I wish Connor’s asexuality was explored more

As an autistic queer Degrassi fan (and also because it’s pride month), I would like to take this time to remind everyone that Connor Delaurier is canonically asexual. He’s also most likely on the asexual spectrum because of his autism, which I guess would make him neurosexual (please correct me if I’m wrong- I’m not ace-spec). There’s an episode where he literally says that he never wants to have sex and that even the concept of sex is disgusting to him. He also says that he doesn’t want to because of “the textures and the smells”, which is pretty obviously a sensory thing. I hate it when people straight up refuse to acknowledge this scene and i just wish that they actually had a plot about it instead of just briefly mentioning it and then literally never bringing it up again.

Cannon Autistic Character

Connor DeLaurier from Degrassi: The Next Generation is a character I think about semi regularly in terms of autistic representation. It was both kind of a big deal that a show in 2008 introduced a black autistic character. Admittedly there have been very few black autistic characters in media since. But at the same time he didn't get many episodes that focused on him and the ones that did were spotty at best. They use the terms Aspergers instead of autism. In the later seasons that he's in he ends up getting in a relationship with another character Jenna and I actually really liked how that was handled. I especially liked how they had conversations around his sensory needs and how that overlapped with their relationship. But even then they got a couple episodes focused on their relationship but during those seasons Connor didn't have any solo episodes. They introduced this really cool character who had a lot of potential and then just didn't do much with him. Overall I really like how he's written. He's portrayed as compassionate and a good friend as well as a good boyfriend to Jenna. Especially for a teenager. And they didn't really fall into tropes. Which was pretty impressive considering he was first introduced in 2008. But at the same time the lack of plots focused on Connor felt like a major missed opportunity. -Mod Dragon
