Night - May Prompts (22)
John kneels up on the bed.
They’d considered a cottage on Skye, a palazzo near Montepulciano, and on a client’s recommendation, a luxury penthouse in the 4th arrondissement in Paris. For a day or two it had been Mykonos, then Auckland, then definitely Bangkok, then after a miserably rainy weekend, Puerto Vallarta. In a moment of weakness, even Mycroft’s private suite at Claridge’s was briefly on the table, though that was thankfully short-lived.
Nothing felt right. Finally, Sherlock had plopped down on the sofa next to John one afternoon and said there is nothing more deceptive than an obvious fact and right then and there they’d both known at exactly the same moment what to do.
Turns out when they most want each other, where they most want to be is home.
The big day went as well as they could’ve hoped, lack of attempted murders aside, and now it’s just the two of them again, same as it ever was, in a way it’s never been before.
John touches the smooth gold ring round his finger and clinks it gently against its twin.
He had one of these a long time ago. He’ll never have another.
The ring, of course, and the wedding night.
Sherlock is languid and warm beneath him.
His husband, sweet as a burst-berry on his tongue.

CLOSED STARTER FOR @kashvisaxena Location: The Country Club – Carriage Falls
"I'm gonna be honest with you, ever since I visited you at Bubble Time I've had high tea stuck in my head. Now, listen, I've been to England maybe five times, and I've had high tea at Claridge's in London and the real traditional one at Blenheim Palace– so it's safe to say this does not even rank closely in comparison. But, worth the try. Maybe it feels like home if you drown out the horrid American accents." A laugh fell from her lips to ensure Kashvi knew she was joking, or maybe just half joking. The English were, by default, must more sophisticated. "Worst case scenario, there's a good restaurant down the street." Oh if Nicole can do anything, it's ramble. In good spirit, though, she'd tell herself. "So, how are you liking it here so far? I think the inquiry to purchase businesses means we've sold you maybe indefinitely on the location?"

Drabble - Is that so difficult to believe?
This one is a request drabble. I hope it is as you had hoped. I am open for request on scenes, or missing scenes.
Cora closed the door behind her. Tears were stinging behind her eyes. How could he be so cruel. She did not know he was planning to come to London. She would never have accepted Bricker's invitation to go out for dinner. A dinner with Robert at Claridge's had more appeal to her than a dinner with Mr. Bricker. Although she had enjoyed today and tonight. Walking around London with Mr. Bricker had been fun. He was genuinely interested in her and what she had to say. Something Robert never did. He never asked her opinion about anything and when she tried to learn more about things, he brushed her aside or ignored her.
Mr. Bricker made her feel young again and appreciated. She was not Cora the Countess of Grantham, she was not Cora the hostess, she was not Cora the mother. No, she was just Cora, Cora Crawley née Levinson. She could express what she saw in a painting, but also, he was genuinely interested in her story how she came to England.
When she came back at Rosamund's place, and she saw Robert she had been so happy. Seeing her husband had made her heart flutter from love. Her face was beaming from love and happiness, but then she saw his expression and heard his words. 'Bricker was interested in discussing the pictures with you?' He said it with so much disdain. He made it even worse when he said: 'That an art expert would find your observations on the work of Piero della Francesca impossible to resist? Yes. It is hard to believe!' There had been anger in his voice. Her face had dropped, she did not want to show him that she was hurt, but she knew it was all over her face. He must have seen that.
There was a knock on her door. Cora had a bit of hope it was Robert, but it was her maid Baxter.
+++
Robert sat back down; he got up when Cora said she was going to bed. He had tried to stop her, but she said. 'It is quite all right. You said what you think, and you have every right to do so.' and she left. But he had indeed every right. She was his wife and there she was dining with another man. And not just a man, no that sleazy man or an art dealer Mr. Bricker. Why was he so interested in Cora, did he not see her wedding ring. Why was Cora not stopping him? She was encouraging him in his behaviour, did she like getting attention from another man? Was he not enough for her?
He poured himself another drink, Rosamund had good whisky he thought when he chugged his glass. He poured himself another one. That one also was a one sip drink, so he poured himself one more. He already felt he was unsteady on his legs, but he did not care, he poured himself one more, he said, one more cannot hurt. When he put the bottle back, there was not enough left for a full glass, so he emptied the bottle.
Then he started his way upstairs. They had stayed in Rosamund's house countless of times, so he could find Cora's bedroom in the dark, or when he was drunk like he was now. He opened her door and wanted to go inside when a hand on his shoulder stopped him.
"Milord, I have your clothes ready in your dressing room."
Rosamund had given them their own rooms, Robert's dressing room was, as in Downton next to Cora's room. He looked at Bates. "Can you stand still, please." He asked Bates, who was swaying in front of him. He did not realise it was he himself who was not standing still.
Bates did not answer but guided him towards the dressing room and helped him out of his clothes and into his night clothes. Then he directed him in the small bed that was prepared by Mead in this room. Baxter had asked for a bed outside of her Ladyships bedroom. Bates could only agree that in this state, his lordship should not go into her ladyship’s bedroom.
+++
The train drive home had been awkward. Robert had not said anything while helping her into the carriage and the minute the train started moving, he had left. Cora was happy he was gone; she could not face him. She was so angry at him, how dared he talk to her in that way. He basically said she was a nobody who could not have any interesting thoughts in her head. She knew Robert was old fashioned, but this was another level, she had never encountered with him before.
The care ride had even been worse. Robert clearly wanting to talk to her, but she kept focussing on her book. She did not even know what book she was holding, and not a letter was read, but she did everything to not look at Robert.
Once they were back home, she had gone up without saying a word. It was not strange for her to go up directly after coming home. It was a standard ritual, to go and take of her hat. For now, she was more than relieved with that custom, she needed some time to compose herself, before facing all the guest that could arrive any moment. She also needed to confirm to Baxter, that she could stay. Yesterday she finally told her everything, but Cora knew she did not steal out of greed. She was much too fond of her to let her go.
+++
Cora made sure her posture was perfectly straight and her shoulders were back when she walked down the stairs. She forced a smile on her face and walked towards Robert. He was standing there all smiles and clearly proud of what they had prepared. Had he forgotten what happened last night. Did he step over it so easily?
"Have you seen what we've dug out for the Ruskies?" He greeted Cora. "I say 'we', of course it was Pattinson who did it." He gave her a proud smile.
Cora's face did not give away anything of her anger. She smiled at the staff that was working in the great hall. "Does it matter? We both know you place no value on my opinions." She quickly looked at Robert, but then averted her face again.
"Cora, I was cross. I had travelled the length of England to spend the evening with you, and you had gone out. Aren't I allowed to be cross?"
"You're allowed to be cross, but you're not allowed to be unjust." She still had that forced smile on her face and kept looking around. "Now, would you excuse me? I think they're here." https://www.fanfiction.net/s/14263255/6/Drabbles

"'BLACK MARKET' IN COAL CADI TO BOOST PENALTIES," Toronto Star. October 14, 1943. Page 2. ---- Jails Driver 60 Days When Load 896 Pounds Short ---- OFFENCE PREVALENT ---- "A" Police Court, City Hall, Magistrate Browne. "Stealing coal is a very prevalent offence and is increasing all the time. Citizens pay for coal and do not get it," declared Magistrate Browne in sentencing Jack Russell, a coal driver to 60 days in jail on a charge of stealing coal from his employer.
Mannis Frankel defence counsel, pleaded with the court to reduce the sentence. "There is a black market in this city, and if stealing coal continues I am thinking of increasing the penalty," replied his worship.
Fred Downer. city inspector, stated that at a house on Applegrove Ave. where accused delivered a load of coal, "I measured and weighed the coal and found it 896 pounds short."
Russell claimed he delivered all the coal that was on the truck. "I did not steal any," he said.
George Shelley admitted stealing an overcoat from a parked auto, and was sentenced to three months. The accused was seen taking the coat and was chased by a citizen and handed over to the police," testified Det. Roy Perry.
Four years in penitentiary wan the sentence given Michael Berenda, [PICTURED, RIGHT] who pleaded guilty of wounding Mrs. V. Hapichuk, causing her bodily harm. Complainant said accused had been molesting her for some months. "He wanted me to live with him. I refused. He said he would kill me. On Aug. 4 I was on my way to work with another woman and was beaten up. I was in a hospital nine weeks," she said.
George Patterson stated he was leaving his home on Maria St., Oct. 4. "I saw the two women." said witness. "Then I saw accused strike, one over the head with a hammer. He hit her a second time and she fell and he hi her again. I chased him and he pulled out an open knife and slashed his throat. I called the police.
Dr. D. P. Philip said Mrs. Haplchuk received two skull fractures and other injuries.
M. Frankel, defence counsel, said accused cut his throat.
Charged with stealing radio parts from their employer. Hishashi Fududa. Charles Kadota and Yukin Watanabe, Japanese, pleaded guilty. Histoshi Moriyama, also a Japanese, admitted stealing two electric motors from his employers. All were remanded to Oct. 21 for sentence.
Sergt. William Martin stated he found about $200 worth of radio parts in Kadota's room. "In Fududa's room I found $20 worth of parts and in Watanabe's room radio parts valued at $55," he said. "They all admitted taking them from the radio firm where they were employed. In Moriyama's room I found two motors he said he stole," said witness.
"There is no suggestion they were going to send messages or anything," said T. Elmore, defence counsel. "They are efficient workers"
"They are efficient thieves," said Magistrate Browne.
DRIVES CAR ZIG-ZAG ---- D Police Court, City Hall. Magistrate Pritchard. A fine of $25 and costs or 70 days was imposed on Norman Claridge, who pleaded guilty to careless driving.
Constable Ella testified he had observed accused driving in a zig- zag manner on the wrong side of Fleet St. early today. There were four persons in the front seat of the car and accused had been drinking and was in no condition to drive, the officer said.
"If the two pedestrians had not quickened their pace, or if they had stopped walking until I got past, I could have cut in front of them and the accident would have been avoided," declared Pte. Themas Walker, who pleaded not guilty of dangerous driving.
Testimony disclosed that Jack McLean, 38 of Shafisbury Ave, had died of injuries on Oct. 3 after having been in collision with a motor- cycle driven by accused on Sept. 29 at Weston Rd. and Northlands Ave.
George Devano said he and Mr. McLean were crossing from the southwest corner of Northlands Ave. and Weston Rd. to the east side of Weston Rd.
"I was slightly in advance," he said. "Mr. McLean took a more diagonal course. I observed a motorcycle and automobile a block away. The first Intimation I had of the accident was when I heard the motorcycle sliding on its side along the pavement behind me. No warning signal had been given, Mr. McLean was lying unconscious."
Witness did not think the motorcycle had been travelling at an excessive rate of speed.
"I find there was an error of calculation on the part of accused in Judging progress of the pedestrians crossing the street, and I find that accused is guilty of careless driving. The penalty will be $35 and costs or one month," said his worship.
IGNORES ARMY CALL ---- C Police Court, City Hall, Magistrate Prentice. "The letter was delivered to your home and there was no reason why you did not receive it," commented Magistrate Prentice, sentencing Maria Priola, to 30 days in jail for failure to report for military service.
Douglas Morrison, chief of records for selective service, said accused was ordered to report for military service on Aug. 27, but so far as he knew had not done so.
Joseph Spalla, mail carrier, said he delivered a registered letter to accused's home about two months.
Priola said he did not receive any letter during the past two months. "I did not do any dodging aaround," he said. "I have now joined the army and am supposed to report today."
Gerrard G. Dennis and Charles M. Conron, jointly charged on three counts of breaking and entering, pleaded guilty. Both were remanded to Oct. 21 for sentence.
"Conron was on three jobs, while Dennis was alone on the rest," said Detective A. Morrison.
"They seem to have a penchant for French doors," remarked Crown Attorney Malone after the detective recounted how entries were made by breaking a glass in French doors at the rear of the houses.
"Dennis has a long, bad record. but he has been helpful in connection with these thefts, and has served four terms for exactly the same kind of thefts." [AL: Berenda was married, with no kids, a Polish immigrant with a poor mastery of English, and worked as a factory hand at the same place his victim worked. He was convicted of wounding. He had no previous criminal record. At Kingston penitentiary he was convict #7473 and worked in excavation, but was transferred by January 1944 to the low-security Collin's Bay Penitentiary. From there he was paroled in late 1945. He never came back to prison.]

Have you considered that wedding planning has set you back? Noone questions your skills, Madame, but you have been.. distracted. Now that you and Falcone can be together.
Tumblr media
"Is this a attempt to make fun of me? I am still the queen of fashion and my relationship has no impact of my skills. I can plan my own wedding AND be a wife and crime lord. So do not speak ill to me again. Marsha Falcone does not take things lightly. Marsha Claridge was a soft woman. Wait until you see the new me when I come home!"
