The Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus in Greece is a remarkable testament to ancient Greek artistic prowess and classical architecture. Built in the 4th century BCE, this meticulously designed amphitheater features exceptional acoustics, allowing even faint whispers to be heard from the highest seats. It was primarily used for Greek tragedies and comedies, highlighting the cultural significance of theater in ancient times.

(apologies to my followers here for an off topic post, but i want this to show up in some tags (for once) and my personal account is... hidden from search, lol.)
i recently recovered my old hard drive from my dead laptop, including recovering my theatre bootlegs. one of which is something i've seen people asking about for the past couple of years (and had been trying to find again myself without luck): a BBC4 broadcast of the 2015 Barbican production of Anne Carson's translation of Antigone, directed by Ivo van Hove. it was broadcast twice and never released on DVD or permanent streaming. there used to be public links around, but all of them are dead as of right now that i could track down.
so i have uploaded it to archive.org now i have it again!
Tumblr media
i had to convert the mkv to mp4, for reasons of 'my broadband is shit and uploads too slowly', but it's still good quality. anyway, i enjoy this production a lot. i want more people to watch it! i'm glad i could get it back and upload it somewhere.

Villain song! What do you all think?
I’m going for a sinister villain. Everyone’s got a twist villain these days. It’s getting overdone, so I’m sticking with the classic cartoonishly-evil villain.
This is King Minos. He’s a proud and manipulative tyrant. He isn’t all that angry or anything. He’s a charismatic and goofy guy — which is part of what makes him so terrifying. He genuinely doesn’t care about anything or anyone besides himself. He sees no value on human life at all. Everyone and everything is a toy to him.
“Your boy has a good head on your shoulders. Let’s make sure it stays that way, hm? Get back to work.” ~ King Minos, Legacy of Icarus

Why I wanted to use shadow puppets as a way to tell the Sisyphus musical
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So three main reasons
Reason 1: Sisyphus is a snake-like character. So the movements of the shadows fit his mindset.
While designing Sisyphus, I was inspired by Dr. Facilier and Magica Despell from the Ducktales reboot and and how the shadow movements helped bring to life their scheming nature.

Combined with my obsession with shadow plays in general, I thought it would be cool to take that and apply it to a one-act musical about a mythical schemer.
Reason 2: The same reason as before but flipped on its head. He's in the shadows. Sisyphus used to be a king, but now he's pushing a bolder uphill while the world passes him by.
Tumblr media
Reason 3: To suit the tone of the show, when creating a new show, most people won't know what to expect. Is it a parody? Is it a drama?
Since this musical focuses more on the folkloric elements of the tale, having the shadow puppet design helps clearly mark the fairy tale tone the show wants to present. These design choices help separate the show from other Greek myth musicals like Hercules and Epic the Musical as well.
Oh also
I’m excited to show this guy once his puppet is done.

the costume design in the 1957 adaptation of Oedipus Rex has to be some of the most beautiful I've ever seen in a theatrical production. loving this already.

I think every sad movie should come with an extra ten minutes at the end of funny bloopers, dumber versions of intense scenes, or the actors dubbing over tragic moments with stupid jokes. Like the satyr plays at the Dionysia.
