MOST ICONIC BIRD CALL BRACKET: ROUND ONE: MALLARD DUCK vs. COMMON CUCKOO
IN THE BLUE CORNER, we have a returning crowd favorite, the feathered showman of the ring, the mallard duck!
with that glossy bottle-green head and that perfectly oiled plumage, this wrestler looks like he means business. this dabbling duck might prefer to peacefully forage for food underwater, but don't let that fool you - this is a bird that knows how to hold its own in a fight. similar to most ducks, this wrestler can be identified by a deep, loud quack - powerful, but endearing.
IN THE RED CORNER, this is no broken clock - it's the common cuckoo!
there's nothing common about this bird. this avian powerhouse is a master of deception and disguise, laying its eggs in the nests of other birds. even that barred plumage is part of its trickery, resembling an eurasian sparrowhawk and striking fear into the hearts of its opponents. and that call? ladies and gentlemen, if you are a fan of novelty clocks, you are surely in for a treat here. listen to that two-syllable coo-coo! is the cuckoo bird ready to swoop in and steal the show? let's find out!

July 28, 2023 - Common Cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) Requested by: datruechelsea Breeding in much of Eurasia, these cuckoos winter in parts of central and Southern Africa and some areas of South and Southeast Asia. They feed on insects, especially caterpillars, as well as spiders, snails, the eggs and nestlings of small birds, and occasionally fruit. Females lay their eggs in the nests of a variety of other bird species and chicks evict the host birds’ eggs and chicks. The chicks also expel a foul-smelling liquid that helps repel predatory mammals.

Top 5 bird songs
I'm not a huge connoisseur, and this list will include bird calls, which are technically different, but let's go:
1. Yellowhammer (so good it inspired a famous piece of classical music)
2 (shared). Common cuckoo and chiff-chaff (I like how they actually say their own names)
4. Rose-ringed parakeet (invasive species, but nice sound)
5. Greater white-fronted goose (like a greylag, but more pleasant to listen to. the sound of winter)

BRACKET A
Common Cuckoo (Cuculus canorus)
They are really the brood parasites ever. If a mother cuckoo sees that the host bird has pushed her giant baby egg out of the nest, she will kill all of the host’s eggs as revenge, as if her giant baby wouldn’t have likely done that anyway. Cuckoos are also mimics, not just in their calls, but in their EGGS. Cuckoo eggs have been recorded mimicking over one hundred host species’ eggs.
Spot the cuckoo.
I can’t.
VERSUS
Tawny Frogmouth (Podargus strigoides)
To capture their insect prey during the day when they’re not actively hunting, they open their highlighter yellow mouths and wait for something to land on them. Like if a Venus flytrap was a bird. Their Wikipedia page has a whole section on why they’re not owls.
#I actually can spot the cuckoos they’re both on the left#common cuckoo#tawny frogmouth#bracket a#tournament poll
