Copa America: Brazil booed off pitch after 0-0 draw with Venezuela

Brazil produced a first-half performance which saw just one shot on target despite enjoying 75% possession
BBC coverage
How to follow:
Listen on BBC Radio 5 live and BBC local radio; text commentary on the BBC Sport website
Hosts Brazil had three goals ruled out and were booed off the pitch as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Venezuela in the Copa America on Tuesday.
Philippe Coutinho’s late strike looked to have sent Brazil through to the last eight but the video assistant referee, having already denied a Gabriel Jesus effort, showed a foul in the build-up.
Referee Julio Bascunan also ruled out a first-half Roberto Firmino strike.
Brazil remain top of Group A with four points from two games.
“VAR was correct. I have absolutely nothing to demand. We got justice,” Brazil coach Tite said. “They made the right call with both [VAR] goals.”
Brazil made hard work of beating Bolivia in their opener and once again struggled for a creative spark against Venezuela, promoting jeers from the home crowd in Salvador at both half-time and full-time.
“We have to understand the supporters, they want to see goals and if I had been in the crowd I also would have wanted to boo us,” Tite added.
The hosts enjoyed 75% possession in the first half but managed just one shot on target, much to the delight of Venezuela coach Rafael Dudamel.
“We played an almost perfect game against a team of brilliant individuals,” he said, adding: “Long live VAR.
“Today is very important, but this result will mean nothing if we don’t qualify from the group.”
Venezuela have two points from two games and have realistic hopes of advancing to the knockout stage with their final game coming against Bolivia, who suffered their second straight defeat on Tuesday, losing 3-1 to Peru.

Messi was back on Friday for the first time since the 2018 World Cup but couldn't stop his team losing 3-1 to Venezuela in a friendly.
Salomon Rondon, John Murillo and Josef Martinez scored for Venezuela at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, while Lautaro Martinez replied for Argentina.
Messi hadn't played an international since the 4-3 loss to France in the round of 16 at the World Cup in Russia.
"He played a good game" Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni said. "The chances we created were thanks to him."
Messi showed his usual deft skills and his long-range shot in the 38th minute was headed for the top corner until Venezuela goalkeeper Wuilker Farinez Aray tipped the ball over the crossbar.
Messi helped set up Argentina's 58th-minute goal with a pass to Giovani Lo Celso, who eventually fed Martinez inside the area.
Venezuela had opened the scoring in the fifth minute when Rondon ran on to a long pass into the penalty area and sent a right-footed shot beyond goalkeeper Franco Armani.
Murillo made it 2-0 just before halftime by curling the ball away from Armani just inside the far post.
Venezuela's fast counterattacks were a nightmare for Argentina throughout and Martinez sealed victory by converting a 75th-minute penalty.
"It's satisfying to earn a victory against a team like Argentina," Venezuela coach Rafael Dudamel said.
Dudamel surprisingly offered his resignation after the match. He told a news conference he was not happy about the political use of a visit by a government official before Friday's game in Madrid, and said his future would be decided in talks with federation officials in the coming days.
The last time Argentina played at the Metropolitano it lost 6-1 to Spain in a World Cup warmup in 2018.
Argentina will play another friendly on Tuesday against Morocco in Tangier. Scaloni said he hadn't decided whether Messi would play in that game.
Argentina has not won a trophy since the 1993 Copa America. It lost the last two finals of the tournament to Chile, in 2015 and 2016. It also lost the 2014 World Cup final to Germany.
The Copa America will be held in Brazil in June.
Venezuela on Monday plays a Catalunya team that is expected to include former Spain players Gerard Pique and Xavi Hernandez.

Sampaoli's predecessor was fired for “incompe …
He president of Atlético MineiroSergio Sette Câmara said on Monday that the Venezuelan coach Rafael Dudamel was fired after ten club games, where Argentina's Jorge Sampaoli now heads, for “technical incompetence” and because his disciplinary methods seemed more typical of the “Army”.
The leader responded harshly to the criticism of the former Vinotinto selector, who accused him of not being a professional when his dismissal as coach of the first team was announced last February. “The truth is this: Dudamel was fired for technical incompetence”, affirmed the highest authority of the whole of Belo Horizonte in an interview with radio Itatiaia.
“I never exchanged a word with the president (Sette Câmara) since I left Atlético. Mr. Sergio never had the strength, personality and character to stand up and be able to speak as a professional and as a man about the reason for my departure“, had been the words of Dudamel in declarations to the portal 'GloboEsporte'.
In his revealing media appearance, the president of Mineiro explained that did not meet with Dudamel because he considered it a waste of time talk to someone who was no longer a member of the club. In the interview, he referred to the coach's rigid methods, which is why “he failed to hug the cast,” according to him.
“I felt like I wanted to adopt too rigid rules, creating rules where there was no need”, he said, to quote after he gave the players an hour to “wake up” and “have coffee.” “It looked like an army thing and that's not it. The player is already a professional. He had to leave the team prepared, implement a game plan and that did not happen, “said Sette Câmara.
The Venezuelan technical director He was fired from the Brazilian club at the end of last February, after just ten games and despite having a signed contract until 2021. Under his direction, the Albinegro team was eliminated at the first exchange of the Copa Sudamericana and the Copa de Brasil, which forced their early dismissal. His substitute since March was the Argentine Sampaoli, who led Santos last season, with which he finished runner-up in the Brazilian Championship.

A Tale Of Two Forwards | Tim Vickery
Vickery discusses a tale of two forwards, Rhian Brewster and Lincoln, in this piece.
Tim Vickery’s Notes From South America: A Tale Of Two Forwards
England and Brazil squared off in Kolkata on October 25th 2017 in the semi final of the World Under-17 Cup, for a match that turned into a tale of two centre forwards.
Brazil’s Lincoln had terrified defences in the earlier rounds, but against stronger opposition he was unable to make much of an impact. Bulky and one footed, he looked like a blunt instrument – especially in comparison to England’s striking rapier Rhian Brewster, who helped himself to all three goals as England won 3-1.
A little over two years later they could have met again, this time in Doha. Their clubs, Flamengo and Liverpool, faced each other in the final of the Club World cup.
Brewster’s team won. But this time Lincoln held the advantage. At least he got on the pitch. He was an extra time substitute, sent on in the quest to equalise Roberto Firmino’s goal. And it so nearly came right. Flamengo’s clearest chance of the game came right at the end, and it fell to Lincoln. He was well placed to meet a cross from the right. But he skied over the bar.  At least he was there to miss it – as Rhian Brewster may well have been pondering. He had not even been included in Liverpool’s squad.
Over the past couple of years Lincoln has been picking up valuable experience with Brazil’s most popular club, the reigning domestic and continental champions. True, he is most often used as a substitute. Even so, he is coming off the bench in big games in front of huge crowds, and has helped himself to some important goals.
Brewster, meanwhile, has made very little impression on the Liverpool first team. Injuries have not helped. But so far he has been restricted to the Carabao Cup and a few minutes off the bench in the FA Cup. A loan move has just been fixed up for him – he joins Swansea City, where he will team up once more with Steve Cooper, the coach from the 2017 Under !7 World Cup win.
But this does not necessarily mean that Rhian Brewster is making so progress, or that Lincoln has overtaken him and is now the better player. The difference in the dynamic of their careers reflects their contrasting circumstances. One is on the periphery of the global game.  The other is at the centre, where the competition for places in much more fierce.
After Liverpool had beaten his team in that Club World Cup final, Flamengo’s Portuguese coach Jorge Jesus hit the nail on the head. His team was made up of the best players available in Brazilian football. His opponents could pick from the best in the world. To get a game in the Liverpool first team, Rhian Brewster has been up against top players from Egypt, Brazil and Senegal (the much vaunted Salah-Firmino-Mane front line) plus Belgian international Divock Origi.
Three teams go into 2020 contending for the…
Thanks to several big issues, Rafael Dudamel has…
Lionel Messi was once again top dog in…
Lincoln does not face that level of internal rivalry. The reality of South American football, even at the biggest clubs, is that the constant selling of talented youngsters opens up space for the next generation and accelerates their progress.
There is an excellent example at Penarol of Uruguay, the first winners of South America’s Copa Libertadores. Last year saw the explosion on 19 year old winger Brian Rodriguez. Going into 2019 he had played just a handful of games.  So well did he do when given his chance that he established himself in the first team, got himself in the Uruguay side – and earned a move to Los Angeles in the United States.
This sale opened up space for Facundo Pellistri, just turned 18, who ended the year as the new sensation of Uruguayan football. Fluid in his movements, with two fine feet and extraordinary vision for one so young, Pellistri looks like a real find. But had Rodriguez not been sold, he would still be an unknown. There is a plus side, then, to starting out on the periphery of the global game’s western European dominance.
Don’t forget to follow World Soccer on Facebook and Twitter.
