Everything ✨Onward✨ in the 2022 Pixar Character Encyclopedia! 📖
Today, an updated version of the Pixar Character Encyclopedia has been released!
It includes all Pixar films up to Lightyear, which means...yes, Quest Masters!! Onward is featured in this 200-something page book!
I decided to purchase the e-book and see all the pages for myself (cause really, I could not resist!) and six characters from this beautiful, exciting, needs more attention masterpiece make the cut from pages 224 to 229—comprising of Ian, Barley, Laurel, Wilden, Colt, and The Manticore!
But that isn't all the Onward rep that's in this book...
See for yourself! 🔎
Some thoughts...
After seeing just Ian on the front cover of this book for weeks leading up to its release, I’m delightfully surprised and pleased that they included Barley on the inside front cover! and that both he AND Ian are on the table of contents page! thank you book for recognizing how important these bros are and how important they are to each other by putting them together! 😁
If you look carefully on the name borders of Ian and Barley's character pages, I think Guinevere makes a cameo! I wanna say those are her wheels...
Also LOVE the side borders! That has the concept art of the back cover of the Art of Onward book written all over it!
I really appreciate just how much they emphasize that Ian has discovered he has these strange, new magical powers within himself! Not only because it doesn't just happen to anyone (only those with the magic gift can do it), but because Ian didn't know he had them in the first place! of course this might just be me being bias on my love of the "magic that has been with a person all along is finally awakened" trope lol
also that's Barley's presence makes Ian more confident in himself! honestly SO TRUE!! and lol [his] face resembles his father's, a little on the nose but YES!!!!
I really treasure how they say Barley loves his family more than anything on his page! In fact, they pretty much say it twice! it's that important!
and that he doesn't care what anyone else thinks! Magic is what he believes in even if it seems like a waste of time and nothing worth spending time on to others...it's his belief in magic still existing in their world that saves the fountain from being torn down!
OMG "cast protects mysterious injury..." well, we all know it's from doing something Barley thought was a good idea, but even the book doesn't know what happened...but mysterious?...as in mysterious circumstances, perhaps? something way out of the oridinary? hmm...now that intrigues me... 👀
I love that they highlight Laurel missing having Wilden around, Colt may be her boyfriend, but she still cares for her sons' father!
Man, I didn't think her protein shake would be something I'd magnify on often, but I had no idea until I looked that it was chocolate flavored! guess chocolate can be be green in this world...
Oooooh, Wilden loved thinking about the old days and had a soft spot for adventure! I LOVE THAT A LOT! I don't think that's something that's thought about a lot...
Colt plans on becoming the fastest cop in town! not just fast, but the fastest! That is awesome!
Also interesting to know that he polishes his hooves...
The Manticores's tattoos aren't JUST tattoos! They're tattoos of some of her past adventures! NICE!

How do you think Onward handled the mom character? Did her relationship with her sons have anything in common with the one you and your sister you have with your mother?
I think they did a pretty good job! I love Laurel, she’s so cute. You can tell she loves her boys so much. My mom is a little bit more “tough love” than Laurel, but she’s similar to my mom in the sense that you can tell she has lost something dear. But instead of letting the grief consume her, she made the decision to focus her energy into her kids. That’s not an easy decision for a parent who has just lost their partner and is about to raise two young children on their own. That’s not an easy decision at all, so I’m grateful that my mom gave my sister and I such happy childhoods, much like Laurel did for Ian and Barley.
I especially loved the scene where she fights the dragon. I’m reading too much into this, but the way I saw it, she was attempting to shield her sons from the bad things in life, as if the dragon were a manifestation of death. Unfortunately, that’s not something she can fight off forever, and eventually the boys have to face it on their own, each in their own ways. Ian has to face the concept of death, the big bad monster with no real shape: the dragon. On the other hand, Barley has to face death in a more literal sense. He needs to speak to their dad. He needs closure. He needs to learn to let go. Death has always been a part of their lives, and I think Ian and Barley—more than most people their age—have a greater understanding of the reality of death.
Also, you didn’t ask this, but I want to mention Colt (I had to look up his name). I sooooo appreciate that they didn’t make him the villain or a bad guy. Yes, he tries to stop the boys at one point, but only because he’s seriously concerned that they’re going to get themselves hurt or in trouble. He’s not perfect, and he’s not their father, but he makes their mom happy, and he wants to be a part of their family. My stepdad is very similar. He was also introduced into my life at a later age, and like Colt, my stepdad has made a point to show that he is not jealous of my dad in any way. He knows that my dad will always have a place my family’s heart, and he respects that. I just really like that what they did with Colt’s character

Onward Fan Art Shout Out - 10
Theme: The Ensemble Cast!
And now, for the 10th ever post of this fan art-sharing series, I give you: art of the Onward ensemble cast!
I'd love to give a hand to all these artists who managed to incorporate at least 5 different characters from this epic movie and put them into all these artworks! Drawing a lot of different characters and finding room for each of them in a single piece is definitely no easy feat for some, so I admire these guys for drawing more than just Ian and/or Barley and for taking the time to capture the whole world of Onward!
So here are 8 pieces featuring several members of the Onward cast drawn in different art styles!
Artists
denarmen - this piece actually came from a magazine but I couldn't resist sharing it cause I really love it! I love the style, the colors, and that they included some very minor characters you don't often see in onward promo material such as the waitress from the Manticore's Tavern and one of Ian's friends
felipegoularts_a113 - this one's very cute! and idk why but the pixie dusters and Guinevere at the bottom being all center stage with that light fog around them has me think they're about to put on a dance number or something lol it's awesome!
ozigimuch - I really like how this one captures different moments from the film at once from Ian casting the Arcane Lightning to Guinevere driving off, and I wanna say the bottom left corner is Wilden underwater pressing on the tile that saves the boys from drowning!
kellyb.artistry - I love the idea of these guys being on a film strip! it definitely gives off a cinematic vibe! especially since this group of characters in particular is considered the main cast of the movie
erwin.widmer - this poster is both EPIC and BEAUTIFUL!! there's just so much detail and complexity here! everyone looks awesome! also just wanna say Guinevere looks like a GODDESS
miss.smith.draws814 - I'm reminded of those film posters which just have the character's heads on them when I look at this drawing. also facial expressions are my favorite thing when it comes to character art, whether that's drawing it or looking at another work, and I really like the expressions done here!
kimagure_illustration - I love how this piece just pops with color and line art! and that the inanimate objects—Guinevere, the raven statue, and the Curse Dragon—are all treated as characters too! because they really should be and are meant to be treated as such!
syo__syo__a113 - I really enjoy the black and white aesthetic of this one! And how full-on anime style it is!

So small spoiler alert for Onward
You know how in the epilogue when Colt runs and takes his cap off, he is shown to have a gorgeous mane?
Well its funny to think that he had his hair like that the whole time, but fact is he doesn't.
In the beginning of the movie when Colt comes inside the house, he takes his cap off. And you can clearly see that his hair is short.
So did he grow it out? Or more hilariously, did he get mane extensions?

I'm thinking about magic trope episodes Onward the series would have. There would definitely be a body swap episode, one where someone's trapped in a dream and an episode where the adult characters would turn into kids. I love that last trope! Imagine Laurel and Colt get turned into 5 year olds and Corey being the oldest gets turned into a baby. You'd have a tiny headstrong Laurel giving Barley a hard time. Deliberately disobeying him, running off and getting into things she shouldn't. He sees where he gets his rebellious streak from and gets a new appreciation for how patient she always was with him. While Ian would take care of a young Colt who's awkwardly clomping along on legs are little too big for his body and turns out he's also painfully shy. It'd be a way to explore Ian's understanding of Colt a little more than the movie did. And then there'd be Corey the crazy kitten causing all kind of havok! She'd keep trying to play with her sword, climb on everything and yowl for attention. Plus she has wings and can breath fire! Imagine her climbing up Barley's pant leg when she wants food 🥺
