In anticipation of Bridgerton Season 3, I had to gush about two of my very favorite Bridgerton women: Eloise and Kate.
I wrote about why I'm SO desperate to see more of their dynamic in the upcoming season.

Vanity Fair (2018 TV series)
No. of episodes: 7
Olivia Cooke as Becky Sharp
Claudia Jessie as Amelia Sedley
And the whole time while watching House of the Dragon and Bridgerton I was wondering from where these two seemed so familiar.
Fun Fact: It happened as well with Tom Glynn-Carney, the actor who plays Aegon II Targaryen in House of the Dragon, I' ve already watched him as Young Gaius in Domina, but I didn't realise until I looked it up.

To Sir Phillip With Love. Julia Quinn
It is actually the 2nd time I read it. But I desperately needed a book that I new I would like. You know this feeling when you read a book and something is off: it is not like it is terrible, but it is just … okay. So, it was a first time ever for me rereading. And thaaaank god for that decisions.
My head was consumed with the story (even though I knew the outcome, I still forgot like 80% of everything). And I want to give the proper honours to the author! Julia Quinn is the master of building up tension, storylines. And I just love the character progression with my whole heart. I always thought of this book as a story of contracts (female/masculine perspective, introverted/extroverted sides of Eloise and Philip, growing/exploding, low-emotions/boiling with feelings).
The book:
Tumblr media
Honourable mentions, to inner monologues of characters. It allows to connect to the characters on a new level (like you’re under their skin, if it makes sense).
The book:
Tumblr media
so thank you JQ for an opportunity to write a longer review (finally), as your books were my gateway books to the genre.
(This book is not even my favourite of JQ, if I get to reread my favourites, the reviews will be in order, dah ). Cannot wait to see depiction of this book, and what they will change and leave to show people.

Those Bridgertons
Bridgerton (2020 – ) created by Chris Van Dusen Dearest, gentle reader… we need to talk about Bridgerton! Bridgerton‘s first season was released at Christmas 2020 and became a phenomenon, Netflix’s most successful production, and a pleasurable binge-watch over the holidays in our first year of the pandemic. It was a moment, as they say, the chronicling of Daphne Bridgerton’s romance with the…

BOOK RECS
Okay, so lots of people wanted this and so, I am compiling a list of my favourite books (both fiction and non-fiction), books that I recommend you read as soon as humanly possible. In the meantime, I’ll be pinning this post to the top of my blog (once I work out how to do that lmao) so it will be accessible for old and new followers. I’m going to order this list thematically, I think, just to keep everything tidy and orderly. Bridgerton - Review
I was not aware that I had been pining for a new Regency drama until I started watching Bridgerton. Most Netflix-frequenters cannot resist a fresh batch of historical escapism, and Chris Van Dusen’s latest feat doesn’t disappoint. We are plunged into the courting season of London, 1813, as high-society families play at matchmaking with their newly-of-age sprogs. The scandals, swoons, and proposals are all secretly scrutinized by the elusive Lady Whistledown, who publishes her anonymous observations in print for the whole ‘ton’ to sweat over, and remains a mystery to the viewer until the very end.
The series is somewhat Austen-esque in that no one seems capable of communicating their feelings properly. Daphne Bridgerton and Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings, are the most prominent repeat offenders of this. I was tempted to keep a tally of the amount of audible groans I produced in response to the pair’s consistent nebulous waffle, in which they actually hardly admit to anything, and then proceed (or sometimes, precede) to have unusually amazing sex. It’s all incredibly frustrating, but I cannot deny that the script as a whole is pitched very well, and provides plenty of melt-into-the-floor moments for romantic types like myself.
With that in mind, you might want to prepare yourself for Those Sex Scenes. An intimacy coordinator was brought in to work with the actors who would be getting it on, meaning that everything was meticulously choreographed. The raunchy bits (and there are quite a few) are intimate, gutsy, and about as explicit as you can get. Some moments are a little unbelievable (sorry, but no one's ‘first time’ is that good), and the attempts at pillow talk are questionable (the Duke is, yet again, the guilty party here), but the actors actually look comfortable most of the time, which still makes for a blush-inducing watch.
What ultimately stands out for me however is how well this take on the world of Regency London has been designed. The costumes are simply exquisite (sorry, too good an opportunity to miss), and will no doubt inspire many plans for themed Bridgerton parties when it is safe to do so. From Penelope’s bright yellow gowns to Anthony Bridgerton’s alarmingly fluffy sideburns, the entire cast look the part, and blend into the beautiful sets as if it were all one big moving painting.
It’s important to note that the cast itself isn’t as diverse as promised; many have expressed disappointment at the lack of Asian and minority ethnic characters. Nonetheless, I am, quite frankly, incredibly bored of the same white-washed, two dimensional period dramas that completely fail to speak to the contemporary viewer. Bridgerton, then, at least attempts to move away from that trope. I’ve seen the usual racist comments about ‘realism’ floating around, but just because most of the paintings in the National Portrait gallery are of white people, it doesn’t mean that this has to apply to the entire population of a fictional television drama, Karen.
I digress; the casting is excellent. Notable performances include Claudia Jessie as the spirited Eloise Bridgerton, who satisfies my need for a break from the perfect prettiness of her older sister, Daphne, and provides an ample amount of feminist push-back without being branded as ‘the mouthy one’. Nicola Coughlan also gives a wonderful performance as Penelope Featherington, one of the few characters I found myself physically aching for. And then there’s Golda Rosheuvel, who plays Queen Charlotte with absolute ease.
The premise of Bridgerton isn’t revolutionary, and I know that some will hear the string arrangements of ‘bad guy’ and ‘thank u, next’ and practically implode with disgust, but I refuse to feign indifference. The themes within the script are timely, but it doesn’t force you to question your entire existence, which certainly appeals to the exhausted, locked-down sofa dweller like me who just wants to drink wine and indulge in their ultimate Regency fantasy for an evening or two. It’s neither old, nor new, but it certainly fills a hole in the present moment.
Beth Greenwood (she/her) is a writer and the founder of OPHELIA. She can often be found eating absurd amounts of peanut butter and topping up her odd sock collection.
