Decent movie. I do have some criticisms about a few of the choices they made. But still. Decent movie. I’d almost definitely watch it again

My Best and Worst Films of 2021

So yeah it probably seems a bit weird that I'm posting my best/worst films of 2021 list in 2025, well there's a reason for that.

Since for my 2020 list I had managed to cover both theatrical and streaming releases, I had planed on doing the same from then on. Unfortunately due to a combination of procrastination and me finally managing to get a job after donkey's years of searching, I've fallen a bit behind on streaming. But it was starting to get a bit ridiculous so I've decided to say fuck it and post rough versions of my 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024 lists with only the theatrical releases so far, and I'll just add the streaming ones on in italic as I try and catch up over the year.

Hopefully I'll have the lists done by the end of the year. Hopefully.

So anyway 2021... well the cinemas have finally reopened after the lockdown ended, and the local cinema (The Light) that had been announced since before me and my grandparents moved to the area has finally opened and will be my regular cinema from now on (with some exceptions like if a film I want to see isn't showing there). Plus several months in they introduced MyLight Premier membership allowing anyone who signs up for £15.99 free access for any films showing, a discount on food and invites to members only screenings and previews, I naturally signed up like a shot.

Anyway I saw 57 new theatrical releases in 2021 (which ones - along with any streaming releases - can be found on my Letterboxd page: ‎(letterboxd.com/firebirdmaximus/list/2021-releases).

And once again a note to non-UK viewers, as with previous years, since I’m English and live in England and subsequently watch films at cinemas in England, this list will be going by UK release dates so If you see a film on the list that you swore was from 2020 it was probably not released here until 2021, contrarywise If your surprised that a particular movie from this year is not on the list it might not have been released here til 2022.

If you see a streaming film here on my list and it's not in italics, that means it probably got a limited theatrical release somewhere in my area and that's how I saw it.

Wise Men Fear Emily Elizabeth

Everybody knows the story of Clifford the Big Red Dog. The lighthearted, heartwarming tale of a little girl with a little dog who, thanks to the love of the girl, becomes far from little. Comical mishap after comical mishap ensues, but the girl loves him all the same. D’aww. And that’s how everybody saw him… that is, until the rise of the Internet.

Then, people started to think about just how terrifying Clifford would be in real life, and the ramifications of having to deal with a dog as big as he is. A dog that size would need a whole lot of food. And a dog shit the size that Clifford would put out would smell absolutely repugnant! And God help us if he hasn’t been neutered. Many memes and videos were made about how difficult cleanup would be and how Clifford is actually a giant monster and all that, and it became sort of an Internet inside joke to fear Clifford.

And yet, despite all this knowledge, I still do not fear Clifford. As far as kaijus go, he’s both on the smaller side (“only” the size of a two story building) and rather nice. He doesn’t rampage through the city like Godzilla. He does not lust after women and kidnap them like King Kong. For the most part, in the books, he acts like a regular lovable dog, merely giant sized. This was actually changed in animated adaptations to make him more sentient, giving him the ability to speak, to varying degrees. But he remains just as friendly.

No, I do not fear Clifford. I am instead afraid of his owner, Emily Elizabeth Howard.

Everyone I have mentioned this fear to has laughed it off. “What’s so scary about Emily Elizabeth? She’s just a regular girl!” And on the surface, that appears to be true. There does not appear to be anything frightening about Emily Elizabeth, aside from the fact that she has two first names. Clifford himself, as innocent as he is, appears to be the scariest part of the Clifford mythos, especially if you think way too long and hard about it.

But not long and hard enough, evidently. Try this on for size, pun intended- who is the one who caused Clifford to grow in the first place?

Let’s rewind back to the beginning, where I described the story of Clifford’s origin- that “of a little girl with a little dog who, thanks to the love of the girl, becomes far from little”. Anyone with a functioning brain should be able to put two and two together. Emily Elizabeth is that girl, and it was her love that caused Clifford to grow so huge. 

And keep in mind the inherent potential horror that the Internet has brought upon Clifford. All the food to feed just this one animal, all the property damage that would be caused by playtime gone awry, all the ginormous, atrocious smelling dog shit… all on the hands of this one girl.

Well, not literally in her hands. Especially in the case of the dog shit. That’s disgusting.

And I know that this power is that of Emily Elizabeth’s, and not tied directly to Clifford or a simple power that anyone with a loving enough heart can give. Because that would mean either Clifford was unloved as a puppy or that nobody in town loves their pets. And not only are neither of those true, but if they were, that would be depressing as hell. Granted, the 2021 live action movie implies that the growth is partially the work of some magical eccentric old man, but this old man has never appeared in any prior piece of Clifford media and the live action movie has very little to do with preexisting Clifford canon and should not be taken into account.

With that said, given that this power is tied to Emily Elizabeth and not Clifford… there is no reason to believe her power is exclusive to Clifford.

Given how her parents haven’t grown, her previous pet Daffodil hasn’t grown (though she has mysteriously disappeared), and even Clifford didn’t begin to grow until a concentrated burst of love from Emily Elizabeth herself, we can suspect that her powers require some concentration and a massive amount of love to use. But still, this means that anything Emily Elizabeth shows extreme affection towards starts growing enormous.

And Clifford? Before Emily Elizabeth made him grow, he was just a tiny little puppy. A runt of the litter. Can easily fit in a bowl of dog food and get lost in the kibble. Too small for even the littlest collar.

And over a matter of mere days, Emily Elizabeth’s love has made him grow to the size of a two story house, only stopping when Emily Elizabeth told him to stop.

Imagine if Emily Elizabeth loved a larger, less gentle pet, like a wolf.

Imagine if Emily Elizabeth reached teenhood, and her hormones started kicking in and she started having crushes on boys. Or girls, depending on her sexuality.

Imagine if Emily Elizabeth was a narcissist.

And believe it or not, it gets worse. You know how the more Emily Elizabeth loves something, the bigger it grows? Well, what would happen in the opposite scenario? What would happen if Emily Elizabeth HATED something?

Because the opposite of love is hate.

And you know what the opposite of grow is, right?

Imagine if you really managed to fuck up, and got Emily Elizabeth to hate you. Like, really REALLY hate you.

Instead of two stories tall, you’d wind up two inches tall.

Except you wouldn’t, because Clifford only stopped growing when Emily Elizabeth told him to stop growing. And Emily Elizabeth wouldn’t want you to stop shrinking. She’d want to see you shrink to the size of a grain of sand, or a cell, or an organelle, a molecule, an atom, a subatomic particle, a quark, one of those funky theoretical strings…

She’d want to see you vanish into nothing. She’d hate you that much.

Now imagine if Emily Elizabeth somehow hated the moon, or the sun. Two celestial bodies necessary for the survival of our planet and all of its life… gone. Because one overpowered little girl hated them.

Emily Elizabeth is a greater threat than her dog could ever hope to be. At the end of the day, all Clifford does is normal dog stuff on a not-so-normal scale. The worst he could do is take a shit in the grass the height of an average man, or lick his balls on an otherwise lovely day in the park and get confused as to why everyone is so grossed out. Emily Elizabeth can alter the size of anything, ANYONE, depending on how she feels about them. She’s practically a walking B-movie factory.

Yes, I admit it. I am afraid of Emily Elizabeth. Why shouldn’t I be? She can make monsters out of those she loves, and specks of dust out of those she hates. We’re all lucky she’s so nice. But she’s dangerous. Too dangerous. Best case scenario, we must teach her to control her powers, and when she should use them, which should ideally be never. Worst case scenario, we must destroy her while we still have the chance. Because she’s the real monster here, not Clifford.

On second thought, maybe Clifford is the monster. And everybody is afraid of the monster. But nobody is afraid of the monster behind the monster. Well… almost nobody.

Fools fear the monster. Wise men fear the monster maker.

Wise men fear Emily Elizabeth.

My Old Garbage WALL-E Human AU

To put this simply, I once made an AU where the robot characters in WALL-E were humans, which wouldn’t work because THE MOVIE WORKS BEST WHEN THEY’RE NOT HUMANS! But anyway, these are all the descriptions for the characters, and drawings of them, that I wrote and drew back in 2021. They’re outdated, so it’s no surprise they’re gonna be god awful. I'm only posting this to let you guys know that this was something I did.

Wallace “Wally” Eaton (WALL-E, age 21): A cheerful and curious young man who lives on and works to restore Earth. He is quite easily distracted, and his heart seems to pull him into both good and bad places. He is a Hello, Dolly aficionado. He and his siblings were born on a ship in space, where they lived until he was seven. He didn’t actually start working until he was old enough to. Ever since they came to Earth, the only people he’d ever seen were his siblings, his mother and his father up until he died. Because of all of this, Wally has had a huge craving for a change. When the Protasov family arrived, he was too nervous to speak to them. He was especially shy around the one he found most attractive, who he later found out was Eve. He soon realized that he was falling in love with her, and he didn’t want such a big chance to pass him by.

Yaneli Eaton (age 22): Wally’s older sister, who’s bright, goofy and enthusiastic. She is known to shout whenever she has something to say, so Wally coined the nickname “Yell,” which she doesn’t mind. She doesn’t care that much about her looks. The family splits up every day to do their work in different areas, but Yaneli and Wally found that they have a lot of fun when working in the same area together. Yaneli is also a big fan of Footloose. When she was younger, she fell on something and knocked two of her teeth out; they were replaced with fake silver teeth.

Clifford Eaton (age 24): Wally and Yaneli’s no-nonsense older brother. He takes his work very seriously, and he doesn’t like it when his siblings goof off. The day they found a plant in the ground, Clifford was working with them. He felt like he had to babysit them; he feels like he needs to keep his eyes on his other family members just in case something happens. Clifford is a really nice person even though he gets impatient easily. He’ll listen to you if you need to talk to him. (No, Bria and Geo did not name him after the big red dog.)

Bria Eaton (born Bria Ricci, age 55): Clifford, Yaneli and Wally’s mother. When Wally was little, his hair was curly; Bria was thought to be where he got that from. She’s a friendly, outgoing and caring woman that knows what her children want, and she comforted Wally when she noticed how upset he was. She let him try and pursue Eve, so long as he stayed safe doing it.

Geoffery “Geo” Eaton (lived to be 49): The siblings’ father and Bria’s husband. Geo wanted to make the Earth clean and beautiful more than anyone else his wife and kids knew. They wanted to help him do it, so they moved to Earth, where Geo taught the others what they needed to know. He put in everything he had and believed with all his being that things would get better. Sadly to say, he died in an accident when his children were 15, 16 and 18 respectively.

Eva “Eve” Protasova (EVE, age 21): A beautiful scout who visited Earth with her parents and her four sisters. She is a middle sibling, and she, Nina and Jane are training to be a part of the E.V.A.S. like their father. Eve tends to be very focused on her goals, so similarly to Clifford with his job, she isn’t foolish about her training. She is focused and serious much of the time, but it’s very easy for her to open up to someone. Wally made a good first impression on her, but it took some time for him to grow on her. She actually found that she has much in common with him. Eve is very smart, and she has a really good sense of humor. She has a bit of a life goals problem.

Nina Protasova (age 25): The second oldest of Andrei and Tatyana’s daughters. She is polite and cordial towards others. She has very well-developed senses and is great at noticing small details. She can tell when someone is feeling excited, sad, nervous or angry. Nina likes to eat, so she often can’t wait for lunch or dinner. She sometimes orders the liquified food in a cup even though her dad wouldn’t recommend doing it. She’s almost done with her higher education.

Sofia Earnshaw (age 29): Eve’s oldest sister. Her whole life, she’s had a heart of gold. She’s dependable and helpful. Sofia has been studying to be a doctor, and she is currently in her residency program. Sofia is hardworking, but it’s a bit too easy to make her laugh. She doesn’t have a very good sense of humor. She is married to a nanny named Norah Earnshaw, and she lives in her cabin with her. She called her often on Earth to let her know she was okay. When her sisters were little, Sofia used to take them out for ice cream.

Jane Protasova (age 19): The older of Eve’s two younger sisters. She is an absolute sweetheart, and she loves her family very much. She also has a great fear of death, and she is easily frightened. She doesn’t always look before she leaps. Sometimes, she forgets to read her science books. Jane is in love with Otto’s apprentice, Grover, whom she met at French immersion camp. She has the curliest hair out of all the members of the Protasov family we know of. Jane doesn’t like to talk about certain things, so she writes about them in a digital journal.

Dawn Protasova (age 17): The youngest Protasova sister. Dawn was originally planning to train to be part of the E.V.A.S., but she had lots of energy, sunshine and spirit wrapped within her. She decided she wanted to bring people happiness with the Celestial Sweeties instead. Dawn doesn’t always follow the rules; she brought her cat, Caramel Cookie, to Earth with her even though her family told her not to. She couldn’t stand leaving him all alone. She helped Wally get closer to Eve. She also doesn’t really know what she’s going to do with her life.

Andrei Protasov (age 63): Sofia, Nina, Eve, Jane and Dawn’s father. He is one of the most famous people on the ship, as well as a good friend and trusted general to the captain. He put everything he had into getting where he is now. He is a just and determined man, but he has a faint heart, and it’s easy to break it. If he wasn’t such an emotional person, though, his zest for life would probably fade.

Tatyana Protasova (born Tatyana Sokolova, age 62): The girls’ mother and Andrei’s wife. She is appreciative of beauty, and one thing she loves to do is stargaze. She also likes to learn about different places and their history. Tatyana is humorous and witty, and she’ll give her family a laugh if they need it. She’s pretty protective of them. She thinks that Wally is adorable.

Mordecai “Moe” Oastler (M-O, age 20): A guy who works on the ship as a cleaner, making sure that there aren’t any germs lurking around. To help him get around quickly, he wears shoes with wheels at the bottoms. He’s aggressive and easily agitated, and once someone puts a terrible thought in his mind, it’s hard for him to get it out. He’s thirsty to have his revenge on Sparrow and Buddy since he couldn’t put up with them picking on him or Van. He even made up a song mocking them that he sang to himself often.

Otto Hoffman (AUTO, age 48): Captain Brian’s first mate, although he commands pretty much everything on the ship. (Brian is the captain’s first name in this AU.) Otto used to be bursting with life and self-expression and was also quite mischievous, but now, he’s emotionless and monotone. This is the result of an operation performed on him, as a result of which he became a cyborg. They performed it to save his life after a vehicle crushed him. Otto was quite close to Brian as the two have known each other since childhood. They were the best of friends back then.

Grover Gaumont (GO-4, age 19): Otto’s young apprentice. He has dreamed of becoming the captain someday, but now, it looks like that’s not going to happen. He’s really clever, and his sense of agility is amazing. Whenever Grover is stressed, bored or unsatisfied, he emotionally eats. Grover is in love with Jane, and they both know that the other person likes them, but they lead very busy lives, so they’ve never had time to go on a date.

Van Cumeskey (VAQ-M, age 20): A super close friend to Moe. He is a housekeeper, so he and Moe work together often. He’s a kind guy who loves to give people hugs. He’s severely allergic to dust. He is often subjected to Buddy and Sparrow’s teasing, but people like Moe and Priscilla are there to defend him.

Priscilla Teel (PR-T, age 21): A novice beautician and an aspiring cosmetologist. She’s hyperactive and an enormous chatterbox. She really loves to give people makeovers, and when she’s off duty, she regularly goes to the ship’s spa. At night, she likes to wear fuzzy socks with parrots on them. Priscilla makes it her mission to keep her friends safe from being mistreated. She and Moe are now Wally’s two very best friends.

Sheryl Anne “Sherrie Ann” Breland (BRL-A, age 18): The youngest person in Wally’s new circle of friends. On the ship, she was working her first job, which was a job as a poolside waitress. She will let you under her umbrella if you need some love. She’s also fun-loving, and she loves to dance. Sherrie Ann carries around an umbrella and wears visor glasses almost all of the time. The reason for this is because she’s rather timid, and she really doesn’t like making eye contact.

Vincent Goen (VN-GO, age 22): An artistic fellow who recently began his job of adding a fresh layer of paint to the surface of things. Vincent is an imaginative guy who’s very easily distracted. He loves to just let his mind run wild, thinking up an entire world of his own. He often daydreams while at work, and sometimes, he paints a full picture on the walls instead of giving them a new coat of paint.

Hans Maddison (HAN-S, age 27): A masseur who can’t relax to save his life. His idea of a “calming” evening is going to the ship’s gym to work out or wrestling his friends in the tennis court. He doesn’t like his job and wants to be a professional wrestler instead. He also doesn’t get a lot of sleep. Hans is an extremely irascible person, and he often has angry outbursts.

Dee Finley (D-FIB, age 28): A woman whom Sofia knew from her medical classes. She was in the age group below her. Dee is currently pals with Eve, and she’s training to be a paramedic. Dee is ready for anything and is always on her feet, but she has a little too much energy within her. She tends to rush into things. Overall, though, she’s one of the most helpful people Eve and Wally know. There are times when her arm jerks around for reasons she doesn’t know at all. Because of this, she once accidentally smacked herself in the face with a hot tool and burned it.

Lucio Taylor (L-T, age 29): The oldest person in Wally’s new friend group. He works as an electrician. Lucio has a good sense of leadership and helps guide his friends to where they want to go. He spreads positivity and light to those who need some love from him. He would be able to win any kind of argument.

DJ Wiles (my OC D-J, age 21): A DJ and singer who provides music for the ship’s nightclub. He and Wally knew each other when they were 4-5. His full name is Donald Jeremiah Wiles. DJ throws a lot of hard work and passion into everything he does, and he talks a lot. It’s not easy to fool him. He’s also a helpful person, and he loves the idea of Wally and Eve as a couple. After Wally brought the plant back to Eve, they went to have some fun together in the club. At one point, he played slow music for the two to dance to together.

Sparrow Ames (SPR-A, age 23): A member of the sanitation crew who sprays things down. He’s also in charge of turning on the SPR-A units whenever they’re needed. He tends to treat his fellow cleaners Moe and Van very badly. He’s an assertive but self-centered individual. Sparrow is the kind of person who says things like, “I’m not trying to be offensive, but...” He subconsciously believes that Moe and Van slow things down and are bad at their jobs. When the Protasovs returned from Earth, Sparrow wouldn’t let them clean the floors under the guise that he was going to be nice by doing that for them.

Buddy Fuller (BUF-4, age 21): Another cleaner who gives things a nice shine, turns on the BUF-4 units and can’t agree with his coworkers on anything. Despite his name, Buddy is no one’s buddy. He treats his fellow employees like their abilities have to be synonymous with the robots’. That is to say, he puts people down if he thinks they can’t do their job like the robots made for that job can. He’s conceited and overconfident, and he acts like he knows what’s best for everyone. The only thing he and Sparrow agree on is picking on poor Moe and Van.

Wallace Amberg (WALL-A, age 30): A large, muscular waste allocator who works down in the ship’s garbage disposal. He’s full of joy, and he often sings or whistles while he works. He and his friend Walter crack jokes and make each other laugh all the time. They comfort Wally after Otto tases him. He is trying to find a romantic partner for himself.

Wallace “Walter” Adams (WALL-A, age 36): A very good friend of Wallace Amberg’s that works with him. He’s just as optimistic and cheerful, as well as just as buff. To differentiate him from his pal, he calls himself Walter. He and Wallace love to sing together. He’s in a relationship with someone, and he gives Wallace dating tips when he needs them.

Norah Earnshaw (NAN-E, age 29): Sofia’s wife. She works as a nanny. She monitors the infants and preschool-aged children on the ship. She also teaches the latter information like their letters, colors and shapes. She’s as sweet as sugar, and she shows compassion towards everyone. She and Sofia have known each other for over a decade, and they’ve been married for about four years.

Violet Tang (my OC V-T, age 23): Bernie’s friend. She’s a social butterfly and loves animals with all her heart. Bernie often calls her up and chats with her while she’s at work. Since he’s got a new job as a welder, she’s going to be calling him while he’s at work now. She is planning to become a veterinarian, and as of right now, she’s petsitting for other people as her job. She was happy to help Bernie try to find his way back inside the ship after he was accidentally locked out. I named her after the purple tang.

Madeline Pierce (age 48): Heather’s mother and Captain Brian’s ex-wife. They got divorced when Heather was 9. The main reason they did it was because of a lack of commitment between them. Madeline is a very easygoing woman for the most part. She was alright with Heather going to Kenny’s party with Melody, so long as Heather could tell her who was going to be there. Madeline was a great virtual golf player when she was a teenager.

Heather McCrea (age 15): Brian and Madeline’s daughter. She is a thoughtful and brave girl. When she called up her father to find that he was feeling upset about Otto, she comforted him and asked him if he needed help with anything. Heather likes to watch cartoons on her tablet whenever she’s bored.

Melody Lennon (age 15): Heather’s best friend. She and Heather both like to write. She is often in a pleasant mood, and her emotions are usually in tune. She has a brother named Lyric, who went to Kenny’s party with her and Heather. Melody and Heather have known each other since they were both seven, and she was there for Heather when her parents got divorced.

Bernard “Bernie” Ensano (BURN-E, age 24): A young man fresh out of his training. It’s his first day on his new job as a welder, but he didn’t expect to get locked out of the ship. He spent hours looking for a way to get back inside while his family tried to find out where he was and get him back inside. Bernie is mostly able to focus on a task, but similarly to Wally, he can get distracted pretty easily. He likes to listen to classical music and chat with Violet. He’s super eager about his job, and he’s glad he worked so hard for it. Bernie gets worried whenever something bad is happening. When scared enough, he fearfully sits down and hugs his knees to his chest. Bernie also likes to sleep. Whenever he rode the trams with his family, he’d nap until they got where they needed to go.

Kenneth “Kenny” Ensano (age 18): Bernie’s younger brother. He does his best to ensure that everything is orderly and that things don’t go haywire. He’s popular among kids his age. He threw a 700th anniversary party and invited all the kids he knows. When he realized his brother was locked out, he put someone in charge and left his own party to look for him. Like a lot of people on board the ship, he doesn’t have his sights set on any kind of job.

Apoyo Ensano (age 57): Bernie and Kenny’s father. He likes to make sure that people live their best lives, and he is very happy with how well his sons are doing. He is one of the ship’s best engineers, and he often talks with Bernie’s boss. He also gets worried when faced with adversity, and that’s probably why Bernie does that. His name is based on apoy, the Tagalog word for fire.

Yukina Ensano (born Yukina Takamura, age 57): The brothers’ mother and Apoyo’s wife. She works as an electrician, and she’s a pretty adaptable person. Most of the time, she’s able to adjust to a new setting or condition. She does grow very scared for Bernie, but she tries her best to stay positive for him.

Sacha Robineau (SUPPLY-R, age 56): Bernie’s boss, who supplied him with spare spires. He decided he would limit him to three on his first day as a way of keeping him focused. Sacha isn’t one to open up to someone right away. He still doesn’t fully trust Bernie yet, but he does want him to be safe and happy. Sacha has a fully-grown son named Eugene.

I would like to pitch some titles for a sequel to the live action Clifford the Big Red Dog. Clifford: 2 Big 2 Red or Clifford the Big Red Dog: Bigger and Redder. Unfortunately, the movie that was theatrically released in 2021 so it probably won't get a sequel.
