Fated Mates Part 3
Synopsis: you, a vengeful vampire slayer, cross paths with the devious and handsome Astarion. Instead of a stake through the heart, Astarion finds something he thought impossible for vampire spawn. A mate.
Astarion learns more on vampiric mates while you do odd jobs in town. Scraping up enough money your merry gang gets to rest well tonight. Though there’s only one problem, there’s only one bed.
It took another two days before your merry band finally made it to the first town. More hours of Gale’s snores and sleep talking of magical items. Or the way Karlach randomly set fire to something now twice in her sleep. Wyll played some tune non stop on a ukulele you swear just to annoy you. Not to mention the bickering and fighting when they were awake. After getting no sleep you demanded to the group that you would all pitch in and do some odd jobs to afford a stay at a tavern for a night. Anything to give you a chance at relaxation and a soft mattress. Everyone agreed to meet at the town square at the beginning of sundown. The hours before that were up to each entirely.
You first went into the town square in hopes of finding someone to offer you an easy quest for a fee. Perusing the marketplace you find a dressmaker eager to find someone for help.
“My my my! You’re perfect for the job! I was just in need of some help, thank the Gods! I need you to run to this store and grab the fabric on hold for Marteen, then meet me at my shop after the market closes.” He hands you a wrinkled piece of paper with the name of the shop on it. You nod your thanks and head out to said shop.
Astarion immediately abandoned the idea of doing some side quest and instead goes to find the local bookkeeper. The town was quaint in size but he hoped large enough to have some of a selection on what he was looking for. 200 years as a vampire and still his knowledge of vampirism was slim to none. Most of it from passing mouths. Fellow spawn were more than likely in his similar predicament and just as naive to the ways of the vampire world. Anyone higher on the food chain wasn’t keen on educating. Here and there in his travels for prey he heard whispers of things. Knowledge of vampire mates was mostly rumor, common gossip with no real evidence. Astarion had only met one other vampire to have met his mate. At the time the bond seemed weak to him. A cause for a future exploitation. A bother. He never believed himself to be plagued with such nonsense and had not thought to ask more of it. Astarion made his way up the old brick library steps and into the establishment. Years of neglect were evident in every crevice of the place. Spiderwebs littered every corner and shelves of books were caked with years of dust. Astarion tried his best to hide his disgust and made his way to the front desk. An old human woman sat slouched in her chair dozing off. Astarion cleared his throat, waking the woman. She fixed her overly large glasses before squinting up at Astarion. He gives his most award winning smile in return.
“How can I help you stranger?” She croaks.
“I was wondering if you had anything on a special type of creature? A vampire perhaps?” Astarion asks nicely. Her bushy brows furrow in confusion.
“Sorry, things of that nature need special clearance given by the governor. Something about too many impressionable kids trying to bite one another.” She waves her hand away as she finishes talking. She goes to turn away from him as Astarions hand darts across the desk. His thumb and forefinger caress the old woman’s chin as he gently turns her head back to him. Astarion leans close, breath mingling with the librarians. With his best bedroom eyes Astarion pleads once again.
“Please dear? I swear I shan’t be more than a moment.” The woman’s face lights up beet red as she flusters under his touch.
“I mean- I- well I mean- if if if you really won’t be more than a second than I guess it’s okay.” She stutters out.
“Perfect. Just point me in the direction, love.” Astarion purrs. The woman scuffles from behind her desk and grabs a set of keys from her pocket. Astarion follows as she leads him further into the library towards an old vault door. With a turn of a key she guides him to the shelving labeled V.
“Please don’t be long, my boss will be around any moment!” She giggles behind her wrinkled hand. Her blush still evident as she walks away. Astarions face drops back to a resting neutral once she’s out of sight and he makes his way through the novels. There are only a few books pertaining to vampires. His fingers slide over titles of “How to Properly Slay a Vampire” and “Vampire Bites for Medical Use”. None contain anything about mates. A growl of frustration leaves him before he’s manically ripping through books across the shelves. Books and scrolls fly through the air before Astarions rage stops in its tracks. Mid throw Astarion reads the title of the small book in his hand. “Mates in Five Different Species: Fate Driven Partnership”. Astarion just about rips the book open before he hears the patter of the woman’s footsteps coming closer. He rushes out the door and slams it behind him. The woman jumps at his sudden movements just outside the chambers.
“You have been so lovely, thank you. I must go, good day!” Astarion shouts over his shoulder before dashing outside. The woman’s shriek at his mess is the last he hears as he makes for the door and rounds the corner. Finding a secluded alleyway, Astarion makes himself comfortable on top of a wooden crate and cracks open the book.
Vampiric Mates:
Vampire mating is a rarity within the species. Only about an average of 31% of vampires have mates. Of that 31% only 3% of their mates were non-vampire in manner. Courtship of mates in vampires comes within three stages: sight, taste, consummation. The beginnings of the mating correspond with the first mutual stare between the partners. Mating is then felt in its entirety with a touch of either lips or genitalia. Finally, the mate bond is accepted for eternity with consummation of the partnership.
Astarions eyebrows shoot up as he reads. He had already completed two damned steps without even realizing.
Though the “feeling” of a mate may differ slightly from vampire to vampire, similarities are shown throughout each recorded mating. Feelings of a something similar to a cord “tightening” is usually the most common sign. Feelings of falling, fainting or loss of emotions momentarily have also been recorded. It is believed to be innate to each vampire to recognize a mate once seen.
Astarion thinks back to the shared bargain kiss you had made a few nights earlier. The feeling of a band wrapping and tightening in his core. The way he felt his stomach drop. He had thought himself nauseous from not drinking enough but in reality he knew he was denying it. Denying the feeling he felt with that first look. Something so ingrained biologically he couldn’t shoo it away. He flips to the section labeled “Vampire Mates: Other Species Mate”.
Mates of a vampire not already afflicted with vampirism upon meeting may be at a disadvantage. Though similar feelings may be present they will not be as strong as they are for the vampire mate. The mate also may not feel the same feelings of possessiveness and aching as the vampire mate will. Non vampire mates may not inherently realize what has happened without further education.
Astarion reads the last sentence several times over. You didn’t even know. He could continue on this little adventure and you would never be the wiser of what was unfolding between the two of you. A large part of Astarion was glad, gleeful even, to not have to worry about this further. But a small, quiet and forgotten part of his brain felt remorse at the thought. Astarion was about to continue to read through the entire section before he noticed the beginnings of the sunset. Realizing he would be meeting back with your party shortly, Astarion leaps from his seat on the crate and moves through the alleyways. He knows if he shows up empty handed you won’t let him hear the end of it. He knows your still deciding on whether or not you want to plant your stake right into his heart anyhow. Moving through side streets and back alleys Astarion moves with grace between drunks and gamblers. Swift and nimble, his hands dip into their pockets and empty them of any useful change. With a bit of money to his name, Astarion takes a main road back to the square. Though an image to his right stops him in his tracks, you.
A bit earlier -
Fabrics in hand, you huff down the street to Marteens shop. The fabric store was on the very outskirts of town. Nothing more than an old witch with a spindle, calling it a shop was a bit excessive. Though the lady was kind enough, you spent far too much time to get there as well as listen to the old woman gab as she got your order together. You finally step up to Marteen’s Dress Shop and softly knock on the door. Large floor to ceiling windows show the interior from the front. Mannequins dressed in beautiful floor length gowns adorn the left and right side. A small podium sits in the middle awaiting a blushing bride to try on her future gown. Marteen opens the door and beams at you.
“Please come in, come in!” He waves you in. He helps unload the several bits of fabric from your grasp. Luxurious rolls of dark blood red fabric, black lace, and golden trimmings leave your hands. You help bring everything else into the shop. Marteen unloads the rolls onto a long table next to the front podium. You stand next to him admiring the cloths.
“It really is beautiful.” You whisper, more to the fabrics than the man. He smiles at you as he grabs a mostly made dress from his back room. The same fabric is made into a long gown in his arms. A tight black bodice corsets the top as gold accents the sides. Crimson fabric layers on top of eachother at the bottom as it bellows out into a sweep gown.
“Before you go, could I ask you one more job? I’ll throw in a few extra coin!” Marteen asks.
“Sure, what can I get you next?” You ask.
“This dress, it’s for my daughter. It’s nearly complete save the sleeves and a bit of patching in the back. You look about her size, mind being my model? I’d ask her, but it’s a bit of a surprise.” You really hadn’t expected that. It had been a very very long time since you worn something so exquisite. Back before your parents had been murdered. Back when your father threw elegant balls for nothing more than to fill the manor with good company and better wine. Back before life became what it is. You shake the thought before they take hold.
“Sure why not.” You shrug.
Cinched into the velvet fabric feels like a dream against your skin. Marteen expertly sewed beautiful bell bottom sleeves with black lace endings onto each arm. Gold is hemmed in the sides to accentuate your curves. Flowing black ribbon ties in the bodice tightly. Marteen smiles broadly, proud of himself. You do a small twirl at his command and watch the fabric flow with your movements. You can’t help the giggle that takes over you as you sway.
“It’s perfect! Absolutely perfect!” Marteen glows.
“It is! It’s absolutely perfe-“ your words die half way through your throat when through the front glass you see a gawking Astarion. Shame and anger sweep over your momentary glee. You clench your hands and jaw as you stare him down. A smug look takes over his face as he watches you. Marteen comes and looks over your shoulder.
“Oh, is that your betrothed?” He asks innocently. You can’t help the sarcastic laugh that leaves your lips.
“As if! Never in a million lifetimes.” You reply coldly, eyes narrowing. Marteen gives you a puzzled look.
“By the way he looks at you in that dress, I would have thought otherwise.” Marteen tosses over his shoulder.
—
Astarion had good intentions, brilliant and easy intentions. Seduce you, con you, but never fall for you. To overcome the illness of being mated. He was determined, arrogant even in his belief that this mating was nothing more than a silly joke from the universe. He could get over a few fleeting feelings, he had endured much worse in centuries of slavery and solitude. But those resolutions all but melt away at the sight of you. He watches you twirl in a dress fit for a vampiric queen. Blood red accentuating your body, long fabric flowing with your movements. An easy smile gracing your lips. That familiar coil in his chest begged his attention once again. An ache fills his long canines to sink into the soft nape of your neck. All he could do was stare at your form, the way your lips looked so mesmerizing in that easy smile. An animalistic urge shook him with the thought that that smile should be for him, not some gown maker. The thought vanished as quickly as it comes as you find his stare and match it with a look that could kill. Gods, this was going to be harder than he thought.
-
Redressed, you collect your payment and meet Astarion out in the front of the shop. He gives you a fake saddened look.
“Here I was out doing honest work and you’re trying on gowns. Really, (y/n) you outta be ashamed.” He tuts at you. You wag your finger in his face.
“I was doing work blood sucker! Besides, there isn’t a way in the 9 realms of hell you did any honest work.” You accuse him. At your words Astarion pulls the money he had collected from his pocket. Your finger stops mid wag as you look at the coins in his hand.
“Now now now, nothing to say little killer? What will the others think when I tell them?” Astarion muses. He starts to make his way towards the center of town. It takes you a moment to catch up with him.
“You are not to tell them anything! Do you hear me, or so help me-“ you threaten.
“Or what, drive a stake through my heart? Last time you tried that you ended up kissing me. Really you need to learn better threats.” Astarion teases. You swear you see red. You just about open your mouth before Astarions face comes smack dab in front of yours.
“Besides dear, we both know you need me more than you want to kill me.” He whispers to you. You stare him down fighting the urge to hit him with all your strength. All it does is make his cocky smile grow bigger. An awkward throat clearing brings the two of you apart as Gale stands in front of you.
“Hmm well if you’re all done with your lover's quarrel, we were going to put our money together.” You want to argue that a lovers quarrel was very very far from the truth but you instead take role. Counting the money together you think you have enough for all of you to grab a bunk for the night. You had spotted an inn earlier and lead the group towards it.
-
The inn was one of the larger buildings in the area. It hosted a tavern on its first floor, home to beer drinking and dinner. The next two stories were dedicated to rentals. Thankfully, there was just enough space for two to a room with a small bed for each. Everyone argued who was going to bunk with you. Given your earlier appearances everyone had already voted you and Astarion to a room. You just about lost your head in front of the kind old inn woman.
“Come on, the lovers can share a romantic evening together!” Karlach teased.
“There is no lovers and there will be no romance!” You seethe.
“Honestly, I mean Gods knows I can do better.” Astarion chimes in.
“Now what is that suppose to mean-“ you turn your attention to the white haired Vampire. He raises his hands in mock defense.
“Aw the lovers are fighting again.” Shadowheart replies. The old woman behind the desk gives a small chuckle.
“Oh deary, I completely understand. You two need a special room. Here darling, on the house. Last door on the right.” The woman gives a set of keys over to you. You thank her for her understanding and set off in the direction she gave you. Astarion is on your heels as you ascend to the rental rooms on the third floor. The rest get together with their designated partner for the night and set off to their rooms for the night. You set the key to the lock and turn it.
“I hope you know I’ll be getting the largest bed, beauty sleep needed and all.” Astarion quips. You don’t have the function to respond as you peer into the room. The room is massive. There’s a beautiful fainting couch overlooking large windows peering into the valley below. Velvet curtains hang in the windows. A fire roars off to the left corner in a stone fireplace. A plush bear rug lines the middle of the space. And right there, dead center, is only one large king bed.

secret kisses ao3 | ff.net ship: ranma/akane words: 1,625 Ranma and Akane would steal kisses at every chance they got, secretly behind closed doors...usually. They hadn’t known how it began happening, but once it started it was hard to stop.
Akane had just reached the bathroom’s door when a gentle squeeze at her wrist pulled her away too easily. She yelped at the sudden movement, her body twirling to land perfectly onto Ranma’s chest, as her eyes widen when she felt his soft mouth press itself against hers. She couldn’t help but allow her lips to widen into a dopey grin, feeling the way his hands snaked themselves against the small of her back to pull her in further.
The young woman indulged effortlessly, relishing at the way he continued to pepper a number of kisses, her brain losing its trail of thought. Even after he pulled away, taking her a moment to readjust her mind and shake herself awake, remembering where they were. Still, his arms continued to stay hooked around her body, his face centimeters from hers as he whispered, “Morning, tomboy.”
She huffed a chuckle, nervously looking behind her as she smiled bashfully, warning, “We’re gonna get caught, idiot.”
He shrugged his shoulders, seemingly not caring of such consequences, his rather bold smirk tangling her insides. He was so handsome, his chiseled jaw now rubbing itself against her cheek before kissing her temple, and she could feel her feeble stance betray her completely as her knees wobbled at her nervousness.
It had been a few months of this taking place; Ranma and Akane would steal kisses at every chance they got, secretly behind closed doors...usually. They hadn’t known how it began happening, but once it started it was hard to stop. Ranma usually had the upper hand, as it was easier for him to sneak up on the shorter woman, planting one quickly and walking away just as fast before she could say anything.
Although that morning, he lingered just a tad longer, wistful to her essence. And like always, he released his hold and began walking away, leaving her completely abashed before making her way into the bathroom for her morning shower.
That afternoon, the duo had found themselves home alone, as their parents were having dinner with family friends and the eldest Tendo sisters had gone to the market, Nabiki only tagging along because the marketplace was nearby a clothing store promoting a store wide clearance, and she wanted to stroll the aisles in case something caught her eye.
Akane usually tagged along, shopping being one of her favorite pastimes, but she needed to study for finals – considering they were in their last year of high school. She had brought her studying materials to the family room in hopes that her fiancé would want to tackle the books with her; of course, he didn’t. At first, Ranma got lost in a book, not paying any mind to Akane as she silently read her textbook and scribbled mindlessly on her journal.
It wasn’t until he stepped away, going and coming back from the kitchen with some snacks Kasumi had premade before heading out after knowing Akane would be studying. He held a plate of diced fruit, munching on an apple slice as he noticed Akane’s concentrated face. She hovered over the kotatsu table, her eyebrows furrowed as she mindlessly chewed on her lower lip, and he could feel his entire body heat up.
Without much thought, Ranma made his way towards her and set the plate on the table, offering her some. She glanced quickly at it and shook her head, murmuring, “No, thanks, Ranma,” under her breath as she continued to study. He grumbled, his face souring before breathing in deeply.
“Really got your nose in that book, huh?” He muttered quietly, not thinking she’d actually hear him, or stop her study to look over at him.
“This is what studying looks like,” she replied quite sarcastically, offering him a quizzical look as to where his attitude had come from. Did it bother him that she was studying in the family room?
He took a seat next to her, rather closely she noticed, propping himself with his arms, leaning back as he looked at her. His light eyes seemed to bounce about her face before landing on her plumped lips, finding himself leaning forward to kiss her. He pulled away after a moment, his smile widening as he said, “And you look real cute doing that.”
Akane could feel her entire face change color, her heart racing at an absurd speed, having to look away otherwise she’d melt into a puddle right there and then. “G-geez, Ran-Ranma,” Akane stuttered, looking back at the table in a sense of going back to her studies, but she knew that boat had sailed. Not when Ranma decided that he wanted to kiss her instead.
“What?” He scoffed, leaning towards her with a suspicious stare, “you don’t wanna’ kiss me no more?”
“I- that’s not what- uh,” and then he kissed her again, his hand having reached for her head as he tangled his fingers into her short strands of dark hair to pull her forward. She sighed merrily into his mouth, her large eyes easily fluttering themselves shut, shivers running through her entire body at the way Ranma’s lips caressed hers.
His kiss was always soft and tender, warm with the rest of his skin. And he smelled so good, like soap and sandalwood. Yeah, she was done studying for the night.
Ranma’s eyes widen as a new parfait glass was placed in front of her, her lips widen in pure bliss, unable to hide how much she enjoyed the dessert. She sat next to her fiancée, quickly digging into a new spoonful, glancing over to catch the now-taller woman watched her with an amused expression.
“What?” Ranma asked, swallowing and finding himself get embarrassed at the way Akane’s soft smile never faltered, shaking her head as an answer.
“Nothing,” she replied quietly, “you just seem to be enjoying your sweets.”
Ranma was now blushing, not knowing exactly why. Still, she shrugged her shoulders, “What can I say? They serve a mean parfait here, I tell ya’.”
“Yeah, I can tell. This is your third serving,” she chuckled endearingly, noticing the way her blemished cheeks only managed to deepen their shade of red. “You look cute eating your dessert,” Akane confessed, now resting her chin against her propped hands, her cheeks round at the way her smile lifted them high.
She didn’t know what to say to that.
Not expecting much, Ranma’s eyes widen when she felt Akane lean forward and softly press a chaste kiss on her lips. It lasted a moment before she pulled away, the tip of her tongue licking her lower lip as she said, “That strawberry flavor is strong.” And she couldn’t help herself but laughed a tad louder as Ranma’s crimson face almost camouflaged with her red, oversized mandarin top. Now she knew why he had so much fun catching her off guard.
“Ak-Akane,” she whispered harshly, looking around seemingly paranoid, “we’re in public.”
“Ranma,” Akane scoffed softly, “Shampoo and Ukyo hardly ever come to this ice cream shop,” she assured her with a wider grin. “I think it’s okay if we kiss a little.”
Of course, they both knew that wasn’t what she meant by her statement. Still, Akane kissed her again, just as soft and just as long.
Akane had walked in to see Ranma self-train with some katas, dressed in his own gi, finding that they were matching. She smiled softly at him, shamelessly walking over to him and taking a seat in front of him. She pulled her knees up to her chest and wrapped her arms around them, admiring the way his skill was easily reflected in his performance.
He stopped soon after, noticing she had sat and was watching him, admiring him. His ego was already past the roof, he couldn’t help but smirk knowingly at her, “Watching ain’t gonna help ya’ get as good as me.”
“If you sparred with me once in a while, maybe I'd get better,” she scoffed, rolling her eyes.
He walked over to her, crouching right in front of her, “Whaddya’ mean,” he retaliated, “I do spar with ya’.”
“Nuh-uh,” she accused, “all you do is avoid my hits.”
“I ain’t wanna hurt you, is all.”
“I’m going to start avoiding all your kisses, so you can see what it feels like.”
He grinned mischievously, “You can try.” His arms went to wrap themselves around her body, pulling her towards him, ready to plant one when she turned her head, chuckling under her breath.
“Not until you spar with me,” she said.
He was now pecking her entire face, her sounds of laughter and mirth loud and beautiful, and pleasing to his ears. “But you want to kiss me,” he accused, finding themselves with Ranma atop of her through all the wiggling and wobbling.
She was breathing heavily, looking up at him, his dangling braid brushing her cheek. “Not anymore.”
“Liar.”
Akane shook her head, her teasing smile never leaving her face, “I am not.”
Ranma quickly leaned down and kissed her, pulling away fast, “You like my kisses.”
“Nope.”
He kissed her again, “See?”
She wrinkled her nose, “No, that’s not doing it for me, I’m afraid.”
“What about...” And this time, Ranma’s mouth spread fuller, taking in Akane’s lips completely, his shut eyes not letting him catch the way her wide eyes twitch at how good it felt having him kiss her like that. His kiss was rough, full of passion each time he pulled away and angled his head to kiss her again and again. The pit of her stomach churned, and she shivered at the intensity of it all.
After a long moment, Ranma pulled away, their heaving chest pressed against each other's as he said, “I told ya’.”

How to Build a Fabric Stash without Breaking the Bank
Fabric can be expensive but it doesn’t have to be. If you are not stuck on Name Brands or Specialty Fabric Store Exclusives here are some ways to build your fabric stash without costing an arm and a leg. I have made many beautiful quilts using various fabrics from various supplies. And I believe that the quality is not just in the fabric you use but also in your stitch work and seams sizes. If your seams are less than a ¼” they will not hold (personally I prefer to use a ½” seam allowance). If you are not securing your thread ends, your stitch work is going to come undone. So be sure to watch these things too.
Look for fabric at your local Thrift Store (Goodwill, Value Village, etc.)
I have found some wonderful fabrics in various sizes, notions, storage items and more at my local Thrift Stores. I have even found unfinished quilt tops that I have brought home and added a backing to then quilted. Remember that almost any size fabric remnant can be added to other remnants to make some wonderful scrappy quilts so save your own remnants after making a quilt, you may be able to use it later in another quilt.
Look for local Fabric Sales held by Quilting Guilds in Your Area.
We have 2 near me every summer. One charges $2 per pound for any fabric. The second one charges $2 per yard for any fabric. Both also sell batting, notions, books, machines, tools, and more.
Look for fabric on Facebook Marketplace, Nextdoor and other sites.
I sell extra fabric on Marketplace and Nextdoor. I have also found several ladies near me selling fabric that I have purchased. And some I have purchased with shipping to me.
Look for older 100% Cotton Sheets at your local Thrift Stores.
Back in the 1800’s and early 1900’s, Quilts were not show pieces. They were real functional blankets that were made from any and all fabrics they could get, usually used clothing. I think there is no reason why we cannot still do that instead of buying expensive fabrics. I have often used clothing, sheets, curtains, and other linens to make some wonderful, usable quilts. And there are some wonderful patterns you can use for quilts in bedsheets from the 1980’s and 1990’s. Note: I always wash anything from a Thrift Store before I use it.
Watch for Fabric Sales and Coupons for Joanns, Hobby Lobby and other Fabric & Craft Stores.
I know some quilters believe that the fabric from Joanns & Hobby Lobby is poor quality but I have not found any bad fabric from these stores. We do not have a “Quilting” store close to me and because I’m handicapped, I will not drive an hour or more just to buy expensive fabric. If I did that, I wouldn’t be able to afford to quilt. I will also buy fabric from Walmart but I am more careful with my selection there as most fabric at Walmart is good but I have had one or two pieces that I felt were poorer quality.
Watch for Fabric Sales and Coupons for your Local Quilt Shop.
Quilt shops will also have occasional sales and/or coupons so if you prefer to shop at these locations take notice of when they have sales. Also ask if they ever give discounts to seniors or military.
Use New or Older Clothing.
I have made a lot of beautiful Memorial Quilts from a loved one’s clothing and T-Shirt quilts. I will use jeans, work shirts, uniforms, flannel, cotton, polyester and even some knits. These can be a little trickier to work with because they are often stretchy fabrics but they will add a wonderful texture and visual variance to your quilts. I recently found a pair of cotton pants with Mickey Mouse on them. I fell in love with them because they were so colorful, and I love bold colors. I found several other cotton fabrics that matched the colors in the Mickey pants and made a bold colorful quilt!
Rethink Your Backing Fabric
No one ever said your quilt backing had to be all New Cotton. You can use Fleece, Flannel or Bed Sheets as well. On many occasions I have found some wonderful fleece blankets on clearance and used these for my quilt backing. Joanns right now has a great clearance sale on Flannel fabric. The best part about using some of these is that you can get then in a wider width so you may be able to make your backing in all one piece instead of 2 or more like when using regular cotton (unless you want your backing to be in various colors/patterns). You can also use new or older cotton bed sheets for a quilt backing. Again, you can make your quilt backing in one solid piece with a sheet!
Check the Clearance Section for Your Favorite On-Line Stores
I have several on-lines stores that I love to shop from (e-Quilter, Missouri Star, etc.) but sometimes they can be expensive so I always check the clearance section of these stores. There are times I will find some beautiful fabrics on clearance so will purchase it then look for matching piece everywhere else so I can get the best deals. Also check for on-line sales from Joanns, Hobby Lobby and other on-lines stores that sell fabric and/or sheets.
Check Out Your Local Garage, Moving and Estate Sales
I have found some of the best deals at moving and estate sales because often the seller is willing to bargain with you. I once found an estate sale where a family was selling off all their mother’s quilting and sewing items because she had passed away and none of then sewed. There was more fabric and notions than I would have used in a year so I found lots of thread and items I purchased at a great price.
Note on Batting
I know that many quilters believe that the only batting you should use is expensive cotton batting. I disagree. There are many forms of batting. Cotton/Poly blends, Polyester, and Fleece. I love cotton batting but cotton will break down quicker than polyester and I want my quilts to last a lifetime so for most of my quilts I actually use Polyester more often than not. I have taken the backing off many older quilts to do repair work and the cotton batting inside was all balled up and a real mess.
Now when I am doing the Quilt-as-you-Go method I use a Fleece batting. The fleece can be cut into smaller pieces, fabric added to the top and then sewn back together to make wonderful quilts. And the batting doesn’t get stuck in my machine.
Shop Around for your batting to find the best deals. Sometimes Joanns has a sale on batting but the best price I have found so far has been Walmart on-line. I can buy a 96” x 9 yard Bolt of Poly Batting for just $30 on Walmart on-line. This bolt will make 4+ quilts depending on the size of the quilt and I will have lots of left overs for smaller projects like pillows, etc. For me the best part is that because it’s 96” wide, I don’t have to piece together my batting before I can sandwich my quilt!

Where does one buy furniture in the style you have in your rat gun post? What kind of store? I love you're aesthetic and want to incorporate it into my own home if possible.
Thrift...store? Antique store? estate sale. Curb pile of garbage. facebook marketplace. craigslist. family member who is moving. friend of a friend who has a grandma who died and doesn't know what to do with all of her weird stuff. pile of unrelated items you had in your house that your brain just figured out how to fit together into a new shape. Hardware store clearance aisle.
heap of lumber and many tools and too many splinters and time.

At Wendy's recently I heard a guy ask for his senior discount. The girl at the register apologized and charged him less. When I asked the man what the discount was, he told me that seniors over age 55 ...get 10% off everything on the menu, every day. (But you need to ASK for your discount.)

I wanted to do something for Rogue/Gambit week, but all I have is this unfinished *gambit lives* WIP. So here goes.
When the rest of the team finally gets clearance to touch down in Genosha, Rogue is still in her tattered dress, wearing Gambit’s coat, muscling through rubble. They hold her and she barely flinches, as if it’s happening to someone else.
It’s her third day without eating or sleeping—just searching. Clawing.
The last place anyone saw Gambit was at the bar.
Magneto and Madelyne succumbed to the green flash.
The Godzilla sentinel was defeated by one of the dancers in the marketplace, a humble Omega named Exodus.
Mutant art, Rogue considers.
They sift through the fledgling nation’s ashes with the other helpers.
Survivors are found, but not enough.
They freeze in their tracks when a young girl and her winged mother ask the searchers if they’ve seen “the card trick man.”
A shrill gasp. Rogue bolts to her level, holding her shoulders as gently as she can. “When did you see him, sweet thing?”
“At the Xavier. He saved me and my mom. He said ‘be brave, Cher’ and I said ‘I’m not Cher but I know her songs.’”
A blip of a smile breaks through on her lips for the first time in days. “We’re gonna find him, babygirl, I promise.”
This promise carries her until she finds a charred Queen of hearts in the wreckage of the Xavier Regency’s courtyard.
Then she goes feral in her search.
Every now and then she calls out his name. Sometimes it’s barely audible, sometimes she screeches like a tea kettle.
It still was possible he’d been vaporized to a green mist after saving the girl, but her vague awareness of this means little.
If she never accepts it, maybe this effort will never shift from rescue to recovery mode.
Storm moves her knotted hair away from her face. “Rogue, love—you have to stop and rest. Let us take over.” Storm knows this won’t be easy. She remembers Hank’s account of Rogue peeling open the Asteroid escape shuttle like a can of sardines to find Gambit at just the sheer possibility of him being hurt.
Rogue’s shakes her head in a barely visible twitch and clutches the lapels of the coat. “Rogue always comes to Gambit’s rescue,” she quotes, choking on tears. “I know he’s out here. I feel him.”
“As do I. But he needs you to come to your own rescue first.”
Rogue shakes her head with a trembling sniff. “I have to tell him the truth. I don’t care what happens to me if I can’t.”
“We do. We love you. Here.” She hands her a canteen and Rogue submits to it with dribbling gulps. “There. For Remy, right?”
“For Remy.”
The afternoon shadows get longer and Rogue relents to sleeping against Kurt’s blanketed shoulder for a little while, her face streaked with dried tears.
Jubilee accosts them at full speed, her boots kicking up dust. “The telepaths, they found someone alive!”
Rogue’s voice is like static, but audible. “Oh my lord, please.” They rush after the clusters of people standing around the site.
“It’s a low level empath,” Jean says. “Mind is very hard to breach—”
“If that ain’t Gumbo, I’ll eat dirt,” Logan says.
Rogue holds her breath. Jean raises the figure from the wreckage, his white suit battered but intact, his eyes closed as if asleep, his body glowing pink as if charged.
Rogue squeals through her tears with a hand over her mouth, feeling like this is all a fever dream. “He’s—”
”Fascinating,” Hank says. “A latent mutation triggered by duress. A biokinetic shield that protected him from the falling building–”
He doesn’t get to finish as Rogue plows through and bridal carries Remy in her trenchcoated arms, sobbing. He’s breathing, slowly but surely, like he’s suspended in time. “I knew it. Goddamn you, sugar. This is your best trick yet.”
The rest of the team indulges in their own delighted tears. Storm breaks out with a triumphant laugh.
Jubilee flips her glasses over her eyes from the brightness. “How do we wake him up out of the glowy shieldy chrysalis thing?”
Wolverine groans at Rogue, who looks like she’s going to zip herself inside the chrysalis thing. “Uhhgh. Let me guess, with the power of love?”
Morph rolls his white eyes. “We can discuss your affinity for Celine Dion later, Canuck.”
“We have to proceed carefully,” Beast says. “We don’t know the extent of his injuries before the shield kicked in.”
A shield, Rogue muses. The aura around him beckons her, like a certain electromagnetic energy once did.
Her glove drops to the ground.
She follows her sudden instinct and slowly grasps Gambit’s face, spiking up not a single vein, absorbing nothing. Everyone gasps.
“Stars and garters,” Hank says. “Gambit has held the link to nullifying your touch all along.”
“Cmon, Sleepin’ Beauty. Make a gal feel welcome,” she trembles, and kisses his lips tentatively, then with all the determination on this broken island.
And he blinks awake, still glowing.
“…gambit not even gonna question this.”
She pulls him in close by his violet scarf. “Makes two of us. I love you, you damn fool,” she shivers through her tears, kissing him desperately.
And there it is, light as a flutter of cards. Nothing close to a burden.
“Something tells me our friend is never turning that shield off,” Beast says.

I just opened my Redbubble and Society6 accounts (see this post for the designs I put up), so I wanted to do a post with a little information about my experience with the two different platforms. Let me start by saying this isn’t really researched, it’s entirely anecdotal and just meant to be a little context for anyone else thinking of picking this up.
First, I made these for myself, I’m not really expecting them to go anywhere, and in fact I want to say that I ask you don’t get one of these if it’s just to support me (since I’ve had people ask), if for no other reason than because there might be a Much better way to do that soon (note: soon is extremely relative and optimistic, I just wanted to put that disclaimer out there). That said, if you like the designs, that’s really cool and I hope you enjoy them!
As far as Redbubble (RB) versus Society6 (S6), S6 is more aimed at “artists” (original, including stuff like photography), and RB is more aimed at fandom, so there’s a pretty big difference in content between both the sites but they’re both print-on-demand (POD) marketplaces where artists can upload their designs and anyone can get them on any merch they enable the design for.
As for quality: in my experience, S6’s base products (case base, shirt base, etc) are higher quality while Redbubble’s printing and resolution are higher quality, so it depends which is more important for you. I’ve mostly gotten clothes and stickers off S6 in past and cases off RB, so for this launch I ordered one of my own cases from S6 (I did say I made them for me) so I could directly compare them, which led to my judgment above. I got snap cases for the same model of phone from both sites.
RB: I’ve ordered two cases from Redbubble and one of them was great while the other (six~ months ago) was partially defective. The first one didn’t need buttons and worked just fine. The second did and one of the buttons was poorly cut out and constantly held the volume down. I had to take the case off (which was extremely difficult) and then snap the volume buttons off (both to make it even) and use a small nail file to widen the button hole. I could have just gotten the one in a thousand that happens to be defective, but I can’t not mention it when I’m directing people there. Magnet charging still works well in a Redbubble case but I wouldn’t trust a magnetic wallet or popsocket attachment to stay on. The camera also has so little protection I felt like I had to go out and buy a protector just for that (which luckily fit around it within the case). The prints for the Redbubble cases seemed to be good representations of the designs, but as they were both other people’s designs and I never saw the original resolution, I can’t for sure say how much was preserved.
S6: The S6 case is made of a little thicker/sturdier plastic, but covers pretty much all of the same areas as the RB case did for the same phone (which is to say, I’m still glad I have a camera protector). The S6 case doesn’t try to have buttons, which is less convenient than a case with working buttons on this model of phone, but the button cutouts are wide with plenty of clearance to avoid defects. However, I’ll be honest and say I’m not happy with the print quality. It’s pretty fuzzy. I know their laptop stickers are good, as are their shirts, so I think it’s just a phone case or size condensation thing (which is interesting considering they REQUIRE you to upload very large images). Do with that knowledge what you will. Magnet charging works just as well as RB, and again I would say not to rely on other attachments.
Oh also if you’re curious, from the artist side I think the cut from both sites is about breakeven. RB gives 20% but then takes a fee of about half of it unless they deem you Special, and S6 is just a flat 10% (if there are more fees, I haven’t found them, but I also just launched lmao). So yeah just use whichever site you prefer. I’ve always preferred Society6 in theory but I think I’ll go to Redbubble for cases now. I honestly might order a second colorway off Redbubble in the “tough” case sometime to compare them and if I do I’ll update and maybe take a photo (I don’t like taking photos). I was thinking of taking a photo of S6 print but then I put it on my phone (you know, my camera) and. it is very hard to get off (I am extremely weak) so I’m not struggling with it until I’m actually replacing it.

Christmas Date 2023 Continuation (from here)
An interaction between @ruki-mukami-dl & @yuriko-mukami
Yuriko lifted her gaze as Ruki wiped her tears, her cheeks heating up slightly even in the cold weather. It was a bit embarrassing how easily she got all teared up these days, but she simply couldn’t help it.
“Umh… yes, it is…” Yuriko blinked. She wrapped her arms around Ruki’s waist, enjoying the closeness they shared. “Oh… I will love it here for sure. I can’t wait to see everything.”
Entwining their fingers, Yuriko followed Ruki’s lead to the town. She had never visited a Christmas market before, but, of course, she knew how markets worked. There would be stalls, right? People would sell stuff.
But before they reached the marketplace, Yuriko allowed her gaze to wander. The buildings made her think about the Middle Ages in Europe. She didn’t know many facts about those times but she had read several books that happened in that part of the history. Surely, some things were as said in those. The streets were narrow and the cobblestones a bit bumpy under her feet. Some shops even had signs hanging above their doors and those swayed in the light wind that swooshed between the houses. The air brought many different aromas into Yuriko’s sensitive nose, making her think about baked goodies and spices but also wax candles, candies, and hot drinks.
Each step carried them closer to the clearance. People around them seemed to head toward the same place with beaming faces and chatting with each other. Yuriko noticed that she couldn’t understand a word of what was said. While that was to be expected, it still caught her off guard. For her whole life, she had never traveled abroad, so she had only heard tourists and TV people talking in different languages. But now, she couldn’t hear a single word being said in her native language.
Nevertheless, Yuriko’s steps were light. She would have dashed faster but Ruki’s warning rang in her head. She should remember that she wasn’t only responsible for herself now, but also for another life that depended on her completely. So, she kept roaming through the streets and breathed in the atmosphere surrounding them.
As they stepped into the Christmas market, Yuriko gasped, covering her mouth with her free hand. The lights were already glimmering, and she could only imagine how wonderful they would look later when the darkness settled. Right now, Yuriko stared and tried to see everything at the same time. The lights, the tree, and all the boots full of food, drinks, sweets, and handicrafts to buy.
Hearing Ruki, Yuriko peeked at him. “It’s the same as before?” When had been the last time Ruki had been here? He rarely talked about his past, and Yuriko didn’t want to pry, for she knew some things were too painful to talk about.
“Oh! I love it! I can’t wait to check every booth there is!” Yuriko giggled, pulling Ruki’s arm slightly. She leaped toward the first stall, glancing around. “Such cute mittens! And hats and scarves too! Everything looks so exotic and interesting! Did someone really make all these by hand? That’s so amazing!”
Yuriko took her time to check the booth after booth together with Ruki, taking in the view. This was really like stepping into a book. She leaned in, looking at bee wax candles more closely, and suddenly, her stomach let out a tiny grumble, making her cheeks flare up. She peeked around, hoping no one had heard the embarrassing sound.

Clandestine Visits
Masterlist
Summary: "Dark lines, not scattered at all. You would not take many lovers in this life. No heartbreaks for you." In moments of busy schedules, Cinder and Kai take out time to visit the marketplace. Their evening takes a turn when they meet a mystic lady, some felicities are better kept uncovered. Ship: Kaider Words: 2.9k
Cinder's Perspective:
She was huddled on the lush bed, her mind lost in thought as she gazed at the dark blue ceiling over her. This small moment of relaxation had not been taken for granted as she had fewer of these in recent months.
Cinder had taken the immaculate opportunity to throw out her extravagant heels as soon as she was in the safety of closed doors. She had been going on parading herself, politely shaking hands, smiling till her cheeks hurt and doing more of the same on the next day for the last 2 months. Going from one union to another- meeting their leaders, signing treaties, going to meet Lunars that had come through, working in and out of offices for her nation.
Without having to say, Cinder had been exhausted.
Now she seemed to have found herself in The Commonwealth, next to someone she was rather fond of. Her work didn't make her inside quench as much as the sight of Kai did. Distance and time do stuff to you that cannot be put into words.
There was a knock at the door, three taps before it was opened. She didn't bother to wake up, already guessing who had disturbed her.
"I was thinking," she said, feeling the bed dip in beside her.
"Yes," he muttered, staring at her.
"I want to go out."
"The marketplace?" She hums in confirmation.
"Well you can go anytime you want to, I can make clearance for you if you desire."
"I know. I'm not sure if I want to see how much life has changed in the last year."
"It's changed quite some, true. Even your shop has got some interesting modifications," he mentioned.
Now that got her curious as she rolled closer to him, "What do you mean?"
"Maybe you should see it for yourself," he said, cushioning his head at the nape of her neck.
"You know I can't just vanish anymore."
"But I can," he said, holding back a smile.
"You want to go undercover?"
"Don't make it sound so mysterious. Just look around for some time and come back. No one usually notices," he explained.
"How often do you do this, Emperor Kaito?" she asked in astonishment.
"Often enough that Torin knows about it," he explained rather casually.
"And he doesn't seem to get a seizure out of your safety?" She asked, feeling incredulous, Mateo, her personal secretary would kill her if she pulled a stunt like that.
"I have help minutes away if things go wry. Besides, the marketplace is a shabby place for the Emperor's kidnapping."
"No one gets kidnapped in a fancy place," she said with little wit.
"That's beside the point, would you be coming along?"
"I would be a fool to deny it," she said already moving.
He chuckled at her enthusiasm, "Cinder, not right away. I have got a meeting in 10 minutes and you have to be present at the signing at 1400." His words brought her back to the reality of the work remaining to be done. Her shoulders dropped down as her excitement got driven away.
"We could go away at 1700, get an hour or two before the state dinner," she suggested, looking at the notes scattered around her retina.
"Works for me. I'd reschedule some of my work- "
"You don't have to, Kai," she said cutting him off, not wanting to keep Kai away from his work. Hosting an intergalactic icon along with doing royal duties was nothing short of an abundance of overflowing works.
"You don't have to worry about it, I'd like to spend time with you," he spoke, his words making her fill with adoration. She wasn't going to deny him something that they both wanted. They both knew how scarce time they got to spend together in the last year. Shooing away all concerns of her mind, she brought down her lips to his, kissing him till her heart contended. Her hands went frenzy as they were drawn to his already messy hair.
"How do you still look beautiful with hair looking like a pigeon's nest?" she muttered, somewhat jealous as her breath mingled with his. He smelt like new sheets and mints, and Cinder couldn't help but get drunk on it.
"I'm quite charming," he laughed, already moving to devour her lips again.

ABOUT AEO AND SEO
Navigating the Alphabet Soup: Demystifying AEO and SEO
While both acronyms begin with "A" and "O," AEO and SEO represent vastly different worlds within the realm of international trade and digital marketing, respectively. Understanding the distinctions between these seemingly similar terms is crucial for businesses operating in the globalized landscape.
AEO: Championing Security and Efficiency in Trade
Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) certification isn't simply another compliance burden; it's a mark of distinction. This internationally recognized program, administered by customs authorities, identifies companies with demonstrated security and compliance measures, granting them expedited customs clearance and other trade benefits. Think of it as a VIP lane for trusted businesses, streamlining processes and reducing costs.
The AEO program operates on three levels: AEO-C (Customs Simplification), AEO-S (Security and Safety), and AEO-F (Full). Each level brings increasing benefits, but also requires stricter compliance standards. Earning AEO status involves rigorous audits, robust security procedures, and a commitment to international trade regulations. It's a long-term investment, but the rewards are substantial.
For businesses, AEO certification translates to faster customs clearance, reduced inspections, and priority treatment during peak seasons. This translates to lower logistics costs, improved supply chain efficiency, and ultimately, enhanced competitiveness in the global market. Furthermore, AEO certification acts as a badge of honor, demonstrating a company's commitment to security and compliance, potentially improving its reputation and attracting new business partners.
SEO: The Art of Ranking High in Search Engines
On the other side of the spectrum lies Search Engine Optimization (SEO). While AEO deals with physical goods crossing borders, SEO navigates the virtual world, aiming to improve a website's visibility in search engine results pages (SERPs). By optimizing website content, technical aspects, and online presence, SEO specialists help businesses attract organic traffic – potential customers actively searching for relevant products or services.
Think of SEO as the art of making your website discoverable when someone types related keywords into Google or other search engines. Effective SEO involves crafting high-quality content, building backlinks from reputable websites, and ensuring your website is mobile-friendly and technically sound.
The benefits of effective SEO are undeniable. Higher search engine rankings translate to increased website traffic, which can lead to more leads, conversions, and ultimately, revenue growth. For businesses operating in a competitive online space, good SEO is crucial for attracting potential customers and standing out from the crowd.
Key Differences: Worlds Apart, Yet Intertwined
While AEO and SEO operate in distinct spheres, they share a common goal: facilitating successful international trade. AEO certification streamlines the physical movement of goods, while effective SEO attracts potential customers searching for those goods online. In today's interconnected world, these two aspects are increasingly intertwined.
For instance, an AEO-certified company with a well-optimized website is likely to experience smoother customs clearance, faster deliveries, and a wider online reach, ultimately enhancing its global competitiveness. Conversely, a company with strong SEO but lacking AEO certification might face delays and additional costs at borders, hindering its ability to fulfill online orders efficiently.
The Takeaway: A Symbiotic Relationship
In conclusion, AEO and SEO represent distinct yet complementary strategies for businesses operating in the global marketplace. Understanding the nuances of each is crucial for optimizing trade operations and maximizing online visibility. By embracing both AEO certification and effective SEO practices, businesses can unlock a world of opportunities, navigating the complexities of international trade with efficiency and success. Remember, in the alphabet soup of global business, both "A"s and "O"s play essential roles in achieving long-term prosperity.
