Kwanzaa was first celebrated in 1966 after having been created by professor of Africana studies, activist, and author Maulana Karenga to help give identity, purpose, and direction to African Americans. Each of the seven days of Kwanzaa (between December 26 and January 1) correspond to the Nguzo Saba (the Seven Principles): Umoja - Unity - To strive for and to maintain unity in the family, community, nation, and race. Kujichagulia - Self-Determination - To define and name ourselves, as well as to create and speak for ourselves. Ujima - Collective Work and Responsibility - To build and maintain our community together and make our brothers’ and sisters’ problems our problems and to solve them together. Ujamaa - Cooperative economics - To build and maintain our own stores, shops, and other businesses and to profit from them together. Nia - Purpose - To make our collective vocation the building and developing of our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness. Kuumba - Creativity - To do always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it. Imani - Faith - To believe with all our hearts in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders, and the righteousness and victory of our struggle. #HappyKwanzaa #Kwanzaa #Umoja #unity #kujichagulia #selfdetermination #ujima #collectiveworkandresponsibility #ujamaa #cooperativeeconomics #nia #purpose #kuumba #creativity #imani #faith #happyholidays #DCAboveall #staywhole #justice #poeticjustice #healing #poetsofig https://www.instagram.com/p/CX94Im8LZuJ/?utm_medium=tumblr

We are responsible and proving that we are willing to work hard. We are advancing when we show teamwork, sincere love, and regard. We are offering our assistance and rewarding a nurturer who planted the seed. We are asking the hard questions, and everyone has an opportunity to lead. We are talking about honest concerns and expectations in daily conversation. We are creating safe spaces that encourage accountability and innovation. We are finding patience in our positions, and we’re following through on our plan. We are raising more competent children, full of promise, who believe “yes we can.” We are sharing stories on how our family rose above and how others survived. We are participating in unity projects because we know that together we thrive. We are creating countless leaders who enjoy bringing solutions to any town. We are building intentional communities of affirmation, and peace can be found. We are making time to acknowledge and honor what we and others do best. We are so strong in numbers that everyone has an opportunity to truly rest. Ujima is Collective Work and Responsibility. In Kwanzaa, this is the third day. We will weigh this principle carefully and give grace. #goodmorning #habarigani #ujima #kwanzaa #kwanzaa2020 #collectiveworkandresponsibility #thevegswitchup #theplantbasedintrovert https://www.instagram.com/p/CJV_zmSlApS/?igshid=na06qp33a2tc

December 28, 2021 marks the third day of Kwanzaa. Ujima (Collective work and Responsibility): To build and maintain our community together and make our brothers' and sisters' problems our problems and to solve them together. On this day, we light the Black candle, one Red candle and one Green candle. Day three of Kwanzaa with mommy complete. So I ask Habari Gani? What’s the news? #kwanzaa #kwanzaa2021 #kwanzaawithmommy #Ujima #Collectiveworkandresponsibility #HabariGani https://www.instagram.com/p/CYDk5PbrvimS5Kbg3VCI9ymbWWwcE5doo6ibug0/?utm_medium=tumblr

Kedu. We still have our sale until December 31, 2021. Yesterday was day 2 (December 27) of Kwanzaa. That day was "Kujichagulia." It means "self-determination." The principle is "to define ourselves, create for ourselves, and speak for ourselves." You light the red candle on the first left of the black candle. Today is day 3 (December 28). This day is "Ujima." It means "collective work and responsibility." The principle is "to build and maintain our community together, and make our sisters' and brothers' problems our problems, and to solve them together." You light the green candle on the first right of the black candle. #sale #kwanzaa #King #Queen #unity #selfdetermination #collectiveworkandresponsibility #win https://www.instagram.com/motherlandofthings/p/CYDLyzml92L/?utm_medium=tumblr

Habari Gani? Ujima! The third principle is Ujima which means Collective Work and Responsibility. Without collective work and struggle, progress is impossible. In a society that focuses a lot on individualism, this principle reminds me that collectively we all have a responsibility. We are collectively responsible for our failures and achievements. This principle really reminds me of the importance of getting back to the ways of community. What I do to benefit others, benefits myself. What is of value needs to be shared. Even when there is conflict, there is harmony because of always considering of others, being patient, never forceful, etc. Ujima is also about restoring that which was damaged or destroyed on a historical and cultural level. Every effort counts no matter how small it may appear to be. How do you show up when it comes to taking responsibility collectively? Do you focus more on individualism or working together? Some questions that I am reflecting on today and wanted to share. #kwanzaa #kwanzaa2020 #ujima #collectiveworkandresponsibility https://www.instagram.com/p/CJWQkIiJQzv/?igshid=19z417imx8eiz
