PROMPT 2 2018 ecl310
POSTERS
Thank you to all of you who have posted or replied to the week one prompt. As usual many of you shared experiences with Enid Blyton books, and this is a great memory for me as I read the Magic Faraway series to my girls when they were tots.
This week we would like you to make a poster that could be used in a classroom. It should be literacy related, and could be similar to something you have seen in a classroom. It should reflect something in literacy that you think is important in a classroom you will one day teach in.
Another thing you could do is take a photo of an existing classroom display, one that is teacher-made, as in handmade, and share that with us!
Your own poster can be digital, or made with materials, scrapbook style, hand drawn - be creative

Prompt 2: literacy poster
I selected this poster, as I believe the ability to ask a good question is highly important. As a primary teacher, every class I have will see a poster similar to this, although the criteria will change slightly depending on the age of the students I am teaching. I have seen many students struggle to successfully question, in literacy, mathematics, and even the school yard. Subsequently, these students could also struggle with comprehension. How can you identify facets of a text, for example, if you cannot think of questions to ask yourself whilst reading?

This poster I saw on my placement at the start of the year in a grade of 5/6 students. I saw this in action when reading about ‘Oliver Twist’. As a teacher, when introducing this into the classroom, I saw how effective it was straight away. The students used a post-it note to put down their ‘think marks’ on their paper or book. I could see some interesting things the students put down and it gave me the opportunity, as the teacher, to gain an understanding of what the students understood or didn’t understand about the text. It also gave some interesting conversation points after reading. This can be used in any year level because it is a simple strategy, yet very effective.

This poster is up in the Grade 6 classroom I am currently on placement in. I think its an important tool to help the students track their own work progress as well as see where they are moving to next in the writing stage. This visual has helped them to break down the writing process and recognise the stages a writer has to move through in order to publish a piece, rather than assuming that all that is involved in writing is producing a draft and then publishing the piece. It also highlights how each stage is as important as the next one and the one that came before their current stage as each piece of the pie chart is the same equal size.

Week 2
This is a poster I made based on one in the grade 4 classroom wall I saw on my placement. The students were working on formulating and writing their own discussion texts, this poster helps students to stay on task. The poster was on the wall was from teachstarter.com

Prompt Two: Posters
My poster is focused on the 5 important elements that make a story. This poster is designed for a younger year level, of grades 1-2, as a way to help students visually see and break down this process of character, setting, problem, events and solution. This poster was inspired from the website ‘Teaching with a Mountain View’ (website link provided), where each of the 5 story elements have been designed as puzzle pieces. On my poster, in response to the definition to each of the 5 elements featured on the train carriage, the teacher uses the cloud of smoke above each of the carriages to write about the chosen book. The example book I used was Stuck, by Oliver Jeffers.
