Osage orange by Dean Sauvola Via Flickr: A pair of SD70ACes make for a respectable fake on the rear of a coal empty. The true head end can be seen in the distance towards the top of the hill. East of Osage, WY on the BNSF Black Hills Sub. September 9, 2023.

Water cycle por Chris Crook Por Flickr: February 22, 2010, and the water cycle is in full effect. Rain and warmer temps are causing the snow to revert to a semi-gaseous form, causing a haze of fog as a loaded Ohio Central coal train rolls north a few miles north of Zanesville, Ohio. Back in the day, I would have called this a GLT, Glouster Turn, because it has the nice neat loaf of coal in the gons behind the power, but I think the folks at G&W had changed the symbol to BOT by then. I never bothered to listen to the scanner back then, so I don't know. If saw a train from the office window, I knew it was train time. And if the power/weather/light was good, it was lunchtime too.

Photo: RWE 564 reversing w tree branches
Sometimes a descriptive file name isn’t very helpful. I made this photo on a visit to the coal fields west of Köln, Germany on September 2, 2013. The metadata reads: Canon EOS7D, EF28-135mm, 75mm, f7.1 1/500 ISO 200. The branches make the picture. Tracking the Light normally posts every day!

The reason hobgoblins came to Gideon's village in the first place was actually because of a rumor about an object containing an efreeti. Using them to fuel the train would not only save money, but the hobgoblins would then have access to a magical being who could grant them any wish. So they set course.
They didn't know the efreeti had been freed years ago, and had subsequently been forced to flee already. All they found was her son. Good enough.

Wouldn't it be funny if it was revealed that Gideon likes kids and childlike stuff because he had part of his childhood taken away from him? And he wants the best for them because he never got to experience it for himself?
Funny, right?

Now that I really think about it, I wonder how much of my adoration of the “big scary guy finds and adopts small child” trope is trauma, and how much of it is unga bunga monkey brain going “oh, he treats these children wonderfully. He’d make a wonderful father”
Hm.

This is a great (and hilarious) question. I want to say no, but I think there may be something to it. The difference would be in quality, rather than taste, as logically, locomotives ‘eat’ their coal….well….sort of…..backwards. It enters from the back end, and is spent thru the front.
Quality has been eluded to in several episodes - whenever Henry needs his special stash, and one episode where Gordon gets the special coal by mistake. They apparently run fine on regular coal, but when the quality is poorer, some engines struggle. However, higher quality is best. So, yeah. They don’t really mention it often, n maybe it matters less to them on the daily, but I think it’s probable that they do.
