Coldstar commander completed and ready to lead from the front
Somehow the second model in my main T'au color scheme is not another fire warrior (though more of those will come in the future)

The woundwort is still not finished on the account of me putting too much faith into bootlegs, waiting on some parts to cure after being glued :P
So instead I'll talk about something else, recently one of my friends dragged me back into Warhammer 40K after my not so pleasant episode with the series in 2020 and I found the little fellas called the T'au and omg do I love their designs.
The faction much like most of Warhammer is grim dark so aside from a passive interest in the story I don't particularly care for the background but I am 100% on board with the mechanical design.
Tumblr media
(Source undercut)
So here for example is the XV86 Coldstar Battlesuit most commonly used by the commander unit in the tabletop. And like everything about it just looks so cool and yet utilitarian, from the tripod feet, the relatively thin but maneuverable legs, obscenely stocky and chunky chest and arms, whole lot of thrusters on the backpack thats also mounted with additional weapons, and the sensor unit which is highly reminiscent of a Gundam design.
You can tell that these are:
1. Mass produced, they skimp out on armor when possible, like the legs for example, and the mechanical greebling is full present.
2. Expendable unlike the pilots, the chest and cockpit area is the most reinforced part of the suit, posing that the life of the pilot is a priority for the T'au.
And this suit is pretty template for the T'au, with all thier other direct combat mecha having a similar design with the monoeyed head, reinforced torso and arms, and the legs, even their bigger units like the Stormsurge suits carry this design philosophy.
They do however have stealth mecha units in the XV25 Stealthsuit and the XV95 Ghostkeel:
Tumblr media
(Source undercut)
The one on the left is the Stealthsuit and is about the size of a standard T'au infantry unit (around human height) but it's still a fully mechanized unit with a pilot instead of a exo suit and the Ghostkeel on the right is one of the larger mechs within the T'au military.
They both have that more rounded look as opposed to the blocky of the other units, they aren't as sharp and I think it's a great design philosophy to adapt for the "stealthy" units when attempting to differentiate them from the main force.
Not much to say really as I'm pretty amateur about my knowledge inti Warhammer, all I can say is that I am a big fan of the T'au designs and especially their mechs.

REINFORCEMENTS FOR AUN’SHAR
The response team lead by Commander Novastorm was intended to be the tip of the spear in the battle for Maynos. After his Orca dropship broke through the space marine fleet in orbit, however, he intercepted a distress signal coming from Tau forces already on the surface of the planet.
Tumblr media
1. The Orcas’ security team has been reassigned to Strike Team Burning Ember, to replenish their ranks after most of the lighter armored members met their demise at the hand of the Necrons. Trained to clear and secure the drop zone, as well as defend within the confines of their dropship, they will be an invaluable addition to the Protectors infantry.
Tumblr media
2. The Crimson Order crisis team is comprised of two iridium reinforced battlesuits, and four standard XV8 suits ,two of which are piloted by Shas’Vre rank veterans. The Order operates like a single organism, creating a strong phalanx with their shield generators around the Commander in one instant, then in the next scattering into two smaller teams led by the two Veterans, splitting the enemies’ attention as their Commander takes to the sky for a devastating aerial bombardment. Both of the veterans have equipped their suits with ritual blades, as they have each joined in a separate Ta’liserra, forming the sub-teams Crimson Dusk and Crimson Dawn, which, under the command of Commander Novastorm forms the Crimson Order.
Tumblr media
3. Shas’O May’nar Bo’ran, AKA Commander Novastorm, piloting his custom XV-85 Coldstar Commander battlesuit. Despite the warnings of Earth Caste engineers, Bo’ran has removed almost all of the safeties and fine tuned the tolerances on his controls to react to the slightest twitch of his finger. Compared to other Coldstars, his current battlesuit moves three times faster, and can preform VTOL almost instantaneously, at the cost of the thrusters requiring constant maintenance to function. Bo’ran has encouraged the pilots under his command to perform similar modifications to their suits, breaking the limit of what the common XV8 crisis team can be capable of. Beyond the Coldstar thrusters and high-output burst cannon typically seen on a XV-85, Bo’rans’ suit is had been outfitted with an ejection system, shoulder mounted fusion blasters, a multi tracker targeting system, and the prototype Supernova Launcher, a modified grenade launcher that can hurl plasma grenades great distances, setting fire to organics and melting metals.
Tumblr media
4. The Hammerhead gunship was intended to be used as a deterrent for enemies that would try to come close to the Orcas’ drop zone. Crewed by 3 skilled pilots, all work in tandem to fire pinpoint railgun slugs, decimating enemy armor from an incredible distance. The communication relay that was kept in its hull has been removed and left within the Orca, giving room for Aun’Shar and his infantry to board.
Tumblr media
.5. The Orcas’ drone bays have been emptied for the greater good and support the expeditionary force. The presence of drones were sorely missed by the survivors of Aun’Shars’ honor guard, who were not requisitioned drones with the assumption that they would not ever be under heavy fire. With the last of the Orcas’ cargo unloaded, it will be at greater risk on its journey back to the fleet, but if the life of an ethereal hangs in the balance, such risk becomes almost necessary to ensure his safety.
________________________________________
As the Orca roars back into the atmosphere, Aun’Shar climbs into the Hammerhead. It’s a tight fit with the number of soldiers packed in, but not uncomfortable. Slowly the Hammerhead floats into the dark recess of the vault, closely followed by the escort of battlesuits and drones. Aun’Shar squeezes by his warriors to look out the viewport at the Maynos sun, wondering if this will be the last time he sees it as the blackness swallows his gunship.

January painting! A bunch of different projects this month, which was fun. Firstly was the rest of the Crusader Squad i started last month, including a few Neophytes - i think my phone's camera is being quite generous to the colours here, they're a lot less cherry red in real life.
Next was a Coldstar Commander, which has been sitting on my desk for like four months ag this point while i play games with the strictly worse Enforcer Commander I painted a year ago - I assume this will change when the book comes out and the coldstar will become way worse.
Finally, half of a Fire Hawks kill team for a Badab War event I'm going to in February. Top priority for next month is to finish these, and then I'll try to paint something for the next meetup - which might be more marines (I have a dreadnought half-finished) but might be some Gondor instead. My goal is to paint (or sell) ten more models each month than I buy, so I need something with good metrics.

Meet Your Match Part 4
Chapter Master Ulfrich Graymane
Skin Color: Olive and well-worn from time in the sun.
Hair: Long dirty-blond hair, combed back only just enough to keep it out of his face.
Height: 8′5 (2.5m)
Weight: 370 lbs (167.8 kg)
Age: 149
Armor: Mark X Tacticus Power Armor, painted the grey-blue you would expect to find on the armor of Space Wolves and their successors. The inlet of each cauldron are painted yellow, and there are a handful of purity seals and other various trinkets and decorations spotted among the armor. An Iron Halo is planted firmly on his backpack.
Weapons: Frag and Krak Grenades, a Bolt Pistol, and a Thunder Hammer
"This war is growing stale; the Marshal is doing a fine job, but I know that if it was one of we Astartes at command, this would already be over."
====
High King Petir
Skin Color: Dark and grungy, as if the angles of his face casts permanent shadows regardless of the direction the light is cast upon it.
Hair: Long, black hair. Just looking upon it gives an idea of the sheer volume of it's grease, sticking together as if wet, despite it being dry.
Height: 6′1 (1.8m)
Weight: 140 lbs (63.5 kg)
Age: 42
Armor: An ornate set of Carapace Armor, painted maroon with a built-in refractor field. Although the armor is free from scratches or dents, it seems to give off an aura of paranoia, as if expecting a knife to it's back.
Weapons: An Archeotech Pistol and a Dueling Saber
"Knight Houses have always answered the call of duty, to serve the God-Emperor and His servants without the least complaint; the Tau are merely another test of faith, and though we have suffered losses, we remain ever-vigilant."
====
Shas'O Yo’vai Nighthawk
Skin Color: A light blue which seems to blend into the sky.
Hair: Short red hair allowed to hang down to her neck.
Height: 5′0 (1.5m)
Weight: 115 lbs (52.1 kg)
Age: 24
Armor: An XV86 Coldstar Battlesuit Chasis, equipped with an Drone Controller, and a Stimulant Injector, and paired with two MV1 Gun Drones
Weapons: A Flamer and a Fusion Blaster
"How will our fire drive the Imperium back if no victory seems to break through their endless ranks? Do our victories even matter when we're only holding, never advancing?"

Looking over the new Tau rules... - It’s lame there’s no Mont’ka - Farsight Enclaves is still in the base rules - You can use Commander Farsight at the exclusion of Ethereals. I don’t see any other benefits yet, though. At first it seemed like Farsight was kinda lame in this edition - He just has a statblock, the ability to reroll hits and wounds in melee 1/battle, and buffs his squad to add 1 to the Wound Roll within 9″ (Albeit, including in melee.)
Tumblr media
Notably, his stat line does not seem to change much for his new model, not even with his in-built anti-psyker Talisman. This seems lame.
However... Battlesuits are now Vehicles again. That that means, he can Tank Shock:
Tumblr media
Which... 10d6; more likely 12d6. That’s... A lot. That is going to be remarkably out of it’s weight class.
- Everything is a lot more modest, overall. Weaker profiles, etc. And Commanders (except Farsight) are hitting on 3+ now. But I’d like to point out the Commanders... Each seems to have a role
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Coldstar has Move 12, but pairs well with Strike and Fade to allow everyone to move 24″) ...I’ll note that this means Farsight should be particularly stand-out with a band of Flamethrower guys. Good for me, that’s my MO. Crisis Suits themselves are about what you would expect... But they do get a surprise in that they can now innately advance 6″ which is very nice. As was stated, Assault weapons are now way less common and you mostly need a Coldstar to use them. So choose your role carefully. Note that Gun Drones got a stealth upgrade since they are no longer divided into Drones and Non-Drones (That is, a Crisis Battlesuit now just HAS the drone weapons as part of it’s own profile) and so anything that buffs the Battlesuits also buffs the Drones. - !!! SHAPERS HAD A FUGGIN GLOW-UP
Tumblr media
6 attacks after charge, grants an entire squad of Carnivores 6+ Feel No Pain, and give their squad The Grisley Feast strategem automatically. Not that normal Kroot also get this, but only 5+. If you can eat someone in melee? That’ll be damn good, especially if you can get like a full squad of 20.
Not only that, but Kroot and Shapers both have Stealth - they get an innate -1 to-hit; that seems EXCELLENT. - Aun-shi is still around, pretty decent, and can now lead some kroot - Krootox hit on a 3+ at range if they are near other Kroot, and a 2+ in melee. Hounds can get a +1 to wound, which is nice with their 3 strength, but I feel like utilizing that is impractical and prevents you from eating your enemies properly. - You can now have some battlesuits behind a Tidewall Shieldline to give them cover, which is going to look very cool
Tumblr media
- The Farstalkers are here to stay, it seems:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And they’re good! Look at that: Precision, Lethal Hits, and Ignore Cover. The entire squad can now take aim at one character!

Major Takeaways I had from my first tournament
T’au are fighting an uphill battle right now. It’s sad, but true that right now we don’t have much that hits hard and we don’t have much staying power
1st turn is REALLY important for how we play. Since Kauyon doesn’t kick in till turn 3, the difference between 2 and 3 rounds of getting shot at is significant when it comes to your Kauyon Output. Plan accordingly to hide if you get 2nd turn
Strategic Reserves are your friends. Especially when fighting Space Marines, you need to keep your big targets off the table at the start of the game. My Stormsurge was Oath of Moment’d in 2 of my 3 games before it could get a single round of shooting off. If you’re playing a big crisis bomb or Stormsurge you need to keep it in reserves until you know you can shoot with it
Ghostkeel and Piranhas are our MVPs. I’m not including Tetras here because they’re Forgewold and hard to get, but these two did WORK. The durability of the Ghostkeel on my Home Objective is what made me present a challenge at all to my opponents, and the two Seeker Missiles on each Piranha plus the drone harassment are crucial to hurting enemy vehicles and knocking opponents off of objectives for secondaries
Ethereals are worth it for the CP alone. I had two Ethereals, one leading a strike team, the other alone, and the extra CP generation gave me some much needed flexibility. It allowed me to use great stratagems like Tank Shock and Grenades that I otherwise wouldn’t have the CP for. Plus if you put a gun drone on them, they act as a pretty good action monkey once you bring them in from Strategic reserves
STEALTH SUITS. Between the rerolls of 1s to wound for guided units, to Infiltrating with Stealth, to bring a cheap source Markerlights guiding, to the FREE once per game Rapid Ingress, this is a must have unit. I ran 3 minimum strength units and will likely be doing so indefinitely
Our enhancements are great! I used Exemplar of the Kauyon, Puretide Engram Neurochip (PEN for short) and Through Unity, Devastation and all of them came in clutch at different points of my games. In particular, the PEN was fantastic as it allowed me to Rapid Ingress 2 Crisis Bombs (for FREE with the Stealth suits) on my opponent’s turn two when I went second and it gave me the possibility to Overwatch a second time as well
It’s still possible to have fun in 10th. I lost 2/3 games, but my second loss went 54-56 and was one of the best 40K games I’ve ever played. Play your best, aim to have fun and don’t beat yourself up if you don’t do well. We got this, Shas’os!
For my personal list, I’m likely going to revise the armament of my second crisis team to have Fusion Blasters and Missile Pods as the Burst Cannons and Flamers are just useless against anything T5 or higher and might swap out the Coldstar commander for a Crisis Commander as the reroll 1s might be worth the lost movement and assault if I’m Rapid Ingressing the unit anyways
