the Native.
The Star Signs represent the Sky or “Heavens” divided into the 12 major constellations along the Ecliptic, and indicate the flavour of the background radiation’s coming from that part of the Universe. Sensitive areas occur at the beginning and end of each Sign, so energy located here has special qualities. Each Sign is governed by a “ruling” Planet which also gives a clue to the Signs flavour and qualities.
The Planets are represented by symbols (of special design), as all the symbols are part of the web of Esoteric knowledge (referring to special “higher” meanings), and indicate the type of energy being used. The Planets are the most dominant force in the chart and include the Sun, Moon, and separately the Asteroids, in the chart layout.
Early civilizations who were aware of these Planets paid great respect to their movements and included them in their lists of Gods, Jupiter (Zeus) being the “King of the Gods”. The Planets are divided into two main groups, the fast moving Inner (Sun to Mars) or “personal” Planets and the slower moving Outer (Jupiter to Pluto) or “generational” Planets -these Outer Planets are what make generations of peoples similar as they are generally in the same Signs as their Peers, and why Parents often have trouble understanding their children as they are of a different outer Planetary pattern. Planets can also be “Retrograde”, a term meaning that the Planet was moving slower than the Earth at the time of birth. Chiron the largest of the Asteroids is often included with the Planets is it represents the “Truth Seeker” a symbol for this “Age of Aquarius”.
The Houses are segments inside the wheel which vary in size depending on the system in use, they refer to personality and character areas of the Native. The Houses (and chart) begin at the “Ascendant” (Rising Sign) which is the local horizon at the time and place of birth, the Ascendant (Asc) is very important and depends on an accurate time of birth to set up the houses properly, it also portrays the type of personality the Native shows to the world depending on the Sign and Degree. Directly overhead at the time of birth is the MC, (Mid-Heaven) which shows the direction of growth for the Native this lifetime. The “Asc” and “MC” are known as the “Angles” of the chart. Depending upon which Planets are in a house and the size of the House determines the role and influence of the House, also each House is governed by’ the ”ruling Planet” of the Sign at the beginning (the cusp) of each House.
The Aspects are geometric relationships and inter-actions of the ElectroMagnetic energy from the Planets. These are divisions of 360 degrees e.g. - 0, 60, 90, 120, 180, etc. and depending on the particular one may help or hinder the energy flow around the chart as the Aspects are release points for Planetary energy. There are usually many Aspects in a chart and are divided into “major” and “minor” categories, it is not often that a Planet is “unaspected”, but when so, it becomes a focus as the Planet may not integrate into the chart easily. The Aspects operate in a similar manner to a Billiard Ball bouncing around the Table, losing speed when hit directly into the cushion.
Once having constructed the Natal chart, the next step is to compare the Natal chart against another chart for compatibility purposes, this is where Astrology becomes a tremendous aid in analysing almost any situation, and is the real purpose of the Art. The most common type of chart for comparison is the “Transit” chart which literally means the transiting (moving) or present Planetary positions, which because the Planets move in an orderly manner, allows the Astrologer to cast a Transit chart for any desired date in the past, present, or future. e.g. - What sort of day was the Master Jesus born on?, or what type of dramatic events await us towards 2001?.
The ‘Transit” chart has the same features as a Natal chart and is usually displayed around the outside of a Natal chart which can be called a “Bi-Wheel”. The charts are then studied for inter-relationships between the Planets which can be displayed in various ways with interpretation reports also available in everyday text format, most Astrologers consult their Transits daily, however any cycle may be used and then displayed listing the Aspects, including weekly, monthly, yearly, full moon, birthday (solar return), etc. depending on the information required. One form of comparison is when two people have their charts surveyed for compatibility, this is called “Synastry” and is a very wise use of the Art, giving partnerships a deeper look into suitability. The practise of Synastry has its roots in the early Church, as one of its main duties was to advise the people of suitable marriage partners which helped to maintain gifted bloodlines and ensured stable family and social frameworks, helping the community to evolve to a higher level.
Indeed the most valuable document a person can have, is an accurate Natal Chart of their birth, and with the rise of the Aquarian Arts this may now be so.

Astrology 101: Beginner's Guide to Reading Your Chart
Gyan Surya 2006
SUN Orbit: ~27,000 years. Revolution: 25 days Diameter: 300,000 miles [109 times the size of Earth] Temperature at core: 25,000,000 degrees F.; at surface: 10,000 degrees F In each sign about one month; mean daily motion 59'8" It has 3 distinct layers: the first, the core, is 210,000 miles wide; second, the photosphere, is 80,000 miles wide; the third, the chromosphere, is 10,000 miles wide. It is hot, dry, masculine, electric and barren [moderately fruitful if in a fruitful sign]. Also called: Sol, luminary, The Greater Light. Rules: Heart, back, spinal cord, right side of the body;hereditary stamina, wrists, fevers, and shares with Jupiter rulership of the glands. Also rules: Creativity, light, love, aspiration, joy, exuberance, entertainment, speculation and gambling, individuality, life purpose, men, the father, fatherhood, children, especially offspring, play, laughter, sociability, drive for self-expression, the husband in a woman's chart, urge to achieve as indicated by sign and house placement. Also theaters, fires, crowns, sunbathing, gold, Sunday, ages 24 to 34, the number 1. Its basic function is to illuminate, elevate, reshape and integrate all past experience with its new qualities. Some keywords are: creativity, vitality, sovereignty, authority, power-potential, leadership, command, confidence, generosity, energy, dignity, determination, endurance, ambition, will. Roles it plays: The Higher Self or life purpose. The father, mentor, teacher or figure of authority. Anyone older or living in an experience more comprehensive than our own. That which we look up to and receive light from. That which we may become. Wherever the Sun is located in a chart is where the affairs are being illuminated so the individual will see the need to fulfill her/his potential in the affairs of that house.
MOON Orbit 27.3 days; mean daily motion is 13 degrees 10 min. of arc Moves through a sign in about 2 1/2 days
Called the Lesser Light
Rules: stomach, breasts, fluids [especially bodily fluids], the mother, public, women in general. Associated with memory, protection, nourishment, receptivity, impressions, intuitions, fertility, maternity, emotions, moods, sensations, sympathy, nurturing, Monday, silver, night, the number two. Symbolizes personality, subconscious predispositions, our instinctual responses. Called the 'sum total of our past lives' experiences'. The house where the moon is placed in a birth chart shows where we have failed to show enough emotion in past lives, and where in this life our emotions have full sway. The moon is passive, changeable, more fluctuating than any other planet. It is the receiver of energy, and takes on the character of the sign it is in and the planets it conjoins. The element of the moon sign represents an attunement from the past that manifests automatically, a mode of feeling and being that one needs to be aware of in order to feel emotionally secure. This element, and experiences related to it feed your need to feel right about yourself. By such modes of self-expression you satisfy a deep inner need that can give stability to your entire personality. The moon's element also shows how you react instinctively to all experiences, with what energy you spontaneously adjust yourself to the flow of life. Emotions are governed by the moon. It indicates the mother / child relationship, the way you think of and feel toward your mother, but not necessarily your mother's true nature. In a horoscope it indicates how you relate with your mother, in a man's chart it may indicate the relationship with the wife [along with Venus], and in all charts how you relate with women in general. It is associated with inherited tendencies, early childhood from birth to seven years of age. Roles and functions: O ur memories, instincts and sources of emotional security, the early environment out of which we came. Our formative years and the nurturance we received [or lacked]. The mother, the emotional roots. That out of which we emerged. MOON VOID OF COURSE The moon moves through each sign in about 2 1/2 days, as indicated above. As it does so it makes aspects [angular relationships] to other planets. From the time it makes its last major aspect in a given sign until it enters the next sign it is said to be 'Void of Course'. This period may last a few minutes or a day or two, depending on the positions of the other planets at the time. During this time one may feel directionless, or at loose ends. Actions taken or decisions made may produce unexpected [and often unwanted] results. Things begun at this time often turn out badly after great frustration, delays, and expenditure of effort. It is therefore not a good time to make decisions, sign contracts, or begin new projects. It is an ideal time to focus on centering or turning attention inward. It may be a great time to have a party, or other activities where the unexpected element may be welcome.
MERCURY Orbit: [elliptical] 88 days [because of so much time in apparent retrograde motion it takes about a year to traverse the zodiac.] It is the closest planet to the sun and therefore never more than 28 degrees from the sun. Revolution: 59 days; Mean daily motion 1 degree 23 min. Density: 5 1/2 times that of water Color: bright yellow to brown Temperature: from 940 degrees F on sunward side to -350 degrees F on dark side. Traverses a sign in 3 1/2 weeks when direct, 8 to 10 weeks when retrograde. It has no moons. Its size is approximately that of our moon. It is cold, magnetic and androgynous [it takes on the gender of the sign it occupies. It is dry in masculine signs, moist in feminine.] Also called: Hermes; Messenger of the gods Rules: Arms, hands, shoulders, respiratory system, tongue, thymus gland, nervous system, dexterity, conscious mind. Also rules: Communication, speaking, writing, messages, telephone, intellect, reason, language, eloquence, articulation, paper, signing documents, letters, magazines, books, touch, agility, transportation, travel, short journeys, relatives, siblings, neighbors, immediate neighborhood, Wednesday, quicksilver, Ages 7 to 15, and the number 5. In pre-modern Astrology Mercury was also given rulership over the sign Virgo and the sixth house. Many Astrologers give it co-rulership with other 'planets', but there is no consensus on the other co-ruler. Some say Chiron, some say Transpluto [called Vulcan, Persephone and other names by various writers]. I use the asteroid Vesta as the ruler, on the theory that the planet that formed the asteroid belt [called Maldek] was the natural ruler of Virgo. Vesta was the center of that planet and her symbolism fits Virgo perfectly. A well-placed Mercury gives verbal fluency, dexterity, and logical, reasonable judgments. Its function is the development of the ability to observe and reason. Some keywords are: brilliance, alertness, versatility, expressiveness, analysis, activity, quickness, spontaneity, enthusiasm, eagerness, inconsistency, indecisiveness, restlessness, nosiness. Logic, intellect, communication and verbal expression. Thought. Ideas. The light of the mind. Logos, direct voice. The position of Mercury in a chart by house shows what the native thinks and talks about and where they get their ideas; where the mind is very active, sorting, classifying, analyzing, discarding and communicating what has been experienced in the affairs of that house. Its sign placement indicates thinking habits, reasoning abilities, capacity to formulate ideas and verbalize thoughts. When Mercury is retrograde in a chart it indicates an introspective and subjective mind, inclined to mull over and re-hash experiences. The thought processes are more subconscious, not as detail-oriented nor expressive. These natives are more timid or reticent. VENUS Orbit: 225 days; Revolution: 243 days Mean daily motion: 1 degree 12 min.; Revolves East to West In a sign 3 1/2 to 4 weeks when direct Retrograde period about 6 weeks; Stationery 3 to 4 days Size and mass equal to Earth's Surface pressure 100 times that of Earth Surface temperature: about 1,000 degrees F. Venus is covered with thick clouds and appears a brilliant white to yellowish color. It is never more than 48 degrees from the sun, and has no sattelites. Also called: Aphrodite; Goddess of Love and Beauty Its function is to develop awareness of others and attract one's desires. Rules: Neck, throat, thyroid, kidneys, veins and venous circulation, ovaries, skin eruptions and equilibrium. Also rules: Love, beauty, money, possessions, aesthetics, desirability, affection, attraction, unity, balance, cooperation, sociability, values, music, voice, art, jewelry, flowers, sweets, fragrances, dimples, self-indulgence, hedonism, sensuality, laziness, women and children, copper, Friday, ages 15 to 24, the number 6. It is associated with a sense of color coordination, a melodious voice, a becoming manner and an attractive appearance. Keywords: Harmony, balance, devotion, refinement, affection, responsiveness, flirtatiousness, superficiality. Roles and functions: How we attract, appreciate, cherish or value something. The way we love. Love, sensuality, attracting what one desires. Harmony, grace, beauty and compassion. In Taurus she values possessions and the physical senses. In Libra she values relationship and the 'other'. Dignified Venus gives charm, refined manners, beauty, popularity and good taste. Detriment or fall gives vanity, self-indulgence, laziness, extravagance and discord in relationships. Wherever Venus is located in a chart indicates an area of life (by house) important in resolving karma through balance, appreciation and love. It indicates where (house) and how (sign) we learn lessons of love. Venus retrograde inhibits outward expression of social interaction. The individual is reticent in social behavior. Financial development may be slow, but will eventually reach the full potential indicated by the chart. MARS Orbit: 687 days; completes one zodiac cycle in 25 to 26 months When direct it is in a sign for 6 1/2 to 7 1/2 weeks Retrograde period lasts 2 to 2 1/2 months; Stationary up to 5 days Mean daily motion: 31' 27" Revolution: 24 1/2 hours Diameter: 4,200 miles [1/2 of Earth's] Temperature: 80 degrees F. in daytime, -150 degrees F. at night Mars has four seasons, no mountains, no water and a very thin atmosphere. It is masculine, hot, dry, electric and barren. It has two small moons: Phobos ['fear'] and Deimos ['terror'] Its color is red. Rules: Head, musculature, adrenal glands, hemoglobin, red blood corpuscles, male genitals, inflammations, hemorrhages, rashes, accidents. Also rules: Desire [especially sexual passion], aggression, war, the military, conflict, weapons, guns, knives, explosives, fire, heat, surgery and surgical instruments, automobiles, machines [co-rules with Uranus], forcefulness, virility, challenge, daring, courage, danger, lust, strife, competition, all that is sharp, intense or acute, young males, iron, steel, Tuesday, ages 34 to 45, the number 9. Its function is to prod us into action. Energy, impulse, action, the drive to be. What drives or moves us. Our passions. Urge to action, adventure, exploration and conquest. Keywords: Activity, desire, endurance, originality, initiative, impulsive, independent, headstrong, selfish, positive, outgoing, impatient, uncompromising, enthusiastic, rash. Its house placement indicates the sphere of interest to which the individual addresses their main thrust of energy and ambition. Mars is the energy that moves us, the way we act, our passions. It is what drives us and the way we are driven. And it is the kind of energy or drive that we have which determines our personal atmosphere or attitude: the kind of room or space in which we have to live. The kind of room we have determines how we feel about our life, comfortable or cramped. After Jupiter fades to an easy repetition, our mind turns to thoughts of exploration and conquest. The Mars energy is a tremendous conflict between us and them, a dichotomy. When we seek to understand the secret of "us" and "them," we penetrate into the Venus energy, finding balance and harmony; compromise. Our life becomes a process of gathering meanings and hints of a possible unity between the opposing parties. Mars, therefore, is the sphere of all that arouses our passion. Anything that gets a rise out of us. We are working with our Mars as long as we have to lead, to challenge and to compete. When we seek adventure and challenge, and actively pursue what we desire, we are working on our Mars. It is the systematic meeting and confronting everything that is foreign or unfamiliar. At some point in this journey, we get the message. We cease to be blown hither and yon by every passing allurement. We discover that life is its own meaning. When retrograde in a chart it requires the native to work harder to utilize their energy productively; they are inclined to be introspective by nature. When stationary in a chart, its energy is concentrated; gives a powerful driving force. JUPITER Orbit: 12 years (elliptical); Revolution: 9 hours 55 minutes
Diameter: 88,700 miles; Mean daily motion: 4' 49"
In each sign about 1 year; Surface temperature: 3,600 degrees F.
Has 14 moons, 4 of which have atmospheres [Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto] It is warm, moist, electric and fruitful.
Surface gravity 2.64 times that of Earth; Density less than 1/3 that of Earth.
Equator is 3 degrees from plane of orbit, so it has no seasonal fluctuations.
Jupiter's Red Spot is a gigantic storm, 25,000 miles long and 8,000 miles across, which has been raging for over 700 years. Due to drastic temperature differences, the planet is very stormy, with alot of lightning.
Jupiter is unique in our solar system in that it radiates 3 times as much heat as it receives from the sun because of its intense gravitational pressure, and is an incipient sun [meaning it may at some time implode and become a star].
Jupiter is called The Preserver; The Expander; The Greater Benefic; and Jove
Rules: The hips and thighs; liver; pancreas [insulin and glycogen]; arteries and circulation of blood; cell development, growth and tumors.
Also: The Superconscious, or Higher Mind; Philosophy, religion, beliefs, the search for Truth; higher education, the intellect, the abstract mind; ritual and ceremony; legal affairs and jurisprudence; foreign affairs and long journeys; books, printing, publishing; governments, organizations; prosperity, abundance, good fortune, benevolence, humor; gambling; horses; Thursday; tin; turquoise; Ages 45 to 57; The number 3.
It represents honesty, generosity, joviality, success; aspiration and inspiration; faith and optimism; judgment and confidence; procrastination. The life path, the way through or on. Continuity, succession. The pathfinder or lamp through the trials of time. Good fortune, success, luck.
Some key words for Jupiter are: out-going, friendly, humane, understanding, enthusiastic, tolerant, righteous, dignified, wise, possibly also extravagant, excessive, indulgent, fanatic, or pompous.
Its function is to lift us out of the realm of desire and stimulate growth and learning.
Its role is teacher, preacher, priest, benefactor or mentor.
Wherever Jupiter is found in the chart is where there is a need and an opportunity for expansion and learning, and where one needs fulfillment. If Saturn is our life's test, then Jupiter is the key, guide, and light that sees us through the darkness of time (Saturn). It is the guidance and wisdom through which we meet and pass Saturn's test. Jupiter is the particular way we proceed or continue in life; continuity. It is our "fortune" or solution to time's test. In astrology, Jupiter is called the 'great benefic' as it shows us how to find our way through Saturn and his tests of time. It shows us how to use Saturn. Jupiter is our key to succession through time, to success. It is the way through or on. Jupiter has to do with how we are to be successful in life in our particular experience with the forces of time. Jupiter often describes our vocation or the way we must go through life, since that through which we have to pass (Saturn) dictates or influences the way we must go through life, our vocation. We have expressed our Jupiter when we are successful.
Once we have learned to master our Saturn by expressing our Jupiter, to be successful, our mind is free to explore our situation. The freedom of Jupiter is eternal vigilance toward the laws of Saturn. We go from victory to victory over time, which translates into day-to-day success.
Jupiter is retrograde approximately four months of each year. In a chart a retrograde Jupiter indicates a deep thinker, a subjective person inclined to much planning and dreaming instead of doing. They are philosophers, but generally keep their ideas and beliefs to themselves. Their expansion and growth are inward, and generally not apparent to others.

Called: Chronos; Father Time; Lord of Karma; Keeper of Records;
Keeper of the Gates; Angel of the Presence
Saturn strengthens the personality through lessons of persistence and endurance. It values moral character and integrity, hard work and waiting.
It is the Teacher of discipline, responsibility and control.
It has been called The Greater Malefic in ancient times, because its work is to test us until we have mastered our karmic lessons. In order to "graduate" and pass through the gate he guards, we must pass all the tests he presents, and none are easy. Yet, if we do our homework and pass the tests, His rewards are as abundant as his lessons are demanding.
Saturn's sign, house, and aspects show how the person handles serious issues, approaches life's obstacles, relates to authority and exercises discipline and control. Astrologers want to know where Saturn is in the chart because here we are sure to gain insight into some of the major obstacles and challenges of life. Saturn is the lord of time and of the material world. He teaches responsibility, self-discipline and perseverance. The laws of Saturn are often dreaded, for it is here that we are shown what we yet lack in these qualities. They are often seen as standing between us and an easy life. But Saturn provides the walls that make homes possible. Gravity is an example; the law that holds things in place. We come across the influence of Saturn every time we break nature's law. We are subjected to and tested by these laws until such time as we learn to use them responsibly. Saturn is so important in the chart because it shows us where we must be disciplined and where we are bound to learn something. The key to the realm of Saturn in your chart can be found by studying your natal Jupiter.
Some key words describing Saturn's energy and influence: conscientious, prudent, austere, binding, sober, conservative, restricting, denying, inertial, organized, traditional, conventional, pessimistic, cynical. It delays, impedes, restricts, perfects and deepens.
In a chart it represents all authority figures, beginning with the father; teachers, old people, men, karma and life's test. If Saturn is retrograde in the birth chart, it indicates an absent father, and a problem with self-doubt.

A retrograde Pluto indicates deep inner change; a choice between the soul's purification or spiritual bankruptcy. In retrograde it operates more deeply [unconsciously] than usual, often bringing illumination and change. Also may indicate psychic abilities brought over from another life experience.
CHIRON
Chiron is a minor planet, or 'planetoid', that orbits between Saturn and Uranus. Its orbit is very elliptical, crossing the orbit of Saturn and touching the orbit of Uranus.
Orbit: 50.7 years.
Diameter: 148 to 208 km [estimate]
Rotation: 5.9 hours
It was discovered on November 1, 1977 by Charles Kowal. Astronomical evidence suggests it has not been in its present orbit for long, in celestial terms. It is presumed that eventually it will have a close encounter with either Saturn or Uranus, and be thrown clear of our system by the 'slingshot effect'. Therefore it is known as a stranger or visitor. It has a detectable coma [indicating it is a cometary body] which occasionally reaches 2 million km, but it is about 50,000 times the size comets usually reach, more like the size of a large asteroid or a minor planet. It may be from beyond our system, or it may have 'escaped' from the Kuiper belt, a hypothetical disk of objects orbiting beyond Neptune. Its symbol is a centaur, a creature who is half man and half horse, in recognition of its dual nature as comet and asteroid.
Its glyph is a key, and its influence is also that of a key to many methods whereby a small action can bring about a powerful effect [as a small key opens a large door].
It is called the Wounded Healer, the Teacher of Higher Knowledge, and the Rainbow Bridge between the material and spiritual realms.
It rules astrology, use of crystals in healing, and holistic healing arts of all types. It also rules use of the hands in healing, therefore massage, polarity therapy, or energy healing with the hands. It is associated with computers and electronics, especially any methods that manipulate or compress time. It is the link between Saturnian time, which is linear and limited, and Uranian time, which is 'soul time', or in the aboriginal traditions 'dreamtime', which is not limited by Saturn's measuring of time. It rules initiation and initiatory process.
The roles it plays are those of healer, teacher, maverick, visitor, and keeper of keys. It is associated with the hands. As we open to Chiron, he brings us a multi-dimensional perception, coming either in the form of an outer teacher [Saturn] or as a soul-knowing, or spiritual guidance [Uranus].
Wherever Chiron appears in your chart is where you are called upon to heal yourself and give your gift, and so it is associated with a deep sense of purpose. It is where you find a key [or keys] which can be shared with others, but only after you have used it for self-healing. Its lesson and work are always holistic and expansive. The Sabian symbol of its degree is said to reveal your soul's wound. Its transits, especially the squares, conjunction, and perhaps the opposition, often bring about a crisis that is a key to awakening, or self-remembrance. There may be confusing experiences that cause you to question your assumptions about time and reality. This is the Uranus influence, undermining the limitations of Saturn.

What is an Astrological House?
Carl Woebcke 1991
No matter where you are on earth you have a horizon, and that's what the horizontal line labeled "Horizon Plane" represents: a local horizon. This horizon line is actually the edge of a plane extending directly out of the picture towards you, but because we're looking at it edge-on it appears to be a line. And since a plane is an infinite flat surface, the horizon plane goes out through the stars and cuts the celestial sphere in half.
The plane perpendicular to the horizon plane that goes through the point directly overhead and the north pole is called the local meridian. It also is edge-on in the upper and lower views and appears as the vertical line labeled "The Meridian Plane". The word local has been repeated because each and every locality on earth has a unique local horizon and a unique local meridian plane, which when extended into space cut the celestial sphere into four unique quarters.
Those two planes intersect the path of the planets at four points in space called the "angles," the most significant points in a horoscope. They are the "ascendant" angle where the horizon plane intersects the zodiac in the east, the "descendant" angle where the horizon plane intersects the zodiac in the west, the "midheaven" where the meridian plane intersects the zodiac above the horizon, and the "nadir" where the meridian plane intersects the zodiac below the horizon. Locate the four labeled angles in the above picture.
The angles are the beginnings or cusps of the four angular houses: the first, fourth, seventh, and tenth. The 12 houses arise by first quartering the local sky with the horizon and meridian planes, then trisecting those quarters like slicing an orange. The resultant 12 slices or spherical lunes are the 12 astrological houses. Locate them in the upper and lower views. The houses other than the angular houses are called the "minor houses": the second, third, fifth, sixth, eighth, ninth, eleventh and twelfth.
There are many different ways ("house systems") to trisect the quarters of the local sky to produce 12 houses, but most of them have the same angles, it's the minor house cusps they disagree on. Named after medieval monks and others, they are the Ptolemy or Equal house system, the Porphyry, Neo-Porphyry, Regiomontanus, Meridian, Koch, Campanus, Placidus, Alcabitius, Morinus, Zariel, Topocentric and Sripati house systems. Placidus is the most popular due to a historical serendipity in its publishing, not to any intrinsic virtue. I use the Campanus house system that trisects the quarters of the local sky in spatially equal sections or lunes as shown above and below. The Placidian and other house systems instead trisect the time it takes a planet or other ecliptic point to go from the horizon to the midheaven.
The First House
The first house represents early childhood conditioning, self-awareness and the experiences needed in becoming self-aware. It is your persona: the mask you wear in relating to the world and projecting yourself into it. It determines your body type and physical appearance, your conscious self-image, and how others experience you. It is like the window through which you see the world and through which others first see you. Planets in the first house are parts of your self-expression. Other than Saturn and Neptune, the more planets in the first house the more you put out your own energy rather than experience it from others, and thus the greater is your subjectivity.
The houses can be subdivided into four groups: the angular houses (1st, fourth, 7th and 10th) that fall counterclockwise away from the horizontal and vertical angles in the above model; the succedent houses (2nd, 5th, 8th and 11th) that follow them; and the remaining four cadent houses (the 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th) that precede the angles. The angular houses are by far the strongest group, and the first house is the strongest of these. Planets in the first house symbolize energies that are tied with one's ego, personality, self-presentation and self-awareness.
The sign on the cusp (or beginning) of your first house—your "rising sign" or "ascendant"—can be thought of as the tint on the window to your soul. It colors and modifies all of the energy passing in and out of your being. In fact, all of your personality functions (the energies of the planets) must eventually emerge through and be colored by your rising sign if they are to emerge at all.
Your rising sign has a lot to do with how you express yourself and what you look like. For example, Virgo rising individuals look 10 to 20 years younger than they are because Virgo is ruled by Mercury the god of youth. Cancer rising individuals are often round or Moon-faced, and women with Cancer rising often have large breasts, ruled by Cancer's ruler the Moon. And Sagittarius people often appear horse-faced.
A planet is said to rule a house when it is the ruler of the sign on the cusp or beginning of that house. Using this concept, locate the ruler of your first house, then notice the house it occupies. The house the first house ruler is in holds experiences to help you to develop self awareness, appropriate self expression, a positive self image and good personal appearance—all first house needs. That's what the first-house ruler is doing in the house it occupies: gaining experience to fill the needs of the house it rules. The first-house ruler's aspects and sign show its ease or difficulty in fulfilling those first house needs. These principles are true of every house ruler and every planet. In this case, oppositions between the rulers or occupants of the first and seventh houses emphasize the value of putting yourself out into the world even though you have to balance self expression with your need to relate to and be intimate with others. And by the way, the cusp or the beginning of the first house is called the ascendant, the sign on the seventh house cusp is the ascendant sign, and the planet ruling the ascendant sign called the ascendant ruler or "Lord of the chart" indicating its importance.
The "natural ruler" of the first house is Mars, the ruler of the first sign Aries. Mars symbolizes the energy of the ego and is therefore strongly placed in the first house of self and self-presentation.
Astronomically speaking, the first house is that one-twelfth sector of the local sky just below the eastern horizon occupied by planets two hours before they rise.
The Second House
The second house describes both inner and outer resources. We draw on emotional and mental inner resources in dealing with the situations with which life presents us. These assets form our sense of self-worth and self-esteem. Our outer resources are our finances and physical possessions: movable property that we own (as opposed to real estate). These assets form our sense of security. Some of us identify with what we own; others with what we are. They both, however, are what we value, and we attract to us what we value. Thus the second house is where we build in true value and our power of attraction. Planets here show how and to what we are attached, and the degree of our possessiveness.
The second house also symbolizes our strongest desires and the manner in which we meet our obligations. Isabelle Hickey said that this house indicated "that which the life is dedicated to redeem", and is thus related to one’s peace of mind.
Astronomically speaking, the second house is that one-twelfth sector of the local sky midway between the eastern horizon and the nadir, or fourth house cusp occupied by planets two to four hours before they rise.
The Third House
The third house represents understanding through information, and what we know as a result of interactions within our community. "Community" here means neighbors, siblings, short journeys, letters, news and rumors. This house rules our rational thought and conscious mind, memory, speech, early education and environment, writing and communication, dexterity and taken-for-granted skills, explorations, investigations, inquiry, and research of all kinds. Planets in the third house describe the quality and quantity of our mental and nervous energy.
Astronomically speaking, the third house is that one-twelfth sector of the local sky clockwise from the nadir occupied by planets in the two hours after they pass through the lowest point of the local sky.
The Fourth House
Our emotional foundation and subconscious self-image based on early childhood experiences are established in the fourth house. The way we feel about ourselves is conditioned by our experience of our parents’ (or significant others’) acceptance or rejection of us as we were growing up. From these experiences we developed our sense of belonging and our capacity to receive—and/or a sense of alienation and a difficulty or frozenness in receiving.
The fourth house rules the home, our family as a child and as an adult, the nurturing parent and our early experience of being nurtured , our most personal and intimate life, real estate and property, and our heritage and ancestry. Here is where we send down roots and establish a base of operations, find our limits, and generally secure ourselves. It is the end of any searching we might have done in the third house, and thus rules the latter part of life. A planet here indicates the need for a stable emotional base in order to fill the needs of the house it rules. The more planets in this house, the more one tends to be subjective, personal, private or introverted.
Astronomically speaking, the fourth house is that one-twelfth sector of the local sky counter-clockwise from the nadir occupied by planets in the two hours before they reach the lowest point in the local sky.
The Fifth House
The fifth house shows our needs in love and where we release fourth house energies and emotions. The more emotional we are, the greater the need for constructive channels of expression. All forms of self-expression, anything we create or do purely for its own sake, children of the mind and the body, love affairs (insofar as they represent fun and self-expression) or their lack, theater, dramatics, hobbies, speculation, play and amusement, are all indicated by this house. The more planets we have in the fifth, the more abundant the energy we have to release, with perhaps some disinterest in receiving the same from others. This is also the house of hidden karma resulting from the misuse of the will or love principle in past lives.
Astronomically speaking, the fifth house is that one-twelfth sector of the local sky midway between the western horizon and the nadir occupied by planets two to four hours after they set.
The 6th House
The sixth house, like the sixth sign Virgo, represents the last personal stage in development, and is thus a critical one. The self-adjustment we undergo here determines our ability to relate to others on an equal footing (seventh house), and, by its success or failure, unites us with or separates us from others. This is the house of work and health or the lack of either, hygiene and nutrition, service, servants and servitude, daily routine, employment by others, and small animals and pets. Whereas fifth house activities are done for their own sake, sixth house work is done out of necessity or in support of other, more self-expressive activities. When our work becomes an end in itself, however, or we lose track of its purpose, it becomes pointless, and the result can be physical or psychological illness. The issue with planets in the sixth house is to remember what the purpose of our work is, where is it’s joy? Without this knowledge, life isn’t worth living.
Astronomically speaking, the sixth house is that one-twelfth sector of the local sky just below the western horizon occupied by planets in the two hours after they set.
The Seventh House
The seventh house is opposed to the first house literally and in emphasis: in the first house we put our energies into the world; in the seventh the world puts energy back into us. The purpose of the seventh house is to bring about greater self-awareness through relating to what we experience as being outside of ourselves. This may in fact be energy within us that we have rejected out of fear or the need to experience it more objectively or externally. This is called projection, and we seek projected parts of ourselves in our intimate relationships.
Thus the seventh house rules intimate one-to-one relationships of all kinds including marriage, business and counseling relationships, open enemies and conflicts, lawsuits and the lower courts. Planets in the seventh house indicate areas in our lives that need relationships to bring them out, and the houses ruled by seventh house planets are those "areas." Many planets here indicate many needs that we are looking for others to fill. In this case many relationships or more than one marriage is probable, as it’s unlikely that one individual would fill all those needs. Individuals with so much projected energy feel a void in their lives, and may encourage others to be dependent, or even pick fights rather than be alone.
The "natural ruler" of the seventh house is Venus, the ruler of the seventh sign Libra. Venus represents the energy of harmony and relatedness, and is therefore well placed in the seventh house of intimate one-to-one relationships.
Astronomically speaking, the seventh house is that one-twelfth sector of the local sky just above the western horizon (see above picture) occupied by planets in the two hours just before they set.
The 8th House
The eighth house asks us to enlarge or sacrifice our ego boundaries in order to enter into relationship or union with another or others. To do so, some aspect of our personality or ego must die. Usually it is some thing, not some one, that dies, and with the passing away of that limiting aspect of our personality we experience a releasing freedom.
Herein is the second aspect of this house: resurrection and rebirth. The eighth house rules personal evolution, growth, transformation and change, death, rebirth, sex, possessions of a relationship, legacies, inheritance, taxes, rituals, initiations and the occult, the astral body and reincarnation, and the severing of ties to that to which we are attached. A planet in the eighth indicates that a personal facet of your psyche is under pressure to work more cooperatively or jointly with others. Many planets here signify a person whose life can be characterized by change. Such individuals may find continuous states of affairs monotonous, and periodically bring about changes or crises to feel truly alive.
Astronomically speaking, the eighth house is that one-twelfth sector of the local sky midway between the Midheaven and the western horizon occupied by planets in the two to four hours before they set.
The Ninth House
The ninth house is where we search for truth: experiences that broaden the mind and help us form our philosophy of life. Here we expand our consciousness, synthesize meaning from facts and experience, adjust personal attitudes to collective ideas, and understand how things are integrated into systems. This house rules higher education, religious and ethical understanding, spiritual visions, in-laws, long journeys, law and the higher courts. Here is what remains of the purification that took place in the eighth house: its seed or essence. "Religion" comes from the Latin "re-," back + "ligare," to bind, hence, "to bind back," and thus refers to all things that last or endure, such as the truth. Many planets in the ninth are usually an indication of being unwilling to accept the conventional limits within which we were raised.
Astronomically speaking, the ninth house is that one-twelfth sector of the local sky clockwise from the midheaven occupied by planets two hours after they culminate.
The Tenth House
The tenth house symbolizes our capacity (or lack thereof) to contribute to and to make a place for ourselves in the outside world; it is our social image. It rules authority figures, guides and role models that have assisted us in exteriorizing ourselves in the world. Here is our career or profession, the dominant parent who guided us into the world, and our orientation toward society based on his or her example. Here are people in power over us (such as bosses and employers), our honor and reputation, and how we play out these roles in relation to others (our being a father, guide, or disciplinary figure). Planets in the tenth house show by the houses they rule which areas in our life depend on our reputation or professional role for the fulfillment of their needs. Many planets here indicate a need to achieve and be recognized as an important person, a strong father orientation, or to have others dependent on us.
Astronomically speaking, the tenth house is that one-twelfth sector of the local sky counter-clockwise from the midheaven occupied by planets two hours before they culminate, or reach the tenth house cusp.
The Eleventh House
The eleventh house is where we find our identity within a group; it symbolizes one-to-many relationships as distinct from seventh house one-to-one relationships. It rules friends, groups, our social circle, membership in societies and organizations, ideals and aspirations shared by the groups to which we belong, and in general situations in which we have to change our behavior to get along with more than one other person at the same time. Planets in the eleventh house show the kind of friends we attract to us or the kinds of energy we experience in relation to groups. Many planets in this house indicate that we live a large part of our lives in connection with our friends or groups, and often need group support to accept or value what we are doing.
Astronomically speaking, the eleventh house is that one-twelfth sector of the local sky midway between the Midheaven and the eastern horizon occupied by planets two to four hours after they rise.
The 12th House
When a planet rises in the east it can now be seen - and thus it enters the twelfth house. Just so, our first instances of self-expression that we offer into the world are vulnerable and easily defeated, but the effect of their success or failure on our personality is enormous. Pulling some of our energy back into our self to keep it from being defeated or overwhelmed has two results. If we are aware of what we are doing, it becomes our hidden secret. If this process is unconscious, it becomes a rejected aspect of the self. These secrets or repressed aspects of the self form the classical interpretation of the twelfth house.
But what if the immature energy we put into the world isn’t defeated early on? Then it can become a source of strength and a dominant aspect of our personality, and even signify our career. The twelfth house is thus where we build inner strength to overcome limitations, sorrows and fears, and where the individual adapts to the collective. It signifies self-undoing: where we stand in our own way, where we are not free to let ourselves become and be who we essentially already are. It also represents that which is hidden, karma, limitation, confinement, prison, betrayal, sacrifice, hospitals and institutions, nuns and priests, secrets and secret enemies (who may just be rejected aspects of ourselves), initiation, ultimate understanding, and charity given or received.
Astronomically speaking, the twelfth house is that one-twelfth sector of the local sky just above the eastern horizon (see above picture) occupied by planets during the two hours after they rise.

Decans or Decanates
Cornelia Jones 2011
Have you ever wondered why people born under the same zodiac sign are so different in their nature?  We know that all people with their sun in Aries are not the same.  It takes the whole birth chart to determine the nature of an individual.  The ancient astrologers knew this and divided each zodiac sign; modern astrology has taken the divisions further.   We divide the signs by their elements, qualities and by the positive (masculine) and negative (feminine) expression.  There is another method used to divide the signs and determine rulership, by using the Triplicities.  This division is called the decanates. Is it necessary to know the decanates?  Sometimes.  Sometimes it completes the story, other times it helps to pinpoint the nature of activity going on in the subject’s life.  The decans and rulers are worth investigation and have proven effective in predictive astrology, especially in the progressed horoscope.  The ruler of the decan of the rising sign in the progressed chart has a great deal of influence over the whole life, for the time in question, particularly if there are any aspects made by that ruler, or if the planet is strong in the natal chart.  The influence of the decan is often similar to the conjunction. Each zodiac sign governs 30 degrees of the natal chart.  Twelve zodiac signs at 30 degrees each constitute the complete natal chart encompassing 360 degrees.
The Decans or Decanates: Each sign is divided into three divisions of 10 degrees, each sign has 3 decans, one for each division of 10 degrees.  Each decan has a ruler which becomes the sub ruler of the sign or the co-ruler of that sign.   Once you are familiar with the Triplicities (fire, earth, air, water), it will be easier for you to determine the sub-rulers of each decan.   Each decan of a sign will be in the same triplicity (fire, earth, air, water) as the sign itself. They are arranged in the same order as they appear in the zodiac. The first decan of Aries is Aries, ruled by Mars. The second decan is Leo, ruled by the Sun, the next fire sign in the zodiac.  So the second decan of Aries is ruled by the Sun. The third decan of Aries would be the next fire sign after Leo, which is Sagittarius, ruled by Jupiter.  Each decan is of the same Triplicity - the fire element.  The first decan of Taurus is Taurus, ruled by Venus. The second decan of Taurus is Virgo, ruled by Mercury.  The third decan of Taurus is Capricorn, ruled by Saturn.  Each decan is of the same Triplicity - the earth element.
Zodiac Sign Aries – Fire Ruler of first decan.............0° - 10° - Mars Ruler of second decan......10° - 20° - Sun Ruler of third decan...........20° - 30° - Jupiter Taurus – Earth Ruler of first decan.............0° - 10° - Venus Ruler of second decan......10° - 20° - Mercury Ruler of third decan...........20° - 30° - Saturn Gemini – Air Ruler of first decan.............0° - 10° - Mercury Ruler of second decan......10° - 20° - Venus Ruler of third decan...........20° - 30° - Uranus Cancer – Water Ruler of first decan.............0° - 10° - Moon Ruler of second decan......10° - 20° - Pluto Ruler of third decan...........20° - 30° - Neptune Leo – Fire Ruler of first decan.............0° - 10° - Sun Ruler of second decan......10° - 20° - Jupiter Ruler of third decan...........20° - 30° - Mars Virgo – Earth Ruler of first decan.............0° - 10° - Mercury Ruler of second decan......10° - 20° - Saturn Ruler of third decan...........20° - 30° - Venus Libra – Air Ruler of first decan.............0° - 10° - Venus Ruler of second decan......10° - 20° - Uranus Ruler of third decan...........20° - 30° - Mercury Scorpio – Water Ruler of first decan.............0° - 10° - Pluto Ruler of second decan......10° - 20° - Neptune Ruler of third decan...........20° - 30° - Moon Sagittarius – Fire Ruler of first decan.............0° - 10° - Jupiter Ruler of second decan......10° - 20° - Mars Ruler of third decan...........20° - 30° - Sun Capricorn – Earth Ruler of first decan.............0° - 10° - Saturn Ruler of second decan......10° - 20° - Venus Ruler of third decan...........20° - 30° - Mercury Aquarius – Air Ruler of first decan.............0° - 10° - Uranus Ruler of second decan......10° - 20° - Mercury Ruler of third decan...........20° - 30° - Venus Pisces – Water Ruler of first decan.............0° - 10° - Neptune Ruler of second decan......10° - 20° - Moon Ruler of third decan...........20° - 30° - Pluto Example:  Your progressed ascendant 15° Virgo, the decan of 15° Virgo is Saturn.  If I were to cast your chart, I would see that Mercury rules your chart and Saturn is co-ruler.  Therefore, Mercury has rulership over your chart and the decan shows that there are Saturn influences in your personal circumstances.  There may be more attention to duty and details under Saturn’s influence.  You may be more ambitious and work hard for recognition or reward.  There will be more patience and perseverance now.  What you do achieve now will come through your hard work and efforts.  Your success and its timing also depends on other influences in your chart and the aspects made to your Ascendant, its ruler Mercury, co-ruler Saturn, and your Midheaven (career).

The Real Scoop on Mutual Reception
Alan Oken 2000
The natal horoscope is the blueprint that reveals the natural scope of our creative potentials. It also reveals what blocks or what stands within us to either aid or inhibit the expression of such talents and abilities. The positions and interrelationships of the planets clearly indicate such circumstances. But we are not limited by our horoscopes, by any means. As the Path of unfolding presence of the Soul reveals itself, we gradually obtain the potential to co-create our own destiny. This is free will in action and when, through the Soul, free will is connected to Love, this becomes goodwill. — A.O.
One of the most important factors in astrological delineation is a feature called “dispositorship.” The word itself comes from the Latin verb disponere, meaning, “to put in different places.” A planetary dispositor in astrology has come to mean a planet that has the ability to move the energy of another planet (or house) to a different location in the chart. For the astrological student, the discovery of the structure of dispositorship in the natal map allows him or her to perceive a true ordering of planetary powers.
Mutual reception is a facet of dispositorship that intimately links planets and/or houses. Planets are said to be n mutual reception when they are placed in each other’s signs in the same horoscope. Mars in Aquarius and Uranus in Scorpio, Jupiter in Leo and the Sun in Sagittarius, the Moon in Virgo and Mercury in Cancer, are all examples of this kind of mutual dispositorship. When you are interpreting the chart, it is important to view any such planetary connections as a pair of influences. The two planets in questions work together, enhancing or debilitating their various functions. Although each of the planets in a mutually receptive pair ought to be considered individually, the effects of the combined energies existing between the two bodies also exists and needs to be interpreted as such. It is only by so doing that the full range of implications of both planets may be fully comprehended.
There are two other factors that complicate but also complete the matter of your analysis of planets in mutual reception. The first is that the astrologer has to consider which of the two planets dominates the mutuality of the reception. If we have Venus in Pisces and Neptune in Libra for example, Venus in Pisces would be the stronger as Venus is in exaltation and thus strengthened in this sign while its "partner" Neptune is "comfortable" but otherwise neutral in Libra. If the two were Mercury in Sagittarius and Jupiter in Gemini, both planets would be seen to be weakened as both are in detriment in their opposite signs. One would have to look elsewhere (such as the house positions, other planetary aspects and if there is a sign of Jupiter or a sign of Mercury on the Ascendant) to assess which of the two is the stronger. Secondly, are the planets in mutual reception also connected by one of the six major aspects: conjunction, sextile, square, trine opposition, and inconjunction? If we combine these two factors we come up with an important Astrological Rule: When two planets are in mutual reception and also connected by one of the six principle aspects, the effects of the mutual reception are either strengthened for the good or debilitate the planets even further depending on the nature of the aspect.
The astrological student should also keep in mind that the houses in which planets in mutual reception are found are also closely linked. Thus if Venus in Cancer in the Tenth House were sextile to the Moon in Taurus in the Eighth, the positive energies of this combination would extend themselves over into an harmonious linkage of these two houses and their functions in the natal chart. This would be especially the case if Cancer and Taurus were the signs of the cusps of their respective house placements. Remember that in natal astrology we are always, always seeking to understand the relative strengths and weaknesses of the planets and houses in order to give them proper emphasis and priority in our analysis.
There are literally dozens of possibilities for mutual reception in the natal chart. As this is such a common factor in natal analysis, it is impossible for us to write about all of them in the space of an article of this length.1 But let us examine a number of mutual receptions in order to give the reader some insights as to how to interpret such planetary relationships when they are found in a chart. To help us in this endeavor, the following is a table of planetary powers.
Planet Honor Detriment Exaltation Fall Sun Leo Aquraius Aries Libra Moon Cancer Capricorn Taurus Scorpio Mercury Gemini/Virgo Sag/Pisces Aquarius Leo Venus Taurus/Libra Scorpio/Aries Pisces Virgo Mars Aries/Scorpio Libra/Taurus Capricorn Cancer Jupiter Sag/Pisces Gemini/VIrgo Cancer Capricorn Saturn Capricorn/Aqu Cancer/Leo Libra Aries Uranus Aquarius Leo Scorpio Taurus Neptune Pisces Virgo Cancer Capricorn Pluto Scorpio/Aries2 Taurus/Libra Aquarius Leo
Sun in Aries and Mars in Leo:
The first question we ask ourselves is: which of these planetary combinations is the stronger? The answer is the Sun in Aries. Although Mars is quite potent and very comfortable in the sign of the fiery Lion, the Sun in Aries is in the sign of its exaltation. Thus we can imagine a person with this combination in his or her natal chart to be a “super Aries”, or an individual who has little trouble projecting his or her fiery creative will. This would be even further emphasized should Mars in Leo and the Sun in Aries also be in trine. As it involves the ruling planet of the chart, we would have an even more willful and dominant personality if Leo or Aries were rising making this trine the predominate aspect of the horoscope. We must keep in mind that there are many, often contradictory elements in a given map. Thus the ease of self-projection indicated by this mutually receptive trine would be strongly modified to the contrary should Capricorn be on the Ascendant and Saturn square either Mars or the Sun. As the reader has no doubt found out, astrology and natal analysis in particular are very complex studies!
Sun in Capricorn and Saturn in Leo: Which is the stronger? As Saturn is in detriment in Leo, the Sun in Capricorn by default is the stronger. Why do we say “by default”? The Sun is happiest and shines most brightly when it is in the fiery signs. Its energy is diffused in air, obscured in water and buried in earth. In soul-centered astrology, the potential of the Sun in Capricorn gives rise to the Initiate (i.e. Christ is born when the Sun is in Capricorn). The Initiate is a man or woman who has transcended the urge for personal power and achievement, personal wealth and worldly status and who by his or her service to humanity, reveals the power of what we call, the “True Spiritual Sun/Son.” But such an exalted status is not the common lot of humanity. A person with a highly evolved consciousness could use this mutual reception of Sun and Saturn in order to express “the will-to-good,” but an ordinary fellow with this combination would most likely go through life seeking to express one’s personal will with the urge to dominate the environment accordingly. This would be especially true if either Leo or Capricorn were the rising sign. Thus frustration he or she would encounter in this willful urge would be even more emphasized if the Sun in Capricorn were inconjunct Saturn in Leo. The reverse could also be true, i.e. one of the major karmic inferences in an incarnation with this mutual reception would be for the individual to learn how to develop and properly use an underdeveloped sense of willpower. As is always the case, the entire horoscope would have to be examined. The Sun in Libra and Venus in Leo: Which is the stronger? Venus in Leo. The Sun is in fall in the sign of the Scales. Its rays lose their potency through a wavering inconsistency especially when the individual is forced to act independently for any period of time. Libra’s greatest strength (and weakness!) is when he or she is interacting in partnership or in social settings. The creative and attractive force of Venus is dramatically focused in Leo, although the “urge to merge” of the Divine Aphrodite as well as her esthetic sensibilities will tend to be personal to the extreme. The energies of this mutual reception however, especially if there be a sextile between the Sun and Venus in these signs, generally yields an artistically oriented, socially graceful and often physically beautiful individual. These qualities would be emphasized if either Libra or Taurus were rising. Even if there were a semi-square (45 degrees of separation) between these two planets, i.e. Venus at 16 Leo and the Sun at 2 Libra, not much harm could arise. This mutual reception is “soft” by its very nature as the two planets in question are quite compatible. The challenging nature of the semi-square linking this mutual reception would not deny having partners—even good ones! On the contrary, this connection by mutual reception between the Sun and Venus would tend to stimulate an intense and passionate love life and would definitely enhance the fun factor in intimate relationships. Any problems that could arise would come from the fact that the Venus in Leo, Sun in Libra person would tend to create a relationship on his or her concept of what is fun and what is passionate which may or may not be the same concept as the chosen beloved.
Mars in Capricorn and Saturn in Aries: Which is the stronger? Mars in Capricorn. Mars is exalted in the Mountain Goat and Saturn in is fall in the Ram. Mars in this position would tend to stimulate and give focus and structure to personal drives and ambitions. Saturn in Aries on the other hand, would tend to inhibit this martial “go-for-it” attitude by limiting its scope of effectiveness based on the individual’s need to create his own system of rules and regulations. This instead of penetrating (Mars) ones ambitions into a larger social structure (Capricorn) and making use of larger, collective resources, the individual would tend to shape those resources according to a sense of personal limitations and timing (Saturn in Aries). The latter is often in conflict with the larger social world in which he is a part (Saturn in fall). Should there be a square between Mars in Capricorn and Saturn in Aries (which can easily be the case), such an aspect would only enhance the natural antipathy existing between both these planets and their respective signs. The square between Mars and Saturn links them in a constant battle for dominance. Mars says, “Go!” and Saturn says, “No!” This is very much like driving a highly tuned car with the brakes on while all the time attempting to break records at the Indy 500.
But what would occur is Mars in Capricorn were trine Saturn in Aries? This could happen if Mars were in the first degrees of its sign and Saturn in the last degrees of its position (for example, Mars at 2 Capricorn and Saturn at 29 Aries, yielding a trine of 117 degrees well within the 120 degree orb for this aspect). Although the struggle between these two very different forces would still exist, the individual could find that life would more easily provide some solutions to this “stop and go” kind of tension. The individual could more easily learn how to create the proper boundaries and structures for his particular goals, recognizing the relationship that has to exist between the personal ordering of events (Aries) and the exigencies of the social order in which one lives (Capricorn). Thus through successful trial and error, the individual would come to learn how to minimize the inherent frustration that exists within the energies of this mutual reception.
A complication arises if both planets are in mutual reception but are also in the signs of their detriment. This can only occur in the case of so-called, “reversed pairs”: Venus in Aries or Scorpio and Mars in Libra or Taurus, Mercury in Sagittarius or Pisces and Jupiter in Gemini or Virgo, the Moon in Capricorn and Saturn in Cancer, the Sun in Aquarius and Uranus or Saturn in Leo, Neptune in Virgo and Mercury in Pisces, and Venus in Scorpio with Pluto in Taurus. Should any of these pairs also be in opposition, the resulting mutual reception could be even more deleterious as here you are compounding weakness upon weakness.3 In terms of delineation, you still need to determine which of these two planets will be of the greater influence. This requires that the astrological student know the “theme” of the horoscope.
Let’s say that you are studying a chart that Cancer rising. The Moon, as the ruler of the Ascendant, plays one of the most if not the most vital roles in the entire nativity/life of the person. If the Moon were in Capricorn (its detriment) and Saturn in Cancer (its detriment), the Moon as ruler of the chart would be the more debilitated and hence debilitating to the native. The Moon’s house position would thus be an area of serious conflict for the individual. As another example, let’s say that you are looking at a chart with Sun in Scorpio with an Aries Ascendant (that is conflict enough!) and Mars were placed in Taurus in opposition to Venus in Scorpio. As we can see, both these planets are in their detriment but Mars is much more of a debilitating influence to the native as it rules both the Sun and rising sign.
Yet another factor in the correct judgment of mutual reception occurs should one of the planets be in its exaltation and the other in a neutral sign. This is the case when Jupiter is in Cancer and the Moon is in either Sagittarius or Pisces. Here the Moon rules Cancer but Jupiter in this sign is in its exaltation as well as the ruler of the Moon’s sign placement. The influence of Jupiter would thus tend to predominate unless Cancer was rising in which case there would be ample reason to give the Moon increased influence. This example leaves little doubt that it is in the ability to synthesize the various elements of a horoscope that the real art of the astrologer expresses itself.
1 The reader may wish to consult my book Rulers of the Horoscope (The Crossing Press, 2000) for a more lengthy discussion of this and many other important factors of dispositorship.
2 Although some would dispute this listing, there are a number of astrologers including the writer, who view Pluto as the co-ruler of Aries
3 In the case of Mercury and Jupiter squares are also possible, i.e. Mercury in Sagittarius square to Jupiter in Virgo. In the case of Mars and Venus conjunctions may also be found, i.e. Venus at 28 Aries conjunct Mars at 2 Taurus. Such conditions would also prejudice the horoscope.
