Mama Bree, this is a weird thing to ask but: can you recommend any good fiction about witches and sorcerers? I've read LOTR and The Silmarillion but I'd like to branch out, maybe try something more modern, and I wondered if you had any faves.
I gotchu, fam. 😁
The Enchanted Forest Chronicles (Patricia C. Wrede)
The Codex Alera (Jim Butcher)
The Harry Dresden Series (Jim Butcher)
The Practical Magic Series (Alice Hoffman)
The Abhorsen Series (Garth Nix)
A Nameless Witch (A. Lee Martinez)
Uprooted (Naomi Novik)
Spinning Silver (Naomi Novik)
Sebastian (Anne Bishop)
Belladonna (Anne Bishop)
Toil and Trouble: 15 Tales of Women and Witchcraft
Wicked Witches: An Anthology of New England Horror Writers
If you want something more along the lines of a solid brick of high fantasy, I might also recommend The Ruins of Ambrai / The Mageborn Traitor by Melanie Rawn (if you don't mind that she's never going to finish the damn trilogy) or her Dragon Prince series (it was written in the 1980s and it shows, but it's very entertaining).
There's also a particular subset of Terry Pratchett's Discworld series that focuses on a group of absolutely wonderful witches. I recommend starting with Equal Rites (Granny Weatherwax et al) and The Wee Free Men (Tiffany Aching) and going from there.
Happy Reading!
#bruxtia#book recs#fantasy books#witchy books#witchy fiction#I have a lot of reference books but my fiction section is just as robust!#Bree answers your inquiries

It's amazing to me looking back and pinpointing some books and authors that were so foundational for my writing in really weird and specific ways, like @tamorapierce's Tortall series; Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy seres; @lilithsaintcrow's Strange Angels, Jill Kismet, and Romance of Arquitaine series; and Jim Butcher's Codex Alera series.
#elumish blogs#there are a ton of books that helped shape how i write#but there are oddly specific things i can pinpoint as coming from those authors/books#as well as from some books that are honestly not great and have a lot of issues but that also shaped my writing in weird ways

When reading a book, have you :
a. Finish a book, even when you dislike the mc until the end but love the story (What book?)
b. Finish a book, even when you dislike the story but love the mc (what book?)
c.Finish a book, even when you dislike the mc and story but love the worldbuilding (what book?)
d. Finish a book, even when you dislike the mc, story, worldbuilding but still finish it for whatever reason (what book?)
Mmmmmm, you know, I don't think any of these have directly factored into continuing or dropping a book. It's mostly about whether or not I'm enjoying myself, and I can do that with a main character I dislike, or a world I dislike, or...well, maybe not a story I dislike, but a plot I dislike? And I think you may have meant plot, because of course all of the other things factor into the story.
A. Books where I've read without ever liking the main character: The entire Doctrine of Labyrinths series. Oh, Felix is quite sympathetic at times and pitiable at others, and generally quite fascinating, and has quite a few things I like about him. But he's also deeply fucked up from his trauma, actively abusive in...uh, every relationship he has in the series except the ones where he's being abused, and like, kind of just a dickhead? A dickhead.
Also That Unauthorized Fan Treatise thing. I did finish it in a day and I was riveted by it, but good God I would want nothing to do with Gottie.
B. ....BANANAFISH? I love Ash so much, but the things that happen to him delve way into torture porn toward the end, like, it's not even contributing to the story or anything at that point. It's just "what else can we do to him?" and the ending was just such utter bullshit, but I did stick it out. Okay, this is a manga, not a book, but still.
C. Oh, hm. I dunno; I don't usually stick around a story for world building. Maybe HunterXHunter, which is another...anime. I didn't...hate Gon, but he's never been a big fave of mine; Killua was. And the story just completely derailed during Ant Hell Arc. But I would have given up on it if I hadn't been watching it with a friend.
Maybe Codex Alera? I really adored Tavi early on, but I grew less attached over time, and the plot was pretty paint-by-the-numbers, but the worldbuilding interested me despite also being a bit...overdone. Him.
D. The Mirror Empire. That book was so well written, and I did not enjoy it at all. Truly it was not for me from top to bottom. But I tried, and it was good, I just had not one bit of fun.

Then what the fuck do I with an idea I’m not going to develop
And I can’t use?
Here's the thing...ideas are easy. I have multiple folders on my computer full of outlines and starts of projects that, if I lived to be 100 and could devote every waking moment to them, I would never be able to finish. And I'm primarily a journalist and editor, I don't make a living creating in that way.
It's not the idea that makes good art. It's the work put into shaping that idea into a finished product, whether it's a painting, a sculpture, a novel, a short story, a song, a movie, a video essay, a quilt, a TTRPG adventure, or anything else. The best idea that's never finished will never be a great work of art because it's never finished. The worst idea can be an amazing work of art if the artist puts care and craft into creating it.
Side note: Author Jim Butcher of The Dresden Files got into an argument on a forum about exactly this. Someone else said that great ideas were most important in writing a novel. Butcher argued that even the worst idea could be turned into a great novel if the author put in the work. It escalated until Butcher said he'd prove it and asked the guy to give him not one but TWO of the worst, most trite and cliche and terrible ideas ever. He replied "Lost Roman Legions and Pokemon".
Furies of Calderon was the first book in the Codex Alera series and was Butcher's first book to be released in hardcover.

Codex Alera by Jim Butcher
I’ve been a big fan of Jim Butcher’s writing for years and years, but up until now have only read his Dresden Files series. It was time for me to jump head first into more of his writing.
A little backstory on this series; Jim was bet that he couldn’t write a good story based off a lame idea. Jim upped the ante when he countered that he could do just that, but based off two lame ideas chosen by the challenger. The ideas ended up being “The Lost Roman Legion” and “Pokemon”.
Is it precisely based off the idea of The Lost Roman Legion? Inconclusive....but the Roman inspiration is not only evident, but on prominent display. Much of the story is also military based, however my previous knowledge on the Lost Roman Legion is too insufficient to say yes or no.
Throughout the setting and landscape that this story is part of roam “Furies”. My initial interpretation of their description more closely resembled Elemental creatures similar to those you’d find in Dungeons and Dragons or other fantasy style games. At the same time, the appearance of these wild forces in nature, and the populations ability to harness their power and abilities was very much reminiscent of Pokemon.
The story was good pushing into great at times, I enjoyed the variety of characters and races that made up the world. The story line centers around Tavi, a lowly shepard living on the edge of wilderness, and showcases his rise to power and fame through the politics of Alera.
Jim Butcher exceeded my expectations with this series.

Hi there! I am back! How are you? I am well, I got super busy all of a sudden but I think it's getting back to normal? I don't know though. I have also been reading an ungodly amount, I finished a book this week, not too impressive I know. Just kidding! Very impressive! It was 1200 pages! Now I am on to the next one. Probably Killers Of The Flower Moon, I am very excited for the movie coming out later this year. I only read ebooks, so I might have to buy it instead of using Libby. I suppose that's a difficult decision I will have to make soon. Have you been reading much? Anything good? Any cool music you've been listening to lately? I've been listening to a lot of rap music and Radiohead, it's an... interesting pairing.
See you tomorrow....probably,
Tomb Anon
tomb anon!!!! hooray!!!!
i've never Killers Of The Flower Moon, i might check it out if it's good though! i have in fact been reading a lot recently, i've been re-reading a personal favorite series of mine! it's called Codex Alera, it's by Jim Butcher
i always listen to music honestly, but i've been getting back into a lot of The Crane Wives' songs. Radiohead and hip hop sounds like an. experience

I figured I’d put some of my ideas here, to be forgotten about. Or maybe so someone else will use them.
Anyways, first idea I’m putting into this post, is “serial reincarnator”. First thought of it because of a TV series where canonically, people have descendants that look exactly like them at some intervals. And this OC hijacked a system like that, and gets reincarnated into their family every 3 generations, or so. I feel like they’d be an interesting secondary character in a few ‘verses, but probably not as the main PoV character. Technically this OC also requires a magic system that allows people to interact with souls in some way, but that’s only for if they caused their endless reincarnation.
Second idea, is also an OC. This one is ageless, and, at least in theory, unkillable. But, people cannot accurately remember this person for long. If you only meet them in passing, this is not all that noticable, but to those the OC is close to, this effect is noticeable, because they can’t remember how they first met, or what the OC did with them more than a year ago. Tbh, that one probably isn’t particularly suitable for any story I can think of, but maybe someone else can think of a story where this character could actually end up fitting in.
Third, and final idea for today, is a “what if” for a specific setting. “What if more people could turn into/merge with their element?”, in the setting of Codex Alera. For those who don’t know, people who are good enough with Metal in that setting, can fuse with metallic objects, to a degree. And I want to see how that world would change, if people could do that with other elements. People turning into puddles/seamlessly joining a river, temporarily replacing statues, stuff like that. It’d probably be somewhat noticable to other users of the same element, though, and would only end up being used to avoid attacks, or get through otherwise impassible barriers.
