"Tilia is a vest-wearing conservation dog that the 444-acre [Mequon] nature preserve relies on for vital conservation and restoration work.
The dog’s responsibilities include sniffing out invasive and endangered species in the prairies, forests, and wetlands of Mequon.
Conservation dogs have become more commonplace in wildlife organizations, tapping into their astonishing scent-detecting abilities.
“Dogs in general already have up to 200 million olfactory sensors,” Cory Gritzmacher, the director of operations at the nature preserve, told Wisconsin Life.
Humans, on the other hand, have about 5 million.
“[Dogs are] already set up and designed for scent detection,” Gritzmacher added. “It’s really just finding a dog that’s motivated, that wants to do it on a regular basis and is excited to do it.”
Tilia was the pup for the job.
One of her main roles is to detect wild parsnip, an invasive species that staff removes once it is found on the property.
Compared to humans, Tilia can find parsnip in its first year, while it’s still close to the ground and camouflaged by other plants. This is vital, since parsnip will start to spread rapidly by the time it reaches its second season in the preserve.
Studies show that the estimated damage caused by invasive species has cost the United States around $120 billion annually, as it impacts agriculture, recreational industries, and wildlife management.
By catching invasive species that take hold of local flora and fauna early, Tilia achieves something no humans can.
“The best trained volunteers or staff in the world won’t even be able to find what a canine can,” Gritzmacher said. “That’s the pretty impressive part of it. And who doesn’t want to go to work with a dog?” ...
Tilia began training as a puppy, and now nearly seven years old, she’s a pro at scent detection — which all started with some treats hidden in cardboard boxes...
“As she continues to hit on the correct scent, then she gets rewarded. So, she’s going to get paid again. We do our work, we get paid. She does her work, she gets paid.”
Tilia can also spot Blue-Spotted and Easter Tiger Salamanders, which are endangered in the area. Her other scents include Wood Turtle and Garlic Mustard.
Of course, her workload remains balanced with time off. Her official owner is the director of Mequon Nature Preserve, who is happy to embrace her as the family dog when she’s not out sniffing.
But Gritzmacher, who trains and works alongside Tilia, adores her, not only for her companionship, but for the miracles she is able to work as an asset to Wisconsin’s conservationists.
“Canines are going to start to play a huge role in the conservation field just because of their amazing detection skills,” Gritzmacher said, “especially when resources are limited, staff is limited and you have to search potentially thousands of acres or miles.”
In fact, Tilia was joined by a partner in crime a few years ago: Timber, another chocolate lab who is actually the offspring of Tilia’s sister.
By following in her pawprints, Timber’s “powerful nose will be a key tool” in the preserve’s “land restoration efforts,” according to its website.
“For years, scientists have tried to replicate the power and efficiency of the canine nose,” Mequon Nature Preserve adds on a webpage for Tilia and Timber.
“The results keep coming back the same: The canine nose is second to none. Coupled with an insatiable desire to work and serve, Tilia and Timber help us find things humans often can’t.”"

The name for this nonsense is a Swiss binding, btw.

when heterosexuals do literary analysis of works in which queerness and the persecution thereof are major themes which they just completely skip over or call 'confusing relationships'
#spitblaze says things#genuinely i do not know how you could possibly read the short story What Happened at Cambridge IV and not catch these things#the story's narrator is drinking himself to death after indirectly killing the man he loved but did not love him back#he makes a very pointed statement about 'they're so scared of AIDS but we'll give them something to *really* be scared about'#theres an entire diatribe at the start that implies he sent the letter to the recipient in the first place bc they're probably queer too#He is encouraging the reader to send a deadly cognitohazard to conservative MPs saying that he's done so already#like idk how many times this dude can talk about how he's jealous of the girl in the lab his love interest likes#and how he's being careful not to stare or admire too hard and willing to go to extreme lengths just to see this guy get more funding#the story ends with him hoping he'll be able to 'finally touch your hand' after he dies#THIS IS A STORY ABOUT A GAY MAN LIVING A DOUBLY HIDDEN LIFE IN BRITAIN IN THE 90S HOPING THAT BY UTILIZING THE FRUITS OF HIS LOVE'S LABOR#THAT OTHERS LIKE HIM COULD POSSIBLY BE SET FREE JESUS H CHRIST#god. anyway#the BLIT series is good and Heterosexual Denseness is frustrating

Alberta's auditor general says he will investigate what went wrong with the United Conservative Party government's abandoned plan to privatize community lab testing provincewide.
Doug Wylie's office said in a statement Friday that he will examine procurement and contracting processes.
He plans to make a report available early next year.
The Opposition NDP had asked Wylie to investigate the deal, saying Premier Danielle Smith's government cannot be trusted to determine or divulge what went wrong.
In August, Health Minister Adriana LaGrange cancelled the handling of community lab testing by private provider Dynalife after months of complaints of long wait times and service bottlenecks in Calgary and the southern region.

#f#c#hmmm a few things i'm disappointed with#this film is supposed to be fresh or at least well conserved but it feels pretty expired given how much grain there is#guy who sold it to me was like oh its cinema film it doesnt have expiration date also idk the production date. it was from 2019.#we can say 2019 is recent but it's literally half a decade old idk#but maybe i am underexposing i should have done a proper exposure latitude test before going and using 15 rolls on an important trip.#also maybe the color temp filter is interfering with the lens sharpness because the lens is supposed to be much better than this#However what use is a sharp lens if it just. misses focus anyway.#and it does seem to be misfocusing consistently#hmmmm#also the graininess might actually be the lab developing it poorly#which would suck

I've been really captivated by the royal albatross nest cam live stream
I mean, look at this little guy, he's just a fluffy loaf with a big beak
He just hangs out in his nest being cute and getting fed. Occasionally, he plays with a stick (see above).
He's very talkative when his folks come round to feed him.
He can't fly yet but makes some good effort stretching his big floofy wings
Here's the link to watch!

There's not a whole lot for me to say about the Michael and Willow situation that I haven't already said the last time I ever gave a damn about Willow. She never recovered from being raised in a cult. She chose Michael because he came with a new cult for her to be ingratiated in.
Of course Michael blackmailing Nina to stay away from Willow is disturbing. What's more disturbing is that when Willow finds out, it's more likely for her to thank Michael for knowing what's best for her instead of being pissed at him.
#general hospital#willow tait#michael corinthos#willow and her stepford wife shit gives me the ick these days#michael and willow have always given me the ick#this is why i just ignore them because they were developed in a lab to appease conservative viewers

This is *somewhat* similar to the bracelet I posted about yesterday, except it's completely different. The Fahlo bracelet didn't come with any shark tracking information (because they messed up and sent me a dolphin instead, which is fine but a shark would have been better). Anyways, this bracelet I bought for myself!! It was bought in 2021 at a time when I was looking for something that I could preserve some of my mother's ashes inside of. I had no idea this was what I wanted until it popped up in my feed on Instagram one day, and I knew then that it was the perfect way ❤️.
-- It's call a Legend Bracelet! As you can see by the bracelet, and as you'll see described in the second photo, "One capsule is empty - fill it with sand / earth or something meaningful. The other capsule - comes filled with sand / earth from an area in the world we are helping to protect. A reminder to stay connected to the endangered places and species around the world."
In the case of my bracelet, a piece of ghost netting fills the other side. Ghost nets are responsible for countless shark fatalities. They get tangled in the nets and drown, because they are unable to move. Majority of sharks need to be constantly moving to keep water flowing over their gills.
"Crafted from eco & vegan friendly materials. Made from the bark of cork trees."
What you DON'T see described is this,
"The process helps extend the tree’s life expectancy and increases it's CO2 absorption."
AND
"Up to 50% of profits donated to charities fighting to protecting the environment & endangered species."
My specific bracelet helps to protect the sharks!🦈 Obviously, sharks are animals I'm pretty passionate about. Follow Your Legend has partnered with the Bimini Shark Lab to "help save sharks and protect our oceans"
The COOLEST part about my bracelet is that it came along with not only a sticker, BUT ALSO information about a Tiger Shark named Dani! (Ironically Tiger Sharks are my absolute favorite species of shark. So bonus points!) Through the card provided, (and the QR code on the back) I am able to access both information about Dani herself and tracking information about her whereabouts!🦈
*Unfortunately, with this being bought in 2021, her tracker has either fallen off or something terrible has happened 😔 because there have been no current further updates on her.*
Regardless though, as sad as that may be, I'm still super happy to have bought and contributed to the efforts of Legend Bracelet! There are numerous other bracelets that support different causes/animals and I'd encourage everyone to look into them!!🙌😁

I think the main difference I notice between the average USAmerica leftist and Brazilian leftist can be attributed to the fact that Brazil had a dictatorship, that was fought with tooth and nails to get rid of, and past that we got universal healthcare and voting rights again. I wish I could say all of Latin America is like this since so many of us had dictatorships but I don't know that many people from other countries (if you're latino please tell me), i think the average brazilian leftist understands there's no worth on peacefully resisting and if you want something, you need to fight or you'll be take and killed, or silenced, or "suicided". I note in a lot of (mainly white) USAmerican leftists that they wait for the change to be made for them instead of going like "wait, I can be a catalyst for changes" even if they're small.
#bernardo talks a lot#idk there's this difference specially on how they view the violence of the oppressed as equal to the violence of the oppressor which I want#to put under a microscope and stidy it in a lab setting#this sense that the world will change for the better alone#while on brazil we had baby steps constantly towards a better xountry#then that conservative ass came along and undid 30 years of work#with right propaganda imported straight from USA#most of the rightganda here is imported#even the queer infighting is imported#I've met the real actual queer community and they're a bunch of fags that couldn't care less about identity#and then i see Brazilian youth in the internet being fed this american right agenda thst there's a right way to be queer#and I BEG THEM TO PLEASE GO OUTSIDE#i think our conservatives were also way tamer before the imported rightganda#oh btw USA intervened here to make the dictatorship happen and then in 2016 (impeachment of an elected left president)#and then 2018 (election of a dictatoe wanabe that can't even talk coherently)

Fahlo allows you to track animals; shark, dolphin, polar bear, lions, sea turtles, elephants, penguins, and even giraffes!! Who know what animal is next to track!?!?
Not only is tracking them cool but we are helping Fahlo’s partnerships too. The bracelets that come with the cards are cute and fits everyone (and as someone who has a lot of allergies I would just like to say that no reactions occurred when I first started to wear these bracelets- must be the magic).
