The Output: Episode 1: PEOPLE

Who are the different people involved in the new Institute for Digital Culture? What constitutes an Institute within a university in 2023? And what do we even mean by "digital culture"?

In this first episode of The Output, we're going to ponder what it means to hold so many different perspectives of what digital culture is - and what it could be - within a research environment like this one.

You'll hear contributions from university staff and associates including Steve Williams - Director of Library and Learning Services, Clarissa Wilson - PhD candidate, Andrew Fletcher - Director of Attenborough Arts Centre, Ross Parry - Professor of Museum Technology and Director of the Institute for Digital Culture, Andrew Hugill - Professor of Music and Creative Computing, Uzma Johal MBE - Co-Founder and CEO of Threshold Studios, and Dr Alberto Cossu - Lecturer in Media and Communication.

The Output is written and presented by Dr Sophie Frost and Chris Thorpe-Tracey, who also edited it. Artwork is by Matt C Stokes. The Output is a Low Rumbling production for the Institute for Digital Culture at the University of Leicester.

Finishing chapter 2 of my School for Good and Evil AU for House MD (Hilson driven). This is getting fun. I love the SGE setting, especially the School for Good. It's so fucking creepy (important: I'm using the book world, not the movie world, which is less explored and thus less creepy). I'm not a horror writer by any means, but it's fun diving into the really, really fucked up teachings of the School for Good. Specifically how Wilson, a character known for being selfless and subjugating his own needs for those of others, reacts to the demands being made of him. Also how his anxious, people-pleasing personality reacts to the sense that someone is always watching and judging him, trying to see if he can fit himself into a box he can't fit into.

I think a lot of the reason the horror and hypocrisy of the School for Good went unexplored in the main series is because the author wanted to make Clarissa Dovey (the dean of Good) a nice, warm mentor figure. She isn't. She systematically destroyed all gay students who couldn't fit into the closet for decades (this is confirmed in canon). She enforces conformity ruthlessly (also confirmed). Under her tenure, Good churned out people who would burn "wicked women" for no clear reason, punish any crime with death or dismemberment, and torture beaten foes (confirmed). And frankly I think it would be disrespectful to her not to properly display her evil (ironic) in my fic. Especially when it can be used to torment (and thus do some fun character exploration of) Wilson.

Dovey and her teachings on Good will make Wilson wonder if doing what others need him to do will strip him of literally every facet of his identity (his as-yet-undiscovered queerness, his morals, his autonomy, his literal human body). Whether he wants to do it. Whether he has any choice at all.

Tldr: While House is finally around people who understand him and having the time of his life over at Evil, Wilson is being systematically destroyed and driven mad by a person and ideology that literally calls itself Good. This fic is going to be fun times. Love putting blorbo in very new situations.

ENTER THE REVENANT… | ORIGINAL STORY + OC’s

ENTER, THE CALYPSO SHIP. The year 2533.

In a distant galaxy, a group of 8 young individuals were assembled to track and observe the extraterrestrial life forms given the name THE REVENANT. Given its name by American special forces in cooperation with NASA, the revenant life forms are an alien species found on the planet CALYPSO. Project Revenant was created by special forces in the year 2500 in connection to over 45 deaths on the ship ROMULUS, sent to the planet Calypso to study the alien life forms. All documents of their expedition were erased from public records, until 6 years later in which a new expedition was formed. Project revenant. The project covered a ship, containing 35 passengers, 8 of which would be the future team to detail the highly sought after Revenant species. When all members of the team reached 18 years old, their ship was disconnected from the NOSTRADAMUS mother ship and sent on a path to Calypso. All team members were trained in individual specialties by the NASA special forces for all needs to be met during the ship’s travel away from the mother ship. Once the Calypso team reached the outer rings of the planet, all communications to the Nostradamus were severed due to satellite interference in connection to the Revenant.

MEET THE CREW….

CAPTAIN TESSA “white wolf” KANE is the leader of the revenant and assigned pilot of the ship. Her parents were once well known physicists on the ROMULUS expedition, and were killed in action 6 years prior to the formation of the revenant. Tessa was assigned her position after years of extensive training for the mission, and dedication in leading her closest friends that would soon become her crew. Tessa is 24 years old, born on July 21st, 2509. (fc: cailee spaeny)

LAYLA “reaper” CARTERS is second in command to tessa, and is the captain’s closest friend. After being orphaned shortly after the disaster on the ROMULUS expedition, she bonded with tessa and found herself growing closer with the kane family. Layla had training in aviation prior to the formation of project revenant and worked alongside Tessa’s older brother in learning cartography skills. Layla is 24, born on March 7th, 2509. JASON “indiana” KANE is the older brother of Tessa and the lead tracker and cartographer of the revenant. Jason studied alongside his father in his teenage years learning chemistry before his passing, and trained his younger sister in basic training. Jason faced his struggles after the death of his parents, but stayed strong in order to lead alongside his sister and secure his place on the revenant expedition. ELAINE “hawkeye” WILSON is the weapons and tech expert on the revenant. Elaine was trained in weaponry by her father, and found an interest in technology on the ship as she grew older. While on the revenant, she receives transmissions from home base and is in charge of any repairs needed on the ship. Elaine’s closest friend, CLARISSA, also shares similar interests and the two work together on the ship. Elaine is 24, born on December 9, 2509. (fc: sophie thatcher)

CLARISSA “monarch” PALMER is the weather tracker and repairs expert on the revenant, alongside elaine. Clarissa was hesitant to join the revenant team, leaving her mother behind alone at base, but was ultimately persuaded to for the sake of the research they were setting out for. Her close relationship with Elaine kept her going during the long time spent on the revenant, as she even sent messages to Clarissa’s mother during their time on the ship. Clarissa is 24, born on June 24th, 2509. (fc: amandla stenberg)

RYAN “ronin” MICHEALS is the extraterrestrial life expert on the revenant and training specialist for the team alongside Jason. Ryan was a lone wolf for most of his teenage years after the passing of his parents when he was 6, but grew close with Jason during their training for project revenant. The two work closely together while on the ship and Ryan has also grown close with Tessa. Ryan is 25, born on February 12, 2508. (fc: rohan campbell)

Book Review for The Insufferable Adam James

I can’t even begin to describe how wonderful it was to return to Moonshine! In the third book of the Moonshine series, we turn our attention to the town heartthrob, Adam James. We were given a hint of something going down at the end of “The Write Way for Love,” and it turns out these two books are set within the same timeline. While this can be read as a standalone, reading the books out of order will reveal spoilers for the previous books. If you intend to read “Meet Me in Moonshine” (where it all begins), definitely read it first, as this will give away the ending of that book (and trust me, the mystery is what makes that book so much fun!). With Lissy’s sass and Adam’s ability to turn anything into an innuendo, get ready to laugh, swoon, and fall in love with the people of this quaint little town.

Sixteen years. Sixteen years had passed since Adam James broke Clarissa Wilson’s heart. But you know what they say, revenge is best served cold. Adam may think it is a cute game of Truth or Dare with the new stranger in town, but Clarissa (now known as “Lissy”) has other things in mind. She’ll take Adam up on his little three-kiss dare, doused with much-deserved payback. The problem is, this kindling is fanning a flame she had hoped was extinguished. She wasn’t looking for complicated; she just wanted to return to her hometown of Moonshine under the cover of night, live her life, and maybe grab a singing gig at The Pope. Instead, she has become the star hairdresser at the local beauty salon and can’t seem to shake the attention of the last person she wants to recognize her. All games aside, the past and the present need to stay separated, which means keeping Adam as far away from her heart as possible. She has survived worse; surely, she can survive the gravitational pull of one “Adam freaking James.” How hard could that be?

While I am sad to close the book on Clarissa and Adam, I was very excited to get a sneak peek at a pairing I have always been suspicious about. For those who are as much of a fan of the Moonshine series as I am, get ready for a little festive magic coming later this year!

As I make progress on my Hilson hs reunion fic (6500 words and counting!), I am also beset by ideas for a House MD School for Good and Evil AU. So far I am leaning towards the second option I previously laid out, where House is sorted into Evil and Wilson is sorted into Good.

Although the option of doing the reverse is interesting, I think exploring how the School for Good (which lures people in with promises of love and acceptance and then turns around and kills its gay students, and forces all students to conform to a perfect, smiling rigidity under pain of death) is actually more evil than the School for Evil (which pretends to torture its students but often encourages them to look outside the norm, and teaches discarded kids to fend for themselves in a world bent on killing them) is more interesting. So while Wilson is driven deeper and deeper into a pit of having to conform and smile unless he dies (representative of some of his canon mental health struggles)--- House comparatively thrives when given attention, guidance, and scary magic. An example of how this works is that House's father was sorted into, and did well in, the School for Good.

This also sets up a possible dramatic payoff where House chooses to give up the School for Evil to help Wilson escape, in order to pursue a life with Wilson as perpetual outsiders (similarly to how he in canon gives up his career for Wilson).

Also I think Student!House and Lady Lesso would be excellent foils for each other, as they are remarkably similar characters in many ways, and would make for interesting kindred spirits. Similarly, Dovey and Student!Wilson could be interesting foils, with Dovey as a repressed probably gay character who chooses to perpetuate systemic violence against queer people, and Wilson as a repressed gay character who chooses to risk his life to survive as he is.

This could be really fun, guys.

clarissa very much lived on the outskirts of hawkins high school, and that was also very much by choice. she had just a couple of weeks left of senior year before she was going to leave hawkins in a cloud of dust. she wanted to live in the city, probably work at some coffee shop to make ends meet while she went to art school. either way, it was better than dooming herself to the life of surburbia in a place that never seemed like it would accept her for who she was.

being a fly on the wall meant that she observed a lot. she had called chrissy cunningham dumping jason carver's ass over spring break and coming back from it on eddie munson's arm. they had been making eyes at each other for a while now. she noticed the way steve harrington still lamely chased nancy wheeler's tail like a lost, dumped ( literally ) puppy. she also noticed how robin buckley seemed to pine after the most insufferable bi gals this school had to offer - tammy and vickie. but vickie was too wrapped up in her dude bro of an on / off again ex to realize what was in front of her. pathetic.

clarissa envied robin to some degree. that slow step out of the closet where she still had a spark in her eye. a fire burning in blue eyes that stayed fused in her mind. clarissa had been outed in 10th grade after being caught in a closet ( poetic ) with lisa wilson, who kept up the story that clarissa came onto her. and frankly, clarissa didn't give enough shits to fight against the popular crowd. so, here she was. one of the only openly gay students at hawkins high and hating every second of it. did she mention that she was ready to leave this stupid town?

she watched from her locker as vickie brushed by robin, exchanging a flirty little look despite being on her boyfriend's arm. it was bullshit, alright? whatever game this was, she could see it written all over robin's face.

with a sigh, clarissa shut her locker and walked down the hall to robin's, leaning her shoulder into the one next to the girl's. "hey," she breathed out, her own blues studying robin for a moment. "before you say you're fine, i know you -- i mean, i know better than that . . . but you doing okay?"
