The Browne-Clayton Column stands on a rise in the middle of the Wexford countryside. Modelled on Pompey’s Pillar, erected by the Emperor Diocletian in Alexandria, Egypt in 297, the column climbs 94 feet to a fine Corinthian capital, the whole constructed of Mount Leinster granite. It was built on the instructions of General Robert Browne-Clayton in memory of Sir Ralph Abercrombie, his commanding…

What books/movies/music/whatever influenced the writing and style of Fallen Hero? (sorry if this question doesn't make sense)
Ooooh tough question.
At the heart I think lies vintage Claremont X-men, just because that was sort of the formation of what I felt what a superhero story should be like. Add a little bit of old Alan Moore language (seriously, Captain Britain has some of the best poetry), and Hong Kong pre -97 movies and that’s sort of what’s been percolating my my head.
Other than that... it’s hard. There’s certain songs that’s a lot of Fallen Hero for me, and certain writers whose style has influenced me a lot. A lot of poetry.
V.E. Schwab’s Vicious feels good in my mouth. Jo Clayton’s Blue Magic. P.C Hodgell’s Chronicles of the Kencyrath. A bit of Joe Abercrombie. They write in a way that feels good to read out loud. JG Ballard for the economy. William S. Burroughs for that particular turn of phrase. Dragon Age II for the dialog. CJ Håkansson for the lyrical qualities. I read a lot.

Ten facts about your muse:
⚫ Vaelyn is nearly blind without his glasses because of an accident he had in childhood. His glasses are specially made, and the lenses are aether enhanced to allow him to see as he does. Without them all he can make out are blended colours. After an incident in which he lost his glasses in the middle of a battle, Clayton now insists he has them attached to a chain so that he won’t lose them again. Vaelyn thinks it looks doddering, but puts up with it for Clayton.
⚫ The very same accident that took his vision is also responsible for his poor constitution and frequent migraines.
⚫ By the time Clayton had become acquainted with him, and further asked him to dinner, Vaelyn had already attempted to close himself off emotionally. Clayton’s acquaintance had initially been surprising in and of itself, and he didn’t think someone who seemed so full of joie de vivre would want to associate that much with him. He was used to being somewhat of a social outcast amongst his peers in Ishgard. So, when Clayton asked him to begin a courtship, Vaelyn was taken off guard and tried to discourage Clayton from that course with self-depreciating comments. It obviously didn’t work, and Vaelyn has been surprised about how much he loves Lord Abercrombie.
⚫ Vaelyn did not choose to enter the priesthood of his own volition. While he is deeply religious, it was a condition of his arranged marriage to Iseonne - his deceased wife. Their marriage had been decided upon when they were both very small children, so he was raised to go into the priesthood.
⚫ Vaelyn’s decision to add a medical focus to his study was prompted by the accident in his childhood. While it is fairly standard for those who become priests to know some healing magic, Vaelyn has gone so far as to become enough of an expert in the field of healing magic, as well as more traditional, non-magical healing arts that he has created several new techniques and medications. The medication he takes for his migraines is one of his own design.
⚫ Vaelyn still feels beholden to his in-laws. They are still family to his children, though he has never felt comfortable enough with them to ever consider them so, and for good reason. It was their every intention to hold him in their shadow, and he represented a step up the social ladder for their daughter. Her death has made this manipulation into a more bitterness fueled thing, and they attempt to hold onto some control over him by making allusions that if he displeases them, they’ll have his children taken away. This was also a factor in Vaelyn attempting to shut himself down emotionally, and not initially wanting to get involved with Clayton Abercrombie in a romantic capacity.
⚫ Vaelyn is by no means a wholly righteous individual. He has allowed bitterness and anger to control his life in the past, and still struggles with his temper, penchant towards scathing words, and somewhat cruel actions.
⚫ Vaelyn never wanted children. His son, 12 years older than Marceline unfortunately received the short end of the stick, so to speak. While he dotes on Marceline, he has always been extremely cold and stern with his son. The reason for this is his bitterness towards his wife had grown since childhood and reached a point where Ronnault’s birth represented everything he didn’t want and felt he had no choice in. It was not his wife’s fault, of course, for she too had no choice in the matter, and despite Vaelyn’s obvious emotional distance and that he behaved as he did towards her only out of a sense of duty(he was duty bound to produce children to continue the family line), Iseonne met his bitterness and anger with grace and love. It was only after her death that it truly sunk in how selfish he had been, and Marceline in turn came to represent a sense of regret that took seed within him. He overcompensates for this regret in how much he dotes on Marceline, though he well and truly does love her, even if it took some time to acknowledge this.
⚫ Vaelyn never intended to adopt so many wards into his care. He had initially, fully intended to simply callously use Ulfarr, and had initially chosen charity work out of some vague sense of absolvement for his sins. Ulfarr has been an unintentionally positive influence on him, as the highlander was relentless in seeking advice for his problems and confiding in Vaelyn. While some of his wards do consider him as a father, and it can be said that he is a father to them, he still tries to maintain a certain emotional distance. He often also fails at this.
⚫ Mountain’s Shadow was a very unexpected friend. Let alone for him to become as dear of a friend as he is. His initial meetings with Mountain were not only filled with looking down upon the Roegadyn, but were meant also as a means to investigate allegations of voidsent activity and other suspect things that Ulfarr, who also worked at the agency at the time, had confided to him about. Mountain wore him down(whether intentionally or not) with a genuine sense of welcome and friendship. Their shared love of books of all kinds no doubt had it’s hand in it as well. Suffice it to say, Vaelyn is very bad at making friends.

USA: #jazz #bass VETERAN BASSIST JAY ANDERSON LEADS AN ALL-STAR GROUP THROUGH AN INTRIGUING SET OF POST-BOP JAZZ
VETERAN BASSIST JAY ANDERSON LEADS AN ALL-STAR GROUP THROUGH AN INTRIGUING SET OF POST-BOP JAZZ
In diverse settings ranging from chordless quartets and quintets to a bass-harmonium duet, Anderson performs inspired versions of various pieces including gems by Keith Jarrett, Billy Joel, Gil Evans and Morton Feldman.
Track Listing:  1. Deepscape (Jay Anderson) 2:09  2. Shades Of Jazz (Keith Jarrett) 5:08  3. Rothko Chapel (5th movement) (Morton Feldman) 7:13  4. Southern Smiles (Keith Jarrett) 6:10  5. And So It Goes (Billy Joel) 4:27  6. Time Of The Barracudas (Gil Evans) 4:58  7. Sweet And Lovely (Gus Arnheim, Harry Tobias, Charles N. Daniels) 7:31  8. Momentum (Jay Anderson) 6:23  9. Witchi-Tai-To (Jim Pepper) 6:49 10. The Mighty Sword (Branford Marsalis) 6:40 11. Tennessee Waltz (Pee Wee King, Redd Stewart) 3:28 Musicians:   Jay Anderson, bass   Billy Drewes, alto, soprano, bass clarinet (2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10)   Kirk Knuffke, cornet (2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 10)   Matt Wilson, drums (2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10)   Frank Kimbrough, harmonium (3, 9, 11)   Rogério Boccato, percussion (3, 6, 7, 9) Throughout his prolific career, bassist Jay Anderson has uplifted the performances and recordings of many from the who’s who of jazz. Long overdue to lead his own recording again (his other albums as a leader were made in the early 1990s), Anderson brings together a flexible group of inventive improvisers to perform an eclectic set of colorful and thoughtful music for Deepscape. Five of the selections have the bassist leading a chordless quartet/quintet that features Billy Drewes on alto and soprano, cornetist Kirk Knufke, drummer Matt Wilson and percussionist Rogério Boccato (on four songs). Among the project’s highpoints, “Shades Of Jazz” and “Southern Smiles” were originally recorded by Keith Jarrett’s legendary American Quartet of the early/mid 70’s, a group that included tenor-saxophonist Dewey Redman, bassist Charlie Haden and drummer Paul Motian. These new and joyful performances feature interaction by the two horns and are free bop at its best. The quintet also performs Gil Evans’ “Time Of The Barracudas,” Anderson’s original “Momentum” (which utilizes a tone row that expands exponentially and features passionate playing by Drewes on soprano), and Branford Marsalis’ “The Mighty Sword.” Anderson’s bass is in the spotlight for the brief title cut which sets the tone, and has him making a quiet but powerful statement over a drone. Later, Anderson’s bass takes center stage once again, in a thoughtful folk song-like treatment of Billy Joel’s “And So It Goes.”  Deepscape also includes the 5th movement of composer Morton Feldman’s meditative piece “Rothko Chapel,” a reworking of the standard “Sweet And Lovely,” Jim Pepper’s haunting “Witchi-Tai-To,” and a unique bass-harmonium duet with Frank Kimbrough on “Tennessee Waltz.” Jay Anderson, who was born in Southern California, began playing the bass at the age of 12. He won several awards in both jazz and classical music while attending school. One week after graduating from California State University at Long Beach he joined the Woody Herman Orchestra. The bassist’s career has not slowed down since. Anderson was with the Woody Herman Big Band for a year, spent two years accompanying singer Carmen McRae, and in 1982 moved to New York. Since then he has been on over 400 recordings (including nearly 100 for the Steeplechase label) and worked with such luminaries as Red Rodney, Ira Sullivan, Michael Brecker, Toots Thielemans, the Maria Schneider Orchestra, Eliane Elias, Bennie Wallace, Bob Mintzer, Lynne Arriale, Stanley Cowell, Joe Sample, Paul Bley, Randy Brecker, John Scofield, John Abercrombie, Joe Lovano, Dave Liebman, Lee Konitz, Jay Clayton, Kenny Wheeler, Ryan Truesdell’s Gil Evans Project among countless others, not to mention, David Bowie, Frank Zappa, Tom Waits, Chaka Khan, Michel Legrand, Van Cliburn, (poet) Allen Ginsberg and even Celine Dion. No matter the setting, from duo to a large ensemble, Jay Anderson is a proven asset to every musical situation in which he finds himself. Now on Deepscape, he steps out as a leader, performing creative music that contains many unexpected moments while fulfilling his own musical vision.

Hot stock tips for free: Watch Trump’s State of the Union speech
Clues on trade policy are likely to be top of mind for stocks investors watching President Trump’s State of the Union speech Tuesday. Trade remarks may influence equity sectors from footwear to auto parts, while pharma stocks may be volatile if the president zeros in on drug costs reforms, and financials and housing may be overlooked.
Trump is expected to reference a few areas “where both parties can agree” — including prescription drug prices and infrastructure plans — “but it is difficult to imagine the rhetoric turning into reality when Washington has struggled to keep the lights on,” Compass Point’s Isaac Boltansky says. Boltansky expects the speech to focus on “economic growth, immigration, a few bipartisan mirages and the wall.” Still, this year’s speech may mean less for investors than it has in prior years, as the State of the Union has become “more pomp than policy,” he said.
Trump is likely to “focus on his ‘Promises Made, Promises Kept’ mantra to ensure that the ‘America First’ base of supporters turns out again in force,” Beacon Policy Advisors wrote in a note. “As such, executive actions restricting immigration, lowering drug prices, implementing trade restrictions, and other foreign policy initiatives will be front and center.”
Lawrence Solomon: Why Trump’s State of the Union speech will ruin Trudeau’s night
Huawei fades from U.S. headlines, but still looms large over Trump's trade talks with China
Lawrence Solomon: Remember Trump’s supposedly ‘lose-lose’ trade war? He’s winning. China's losing.
Here’s what to watch:
Trade
“Next steps with China” are the most important trade point, Height Capital Markets’s Clayton Allen said. He expects Trump will “aggressively claim concessions from the Chinese,” while discussions with the European Union are a “dark horse,” as “everyone seems to have let this go to the back burner, but there is still a lot of potential tension.” Allen also expects additional threats to pull out of NAFTA in an attempt to force Congressional support for the USMCA, and “aggressive rhetoric around Venezuela, but no announcement of additional actions.”
Trade is likely to occupy “a substantial portion” of the speech, as legislative action from Congress during the next two years is unlikely, so Trump needs to prioritize “areas where he can enact change unilaterally,” said Veda Partners director of economic policy research Henrietta Treyz. She expects Trump to “leave the door open for further tariffs … but message that progress is being made.”
It’s also possible Trump may focus on the USMCA in a bid to be “flashy,” and “attract headlines” that would trigger the “combustible momentum you’d need to get action from the House or Senate before July 2019,” Treyz said. The president may also indicate his willingness to impose tariffs on foreign automobile imports in an effort to “shore up the automobile industry to protect our national security.”
Boeing is one of the companies to watch in relation to China trade in the State of the Union address. Shown, a Boeing 737 MAX 7.
Much like Trump’s trade agenda, “the speech will likely flow between the two poles that anchor the Administration’s macro trade policy: Tariff Man vs. Art of the Deal,” Cowen’s Chris Krueger wrote in a note. “We will be listening closely for any discussion of the biggest trade variable: auto and auto parts tariffs.”
If Trump mentions NAFTA, automakers and parts suppliers will be the names to watch: General Motors, Ford, Dorman Products, Visteon Corp., Delphi Technologies, American Axle & Manufacturing, Standard Motor Products, Aptiv Plc and Cooper-Standard. Regarding relations with China, keep an eye on industrial companies Caterpillar Inc. and Boeing Co.
Commodity investors may find comments on trade talks with China of particular interest, as industrial metals, such as copper, have been whipsawed by concerns over demand from China as the trade war stings. They’ll be looking for hints ahead of Trump’s March 1 “hard deadline” in trade negotiations, and China’s Vice Premier Liu He’s upcoming Washington meetings.
Retail
If Trump can assure observers that the U.S. and China are moving closer to a trade deal, “apparel and footwear companies will rally” as the probability of tariffs on finished goods eases, Bloomberg Intelligence’s Chen Grazutis said. That might also mean China’s economy will return to faster growth, “a positive for global brands that are counting on sales there.”
Companies including Nike Inc., Under Armour Inc., Canada Goose Holdings, VF Corp., Abercrombie & Fitch, Gap Inc., Ralph Lauren Corp., and PVH Corp. are a few apparel and footwear stocks with tariff exposure or that seek to expand in China.
Infrastructure
This will be a big area to watch as Trump is said to make a renewed push for spending in the sector, widely seen as a rare spot of bipartisanship in Washington. While the topic had been sidelined amid raging debates over tax reform and immigration, many experts see a plan making some inroads this year. Stocks to watch include Eagle Materials, Martin Marietta Materials, Emerson Electric, Eaton, Masco, Vulcan Materials, as well as railroad and airline companies.
Capital Alpha Partners’ Byron Callan said the address is an opportunity to highlight infrastructure as something to get done in 2019 after two years of little or no progress.
Infrastructure spending may be mentioned in the speech, as it’s on the needs list of both parties.
Health Care
Trump is likely to tout his administration’s long-awaited proposal to end a complex system of drug rebates that’s been blamed for helping keep prices high. The measure, announced on Thursday, could hand the president a potential win on drug pricing if passed.
Besides directly targeting middlemen such as pharmacy benefit managers, the policy is a “clear negative” for makers of expensive drugs that use rebates to fend off competition from cheaper alternatives, said Veda Partners analyst Spencer Perlman. Sell-side analysts at Wall Street firms had mixed reactions as health-care supply chain stocks fell on Friday.
Defence
“Trump’s defence spending priorities will be interesting to watch because we’re still really trying to gauge where he stands,” James Bach, Bloomberg Intelligence government analyst said. In general, “Trump has overseen some pretty significant increases in discretionary appropriations. There hasn’t been a lot of noise around cutting spending as of late, so it would be notable if he does bring this up.”
Stocks to watch include Lockheed Martin Corp., Raytheon Co., Northrop Grumman Corp., General Dynamics Corp. and Boeing.
Energy
Trump may flag sanctions on Venezuela’s state-owned oil company, PDVSA, that effectively block the nation from exporting crude to the U.S. That’s left U.S.-based refiners including Valero Energy Corp. searching for alternative sources of heavy crude oil. Goldman Sachs recently noted Valero, Citgo, PBF Energy Inc. and Marathon Petroleum Corp. are the main U.S. refiners exposed to Venezuelan crude imports.
Financials
“We’re not expecting President Trump to really focus or provide new views for the financial sector,” Bloomberg Intelligence’s Nathan Dean said. Trump is likely to “be content to let regulators continue their path towards regional bank de-regulation.”
Housing, Housing Finance
Housing probably won’t be “one of Trump’s hottest topics” during the speech, Bloomberg Intelligence’s Ben Elliott said. “If it gets a mention, it’ll probably be indirect or will just be a few seconds.” Even though housing finance reform and plans for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have been under scrutiny lately, the president is unlikely to extensively discuss them, Elliott added.
There’s a chance Trump “mentions the administration’s intent to end the conservatorship of the government-sponsored enterprises (GSEs) but we think any comments will probably just be in passing and lack specificity about the administration’s plan,” KBW’s Brian Gardner wrote in a note.
The Wall/Shutdown Concern
Height Capital Markets’s Allen will also be watching for how much Trump emphasizes “other ways to get his wall” as another “shutdown seems like it hinges on an emergency declaration.”

Hello, and welcome to the Official Tumblr for Gollancz, the oldest dedicated publisher of SFF and Horror fiction in the world.
I set this up because I'm not allowed to touch the company Instagram or TikTok accounts ("you'll break the algorithm" psht) and I got told off for retweeting too much stuff.

Closing Bell: On This Day - July 31st
youtube
Since the first two people had the first two things there began talk of trading the things for each other. The barter system grew and expanded, eventually becoming the backbone of entire economies until paper currency came around and took the run out of it. Thankfully pro sports still allow for the barbaric movement of people in trade for other, younger people or simply cash considerations.
As it is July 31st we’ve reached the MLB trade deadline which passed a couple hours ago, I hope your teams’ pursuits of able bodied men was fruitful. Let’s revisit some of the notable deals of the past and declare winners and losers.
1989 - On the same day the Blue Jays pick Lee Mazzilli off waivers from the Mets, they trade reliever Jeff Musselman and minor league pitching prospect Mike Brady in exchange for Mookie Wilson, who was made expendable when New York obtained Juan Samuel from Philadelphia. After a slow start, Toronto's new outfielder will play a key role in the team's return to the postseason for the first time since 1985, batting .298 in 54 games.
WINNER: Canada LOSER: Me for thinking this was a good idea and ending up with this as the first deal I found.
1995 - The Mets trade former two-time Cy Young Award winner right-handed pitcher Bret Saberhagen and left-handed pitcher farmhand Dave Swanson (the player to be named later) to the Rockies for righties Juan Acevedo and Arnold Gooch.
WINNER: Anyone getting traded from the Mets. LOSER: This dude here named Gooch who’s named Gooch every day of his life regardless of which team he plays for.
1996 - The Tigers deal first baseman Cecil Fielder to the Yankees for outfielder Ruben Sierra and minor league prospect Matt Drews. It is the first swap in major league history in which two players with more than 220 home runs are traded for one another.
WINNER: The Tigers beat writer who was happy to have something to write about other than Tigers games. LOSER: New York City buffet owners.
1997 - In a deal that will have a major impact on the team's future, the Red Sox obtain Jason Varitek and Derek Lowe when they trade Heathcliff Slocumb to the Mariners. Varitek, who will become Boston's third captain in franchise history, will contribute to the club's success in the next decade, including the world championships in 2004 and 2007.
WINNER: As has been the case since the team’s inception, not the Mariners. LOSER: As has been the case since the team’s inception, the Mariners.
1997 - The A's trade Mark McGwire to the Cardinals for Eric Ludwick, T.J. Mathews, and Blake Stein, a trio of hurlers who will combine for just 30 victories with Oakland. The Redbirds' new first baseman, whose accomplishments will be tainted by the speculation of his use of PEDs, hits an amazing 220 home runs in the 545 games he plays with St. Louis.
WINNER: McDonald’s advertising. LOSER: The trio of hurlers so awful nationalpastime.com couldn’t be bothered to type out their names.
2001 - The Red Sox acquire Expos' reliever Ugueth Urbina for two minor league pitchers, Tomo Ohka and Rich Rundles. The hard throwing closer was nearly traded to the Yankees earlier in the season, but the deal was nixed when the Caracas, Venezuela native failed a physical.
WINNER: Everyone in this trade Ugueth Urbina didn’t threaten with a machete. LOSER: I know pitcher win-loss records don’t tell the whole story, but Tomo Ohka was a real fuckin’ loser.
2004 - The long anticipated trade of Nomar Garciaparra is finally accomplished when the Red Sox shortstop is traded to the Cubs as part of a four-team deal which includes the Twins and Expos. Boston acquires shortstop Orlando Cabrera (Expos) and first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz (Twins) with Nomar, prospect Matt Murton and cash to Chicago, which had shipped minor league southpaw Justin Jones to the Minnesota for Mientkiewicz, who in turn is sent along with Cubs' shortstop Alex Gonzalez, relief pitcher Francis Beltran, and minor leaguer Brendan Harris to Beantown, which sends the trio of Gonzalez, Beltran, and Harris to the Expos for Cabrera.
WINNER: America because the 2004 Cubs famously collapsed the final week of the season and missed the postseason. LOSER: The Cubs.
2004 - Ten minutes prior to the trading deadline, Steve Finley gives the Diamondbacks permission to deal him to the Dodgers. The trade sends the four-time Gold Glove center fielder and backstop Brent Mayne to LA for minor league catching prospect Koyie Hill, flycatcher Reggie Abercrombie, and southpaw Bill Murphy, who was acquired in yesterday's trade with the Marlins.
WINNER: Jesus, who cares. LOSER: Really, who fucking cares.
2006 - The Dodgers trade infielder Cesar Izturis to the Cubs for 300-game winner Greg Maddux. The last minute deadline deal, in which the future Hall of Famer waived his no-trade clause, gives the 40 year-old hurler an opportunity to go to a contender.
WINNER: Leaving the Cubs is one of the great joys in life, so Greg Maddux. LOSER: The Cubs.
2007 - Elvis Andrus and Jarrod Saltalamacchia, along with three minor league pitchers, Matt Harrison, Neftali Feliz, and Beau Jones, are traded by the Braves to the Rangers in exchange for Mark Teixeira and Ron Mahay. The trading deadline deal will help build the foundation for Texas' success in the coming seasons, with Andrus and Feliz playing important roles on the American League champions teams in 2010 and 2011.
WINNER: I’m at a loss on how to snark this one, the Rangers killed this one. LOSER: People who still do the Tomahawk Chop.
2008 - In a three-team swap, the much anticipated departure of Manny Ramirez from Beantown is finally accomplished with the unhappy outfielder being traded to the Dodgers. Former Pirates player Jason Bay will now roam left field for the Red Sox, with Pittsburgh receiving outfielder Brandon Moss and pitcher Craig Hansen from Boston as well as getting third baseman Andy LaRoche and right-hander Bryan Morris from Los Angeles to complete the last-minute trading deadline deal.
WINNER: America, with Manny in the fold the Dodgers swept the top-seeded Cubs in that year’s NLDS. LOSER: The Cubs.
2009 - In a stunning last-minute deal, the White Sox obtain Jake Peavy from the Padres for four pitching prospects, Clayton Richard, Aaron Poreda, Dexter Carter, and Adam Russell. The 2007 NL Cy Young Award winner, presently on the disabled list, had previously refused to waive his no-trade clause to join Chicago in a similar deal proposed in May.
WINNER: The doctor who got to boast to his pals at the country club about his daring new procedure to re-attach a muscle in Peavy’s back that just ripped right fucking off because the human body and baseball are gross. LOSER: The return really turned out to be a steaming pile of pony loaf the Padres got for their ace. The universe was made even though when the Sox gave up the current #2 prospect in all of baseball for fucking James Shields.

Sergei returned from surveying Mount Hope and the replica Ward Engine.
The operation had been costly to him; the man collapsed after his teleport home. Reks, Clayton, Mountain and Grave were quick to lend assistance and saw him to the infirmary to be looked at. The scare was only momentary for most, Sergei was more or less unharmed.
His account, however, gave Mountain cause for much concern...
“I saw its mind.”

Vulnerability. It was something Vaelyn took great pains not to show. Not he, Lord Rillek, head of his household; a stoic, cold man who cared for no one. More and more of late, though, his vulnerability had been showing. In private, to Clayton largely, though a select few others had been privy to small amounts. This Garlean business hadn’t helped either. It had forced him into a staunchly vulnerable position that only injury could provide, and left him open to be watched over, hawk-like, by others. Not only that, but it had provided the realization that Clayton had been kept, in some ways, at arms length. It was to protect him. In part he did wish to protect Clayton. Of course he did. Yet, at the same time he held reserved fears. Love was a tumultuous state of being for him. Which was not to say he felt uncomfortable with Clayton - it was quite the opposite. He’d never felt so comfortable with anyone like this before. It was more a matter of his own feelings being difficult to express or acknowledge, and the bitterness and anger that he had held onto for so long was turning, in some regards, towards guilt instead. The things i’ve done. Love had filled him to bursting, and these things - these secrets - threatened to spill over. He may never speak them, but the past would haunt him. He saw it in Marceline and Ulfarr. In the quiet dreams that sometimes startled him awake at night. He felt it in the familiar anger that still welled at times, leaving him restless and frustrated, especially now that he had to rest and recover, lest he risk the ire of his Knight and Ward respectively. Not even a walk! Not even a walk within the Goblet was to go unsupervised for Vaelyn’s stubborn habit of pushing himself too much. Never had he thought he would be with another again after his wife had died. The wife he never wanted. The wife he resented, even though she had always loved him, and treated him with such undeserved kindness. To be alone was what he thought he desired, yet despite what flaws he had tried to dissuade Clayton with, the Hyur had persisted, and Vaelyn had given in. He realized now that he’d wanted this, else he never would have agreed to the invitation to dinner that had set him along this path. The natural suspicion he’d had was so easily crumbled, and in him, Clayton saw qualities he could not fathom. Mountain seemed to see them as well, and while Vaelyn did not do so intentionally, a small seed of doubt rooted itself within his core, quite at home with the bitterness, and the cold fury that had kept him company all these years. He was afraid. Fear had never been a stalwart companion of his. It came and went, but never had it been so underlying. It was not fear of injury, nor death, but rather of loss and rejection. Things he’d never cared much of losing before. I don’t want to lose you. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Tagged for mentions: @anunlikelyknight @the-original-rper @ffxiv-clayton-abercrombie @berrodtherapscallion

Why do I fight?
Papa doesn’t want me to learn how to fight--he wants to make a world where I won’t ever, ever have to do that. But I want to be able to make sure the world he makes stays forever. Bad people will never stop until they make people sad or they get what they want so I’m going to make sure that when papa can’t fight anymore I’ll be able to instead. I’m seven years old and that’s a lot more than I used to be.
I also want to protect the Agents too. They’re always so sad or angry it seems. They don’t go outside to play or smile at each other very much. I need to protect Godmother Ignera too--she smiles and is silly but I don’t think she’s really very happy.
Everybody here is so nice and I want to make sure we’re together forever. So I’ll help out any way I can! Polly says that everyone can fight in different ways so I’ll do that by helping with the cooking or the sewing until I can help the way everyone else helps.
So--why do YOU fight? - Nanette Abercrombie
