Rewind to Recharge: Entry # 1
Last year, after the mass evacuation of Yellowknife because of the wildfire situation, I eventually made my way to Vancouver Island, which I’d planned before everything went, well, the way it went. Finding myself in need of a reset and recharge this year, for different reasons, it made sense to go to my happy place and do the same. So here I find myself again in Courtenay, in the delightful cozy…

What The Neighbours Are Up To: What's up with RIMPAC?
A parade of 12 US navy planes appeared over Comox What The Neighbours Are Up To In Comox (RIMPAC) It’s been an unusual near year, after hyper-extending my knee in a cycling accident in Winnipeg last year. However, I am finally on the mend, thanks to a great physiotherapist. It’s partly due to daily workouts at the 19 Wing Fitness Centre at the airforce base in Comox. It’s great to have a gym…

"B.C. Members Demand Repatriation Of Japs," Winnipeg Tribune. July 1, 1943. Page 7. ---- By The Canadian Press OTTAWA, July 1. - Ultimate disposition of the Japanese minority in Canada likely would be decided at the peace conference when the war was over, Labor Minister Mitchell told the House of Commons Wednesday night.
He was replying to requests from many British Columbla members for a statement of government policy on post-war handling of the Japanese problem.
Several of the B.C. members demanded a declaration that the Japanese would be repatriated to Japan when the war is over, and all declared the problem should not be returned to British Columbia to handle it alone.
Mr. Mitchell said it was fairly certain that this problem would be a subject of International settlement when the peace was arranged. Meanwhile, it was the government's policy to keep Japanese out of defense areas, to keep them from concentrating, and to make them as self-sup- porting as possible.
Angus MacInnis (C.C.F., Vancouver East) spoke against repatriation, which, he said, would actually be deportation or exile for many of them.
A. W. Nell (Ind., Comox. Alberni), advocated repatriation and said he would subscribe to separation of the western provinces from Eastern Canada if the problem were thrown back upon British Columbia.
The discussion arose in committee of the whole on labor estimates in the war appropriation for the current fiscal year, particularly, an item of $3,000,000 for removal of enemy aliens from British Columbia coastal areas. The item was passed just before adjournment of the House.
H. C. Green (Prog. Con., Vancouver South), claimed that British Columbia people had been used as pawns in dealings between Canada and Japan, and added that the Japanese must be considered the problem of all Canada, not just British Columbia alone.

As I was visiting friends on Vancouver Island I decided to drop by 40 Knots Winery in the Comox area. I visited the winery last year and sampled their wines on the patio. At this visit, the 2022 white wines have not yet been bottled at 40 Knots Winery but was told that bottling will be happening soon. So during this visit to the winery, I sampled their 2021 vintage white wines. I was…
