graf cup brainworms
we! deserve! a wta! laver! cup!
i mean, just look at the wta rankings. a wta laver cup would be a lot more competitive and balanced and fun than the atp version and it would also be grounds for a bunch of great player interactions that we deserve, so i'll be going over teams :)
graf cup is named after legend steffi graf, one of three singles players in the open era to win a calendar year grand slam. the other two are rod laver, who the laver cup is named for, and margaret court, a bigot. it will be held in berlin at uber arena, same location as the atp version. yk, if this was real.
also, i have no clue how teams are made for the actual laver cup. i just made these teams because i can. i'm the tournament director of this nonexistent tournament. what are you gonna do?
team europe
edit 4/23: i had no idea navratilova was such a piece of shit lord… alternative captain suggestions are much appreciated
team roster: ― iga swiatek ― aryna sabalenka ― daria kasatkina ― jasmine paolini ― mirra andreeva ― paula badosa
notes team europe:
― i NEED daria and natalia to give us some bomb ass graf cup vlogs. i just know they would give us the best interviews and behind the scenes look at how it all goes.
― aryna and jasmine are both great in singles and doubles so that's def something they can use to their advantage
― honestly seeing players i like interact with each other was like. a major part in selecting these teams. idk i just feel like everyone here is so lovely and amazing and that's only going to be heightened because of the not super competitive atmosphere
― i have a massive soft spot for mirra. i think everyone who knows her does. i would love to see the whole team just absolutely adoring her
― iga and aryna becoming friends??? maybe??? i like my rivalries sweet off court and fiery on court so it'll be nice seeing them interact
― can't forget the best friendship in tennis aka sabadosa!!! lowkey i don't ship them because they just remind me of me with my best friends but i think a really close platonic relationship like that is SO important and valuable and i'm really glad they have each other like that.
team world
team roster: ― coco gauff ― elena rybakina ― ons jabeur ― zheng qinwen ― emma navarro ― leylah fernandez
team world notes:
― emma and coco feel like they would be a great pair. they're both close with ben it seems so i feel like they would be friends. also they're professional american tennis players. to use some terminology from @fritzes, american idiot solidarity
― the difference in vibe between coco and elena will be absolutely hilarious. i think they'd get along don't get me wrong it's just funny they seem so opposite to me. would love to see them play some doubles together that would be so fun...
― honestly i feel like all doubles permutations in this team would be so funny. if any of these people actually played doubles together (besides coco/emma/leylah with each other) i would be like "what the fuck is she playing doubles with her????" and i think that's beautiful.
― not to make too many comparisons with the laver cup but team world here isn't just america ft. canada. that shouldn't be a super tall order because this is team WORLD but we've all seen the trends for teams in the mens version.
― everyone loves ons yall. including team europe. we all just love ons so much.
― i'm ngl i don't have too many ultra specific notes for this team i just think it'll be good vibes and good tennis. it'll also be very appealing for me personally because i love all of these players and i know most of tennisblr loves them too :)

and so it begins... the wimbledon draw. here are my thoughts
wta:
iga's draw is a nightmare (and somewhat reminiscent of ao). she has kenin in the first round, who upset coco in the first round last year. in the third round she could play siniakova, who has been really good on grass this season. and of course the big one is the possibility of ostapenko in the fourth round, who she has never beaten. however, there is some hope for iga because ostapenko plays ajla tomljanovic in the first round, and the last time they played at wimbledon it was a drama-fueled match that ajla won. if she's in good form, she could definitely trouble ostapenko. on the other side of this quarter is defending champion marketa, and as much as I'd love to say I have faith in her going deep, I don't. she had a good run at rg, but she's just so inconsistent that I don't know if I can see her keeping that form. also, she's never dealt with the pressure of a slam title defense before. krejcikova and especially collins could trouble her and steal her quarterfinal spot, and either of those two could beat iga if she makes it there
the second quarter is kind of ridiculous. the top seed here is elena rybakina, who will probably either win the tournament or withdraw due to illness. there's really no one on her side of the quarter that I can see beating her, but she's just impossible to predict when it comes to her physical health. if she's healthy, I have full faith in her making the quarterfinals. the other side of the quarter is where things get complicated: we have one of each of last year's quarterfinalist, semifinalist, and finalist in jess, elina, and of course ons. there is also katie boulter, who has proven herself on grass recently. if ons is in her usual wimbledon form, the others don't stand a chance, but we really just don't know how ons is right now. I'm not sure if being back at wimbledon will affect her mentality positively or negatively. jess is coming off the berlin title and could definitely see a quarterfinal here, but if she did I think her curse would continue against elena
if the projected semifinal does happen, I would be truly shocked if iga won. elena is normally a tough matchup for her, and on grass it would only be worse
in the third quarter, we have aryna who had to withdraw from her last match because of a shoulder injury. I don't know how serious it is, but she has been practicing at wimbledon so hopefully it doesn't affect her too much. in the fourth round, she will probably play dasha, who won't trouble her on grass or mirra, who aryna can probably beat as long as she's healthy. in the rg quarterfinal, she was really sick and probably didn't play as well as she could have. there's also karolina muchova lurking in this section of the draw, and she may be rusty and with a questionable wrist, but on any given day she can play like the best in the world. she's good on every surface, and if she's on top of her game then everyone else better watch out. on the other side of this quarter is maria and qinwen. since qinwen is pretty bad on grass, this should be a good draw for maria but... it's maria. emma raducanu could actually make a really good run here, but I don't think anyone from the other half of the quarter could beat aryna in the quarterfinals if it came down to it
and finally, coco gauff is far far away from iga in the draw. after losing in the first round last year, she's ready to make a deep run. azarenka in the fourth round could be tough, but as long as coco can keep her serving consistent, she can absolutely make at least qfs and maybe even more. jasmine, kostyuk, naomi, and madi keys are all contenders to face her in the quarterfinal and I really can't pick a favorite between them. I think any of them against coco could be a toss-up, roller coaster match
for this projected semifinal, I really can't predict it. the aryna/coco h2h is super competitive and neither one of them is the clear favorite against each other. this has match of the tournament potential
interesting round 1 matches: swiatek/kenin, tomljanovic/ ostapenko, alexandrova/raducanu, badosa/muchova, andreescu/cristian, azarenka/stephens
atp:
well, jannik sinner's first slam as the 1 seed gave him quite the draw. the possibility of grass specialist and compatriot matteo in the second round is just ridiculous. and poor tallon griekspoor in the third in honestly just cruel at this point. ben shelton is projected to play jannik in the fourth round, but that's not happening. will denis shapovalov sweep and take that fourth round spot? honestly, considering his history at this tournament, it's totally possible. on the other side of the quarter is daniil and grigor, both of whom would probably rather not see jannik again. if jannik gets through that minefield of a draw to the quarterfinals, I don't think daniil or grigor can beat him, and between those two I'm not sure which one would actually get to the quarterfinals. zhang, who just beat daniil, is his projected third round opponent and could make things really tough for him
and on the same side of the draw (sigh) is defending champion carlos. he honestly couldn't have asked for a better draw. casper ruud is the projected quarterfinalist you want to see when you're a top seed, and in his section, tiafoe, baez, and humbert can't really challenge him. I think the likely scenario is that carlos plays tommy paul in the quarterfinal (or maybe bublik if he decides to take tennis seriously for the week). that has the potential to be a really good match since both of them have proven their grass competence. still, I would favor carlos
and the projected semifinal. SIGH. their previous slam matches really tell you everything you need to know: carlos starts slow but will outlast jannik in five sets. if someone wins it in three or four, it's probably jannik but if someone wins it in five, it's probably carlos. that being said, I really can't predict this. I wish it was possible for it to be the final
and now for the ugh quarter of the draw. the top seed is zverev, the next two seeds are rublev and tsitsipas, and somehow korda, the "wimbledon favorite", is here too. honestly though, I truly think zverev could lose to jack draper in the third round. jack has proven himself in the past few weeks on grass, which zverev has never done. taylor fritz could also make a dent here, being a really good grass player. the rublev/tsitsipas/musetti/korda section of this quarter is gonna be chaos. the whole thing is gonna be chaos. I could not tell you who I think is gonna come out of this quarter
and finally, novak djokovic. we just don't really know where his level is at right now, and we haven't known all season. funnily enough, he could play luca nardi in the third round. the big looming specter for him is hubi of course, but even before that, there's holger. it's truly impossible to predict holger, but he did make the quarterfinals here last year and was a tiebreak away from making the quarterfinals at rg. if he does play novak in the fourth round, I really think he has a chance of winning. on the other side of the quarter, I would be shocked if hubi didn't make the quarterfinals. there's really no one who can keep up with his serve, and honestly I think he has a chance at semis here
like with rg, this projected semifinal is not happening
interesting round 1 matches: berrettini/fuscovics, jarry/shapovalov, monfils/mannarino, arnaldi/tiafoe, mensik/bublik, fils/stricker, etcheverry/nardi

A bit of a documentary on Vimeo
In 2013, Salon Bruit e.V. and Audition Records organised a series of concerts by female artists from the experimental scene in the cinema of an ex-squat in Berlin. Each concert was filmed and released online (auditionrecords.com/quota.php), accompanied by an interview with the artist, as a means of offering a partial, but necessary, insight into an extremely dynamic scene for which documentation is lamentably sparse.
It is from this heterogeneous material that the film blends the narratives of this group of women and charts their musical journey through their individual experiences and challenges, which led them to Berlin to embrace a scene which offers them little chance of financial reward or mainstream success.
Echoing the way its protagonists conceive their music, this experimental documentary, through radical aesthetic choices, also gives insight into their unique approach to creating and performing in a genre that eludes the dominant musical rules and structures.

Cannabis Plant Growing Mediums: Soil, Coco Coir, Hydroponics, and Aeroponics
Tumblr media
1. Anbau in Erde
2. Anbau in Kokosfasern
2.1 Was sind Kokosfasern?
3. Hydroponischer Anbau
3.1 Was ist Hydroponik?
4. Aeroponischer Anbau
4.1 Was ist Aeroponik?
Maximale Sauerstoffversorgung: Wurzeln erhalten viel Sauerstoff, was das Wachstum fördert.
Wassereffizienz: Sehr effizienter Wasserverbrauch.

A Market Stall in Batavia, Andries Beeckman (attributed to), Albert Eckhout (rejected attribution), c. 1640 - c. 1666
The Dutch and Malay inscriptions on the piece of paper in the lower right corner identify this as a Dutch painting of subjects studied on the spot. Most of the fruit varieties are found only in Indonesia, the former Dutch East Indies, and were not exported to Europe at the time. The combination of figures from different countries suggests that the setting is most probably the very cosmopolitan Batavia, modern-day Jakarta.8 A Chinese merchant, recognizable as such from his distinctive goatee, moustache and remarkably long fingernails, is counting coins in a fruit stall set off with bamboo partitions. Standing on the left is a woman wearing a typically Javanese sarong and kebaya and holding a small cigar in one hand while placing a durian upright with the other. A second Javanese woman in the middle is lifting a small bundle of leaf wrappers out of a small Japanese lacquered casket, probably betel leaves. A boy behind her is picking a banana from the bunch hanging on the right. A striking salmon-crested cockatoo (Cacatua moluccensis) is perched on the bamboo screen at the back.
Andries Beeckman went to great lengths to depict the huge diversity of tropical fruit as faithfully as possible, but he was clearly not a professional still-life painter. The different varieties are easily distinguished, but their textures are not convincing. Laid out on the table – some with numbers matching the list on the piece of paper (the latter are given between brackets below) – are, on the far left, from top to bottom, rambutans (Nephelium lappaceum, no. 1), langsats (Lansium domesticum, no. 3) and starfruit (Averrhoa carambola, no. 2). Beside them are a partly cut pomelo (Citrus maxima, no. 4) and durians, one of them sliced (Durio, no. 5). The three small pieces of red fruit at bottom left are water or Malay apples (Syzygium aqueum or Syzygium malaccense, no. 6) or Java apples (Syzygium samarangense), and lying to their right are mangoes (Mangifera indica, no. 7) and pineapples (Ananas comosus, no. 8). Below the two pineapples in the centre are jackfruit, one halved (Artocarpus Heteropyllus, no. 9) and several small mangosteens, some opened (Garcinia mangostana, no. 10). On the right are bananas (no. 11), five coconuts and a halved one (Cocos nucifera), and at the very front cashew apples (Anacardium occidentale). The fruit cut in two in the Japanese casket is probably a sort of lime called a Calamondin orange (Citrofortunella microcarpa).
The Rijksmuseum painting is a reduced version of a canvas from an anonymous series of scenes of foreign peoples and produce that decorated the walls of Schloss Pretzsch an der Elbe in Saxony until 1828 (fig. a).9 In the nineteenth century they were removed, first to Berlin and then to Schloss Schwedt an der Oder in Brandenburg.10 They were seen there in the 1930s by Thomsen, who rather hesitantly attributed them to Albert Eckhout and dated them around the middle of the seventeenth century.11 Schwedt was completely destroyed in the closing days of the Second World War, and all that is left of the works of art are pre-war black-and-white photographs making it clear that the attribution to Eckhout is untenable.12
The connection with the canvas from Schloss Pretzsch also led to this Market Stall in Batavia being wrongly attributed to Eckhout or his circle in the past.13 It is woodenly executed, compositionally clumsy, and is not of the kind of Brazilian subject for which Eckhout is known. Minor differences between the two paintings show that they were not copied after each other but seem to share the same or a similar source. The way in which the fruit and cockatoo are depicted displays a clear resemblance to the only known still life by Andries Beeckman (fig. b), and, interestingly, one of the scenes from the series in Pretzsch castle was definitely based on watercolours by him,14 so the present canvas could also be by Beeckman or someone from his circle.
Very little is known about the picture’s provenance, although there are a few early records of an Indonesian fruit market, and since A Market Stall in Batavia is the only surviving work of that nature there is a great temptation to associate it with those early sources. There is, however, nothing that can be said for certain. Around 1660 Jan Vos wrote an ode about paintings in the collection of Joan Huydecooper, among them an ‘East Indies fruit market’: ‘Who has driven me from the north to the east? / I find myself in the market of the East Indies coast. / Here nature displays her fruit as food for life. / The sight makes my mouth desire the beautiful harvest, / Thus is my stomach now sorely overburdened. / Greedy eyes are not soon satiated’.15 It may well be that the poet was referring to the Rijksmuseum canvas.16 There is a second mention of an ‘East Indies fruit market’ a little later in the collection of burgomaster Mattheus van den Broucke of Dordrecht.17 It is far from obvious that it refers to this Market Stall in Batavia. His picture was one of a series of which the others were described as ‘One ditto, with East Indies animals and fruit’, ‘One ditto, being East Indies lodgings, ‘One ditto’, ‘Three ditto, East Indies women’ and ‘A Moorish woman’.18 It is very possible that the Rijksmuseum painting was also part of a larger ensemble of that kind.

Soult and the one painting he did not get
I'm still trying to figure out what paintings Soult acquired during his career, and especially, in what ways. Browsing Google Books I often end up finding references in art dictionaries. In this case, it's about a painter Georg Friedrich Weitsch who almost would have done a picture I really would have loved to see:
From: Schadow, Kunstwerke und Kunst-Ansichten, Berlin 1849
At Weitsch's, the court painter, Denon had seen the portrait of Weitsch's father, called it a masterpiece, and so it happened that our painter was commissioned to paint a portrait of Marshal Soult; then he was to deliver a large painting in which the Marshal is surrounded by his aides-de-camp, the hunters and hounds, on a hunting party. Weitsch therefore had to go to Stettin, where the marshal had the governorate; there he made excellent sketches of the hounds. When the marshal saw the sketch of the whole thing, he had second thoughts and said how this idea, carried out on a large scale, would give him the air of a ruling magnate and therefore the execution could not take place
What? Soult all shy and self-conscious? For once, and about this? When I so wanted to see this painting of Papa Soult and his bunch of weirdos ADCs getting lost in the woods? I can just picture it, Saint-Chamans "borrowing" decorations of all kind for his portrait, Petiet being dragged into the picture kicking and screaming, after his first hunting trip with the marshal had thoroughly put him off hunting forever, Lenoble, Pierre Soult and Brun de Villeret trying to keep drunk Coco Lefebvre upright, with Alfred de Lameth gleefully commenting everything and the dogs yapping and howling ... I'm sure it would have been a masterpiece!
But seriously, that's one painting I would have loved to see. A kind of gigantic military family photo. Soult really could have had his doubts at a better occasion... And according to other art dictionaries, that's indeed not the whole story.
From: Nagler, Neues allgemeines Künstler-Lexicon, Vol. 21, München 1851
In 1808 he was called to Stettin to paint the portrait of Marshal Soult for the Hall of Marshals in Paris. Soult appears life-size and in striking likeness. The marshal wanted to be depicted on a par force hunt and demanded a sketch for a 16-foot-wide painting; but Napoleon, as chief par force hunter, believed that he could not tolerate anyone else, and the painting was not executed.
Oh, so Napoleon didn't like the idea of Soult having pretensions at being a huntsmann. Well that makes more sense. Though of course, there's even more information in yet another volume...
From: Fuessli, Allgemeines Künstlerlexikon, Zürich, 1820
In 1808 he [Weitsch] was called to Stettin to paint Marshal Soult for the Hall of Marshals in Paris; the picture that used to hang there resembled him so little that Napoleon had it taken down. He finished the work to the highest satisfaction, and then also painted the generals Compans, Condras and Ferion, as well as several colonels. He was also to paint the Marshal in a large par force chase (wide 16 feet, high 12 feet). The sketch was made and the portraits of men, horses and dogs were drafted separately. But there was talk in Paris of the Marshal wanting to be painted in a par force hunt, for after all he was not a sovereign prince. Napoleon was supposed to have said that he himself intended to be depicted in the same fashion once, and so it happened that the matter was pursued somewhat lukewarmly and later, when Soult went to Spain, was completely postponed and cancelled.
Hm, there was talk in Paris while Soult was in Stettin, yes? Now I wonder who might have talked? Like, what other marshal who indeed happened to be a prince and also had a certain interest in hunting and was chronically at odds with Soult might have pointed out to Napoleon that this manner of being painted was in no way fitting for a mere marshal? Hm? No, biting your nails will not help, you're found out, Monsieur 😁.

the many woes of WTA Berlin 2024
yep, we’ve got yet another cursed tournament
To start us off, the World #1 Iga Świątek has withdrawn entirely, leaving Coco Gauff, who just became #2 a week ago, as the top seed. As a result, Aryna Sabalenka (seeded second) and Elena Rybakina (seeded third) known for their explosive matches, ended up on the same side of the draw. Jessica Pegula, coming back from injury, is seeded fourth.
Right from the start, it doesn’t just rain. It pours, and this tournament doesn’t have a roof. Matches get delayed and rescheduled like crazy throughout the entire tournament - we’ll get to the worst of it as they come.
In the first round, qualifier and known doubles player Katerina Siniakova takes out Navarro 6-4 6-3. Victoria Azarenka beats the ever-erratic seventh seed Maria Sakkari 6-4 6-2 in a remarkably uncompetitive match. Another qualifier, Veronika Kudermetova, beats compatriot Samsonova 3-6 6-4 6-4. Kudermetova is one of those players that randomly shows up every few months and decides she’s gonna play at a top 20 level. Speaking of players who can sometimes play like the best in the world and sometimes forget how to play tennis, Kostyuk loses to one of the worst grass players on tour, Daria Kasatkina, with a scoreline 4-6 7-6 6-3.
All the top four seeds survive the second round, but fifth and sixth aren’t so lucky. Anna Kalinskaya receives her first walkover of the tournament after fifth seed Marketa Vondrousova is injured at 5-5 in the first set. Siniakova continues her run by beating sixth seed Zheng 6-4 6-4. Throughout all this it rains, a lot.
The quarterfinals is where things start to get truly crazy. First Rybakina is forced to retire against Azarenka at only 3-1. Following this, Azarenka and her son play mixed doubles with some fans on the court. Jess and Siniakova are in a tight third set when the rain pushes them to the next day along with the other two quarterfinals. Jess is able to finish it up, winning 7-6 3-6 6-3. In the next quarterfinal, Coco wins a close tiebreak against eight seed Ons Jabeur, but Jabeur retires immediately after due to illness. Finally, Anna receives another walkover, this time from Sabalenka, who retired due to a shoulder injury at 5-1. Three out of four quarterfinals ended in a retirement.
The very same day, Anna beats Azarenka with a bizarre scoreline of 6-1 6-7 6-1 to make the final. Interestingly enough, her boyfriend makes a German 500 final at roughly the same time. The second semifinal is a battle of doubles partners between Coco and Jess. Jess wins the first set, but Coco is serving at 5-3 in the second. In true Coco Gauff fashion, she gets broken and the second set goes to a tiebreak. Jess is up 3-1 in the tiebreak when it starts to rain, meaning the end of the match has to be pushed to the next day, where the winner will face Anna just a few hours later.
The next day, Jess finishes off the tiebreak, winning it 7-2, and then goes to play the final. The first set goes to a tiebreak, which Anna wins in a shocking 7-0. Jess breaks in the second set to win it 6-4. In the third set, Anna is up 4-1 with momentum towards a win, but gets broken. Even still, at 5-4 she has four match points, all of which Jess manages to save. Then, at 5-5 Anna goes down 0-40 and ends up saving four break points to hold. She finds herself with another match point in the next game, but Jess saves it in an insane rally to send it to a tiebreak. Unlike the first set tiebreak, Jess wins this one handily with a scoreline of 7-3.
When they meet at the net, Jess literally says sorry.
