I've been seeing a post on my dash where some USAmerican tumblrina feels sorry for the rest of the world because we don't have Halloween, and that we should steal it for ourselves, too.
I just... uuuugggghhh. Dear worried USAmerican tumblrina: please do not feel sorry for us, at least not about that particular issue.
Like. As far as Finland goes (but I'm 100% certain this applies to a bunch of other countries all over the globe too), our supermarkets and our shopping centres are trying their absolute hardest to shove Halloween down our throats. They really, really try. From Halloween themed doughnuts to Halloween balls and Halloween garlands (for our Halloween trees?? I really have no idea), it's all over the place. It may not actually be celebrated to the extent it is in the US, but it certainly cannot be escaped, and as long as there's plastic crap to sell, it's not going away.
If I could, I'd shove all that nonsense into a cargo container and return it to where it came from. But I can't! You'll catch me dead before you'll catch me buying a Halloween themed Runeberg torte, though.
#and I'm saying all this as someone who likes the Halloween aesthetic and the spooky scary skeletons and all that!#also I'm not saying Halloween is not *celebrated* here at all. there are Halloween parties and even some trick-or-treaters#I think the parties are fine. they predate the commercialization actually#I remember a friend threw a Halloween party when we were kids and we did cute little homemade vampire looks#that was fun! that was a good time!#but all the plastic crap that's being sold to us these days that sheds microplastics when you as much as look at it? that's not fun#and trick-or-treating is not super fun either because we already have a native go-door-to-door-begging-for-candy holiday before Easter#call me an old curmudgeon but twice a year is too much. no child needs that amount of sugar; no adult needs to have that amount of goodwill#so if anyone tries that imported nonsense at my door I will 100% not open. maybe yell at them through the door to piss off if they persist#td;dr: sometimes I just feel so done with the way USAmerican culture is shoved down our throats all the time everywhere

#stinks to see how many rrr fans have dipped out#on the one hand: I totally get it cuz it’s a single movie and maintaining unlimited enthusiasm for it indefinitely#is an unreasonable expectation#BUT ON THE OTHER HAND!#I’m autistic and actually can maintain unlimited enthusiasm for something pretty much for life lmfao so I can’t relate#I also just feel sad to see how fandom culture moves so much quicker now#cuz there’s a constant never-ending deluge of ‘content’ assailing us from all sides#at all times#so it’s very easy to just burn through something and move onto the next thing#like fast food#not to get snooty about it but it does just feel like another symptom of the ever-increasing SPEED of consumption culture#and the shortening of attention spans that coincide with that#idk at the end of the day I’m just weird for forming lifelong attachments to films & shows#that I rewatch over and over again forever instead of getting into new stuff#so I secretly wish everyone in my fave fandoms could be like me and we could exist in a non-commercial state of suspended time forever#I can dream

I've been commissioned to write 20,000 characters on RAVE for a widely distributed mainstream magazine, basically an introduction for newcomers. Honestly, I don’t even know where to start. The truth is, I’d love to just rant about all the issues that everyone keeps diagnosing but nothing ever changes:
The shift of culture into a strictly business model
The absence of artistic managers in clubs
Competition over collaboration (or collaboration limited to tight-knit interest groups)
Increasing commercialization
The looming shadow of yet another economic crash, closing the cycle
Clubs dumping the responsibility for attendance solely on the collectives throwing the parties (a lazy and crude post-COVID tactic)
A total lack of respect for music in favor of catering to a mediocre audience (by mediocre, I mean those without any musical awareness), so long as the drinks keep flowing
Escalating hedonism and TikTok-ification
The loss of the old-school approach (aspiring DJs used to put in years of work to learn the craft; now it’s all about “average but loyal”)
An obsession with pointless popularity contests and awards
Sectarianism over quality and freshness
Honestly, I had to take a step back because all these factors have really shaken my belief in the value of engaging with the broader rave scene. I’m using this break to reconnect with the original ideals, refresh my knowledge, and seek alternatives.
I think I’ll focus on encouraging readers to maintain high standards, choose their events mindfully, avoid chasing trends, and be guided by their authentic reactions to music—the kind that, for me, used to create incredible experiences at parties, where smoke and strobe lights offered an escape from the toxic world outside.
It’s no surprise that my friends are losing interest in going out when the toxicity they’re trying to escape is staring them down in four walls marked with the empty and overused slogan of PLUR.
