Today is paint day in band camp and I'm gonna do some Marble Hornets-centric paint, might share it to some friends once I finish it
Anyway, thanks for reading! Remember to self care and hydrate and I hope you have a good day :3

Sopa de mora salvadoreña (Salvadoran black nightshade soup)
American black nightshade (Solanum americanum)—not to be confused with bittersweet nightshade (Solanum dulcamara) or deadly nightshade (Atropa belladonna)—is a widespread flowering plant in the genus Solanum which grows throughout central America and Mexico, and into the northeastern United States. The genus Solanum, within the nightshade family Solanaceae, also includes tomatoes, potatoes, and eggplants.
The ripe berries of this plant, perhaps unsurprisingly, taste something like a very small tomato—but this dish concerns the plant's leaves. Sopa de mora is an earthy, savory, slightly spicy soup eaten in the countryside of El Salvador. It is made from the leaves of hierba mora, or black nightshade, in addition to squash, potato, chili, and sometimes chicken; a beaten egg or two may also be added and cooked, without stirring, directly in the soup.
A similar soup, made from black nightshade and broken pasta, is eaten in Guatemala under the name "caldo de quilete," "sopa de quilete," or "sopa de macuy." "Macuy" presumably derives from the word "majk'u'y", from Kaqchikel: a language in the Maya family spoken in central Guatemala.

Note that, despite the fact that black nightshade leaves are eaten all throughout the plant's native range, they contain varying amounts of toxic compounds including Solanine, and should be eaten in moderation. Avoid unripe (green) berries, and do not eat leaves raw. Some people advise pre-boiling the leaves and discarding the boiling water to remove toxins.
Ingredients:
Large bunch of American black nightshade (Solanum americanum), Eastern black nightshade (Solanum ptychanthum), or European black nightshade (Solanum nigrum) leaves, washed and chopped
1/2 white onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, chopped
1 tomato, diced
1 jalapeño, sliced
1 small russet potato, diced
1 chayote fruit (güisquil), diced (optional)
1 small carrot, sliced (optional)
Water or vegetable stock
I used water, and found that the vegetables and leaves gave the soup plenty of flavor; but it's not unusual to use vegetable or chicken stock.
Instructions:
Sauté onion and garlic on medium in a large stockpot until onions are softened and translucent.
Add garlic and sauté until light golden brown.
Add tomato and salt and sauté until softened and nearly dry.
Add remaining ingredients, plus water to cover. Boil until vegetables and leaves are softened, 15-20 minutes. Taste and adjust salt.
Identifying American black nightshade
These are quick notes rather than a complete guide. Don't forage unless you know what you're doing!
Leaves are alternate; ovate or lanceolate; with entire to undulate to blunty dentate margins. Flowers are about 1cm in diameter; white to light purple; with yellow stamens. Berries are green when unripe, and glossy and black when ripe. They grow in clusters. Calyxes are smaller than the berries, and curl away from them. Ripe berries, unripe berries, and flowers often appear on the same branch.
Avoid the green, unripe berries, which are toxic.
Lookalikes
Bittersweet nightshade (Solanum dulcamara) is poisonous. It has berries that are green when unripe, and bright red when ripe. Black nightshade has berries that are green when unripe, and black when ripe.
Deadly nightshade (Atropa belladonna) is poisonous. It has a calyx extending far beyond the berry, and the berries grow singly. Black nightshade has a calyx smaller than the berry, and its berries grow in clusters.
Eastern black nightshade (Solanum ptychanthum) is also in the Solanum nigrum complex and is sometimes considered synonymous with American black nightshade. It is edible, and may also be used in this recipe. Leaves are alternate; ovate or lanceolate. Leaf margins have 2-5 blunt teeth at the base, but become smooth and pointed at the tip. The base is rounded or cuneate (wedge-shaped). Petioles are winged with extensions of the leaf blade.
Flowers are about 1cm in diameter; white to light purple; with yellow stamens. Berries are green when unripe, and glossy and black when ripe; and grow in clusters.

I love your nanobomb hcs so much they need more recognition!!!!😤😤 Do you happen to have anymore? Maybe a bit of angst?
I WAS SO SCARED PEOPLE WOULDN'T LIKE MY HEADCANONS IF I ADDED THE ANGSTY ONES OMG THANK YOU
✨Angsty nanobomb✨
This one is a fanfic though, Idk what name to give
This fanfic takes place soon after Clove's arrival to the VP
My native language is not English so I used Google translator for lots of words, therefore, they might be incredibly misused (also, I can't put sentences on their proper order)
I will also post this on AO3, profile is yukasyukas, I'm still thinking about the title
Tayane had just came back from a mission in Icebox. The Brazilian had always had a hard time in missions there, mostly because of the weather, going from tropical country weather to cold, snowy was NOT easy, she had almost died while trying to get the omega Deadlock, who, according to her, had the weather advantage. Now she just wanted to take a warm bath and cuddle with her lovely girlfriend under the blankets, possibly while watching a movie and eating some snacks.
The girlfriend, though, had other plans.
When the duelist looked for Killjoy at the sentinels section, Chamber informed her that she was at the lab fixing something on her lockdown. She, then, proceeded to look in the engineering lab, where she found the German.
“Not now, Raze, maybe later?”
“There's nothing wrong with the lockdown, it was working perfectly the last time you used it”
“I know, but it can be better” the girl didn't look at the other's face while saying so
“Can't you do this tomorrow? I really missed you during the mission, poxa” (Brazilian slang for disappointment, discontent)
“Not now, Raze, I’ll go see you when I finish this, I promise”
“There’s nothing to finish if it's working fine!”
“Can you two please stop shouting? I'm working with a very delicate gadget right now” Raze hadn't noticed Deadlock until the woman talked. She seemed stressed
“Sorry, Iselin. Raze, can you please wait? I’ll talk to you, I promise” asked Killjoy finally looking at Raze
“Hm, sure” mumbled
“Thank you”
And with that, not really wanting to get the alpha Deadlock angry as well as the omega, Raze left and went to the duelist section. Maybe they’d want to watch a movie? Sunwoo would probably be down for it.
On the next day Tayane looked for Klara at the canteen. Nothing. ‘Maybe she's still sleeping?’ she thought to herself.
“Bom dia, Tayane” (good morning, Tayane) greeted a deep voice with a Norse accent from the nearest table
“Erik, hi” responded her as she sat down beside him “Kirra”
“Did something happen? You seem worried, mate” asked the second.
“Have you seen Klara? She doesn't want to talk to me since… well, since I left for mission three days ago”
“No, not at all, and I’ve been awake since 4 am, have you checked the sentinels section?”
“Not yet, I was expecting to see her here”
“Honestly, it seems like she's avoiding you. Hella toxic”
“I’m not breaking up just because she's stressed, Breach”
“I was just making an observation”
“Did anything happen that may have got her angry?” Asked Skye
After thinking for a while, Raze responded “We argued before I left… You know, all that Kingdom stuff. A friend of mine in Brazil said they've been trying to get access to Salvador again since I left and I was asking if KJ could do something about that… Do you think I went too far?”
“Honestly, kingdom has to go to hell, as well as all their workers”
“Breach, shut up” retorted both the women
“But he isn't completely wrong though, Kingdom has done damage in so many areas” continued Kirra
“I know, but talking about it with Klara, who's in such a high position there… She might've felt attacked? I mean, I was kinda attacking her. But I wasn't wrong.”
“I don't know, maybe you should ask someone closer to her, Cypher or Neon maybe?”
“Yeah, sure, thanks” thanked her as she got up
After talking to Neon, Cypher and Chamber, they confirmed Tayane's thoughts. Klara was angry and offended by what the other said.
“Do you want me to talk to her?” Offered Tala
“No, I'm good. I'm gonna talk to her later… as soon as I figure out where she is”
“Maybe on the lab?”
“Nope. Already checked there when I talked to Cypher”
“Well, then I don't know… the sentinels’ section maybe?”
“Still looking for KJ?” Asked Jett, who was on the couch right next to them
“She said she'd talk to me today, is she too mad?”
“Look…” a pause “I don't know”
“Wow, Sunwoo, very helpful” picked Neon
“At least I'm trying to help!”
“I'm gonna try the sentinels' section” sighted Raze “Hopefully she won't be able to dodge me if there's more people there”
The sentinels' section was on the other side of the floor, which meant Raze would have to walk all the way across the living room, where Killjoy and KAY/O were talking about some projects.
“It would indeed be ‘cool’, but it doesn't make my style, Killjoy, I'm sorry”
“Oh, c’mon, some fire could make you so much stronger! You could easily beat the shit out of Phoenix”
They didn't seem to have noticed the duelist arriving.
“Killjoy, can I talk to you?” asked Raze as she approached
The other ignored.
“Klara, can I talk to you?” Asked again
KAY/O was awkwardly looking at both while Raze tried to get Klara's attention
“I mean, sure you can take him on a fight but-”
“KLARA BÖHRINGER, CAN YOU PLEASE LISTEN TO ME?” shouted Tayane for everyone in the room to hear
“Jeez, there's no need to scream, Alves” complained Killjoy as she finally looked at Raze “I'm right beside you”
“Oh, really? It didn't seem like it a few moments ago. Why am I only relevant if I'm being loud? If I'm drawing attention to you?”
“That's not true Raze, you know you're always-”
“Then why have you been ignoring me?!” spitted her
“I haven't” replied her carefully choosing her words
At this moment, Raze was consumed by anger.
“WHAT DO YOU MEAN, ‘I HAVEN'T’? I tried to talk to you before I went out to the mission four days ago, I tried again yesterday and you barely even looked at my face.” She spat “Why is it? Are you angry with what I said about Kingdom? Are you so arrogant you can't realize the damage they’ve done even conviving with people who are miserable because of them?!”
Killjoy was crying. Raze had never talked like that to her, she had never even shouted at her. They did argue, and a lot, in the past, but never to the point where Raze visibly showed her rage.
“Oh, crying are we?” Continued her “Why? Because your family was killed for Kingdom's interests? Because your sister is dying because of your work? Huh? Why?”
“Raze, I'm sorry!” She cried “I didn't… I don't…”
“Seriously, Klara, breaking down over things that don't affect you at all? Why just now? Why not five years ago, when Amir’s family all died? Why not when Kingdom took over Ryo’s home neighborhood and made all locals’ lives miserable? You had all the time in the world to cry, why only now?” at this point, Killjoy was begging Raze to listen to her “I'm gonna tell you why; you're not crying because you have sympathy for them, you're crying because I'm angry at you, because you fear you’ll lose someone you love. You ignored me for days after I told you some things that were true and now you think you deserve pardon for being careless about people's lives”
“Raze, I’m sorry, I didn't know any of that happened when it happened, I-”
“But you don't want to do anything to stop that from happening again either!”
“It's my job, Raze! I can't just turn my back from myself”
“Then die, Böhringer, die!” Shouted Raze as she slapped Killjoy’s face.
And with that, the woman walked back to the duelist section.

Any of my ocs!! I'll list a few in the read more for anyone interested (please I'm so bored lol). I'm also open to doing not my ocs and just fanon interps of characters! Just any fandoms I'm apart of ^^
Ocs (with brief description)
Nurse (tf2 oc) - hyper-emotional/sensitive german girl who plays therapist/artist for the tf2 mercs. Has the mindset of a traumatized child, has Borderline Personality Disorder and age regression.
Technician (tf2 oc) - dead inside, sarcastic, short tempered Irish middle aged man who struggles opening up to others. Though he doesn't show a lot of emotions, he's hopelessly in love with Engi and will refuse to admit it (despite how obvious he is). Has trauma and some form of anxiety disorders, multiple types overlapping into generalized anxiety disorder type. Also has lowkey drinking issues
Josef Stauber (oc) - main character in JaS, he's a narcissistic actor who at heart is a good person, just struggling with trauma, mental illness, and learning found family through friends and therapy. Has Narcissistic Personality Disorder and Bipolar disorder (type 1).
Sauer (oc) - hypersensitive but bubbly pathospirit who loves painting, hanging out with friends, and listening to music. She suffers with generalized anxiety disorder
Khalil (Tlt oc) - neurodivergent (unsure what atm) scrapped secret boss for the Love I Need video game franchise. When Zero_One was trying to get Skull Guy out of the game, Khalil snuck his way out in one attempt and seeks out revenge on Skull Guy for an outlet of his trauma of abandonment. Will likely have a character arc. Has intense abandonment issues. Species is a shapeshifter. Character still somewhat new
Crylic (tlt oc/tombsona) - age regressing tombsona who finds hosts through visual art. She has similar attributes to the rubberhose animation style. Has general anxiety disorder and has trauma from past hosts.
Hawley (deltarune oc) - traumatized neurodivergent darkner who is a secret boss, being hooked up to a shock machine that shocks her every few minutes. She's a surreal artist who uses art as an escapism from her issues. Pining over Spamton. Likely has some form of bipolar.
Cicierega (deltarune oc) - a painter who sells different artist based things to the main deltarune gang. He's bubbly and an optimist, doing his best to help his friends. Though he's haunted by the situation with Hawley, who he thinks might not be dead.
Lynn A. Lee (Deltarune oc) - realist who expresses their view through their art of realism. Very cold, doesn't like dealing with people, but will give any information needed.
Cain Sephtis (oc) - neurodivergent childish crazy goofy conspiracist who does acting as his stand in job. Has trauma and is getting evaluated for his mental health after friends take a worry about his well being (im unsure of what he has atm but hes def NOT NEUROTYPICAL!). Very naive and stubborn.
Katz Macpherson (oc) - Autistic quiet actor who's hyperfixed on video games, retro content, and theater/acting. Has trauma and is sensitive to certain things (look at autism headcanon post for specifics) but does his best to not let it take over his life.
Serene Sugar (oc) - tired animator who's in therapy. Tries her bedt to help others but will stand her ground when her boundaries are overstepped. Has recurrent depression and recurrent anxiety.
Azi (oc) - Klarsehen spirit who's socially awkward, struggles to show emotion, and is brutally honest. They remember their life previous to their spirit life, has trauma from said life, and is currently learning to open up and maintain relationships.
Clove Salvador (oc) - shoegaze aesthetic, mellow, aloof, laissez-faire Filipino guy who does skateboarding, acting, and music as hobbies/jobs. No, he's not good at music, but he doesn't know that.
Saffron Wood - British, confident leader who does acting as her job. She's supportive and will help her friends, even if it means laying hands on someone. But will also call her friends out on their bullcrap.
River Toussaint (oc) - Josef’s therapist. He's a nerdy goofy optimist who believes that almost everyone can change and that there's good in everyone. Super empathetic, but if someone needs a wake up call he will stand his ground.
Jasper Macpherson (oc)
ANY JOSEF AND SAUER OC NOT MENTIONED
Misty Cage (mortal kombat oc) - calculated, pessimistic, quiet, closed up girl who barely knows of any of her extended family. Has trauma and bipolar disorder (type 2).
Ari Stryker (mortal kombat oc) - loud, impulsive, neurotic, short tempered rebel who's got an ego as big as her vocabulary. Runs on pure emotion.
Saimin (mortal kombat oc) - charismatic, manipulative, smooth talking, deal making spirit who died in a previous mortal kombat tournament and desperately wants to find a way back to being a physical being in earth realm, even if it means crushing a few souls in the process. Despite being a generally awful person, he's a man of his word and is more fond of the other mk ocs than he wish he was
Bubonic (overwatch oc) - Schizophrenic healer who views the world very black and white due to trauma and near death experiences. Very clingy in relationships, platonic or romantic (currently pining for Lucio). Has Schizophrenia and bipolar.

I'm genderfluid (they/them pronouns, but I generally fluctuate between very feminine, kinda agender, and 100% a dude). I'm trying to think of names. If you're willing, could I get a list of genderless/masculine names that are either kind of dark (like after authors or spooky things) or names that are affiliated with either DC or Marvel superheroes (ex. Wally (Wally West), Parker (Peter Parker), Storm (Ororo Munroe, Sue and Johnny Storm), etc?)
Hi there! Sure, I can try to come up with some dark or superhero genderless/masc names.
Alaric, Argus, Arthur, Avarice, Balor, Barry, Ben, Brahm, Bruce, Clarke, Chaos, Chimer, Chimero, Clove, Daemon, Dali, Dirk/Dyrk, Flash, Grayson, Griffin/Gryphon, Hades, Judas, Leander, Max, Mort, Oleander, Reed, Salem, Salvadore, Scott, Steve, Stoker, Thanatos, Thorn, Wade, Wolf, Xander

VARIETY: SL28, SL34 PROCESS: Fully Washed AREA: Karatina, Nyeri County, Central Kenya PRODUCER: Karindundu Factory (Barichu Farmars Co-op Society) ALTITUDE: 1750 m . ー ー ◼︎ EL SALVADOR FINCA PENA REDONDA Natural TASTE NOTE: Raisin, Plum, Oolong tea, Dates, White Chocolate, Clove, Tartaric acidity, Honey, Caramel, Well structured . VARIETY: Bourbon PROCESS: Natural AREA: El Tunel, La Palma, Chalatenango PRODUCER: Carlos Mauricio Lemus (Finca Peña Redonda) ALTITUDE: 1400 - 1500 m . (COFFEE COUNTY) ーーー ーーーーー < 写真の作品 > - 356 coupe & skateboarder(1/43 scale/ Not for sale) ーーーーー [ Ken's World ] "356a" や "911 Carrera RS" を中心としたミニカーに オールドスクール(60s-70s)カルチャーを落とし込んだ 遊び心あふれるカスタマイズの世界 ーーー #thanxalways #edbfl+ #38 #kenhmiles #diecastcustomizer #collector #356a #911carrerars #oldschool #culture #surf #skate #newbeans #coffeecounty #edbfl38kenmiles #specialtycoffee #flowertea #singleo #kinto #mamigashi #hototogisu #flowercoffeebb #everydaybeautiful #shonan #chigasaki #yuzostreet (FLOWER COFFEE / BREW BAR) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQUZ2hwDbnl/?utm_medium=tumblr

the fact of the garden
by minnie bruce patt
With this rain I am satisfied we will be together in the spring. Seeds of water on my window glass. transparent sprouts and rootlets. In your backyard steady rain throughout the heavy dirt we dug in, our shovels excavating some history of the tiny garden
Our blades cut through the design of a previous digger; rotting boards, rocks, earthworms as big as young snakes; a tarnished spoon, pink champagne foil from a party; a palmful of blue feathers from a dead jay.
We dug and planted. We intend to have a history here behind this rented house. Despite the owner there is a secret between us and the ground. In the wet dirt, our fleshy bulbs and the pink cloves of garlic are making nests of roots. The fact of the garden has satisfied me all morning; that we worked side by side, your name round when I spoke it: that my fingers worked in the dirt like rain, the ground like a made bed with its mulch of leaves, orderly, full of possibilities, acts of love not yet performed.
Now the water’s slap on my window has made me think of something else, suddenly, what I don’t want to, the way I wake up in the night, think I’ve heard a gun shot. The memory, news story you told me a week ago: the farmers south, far south, El Salvador, afraid to go into their fields. What does their dirt look like? I don’t know. Instead I see that some thing is being planted: U.S. soldiers, watching as others bury a dead hand, arm, head, torso.
To be afraid to put your hand into the dirt. To be afraid to go look at your ground: that it has been cut like skin, will bulge out like cut muscle: that on a fair day there will be subterranean thunder, then a loud, continuous hiss of blood. I wish I could see only the flowering bulbs voluptuous in the spring. But what is planted is what comes. In the fall, plant stones: in the winter, the ground gapes with stones like teeth.
I hold to the plan we thought of: small: full of possibilities against despair: us handing out sheets of paper, thousands, the list of crimes: sharp thin papers delving up something in people in parking lots, shopping malls. What will come of this? Perhaps people to stand with us outside the buildings, to say again: Not in my name. Words adamant as rock, and actions, here, in the coldest months, before soldiers move again in the fields to the south.

The Socially Conscious Shopper’s Guide to Buying Coffee and Tea
Photo-illustration: Eater
Expand your collection with these online shops
A cup of coffee or tea might seem like such a simple ritual. But our daily cup (or two, or three) owes everything to our colonial, slave-built economy that relied on European and American trade with Central and South America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia. The legacy of exploitation in the coffee and tea industries still manifests today, depressing wages and earnings for workers and degrading natural ecosystems. One, though not the only, aspect of that legacy is trade. The fair trade movement that solidified in the late 1980s as a Fair Trade certification sought to tip the scales in favor of workers. More recently, the direct trade movement — which, as its name suggests, is built on direct exchanges between farmers and roasters — has emerged as an alternative to create still greater transparency and worker profit.
The coronavirus pandemic has upended our most trusted routines, down to how we’re buying and drinking our coffee. Maybe all of this has prompted you to rethink what goes into your daily cup, who made it possible, and who profits. Maybe you’re tired of parsing corporate statements like the one Starbucks produced earlier this month, after it initially prohibited employees from wearing Black Lives Matter shirts. Whether you’re in a rut with your morning brew and want to shake things up, you’re new to home-brewing and aren’t sure where to shop, or you want to support more BIPOC-owned and socially conscious businesses, let this list of 30 sources for buying coffee and tea online be a source of inspiration.
These purveyors source their product from around the world, and many are direct trade or are working to reimagine who owns tea and coffee culture. All of them offer online shopping, and some may offer contactless pick-ups. If you like the convenience of subscriptions, many offer those, too.
Whole Bean Coffee
Many coffee roasters source their beans from at least two global regions. If a specific region or country is the focus, that’s noted below.
BLK & Bold: You may have seen BLK & Bold at Whole Foods, but the brand’s selection of blends and single-origin coffees, as well as its teas, is also available directly online. Founded by Rod Johnson and Pernell Cezar, BLK & Bold donates 5 percent of its profits to organizations that benefit young people in Black communities in major cities across America.
Black Baza Coffee (India): This coffee roaster and grassroots organization works with growers in India to create a socially and environmentally sustainable model that supports biodiversity — a variety of species essential to healthy and resilient ecosystems. Arabica and robusta coffee beans, as well as chicory, are available from a number of partner coffee producers and microlots.

The company is committed to growing coffee careers in the Historic West End community while changing the face of specialty coffee “to include the black and brown folks who have been cropped out.”
Red Bay Coffee: Founded by the Oakland-based artist Keba Konte, Red Bay has a mission of community connection and grower empowerment. Sweet Unity Farms Coffee (Tanzania): Started by David Robinson, the son of baseball titan Jackie Robinson, this farm belongs to a community of third-generation coffee farmers in Tanzania. The brand, which champions community investment and direct trade between farmers and roasters, sells 100 percent Arabica beans grown by family-owned cooperatives in Tanzania and Ethiopia and partners with family-owned roasters in California and New Jersey.
Tea
Just like coffee, tea is a fresh product that loses complexity and aroma over time, so for specialty teas, always note harvest date. Because a number of tea sellers sell “tea” in the colloquial sense — infusions of botanical ingredients — we use tea here to mean Camellia sinensis as well as yerba mate and herbal infusions. Sellers that specialize exclusively in Camellia sinensis from one region or country of origin are noted below.
Adjourn Teahouse: Founded by LaTonia Cokely and based in Washington, D.C., Adjourn specializes in aromatic hand-blended black teas with a wellness focus, incorporating botanicals like blue butterfly pea flowers, lemongrass, carrot, and ginger.
Brooklyn Tea: From their store in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, Ali Wright and Jamila McGill offer a wide variety of teas, including green and white teas and tea blends, aged pu’ehr and oolong, mate, Rooibos, and other herbal tisanes. Brooklyn Tea partners with Tahuti Ma’at to provide compost to a community garden in Crown Heights, Brooklyn.
Calabash Tea & Tonic: Owned by a naturopath and fifth-generation herbalist, this D.C.-based company has an express wellness focus and offers herbal tonics alongside its flavored botanical blends.
Chai Walli (India): This Australian company, founded by an Indian Australian, works with organic and fair trade farms in India’s Assam Valley to source its tea. The range of small-batch spiced tea blends incorporates Ayurvedic knowledge from the founder’s own family. Ships to the United States.
Cuples Tea House: A tea store in Baltimore that ships nationwide, this is a one-stop shop for black and green tea blends, milk oolong, South African mate, and flavored teas, as well as herbal blends like chamomile, South African Rooibos, and hibiscus.

Just Add Honey Tea Company: This Atlanta-based tea company carries a large selection of caffeinated teas and tea blends, from matcha to a high-caffeine mix of green tea, mate, and dried papaya. It also offers non-caffeinated herbal options, like chicory and cinnamon.
INI Sips: A family- and veteran-owned company based in New Britain, Connecticut, this shop sells 16 teas, including one ceremonial-grade matcha, and a small selection of direct trade coffees.
Kettl (Japan): Through its unique relationships with tea growers in Japan, Kettl has become the go-to for restaurants and Japanese tea lovers for the freshness and quality of its teas, which, because of supply chains, would not otherwise be available in the U.S. It has a small brick-and-mortar storefront in Manhattan but ships its shincha, matcha, genmaicha, rare Japanese oolong and black tea, and sobacha nationwide.
Kolkata Chai Co. (India): Through their New York shop, Ayan and Ani Sanyal — motivated by the appropriation of masala chai that they observed — aim to reclaim chai’s cultural roots. The company currently offers two DIY chai kits, a masala chai with Assam, green cardamom, cinnamon, black cardamom, black pepper, and cloves, and rose masala chai.

Serengeti Teas & Spices (Africa): This Harlem fixture isn’t just for herbal teas, although it carries a wide variety, including moringa, Moroccan mint teas, sorrel, South African Rooibos, and turmeric blends. It also specializes in premium and rare coffee, tea, and cocoa from countries around Africa.

Feed a family for a week with a single bag of beans
Beans are full of protein and minerals. Plus, they’re super tasty. Mary Kearl
Beans are healthy—high in protein and fiber and packed with nutrients like iron, magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, and more. They’re also an affordable and versatile way to feed your family—a one-pound bag of red kidney beans costs less than $2 and can make up to 11 servings. If you’re a single adult or have a small family, that can add up to a lot of nutritious and delicious food for a low price.
But because even the healthiest of foods becomes a drag if you eat it the same way five days in a row, the key is to cook your beans in different ways. Stretch your bag of beans into unique meals with these three exciting recipes passed down from a traditional Salvadoran cook. You’ll be able to build off of these dishes, and either enjoy them during the week or freeze them for later.
We produced 17 servings, which for our family of three translates to a total of more than five meals. Adding these recipes to your cooking repertoire is a great way to eat healthy on a budget.
The shopping list
Two cloves of garlic
A one-pound bag of red kidney beans
A large onion
A dozen eggs
8 ounces of cream cheese
Corn tortillas (how many will depend on your taste and hunger level)
Two avocados
A one-pound bag of white rice
8 ounces of queso fresco (or a more common cheese, like mozzarella or Monterey Jack)
Total cost: $18 (lower if you have some ingredients at home)
Based on these costs, these three recipes can help you prepare a high-value meal on a budget. Compared to what the average American household spends annually on food, if you cooked a bag of beans twice a month at $1.06 per meal, you could cover the main meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) of a family of three for 10 days. This would result in monthly savings of a little over $200.
Meal No. 1: sopa de frijoles (bean soup)
If you want to up the carb count on this meal, you can replace the tortillas with delicious French bread (pan frances). You sure won’t go hungry. Mary Kearl
There are many ways to prepare beans. Frying is a popular option, but when you’re starting from scratch, that involves a two-step process: cooking the beans, then frying them. If you’re already cooking them, we’ve got great news for you: you’ve essentially just made sopa de frijoles, a popular soup in El Salvador.
Cook time: 1.5-2 hours (or until the beans are soft)
Ingredients
1 pound of red kidney beans (can be substituted with black beans, if preferred)
Two garlic cloves
1/4 of a large white onion
Table salt (to taste)
10 cups of water (to start)
(Optional) three or more eggs
Tools
Knife and cutting board
Tablespoons
Measuring cups
A large pot
A strainer
Directions
Rinse the beans with water and drain them with a strainer.
Cut off one-quarter of the onion and put it in a large pot. There’s no need to slice it—it’ll break apart later when you boil it. If you want a hint of onion flavor without actual chunks in your soup, you can infuse it by wrapping the onion in aluminum foil, and poking several holes with a thick needle or knife tip. Once the beans are fully cooked, you can take this out.
Peel the garlic cloves, cutting off the ends. Put them in the pot. As above, if you only want a hint of garlic, you can infuse the soup as with the onion.
Add the beans to the pot containing the onions and garlic, and pour in seven cups of water. Salt to taste and place it on your stove over high heat.
Once the water begins to boil (after about 5 minutes), lower the temperature to medium-high.
Add water as needed, just before the water level begins to drop below the top layer of beans. This isn’t a dish you can set and leave—you’ll want to keep an eye on your pot, making sure there’s always some water inside and the beans never dry out. Expect to add at least 3 cups of water throughout the process. You don’t want to find out what burned beans smell like.
After an hour and 20 minutes, when you have about 10 minutes left of cooking time, add those optional eggs to be hardboiled along with your beans. Put the eggs into your pot whole and let them cook.
To see whether the beans are ready, take a spoonful and give your dish a taste test. They should feel soft as you take your first bite.
Serve with: fresh avocado slices, a wedge of queso fresco, and tortillas (grilled for about a minute each in a frying pan)
Servings: six bowls of soup
Meal No. 2: frijoles fritos (refried beans)
Turn those bean soup leftovers into refried beans. Mary Kearl
Frijoles fritos are what makes a traditional Salvadoran breakfast, and are commonly accompanied by eggs (sunny-side-up or scrambled), Salvadoran sour cream (crema), queso duro or queso fresco (hard or fresh cheese), and French bread (pan frances), or homemade Salvadoran tortillas(which are thicker than the more widely available tortillas in the U.S.). In the recipe below, we’ve offered substitutes for when these traditional components of the meal are not available.
Ingredients
4 cups of bean soup (from Meal No. 1), broth included
3 tablespoons of vegetable oil
1 tablespoon of chopped onion
Tools
Knife and cutting board
Tablespoons
Blender
Large, deep frying pan
Directions
Heat the vegetable oil in the frying pan.
Chop the onion and place it in the pan. Cook on medium-high for about 1-2 minutes, until it’s golden brown.
Remove the grilled onions from the pan and put them in the blender. Leave the oil in the frying pan to be used in a later step.
Add 4 cups of bean soup to the blender and puree until it’s thoroughly mixed. For thicker refried beans, you can strain the soup’s broth.
Using the oil you saved in Step 3, pour the mix into a deep skillet and fry it on medium-high heat.
As the beans begin to bubble, stir as necessary to prevent them from sticking to the pan. Once the bubbling is consistent, lower the heat to medium. Cook until the oil has mixed completely with the beans, which usually takes about 10 minutes.
Serve with: fresh avocado slices, eggs sunny-side-up or however you like them, a generous dollop of cream cheese, and grilled tortillas (fried in a pan for about a minute each)
Servings: six plates of refried beans
Meal No. 3: casamiento (rice and beans)
Casamiento can be served with eggs, tortillas, and avocado, but you can also eat it with your favorite green salad. Mary Kearl
Casamiento, which literally means “marriage”—referring to the marriage of the beans and rice central to the recipe—is a traditional dish prepared in El Salvador and Central America. It’s often served with eggs, cheese, and tortillas or French bread (pan frances) for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, or as a side dish served along with a heavier meal like carne asada (barbecue).
Ingredients
1/2 cup of rice
1 tablespoon of chopped tomatoes
1 tablespoon of chopped onion
2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
3/4 cups of water
1 1/2 cups of refried beans (from Meal No. 2)
Salt to taste
Tools
Knife and cutting board
Tablespoons
Measuring cups
Medium frying pan with lid
Large frying pan
Directions
Heat oil on medium-high for about 30 seconds, then mix in the chopped tomatoes and onion, and the half-cup of rice. Let it cook for a minute, stirring every 10 seconds.
Add in 3/4 cups of water and salt to taste, then lower the heat to medium. Place a lid on the pan and cook until all the water is absorbed by the rice, which takes about 10 to 15 minutes.
In a separate pan, reheat your refried beans for about 3 minutes. Once the beans are warm, add your cooked rice to the pan of refried beans, then mix together. Cook your rice and bean mix for about 2 minutes on medium heat.
Serve with: a dollop of cream cheese, a wedge of queso fresco, a portion of avocado, and grilled tortillas
Servings: five plates of casamiento
Now you know three different and frugal ways to prepare beans—and maybe you even picked up some Spanish culinary vocabulary along the way. Go practice your cooking, pile up your savings, and impress your friends and loved ones.
