Down Among the Sticks and Bones & Come Tumbling Down have such a good sibling relationship. Like yea I love you yeah I’m sorry yea I know you needed someone to care about you and that didn’t happen but I went through it too and you’re a little monster now and you have to die. And it’s gonna hurt forever.
Anyway the wayward children series absolutely obliterates me because it HURTS and I know if I was in this would I should’ve been sent to that world slightly to the left or ours where I’d finally feel at home

January Reads
I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy
My non fiction read for the year! I listened to the audio book for this one which I definitely recommend. Jennette McCurdy deserves only good things for the rest of her life.
5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Come Tumbling Down by Seanan McGuire
Wayward Children #5! Such an underrated series. Jack and Jill and the moors are my favorite. Also it's gay.
5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree
Queer cozy fantasy! I loved how chill and kind this book was.
5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
I think about this book daily. The way everything tied together in this book was brilliant. I loved the concept of the reveurs in particular.
5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas
Ah the faerie books. I finally gave in and read this. It was fine. It was very basic fantasy romance. It wasn't bad, it was just unfortunately overhyped. Don't love the mc though she's kinda annoying.
3.75/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨️
Return of the King by JRR Tolkien
Lord of the rings my beloved! I could scream about any lotr book forever so I'm just gonna say Samwise Gamgee is the character ever and I love faramir and he deserves only good things forever. Also the ending of this series takes my heart out and stomps on it.
5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
In the Lives of Puppets by TJ Klune
Tj Klune is a master of found family and I will read everything he writes forever. This book also had an autistic ace mc, an anxious roomba, and a sadistic nurse droid and I adored every single one of them.
5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Red Rising by Pierce Brown
I feel like I should like this book more than I did. The mc just felt too perfect and like a societal ideal of masculinity that I really didn't care about that much. And I think to some extent it may have been the point but it still felt off to me. Started this in print and switched to audio cause the writing was not my favorite. Idk if I'll continue this series or not.
3/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Piranesi by Susanna Clarke
I went into this thinking it was about a satyr because of the cover. I was disappointed a few chapters in when I realized it was not. I did however really enjoy this book anyway. Very interesting how it resolves.
5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J Maas
Definitely better than acotar. Feyre's somewhat less annoying. Still think this series is overhyped but I do get it now. Also I don't get why everyone acts like this is straight porn. It's so tame lol but I read fanfic so 🤷. I do appreciate that this book went more into the politics of the world. Definitely made it more interesting.
4.5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨️

Give me all of the info there is about Gideon please
There really isn’t much. He’s a traveler like jack and jill, looks like he was called by the drowned gods and either he gave himself over, or he was a drowning pirate who they “saved”- given the tentacle leg and the pirate like red clothes.
He’s nosy, thinks he’s hot but only to be stared at from afar. He’s to be worshipped as high priest, ya know? It’s unclear if he knows how to fight, I’d believe either way, but if he can he doesn’t look like it.
That’s about it.

🌩️ Come Tumbling Down by Seanan McGuire (Wayward Children Series Book 5)
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
“Whoever said heroism was fair?“ she asked. "It’s the unfairest thing of all. ‘Come, oh human child, and learn to swing a sword for the sake of people who’ve decided the thing you’re best for is dying in their name.’ We were lambs for the slaughter, all of us, and if we’ve survived, it’s not because we’re special. Come on. Let’s be heroes one more time.”
Jack is back! The powers of the Moors are shifting as Jill steals Jack’s body and the latter must ask for help from her old friends to bring balance back to her home.
I actually started reading this book back in July when I was on my Wayward Children kick, but I stopped because the beginning of this book felt kinda slow as they struggled on getting back to the Moors. But I started it over again and finished it in two sittings!
I think it was mostly timing and I loved the story, the monstrosities, the science, and the lore of the Moors, the balance of things. I also loved how much they spoke about what it means to be a hero. Since I’m back in the swing, I’ll be reading Book 6: Across the Green Grass Fields.

Book Review – ‘Lost in a Moment and Found’ (#8 Wayward Children) by Seanan McGuire
A girl runs away from an unsafe home to work in a mystical shop… Genre: YA, Fantasy, LGBTQIA+ No. of pages: 146 Welcome to the Shop Where the Lost Things Go. If you ever lost a sock, you’ll find it here. If you ever wondered about favorite toy from childhood… it’s probably sitting on a shelf in the back. And the headphones that you swore that this time you’d keep safe? You guessed…

"Would it have killed her to go jogging once in awhile?" she asked, a note of fear behind the peevishness. She was going into battle while wearing a body whose limitations she didn't understand and had no time to learn. "I swear, 'I'm going to become a deathless creature of the night' is not a substitute for a comprehensive fitness plan."

best books of 2023 #4
Come Tumbling Down- Seanan McGuire
These are books that I read in 2023. They were not necessarily published in 2023.
I love a good quest, and this series does them very well. This one felt a bit darker than the earlier books in the series, but it didn't feel out of place-- more like a natural development given the nature of the plot. As always, the book was short, but it packed a lot into so little pages and was pretty much cover-to-cover action, with a great ending. The characters were, as always, brilliant. I don't think we got any new characters, but I loved seeing the old characters develop further-- especially as they were all at different points in their own narrative arcs. The worldbuilding also interacted with the characters and character development in a very interesting way that I rarely see, and that was really cool to read about. The relationships between the characters were very well-written and, as always, the feeling of found family was very present throughout.

Started posting a new fic this past week based on Seanan McGuire's Wayward Children series.
Two snippets from Come Tumbling Down led to this fic. First, Gideon, high priest of the Abbey of the Drowned Gods, telling Jack "I never lose" and her response "I'm counting on it." And second, the idea that the drowned gods would have preferred Cora to Gideon. So here is my take on what might have happened if she'd stayed rather than returning to her world of origin. - Fic is complete, I'll post a chapter per week until finished.
Content warnings: There will be a blood mention and discussion of human sacrifice (topic is why it isn't going to happen) in ch 2.
