I’m a firm believer in the passive and small acts of activism.
You’re actively fighting capitalism by resting and taking a break. You’re actively fighting homophobia by wearing a rainbow pin to signify to others your allyship. You’re actively fighting climate change by air drying your hands after washing them. You’re actively fighting childism by letting a minor talk to you about how they’re doing. You’re actively fighting oppressive systems by simply existing.
There have always been others like you, and there always will be others like you. Your existence is rebellion. As long as you’re alive, conservatives and bigots have lost.
You’re a rebel. You’re a warrior. You’re a fighter. And you don’t even know it.

James Baldwin
Today we honor the life of James Baldwin (#Bi2) who was born on this day 100 years ago.
James Baldwin was an influential writer, essayist, playwright, and social critic whose work explored complex themes of race, sexuality, identity, and social justice in mid-20th century America. His profound insights and eloquent prose have left a lasting impact on American literature and civil rights movements. Here is a detailed history of Baldwin's life, influence, and achievements
Baldwin's writing often dealt with the intricacies of racial, sexual, and class distinctions in Western societies, most notably in America during the civil rights movement. His essays, collected in works like "Notes of a Native Son" (1955) and "Nobody Knows My Name" (1961), provided a powerful critique of American racial politics and explored themes of identity and belonging.
In 1956, Baldwin published "Giovanni's Room", a groundbreaking novel for its exploration of homosexuality. The novel, set in Paris, tells the story of an American man grappling with his sexual identity. It was a bold and risky move at a time when such topics were largely taboo.
Baldwin's influence extended beyond literature. He was an important figure in the LGBT rights movement, advocating for acceptance and understanding of diverse sexual identities. His insights into the intersections of race and sexuality were ahead of their time and continue to resonate today.

Jim Brown, the Cleveland Browns fullback who was acclaimed as one of the greatest players in pro football history, and who remained in the public eye as a Hollywood action hero and a civil rights activist, though his name was later tarnished by accusations of violent conduct against women, died on Thursday night at his home in Los Angeles. He was 87.

I ran away from home. I ran away from St. Louis, and then I ran away from the U.S.A because of that terror of discrimination, that horrible beast which paralyzes one's very soul and body.

Adieu to truly great trailblazer Harry Belafonte (1 March 1927 – 25 April 2023), who’s died aged 96. He was a singer (who popularized calypso music in the 50s), actor of stage and screen, outspoken civil rights activist (on close terms with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr) and – as this vintage pin-up amply demonstrates – a raving beauty.

A part of activism is knowing that it’s important to rest and okay to be tired, I think
#we’re fighting a daily war over our own rights. you’d have to be on 30 cups of coffee to NOT be tired#rest! take a break! log off of tumblr! click off of twitter! read a book and go outside and look at some paintings of dogs on your phone!#the fight is neverending. the horrors are unimaginable. but the rest is always welcoming#plus by resting you are technically fighting capitalism! so boom you’re being an activist even when you’re resting#because capitalism teaches us that it’s not okay to rest and that we must always be doing something productive#by resting you are actively fighting that#anti capitalism#activism#social activist#civil rights activist#feminisim#anarchism#anarchist#anarchy#anti facist#mental health#self care#self love#take a break

In 1903, one of America''''s most monumental literary works of African Americans "The Souls of Black Folks" was published by W.E.B Du Bois.
W.E.B. Du Bois was born on February 23, 1868, in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. Du Bois was a historian, civil rights activist, sociologist, author, editor, and Pan-Africanist. In 1909 he was also one of the founders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). On February 12, 1909, in response to a race riot in Springfield, Illinois, and the horrific acts that were being done against African Americans, a little over 50 white liberals and 7 African Americans met to discuss the racial crisis. Out of this meeting came the existence of the NAACP. Some of the African Americans in attendance were W. E. B. Du Bois, Ida B. Wells-Barnett and Mary Church Terrell. Among the white liberals at the meeting were Mary White Ovington and Oswald Garrison Villard, The organization continued the focus of the Niagara Movement which was the precursor to (NAACP).
