Rita was born in Orlesian-Occupied Denerim in 8:82 Blessed. When she was still very young, she was relocated back to one of her family's many estates in Val Chevin to keep her 'cultured'. Her father was a Chevalier and remained in Denerim to maintain control over Ferelden. She idolized her father, and he encouraged her to the path of becoming a Chevalier even when her mother did not. She spent much of her childhood and early adulthood training to go to the Académie, but her mother forbade her from attending. Her magic erupted particularly late, after she heard of her father's death at the hands of the Hero of the River Dane. His death hit her hard, she gradually became disillusioned with the Chevaliers entirely after seeing the way they behaved in Orlais.
Her family was wealthy and could afford to hire tutors that kept her out of the Circle. She was a quick student. The discipline she had forged in herself while training with a sword helped her immensely. Her magic was never particularly strong though, and she mostly focused on buffing her combat abilities. Because of her magic, she was discouraged from marriage, and she spent her 20s and 30s a spinster who travelled around both Orlais and Ferelden.
She was eventually recruited by the Warden-Constable of Orlais, Alisse Fontaine in 9:18 Dragon. Being part of the Order gave her a sense of purpose again, but she remained generally distant from her fellow Wardens. Her unique blend of swordsmanship and magic was invaluable in the never ending battle against the spawn. She inspired many mages in the order to learn combat skills, including one Clarel de Chanson.
When Alisse Fontaine became the Warden Commander of Orlais in 9:28 Dragon, she selected Warden Blackwall to become the Warden-Constable of Orlais. However when the time came, she nominated Rita to become the Warden-Commander of Ferelden. Her time at Vigil’s Keep reinvigorated her and showed her that she didn’t need to keep everyone at arms length. She began correspondence with de Chanson and they later became romantically involved.

from Clarel [Easter] BUT ON THE THIRD DAY CHRIST AROSE; And, in the town He knew, the rite Commemorative eager goes Before the hour. Upon the night Between the week's last day and first, No more the Stabat is dispersed Or Tenebrae. And when the day, The Easter, falls in calendar The same to Latin and the array Of all schismatics from afar— Armenians, Greeks from many a shore— Syrians, Copts—profusely pour The hymns: 'tis like the choric gush Of torrents Alpine when they rush To swell the anthem of the spring. That year was now. Throughout the fane, Floor, and arcades in double ring About the gala of THE TOMB, Blazing with lights, behung with bloom— What child-like thousands roll the strain, The hallelujah after pain, Which in all tongues of Christendom Still through the ages has rehearsed That Best, the outcome of the Worst. Nor blame them who by lavish rite Thus greet the pale victorious Son, Since Nature times the same delight, And rises with the Emerging One; Her passion-week, her winter mood She slips, with crape from off the Rood. In soft rich shadow under dome, With gems and robes repletely fine, The priests like birds Brazilian shine: And moving tapers charm the sight, Enkindling the curled incense-fume: A dancing ray, Auroral light.Burn on the hours, and meet the day.
The morn invites; the suburbs call The concourse to come forth—this way! Out from the gate by Stephen's wall, They issue, dot the hills, and stray In bands, like sheep among the rocks; And the Good Shepherd in the heaven,
To whom the charge of these is given, The Christ, ah! counts He there His flocks? But they, at each suburban shrine, Grateful adore that Friend benign; Though chapel now and cross divine Too frequent show neglected; nay, For charities of early rains Rim them about with vernal stains, Forerunners of maturer May, When those red flowers, which so can please, (Christ's-Blood-Drops named—anemones), Spot Ephraim and the mountain-way. But heart bereft is unrepaid Though Thammuz' spring in Thammuz' glade Invite; then how in Joel's glen? What if dyed shawl and bodice gay Make bright the black dell? what if they In distance clear diminished be To seeming cherries dropped on pall Borne graveward under laden tree? The cheer, so human, might not call The maiden up; Christ is arisen: But Ruth, may Ruth so burst the prison? The rite supreme being ended now,
Their confluence here the nations part: Homeward the tides of pilgrims flow, By contrast making the walled town Like a depopulated mart; More like some kirk on week-day lone, On whose void benches broodeth still The brown light from November hill. But though the freshet quite be gone—
Sluggish, life's wonted stream flows on.

The Fifth Blight was taken out before you could spit into the wind by two fresh faced Wardens and some change sprinting around Fereldan. The Calling has started for every Grey Warden and your order is threatened with the potential to be wiped out and leave the world incapable of defending itself from the next one which will probably happen hundreds of years into the future.
Whether joined up for honor, glory, or because you were dead either way, the calling released by Corypheus threatens to make everything you've sacrificed be for nothing. You're not saving the world you're just dying for it and if all of you die then there will be no one to save it next time.
The time has never been more appropriate to attempt something new with fighting the blights. While you justifying Warden Commander Clarel's decisions is neither here nor there getting to the point where she made those decisions is understandable. Nobody wants to die and especially nobody wants to die for a lost cause.
Summoning demons maybe even the sacrifice of people who are dying anyways is not so terrible an idea when you pit it against solving the very world destroying problem you've dedicated your life to. If two toddlers of the order can defeat a blight before it destroys even the country, certainly with the aid of some demons, you can destroy the old gods before they become blighted. Then no one will need be sacrificed to the same cause as you.

If I had a nickel for every high ranking female Grey Warden mage who made a deal with Corypheus in a very nebulous plan to end the Blights, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot, but

I'm not going to lie the whole Grey Warden plot with Alistair in Inquisition bothers me so much because I don't think it makes any sense for Clarel to get away with branding him a traitor in my worldstate. It's never outright stated, but since he's said to be the senior-most Warden after coming back from the fade and with the Orlesian Warden-Commander dead outranks every Grey Warden in the fortress my assumption has always been that he's not just "a Hero of the Fifth Blight", but has a high position in the Fereldan branch of the order to go with it. Hero of Ferelden still signs their letter as Warden-Commander and with a romanced Alistair the whole thing gives off a really strong second-in-command vibes so like?? Clarel playing dictator with all southern Grey Wardens and immediately going after the only high ranking Warden capable of opposing her when he disagrees with her plan of action is absolutely insane. I know that times of crisis and all, but damn.
There are really few things in Dragon Age that make me go "Yeah, no. We gotta rewrite that", but this is definitely one of them. I'm not saying I'd get rid of the whole thing, but at least make Clarel's situation less... oh poor Warden-Commander was being manipulated. She was, but in my humble opinion if she didn't get all tyrannical and allowed any kind of discussion things would not get that far. Her fuck up goes beyond just poor judgement and inability to think critically under pressure.
