It's Moxie's Birthday! Pretty girl is now 2 years old and was so over me taking this photo. We are halfway to her first Speedstakes title which was my goal for her this year, I bet we go even further than that! This year is going to be focused on getting her CHIC number, we have eyes scheduled for March and I need to get her final hips and elbows done and find a place that offers shoulders.

A while back, I ended up getting a Beginner's Obedience Class for Elliot.

I was very nervous, but the first class went well!

They're force free and they gave us a clicker that I can easily use with one hand, A+!

Elliot did great. He had a big day beforehand (I didn't have much choice due to my schedule) and he was asleep any time we weren't practicing 😂

Which, hey, I wanted to practice relaxing with distractions and he was next to a barking dog. And I figured a sleeping dog isn't a nervous dog, so good by me.

I'll try to skip walking him beforehand next time and see if he can stay awake.

I'm so glad I took the opportunity (it was at least 50% off) because my brain struggles a lot with executive dysfunction and going to a class is a great way to work around that. And they're going to teach us more than I thought, even better!

Hey, I love your blog! <3 If you'd be willing, I'm absolutely begging you to tell me the worst things about rough collie ownership, because with every week that passes I get closer to saying "fuck it" and contacting a local breeder because collies seem Actually Genuinely Perfect but I have minimal herder experience so. Yeah ^^;

1- collies do not know how to shut up. they LOVE to bark, they think it's the most entertaining thing ever, and it's their default whenever their emotional stimulation gets above, like, 20%. you need to be on their ass from DAY ONE about managing the barking, or you'll end up with a dog that's irredeemably obnoxious. teaching them to be silent is an unstoppable force and they are the immovable object. like two magnets on the same polarity, no matter how hard you force it, never the two shall meet.

2- HOPE YOU LIKE DOG HAIR. i vacuum my house from top to bottom every week and i fill up 3 full canisters of primarily collie hair each time. there is dog hair in my shower. there is dog hair in my freshly-laundered sheets. there is dog hair in my food. it is omnipresent. (and you may think, ah but zoe, i'll just get a smooth collie instead! congratulations you now have the same amount of hairs but instead of forming tumbleweeds they fly everywhere). and while rough collies do provide some absolutely heavenly snuggles, keeping their feathering combed out and free of debris is such a pain. if you bring your dog on a hike through the woods, just know that you WILL be returning with an entire tree's worth of leaves, sticks, dirt, and ticks attached to your dog.

3- their narrow little heads hide deceptively huge brains. they are smart as hell, and for stellina at least she always defaults to using that power for Evil. if you do not entertain and engage them, they will find a way to entertain themselves - whether that's ripping up your yard, stealing things they shouldn't have, or back to their default favorite of Shout Loudly, they won't let you get away with not giving it your full effort (especially as adolescents, holy shit was stellina an annoying teenager). if you don't have herder experience, definitely try and meet some dogs or talk with people who own them - colies are very "decaf" herder IMO, but they're still very much herders and will share a lot of those idiosyncrasies.

with all that being said.... yeah they are pretty awesome dogs actually and this stuff pales in comparison to their good attributes IMO. i think they're criminally under-suggested when it comes to people looking for a family dog, a hiking buddy, a nice active companion, or an all-around farm dog. definitely be really careful about your breeder, because BYBs are rampant. but if you are expecting me to be like "oh no don't get a collie don't do it" you are very wrong because yes get the baby 👀
