—I don't usually like things that have a raw consistency, for example: in food, in cases of roasts or meats, I feel that they have to be burned at the exact point, or that red or undercooked areas cannot be shown. The same thing happens with the nerves or veins of the same flesh.
—Places with a lot of people talking, or in awkward silence. (Regarding people talking, I have nothing against it, I just don't like the moments where they tend to raise their voice, or that may be on purpose)

The Oasis Retrospective Part 1: Definitely Maybe
Everyone has an album that just strikes them so deep to their core, so much that the entire time they listen to said album, they are unable to even stand up for a break to go take a piss. Maybe for you that’s The Zombies Odessey and Oracle, or Nirvana’s Nevermind, but for me at least, that is easily the debut LP, Definitely Maybe by Oasis. The album that started it all. The album that brought those working class kids from Manchester to the spotlight, and spawned thousands of tabloid headlines. The album that set the stage for one of the biggest bands of the 90’s, the best album they ever created.
This album not only kicks the door open with its first track, it sledgehammers through it and then tears down the entire house with it. “Rock ‘n’ Roll Star” really sets the stage for the rest of the album, with its larger than life guitar tones and Liam’s voice absolutely blasting through the mix. The lyrics about a man growing tired of the city and daydreaming about becoming a rockstar, really sets the tone for the rest of the working class anthems in the album. After spending the last two minutes just pounding away, the track is quickly followed up by “Shakermaker”. This one is an odd little tune, with lyrics about Mr. Clean and Liam’s very strange vocal delivery in some of the choruses. It still kicks major ass despite the rather stupid lyrics (a very common theme among many Oasis tunes) and Noel’s powerhouse guitars make the track an absolute classic. “Up in the Sky” is probably the worst track on the album, not for being bad but it’s mostly just boring. Noel and Bonehead’s guitars aren’t doing as much as the rest of the album, and it’s probably Liam’s least interesting vocal delivery on the album, though it's not totally lame. The melody is quite nice despite being very repetitive, and it has a very Beatles-esque feel overall.
“Bring it on Down” is an absolute barn burner of a track, with its lyrics about a disenfranchised man, who is deemed an outcast by society. It’s also the most punk influenced track on the album, with a very strong Sex Pistols vibe in the guitars. “Columbia” is an absolutely wild ride, which perfectly encapsulates the feeling of tripping balls. “Digsy’s Dinner” and “Supersonic” are probably the dumbest tracks on the album lyrically, but they are absolutely killer, “Supersonic” especially. “Supersonic” was what got them noticed in the British popular music scene, and it makes sense. This is an absolute monster of a debut single. The guitars sound incredible, Tony’s simple but effective drumming just blasts away the entire time, and contains Liam’s best vocal performance to date. The vocals on this track are a perfect encapsulation of what made him such an interesting vocalist in his day. “Cigarettes and Alcohol” is a fantastic working class anthem, despite the riff stolen directly from T. Rex. Liam once again shows his appreciation for pronouncing words incorrectly, I mean he just really can’t get a hold of the word “sunshine”.
“Live Forever”, is pure bliss from start to finish. Wonderfully optimistic lyrics, Tony’s simple drums, Liam’s snotty and youthful vocals, all topped off with a soaring guitar solo. Also, that fucking outro! It sounds so menacing and aggressive, but it still somehow has that tiny little bit of optimism that is ever present in Oasis’ early records. It’s no wonder that this is one of the most iconic songs in their discography. “Slide Away” is also one of the best songs on the album and maybe one of the best songs Noel ever wrote. It’s easily their best love song and it’s a contender for my all time favorite love song. It’s lyrics are absolutely beautiful, and shows Noel at his most sensitive and tender lyrically(not including b sides like “Talk Tonight” or “Half the World Away”). It soars with an unforgettable chorus and guitar solo, with another incredible outro to close the song. The lyrics “Don’t know, don’t care, all I know is you can take me there” get me teary eyed every single time I hear them.
It is then followed up by the closer “Married with Children”, a nice little subdued way to end the album, and is a good break from all the high octane fury found throughout most of the album. This album is Noel’s magnum opus and the best Oasis ever was, despite some very poor production in most of the album and Guigsy’s nearly non existent bass, they never got better than this. If I had to personally rate it I would, with my biases in my mind, I would give it a 10/10. Although my unbiased, non fanboy critic side would most likely give it an 8/10 due to the downright bad production. Do yourself a HUGE favor and listen to this album immediately, maybe it will inspire you to pick up a guitar and start a band of your own with your friends to try and be them. That’s what happened to me at least, although I haven’t sold out Wembley yet. I’ll have to get back to you on that one.

UCLA Radio’s Best of 2017 - Music and Genre Directors
This year, UCLA Radio’s music director and genre directors compiled a list of their favorite releases this past year. Take a peek and explore some of our favorite albums of this past year.
Alison Chi - Music Director
Tumblr media
1. SZA - Ctrl
I don’t know a single person who doesn’t like SZA’s sophomore album Ctrl. There are so few albums that can capture people’s attention these days - it’s all about the singles and never the album as a whole but something about Ctrl is cohesive from start to finish. The way each song weaves into each other is seamless and you’ll truly be rewarded if you sit down and listen to the album straight through. Is there even a single bad song on this album?
2. Giraffage - Too Real 3. Slowdive - Slowdive 4. Turnover - Good Nature 5. Land of Talk - Life After Youth 6. Cigarettes After Sex - Cigarettes After Sex 7. Julien Baker - Turn Out the Lights 8. Valerie June - The Order of Time 9. Slow Dancer - In A Mood 10. Mount Eerie - A Crow Looked at Me
Megan Hullander - Rock Genre Director
Tumblr media
1. King Gizzard & The Flying Wizard - Flying Microtonal Banana
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard’s Flying Microtonal Banana was the first in a series of five albums promised to be released in 2017 (one of which has still yet to come) including a concept album ridden with the drama of human and non-human emotions, a jazzy collaboration with Mild High Club, and an album given as a gift to fans - the rights of which are “owned” by all. Flying Microtonal Banana is unique in that the band customized their instruments in effort to find spaces between existing tones, or “microtones.” The album is named for one of these instruments which does, in fact, look quite similar to a banana.
2. Thee Oh Sees - Orc 3. The Brian Jonestown Massacre - Open Minds Now Close 4. Alex Cameron - Forced Witness 5. Ron Gallo - Temporary Slave 6. Ariel Pink - Dedicated to Bobby Jameson 7. Ty Segall - Sentimental Goblin 8. ORB - Naturality 9. Kikagaku Moyo - Stone Garden 10. Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile - Lotta Sea Lice
Gabe Cortina - Rock Genre Director

1. Limp Wrist - Facades
Featuring Martin from Los Crudos on vocals as well as members of Hail Mary, Devoid of Faith, By the Throat, and Kill the Man Who Questions, the versatility of Limp Wrist sound has never been more apparent. Identifying as queercore, the band has a fast hardcore sound and lyrical themes concerning gay identity politics. The mixing of album is something which also stood out to me, it’s able to polished without sounding over produced. Martin’s vocal style perfectly matches the killer riffs and speedy drums in both intensity and aggression. Halfway through this album, the band’s sound switches to a disco-ey almost dark-wave- techno sound which they pull of with perfection. This album is solid and I highly recommend it to both longtime fans of punk and people who are looking for an introduction to punk music alike.
2. Despise You / Coke Bust - Split LP 3. Gay Kiss - Rounded Down 4. Exit Unit - St 2017 5. Glue - S/T MLP 6. Lumpy and the Dumpers - Those Pickled Fuckers 7. Goolagoon / ACxDC - Split 8. Burnout - West Coast Tour 2017 CS 9. Sex Prisoner / Harm Done - Split 10. Meth Leppard - Discography 2015-2017

1. Beach House - B-Sides and Rarities
This compilation happened to be release on a day where I had only gotten around an hour of sleep the night before, and I cried within one minute of the first track. It’s Beach House at their most dreamy, their most blaring, their most haunting. Old tracks with new renditions and fresh ones meld into something spellbinding that doesn’t require the logistical unity of a formal album. B-Sides and Rarities has been on a weekly rotation for me for the entire second half of 2017, and probably for the entirety of 2018, unless they release something else for me to cry to during my morning routine.
2. Florist - If Blue Could Be Happiness 3. High Bloom - Implied Sun 4. Alvvays - Antisocialites 5. The Drums - Abysmal Thoughts 6. Slowdive - Slowdive 7. Steve Lacy - Steve Lacy’s Demo 8. You’ll Never Get to Heaven - Images 9. Pedro Infante - Cien años... pensando en ti 10. Big Thief - Capacity
Alana Myers - Pop Genre Director

1. Wolf Alice - Visions Of A Life
Looking back at this past September, I remember sitting in my apartment late at night, counting down until midnight when Wolf Alice’s second record Visions of a Life would be released. I haven’t ever heard anything quite like Visions of a Life before, and I think the reason it resonates so much with me is the way it perfectly encompasses the feelings that come with the uncertainty of young adulthood, and the feelings of life in general - love, anger, sadness, extreme joy, and everything in between. The album digs itself into darkness, but at its core, lies a piece of work that is ambitious, honest, and a solid listen from start to finish.
2. MUNA - About U 3. Tei Shi - Crawl Space 4. Declan McKenna - What Do You Think About the Car? 5. Stormzy - Gang Signs & Prayer 6. Will Joseph Cook - Sweet Dreamer 7. HAIM - Something to Tell You 8. Lorde - Melodrama 9. Paramore - After Laughter 10. Circa Waves - Different Creatures
Alex Saakyan - Pop Genre Director
Tumblr media
1. Lana Del Rey - Lust For Life
With an album cover that graces a smile, cheek to cheek of Lana Del Rey, it is no surprise as to why this record has been nicknamed as Del Rey’s first ‘happy album.’ Retiring from the ‘sad girl’ aesthetic of her previous records, Del Rey delivers an optimistic and authentic approach to her music. With tracks like ‘When the World Was at War’ and ‘God Bless America’ we see Del Rey take a more honest approach from her Americana aesthetic as she speaks of the hard times people in this country face. With tracks like ‘Get Free’ she delivers her mission statement: “Finally, I’m crossing the threshold/From the ordinary world/To the reveal of my heart,” She’s honest, she’s free, with a much optimism and a lust for life.
2. Kendrick Lamar - DAMN. 3. Lorde - Melodrama 4. Kelela - Take Me Apart 5. Majid Jordan - The Space Between 6. Harry Styles - Harry Styles 7. Calvin Harris - Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 8. Tyler, the Creator - Flower Boy 9. Dua Lipa - Blow Your Mind 10. Kesha - Rainbow
Christian Wright - World Genre Director
Tumblr media
1. Jay Som - Everybody Works
Melina Duterte’s sophomore album is a bedroom production jewel. Every song, incredibly cohesive as a whole, traverses the beautifully lush sonic worlds her mind seemingly conjures up. That’s not to say the ten tracks that span Everybody Works are simple happenstances that fall together nicely; they definitely sound like labors of love. Rather her voice, certain of itself, transmits to the listener so powerfully, making sense out of all the disorder that comes with self-doubt and personal struggle. “Won’t forget to climb,” she sings on E.W’s. final track, “For Light,” beautifully steering the qualms of trying to make it in this world.
2. Nikolas Escudero - Synthesis 3. Haley Heynderickx - Unpeeled (Live) 4. Fleet Foxes - Crack-Up 5. Bedouine - Beduoine 6. Japanese Breakfast - Soft Sounds from Another Planet 7. Lomelda - Thx 8. Hand Habits - Wildly Idle (Humble Before the void) 9. Kevin Morby - City Music 10. Wednesday Campanella - Superman
Ethan Lee - Jazz Genre Director
Tumblr media
1. Nick Hakim - Green Twins
Nick Hakim blurs the line between psychedelic, soul, funk, rock, and jazz with his debut album, Green Twins. With lush melodies to command his songs and a spacey approach to recording production, Hakim creates his own unique sound and challenges the notions and implications of a music genre.  With a brand of sound that emulates Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Hakim's soundscape fills in colorful textures with his diverse instrumentation on top of steady, pulse-like rhythms.  From spacey, reflective post-R&B rock songs like "Bet She Looks Like You" to jazzy, rhythmic pulses in "Miss Chew" and slow, soulful ballads like "Needy Bees," Green Twins has just about everything you need in a debut album from an artist as complex as Nick Hakim.
2. Tyler the Creator - Flower Boy 3. Kamasi Washington - Harmony of Difference 4. Rex Orange County - Apricot Princess 5. Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah - Diaspora 6. Moses Sumney - Aromanticism 7. Steve Lacy - Steve Lacy’s Demo 8. Brockhampton - Saturation II 9. Smino - blkswn 10. Antonio Sanchez - Bad Hombre
Mark Edmonds - Electronic Genre Director
Tumblr media
1. Moon Boots - First Landing
First Landing is Moon Boots' debut album. Moon Boots manages a deep overtone with techy-melodies. 'Never Get to You' is a standout track that will light up any dance floor or pool party.
2. Rezz - Mass Manipulation 3. Oliver - Full Circle 4. Various Artists - Anjunadeep Vol. 9 5. Illenium - Awake 6. Giraffage - Too Real 7. Four Tet - New Energy 8. Odesza - A Moment Apart 9. Cosmic Gate - Materia Chapter.Two 10. Bicep - Bicep
Beliz Urkmez - Electronic Genre Director
Tumblr media
1. Lorde - Melodrama
For me, Lorde's music means emotion in its purest, most honest form. Her sophomore album, Melodrama, captures her youth, her growth, her path to becoming a woman of her own and loving herself and all the ephemeral experiences in between. Mastering her craft, Lorde finds a cohesion between her atmospheric synths, harmonies, beats and the bittersweet wisdom in her lyrics. Especially in "Liability," a beautiful piano-ballad where she sings, "I understand, I'm a liability/ Get you wild, make you leave/ I'm a little much for everyone." Lorde is truly one of a kind and Melodrama proves she is one of the best artists today.
2. Gorillaz - Humanz 3. London Grammar - Truth Is a Beautiful Thing 4. HAIM - Something to Tell You 5. Alexandra Savior - Belladonna of Sadness 6. Temples - Volcano 7. Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds - Who Built the Moon? 8. Wolf Alice - Visions of a Life 9. Cigarettes After Sex - Cigarettes After Sex 10. Mura Masa - Mura Masa
Alex Ivanova - Folk/Singer-Songwriter Genre Director
Tumblr media
1. Kiran Leonard - Derevaun Seraun
This is probably the most sonically beautiful album I’ve listened to in years. 22-year-old Kiran Leonard blends voice, piano, and string trio into an album with each movement representing a different piece of literature, seeing as the album was written to celebrate the re-opening of Manchester’s Central Library. The album is intensely personal, and raw, as Leonard’s voice is in the spotlight, accompanied by mournful accompaniment. I recommend this album endlessly.
2. The Spirit of the Beehive - pleasure suck 3. Jay Som - Everybody Works 4. Joan of Arc - He’s Got the Whole This Land Is Your Land in His Hands 5. Kindling - Hush 6. Синекдоха Монток - MMXVII (Parts 1 & 2) 7. Phoebe Bridgers - Stranger in the Alps 8. Sidney Gish - Ed Buys Houses 9. Tagubu & Klimperei - I Don't Remember The First Time  10. Nnamdi Ogbonnaya - DROOL

Brooklyn, NY -- A band that I’ve been so happy to hear new music from is Cigarettes After Sex. I first heard their track “Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You Baby” a couple months ago and since then I’ve been such a fan of their new single. They recently shared their newest track “Apocalypse” which is taken off of their upcoming S/T debut LP. With “Apocalypse”, we still get Cigarettes After Sex’s dreamy ambient pop sound but there’s definitely a light somberness to this track that I love. You can really hear the vocals on this one too and the instrumentation is more of a backdrop to help ease the vibe.

Jon ALi Presents: The Top 50 Albums Of 2018!
My beautiful music lovers: We have (almost) reached the end of 2018!
This year proved once again to be a true test to the human psychique with the mess that is our current Presidential reality – but, luckily, in the midst of life’s many expected ups and downs this year, there was (thankfully) a ton of great music to help distract, heal and lift us up.
First up, I’m counting down my Top 50 Albums of the 2018! As per usual, this list was the quickest to make because I find it easier to rank my love for an album based on if I can get through the whole thing from start to finish without banging my head against a wall (repeatedly). WITH THAT SAID: That doesn’t necessarily mean I find album #19 any more or less tolerable than the ones before or after it so please save your trolling for someone who actually cares. The list reflects my personal taste, you know the person the blog is named after. I love music. You love music. We love music!
K, without further ado, here’s the list:
50. Fischerspooner – Sir 49. Hayley Kiyoko – Expectations 48. Teyana Taylor – K.T.S.E. 47. Ella Mai – Ella Mai 46. Rita Ora – Phoenix 45. Shawn Mendes – Shawn Mendes 44. Little Mix – LM5 43. Rae Morris – Someone Out There 42. Paloma Faith – The Architect 41. Travis Scott – Astroworld 40. Sofi Tukker – Treehouse 39. J Balvin – Vibras 38. Empress Of – Us 37. Blood Orange – Negro Swan 36. CHVRCHES – Love is Dead 35. Nicki Minaj – Queen 34. Jess Glynne – Always In Between 33. The Aces – When My Heart Felt Volcanic 32. The 1975 – A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships 31. Twin Shadow – Caer 30. Toni Braxton – Sex & Cigarettes 29. Florence and the Machine – High as Hope 28. Lily Allen – No Shame 27. The Carters – Everything Is Love 26. Tinashe – Joyride 25. Tumblr media
10. Janelle Monáe – Dirty Computer
2013’s The Electric Lady – Janelle‘s sophomore effort – saw this multi-talented diva hone in on the sound she displayed on her debut The ArchAndroid, showcasing a playful-yet-wise mix of pop, funk and soul that rocked our world. Dirty Computer is a more versatile and ambitious move: an addictive master class in futurist freedom and pride, packed with a whole lot of substance, enlightenment and soul. Here Janelle continues to paint and play with all the different colors in her wonderful artistry. The triumphs outweigh her constraints of not wanting to miss out on another chance to enlighten. She’s not afraid of being herself, and the fact that she only continues to refine within that is what makes Janelle such a necessary presence in today’s musical landscape. Highlights: “Take A Byte,” “Screwed (feat. Zoë Kravitz),” “Django Jane,” “Pynk (feat. Grimes),” “Make Me Feel” and “I Like That.”
Tumblr media
9. Years & Years – Palo Santo
On the follow-up to their fantastic 2015 debut, Years & Years – comprised of lead singer Olly Alexander, bassist Mikey Goldsworthy and synth player Emre Turkmen – returns badder, more unfiltered and more confident than ever before. Olly and crew are bleeding into each and every one of these songs, at times menacing, confessional and aggressive like on “Sanctify” and “All For You,” where they break free from a broken relationship with edge and a liberated attitude. Palo Santo pushes Years & Years to new and mature heights while refining their brand of pop excellence and increasing its production value. Highlights: “Sanctify,” “All For You,” “Karma,” “Hypnotised,” “If You’re Over Me” and “Palo Santo.”
Tumblr media
8. Mariah Carey – Caution
From start to finish, Mariah‘s fifteenth studio album, Caution, creates a great “Portrait of where the legacy of Mimi‘s career has been and where it is now. There’s a certain maturity in her tight vision that we haven’t seen in recent efforts like Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel and The Elusive Chanteuse; thematically, Caution feels like a return to form. What really keeps the record feeling cohesive and modern is the lyrical content and sleek production – and all it took was 10 tracks. It’s the perfect example of quality over quantity. Caution is undeniably one of Mariah’s finest moments – her tightest, strongest and most cohesive effort since The Emancipation of Mimi. Highlights: “GTFO,” “Caution,” “A No No,” “The Distance,” “Giving Me Life,” “8th Grade” and “Portrait.”
Tumblr media
7. Tove Styrke – Sway
I first noticed Swedish songstress Tove Styrke nearly four years ago when she released her dynamic, well-received sophomore album Kiddo. It’s no surprise to see how she has developed into a major international force since those early days. Her third studio LP Sway is a sure sign of her development as an artist: a restrained, sophisticated and fresh body of work showcasing her gorgeous angelic voice across an array of simple electronic arrangements, acoustic layers, heavenly harmonies and huge pop choruses. She may not have made the biggest noise this year, but she certainly has proven herself to be a more than worthy addition to the Swedish elite we have all come to revere. Highlights: “Say My Name,” “Mistakes,” “On the Low,” “Changed My Mind” and “On A Level.”
Tumblr media
6. Christine and the Queens – Chris
The sophomore slump can sometimes be nearly impossible to avoid, but with Chris, Héloïse Letissier managed to deliver a more than worthy follow-up to her critically acclaimed debut, Chaleur Humaine – which introduced her as a heartfelt, articulate queer artist and earned her a thriving following of listeners who felt she was singing directly to — and for — them. This time around, the French diva took on a bigger and dare I say “more accessible” approach, all while building upon her many strengths. The LP is a record brimming with ’80’s-esque grooves, intimate electronica, and a whole lot of soul baring. Christine is more confident than ever here, challenging both herself and her audience. An effortlessly eloquent, cool and intelligent listen from start to finish. She is the chameleon-like artist we deserve today! Highlights: “Girlfriend (feat. Dâm-Funk),” “Doesn’t matter,” “5 dollars,” “Damn (what must do a woman do)” and “Feel so good.”
Tumblr media
5. Robyn – Honey
While it may not have been what everyone hoped it would be, Robyn‘s first solo album in eight years proved to be yet another masterpiece from the Swedish Queen – a subtle, more restrained serve from a woman who has always thrived by rejecting pop music standards throughout her career. Honey is a cohesive collection of sophisticated and deeply emotional dance songs that come packed with slick melodies and intelligently written lyricism, bridging her previous work and with the rest of Honey‘s flowing numbers, which draw on the things that gave her the strength to recover during grief: her longtime friend and collaborator, producer Christian Falk, died from pancreatic cancer in 2014, and she separated from her partner, photographer Max Vitali (they have reunited since). Robyn continues to make the trends instead of following them, and with Honey, she enters the next phase in her legacy with some of her most emotionally satisfying and musically innovative music yet. Highlights: “Missing U,” “Human Being (feat. Zhala),” “Because It’s in the Music,” “Honey” and “Between the Lines.”
Tumblr media
4. Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper – A Star Is Born: The Soundtrack
If you’d told me I’d be completely obsessing over a soundtrack a year ago, I’d probably laugh in your face. But lo and behold, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper‘s spectacular A Star Is Born, a film filled with full-fledged SONGS, all of which serve the story. Strip out the unnecessary dialogue interludes and the plot of A Star Is Born is still evident, as the music moves from the grungy Americana of Bradley‘s character, through his classic-feeling duets with Gaga, toward her cookie-cutter “Ally” pop, and then culminating with “I’ll Never Love Again,” the beautifully heartbreaking song where the two estranged lovers reunite. Each of these phases is expertly executed, particularly on the now staple-ballad “Shallow” where their sensibilities and chemistry are fused powerfully – I’m still not over it. All the songs just make sense to the narrative and on their own, and as a result, hold together well and amount to the soundtrack of the year. It’s a true gift to us all. Highlights: “Shallow,” “Music to My Eyes,” “Always Remember Us This Way,” “Heal Me,” “I Don’t Know What Love Is,” and “I’ll Never Love Again.”
Tumblr media
3. Lykke Li – so sad so sexy
In today’s current state of high-gloss pop-stars, who are all about taking things to the next level, there is something about hearing someone like Swedish talent Lykke Li going slightly left with her sound that is very refreshing. This time around, she took on a more ambitious sound, enlisting husband Jeff Bhasker, T-Minus, DJ Dahi, Illangelo, Emile Haynie, Jonny Coffer, Kid Harpoon and Rostam Batmanglij, among others to complement her strengths. The LP is a record brimming with dark trap grooves, intimate electronica, and an unusual blend of pop and R&B. But, don’t get it twisted: No matter how new the sound may be for her, the Lykke Li heard on so sad so sexy is still a fearless and powerful one. In fact, she’s reached a whole new level of self-awareness and the lyrical craftsmanship, yeah, it’s better than it’s ever been. Are you really surprised though? Highlights: “hard rain,” “deep end,” “last piece,” “sex money feelings die” and “bad woman.”
Tumblr media
2. Troye Sivan – Bloom
On the follow-up to his fantastic 2015 debut, Troye Sivan returns liberated, more unfiltered and more self-assured than ever before. As displayed on the cover art and promotional images for the LP – where Troye is seen flaunting his queerness front and center – his guards are completely down and his insecurities are completely visible for anyone willing to look and listen beyond the sexuality. Bloom is a gorgeous, intimate, soft, tender, sensual and supremely crafted listen from start to finish. An album for steamy, unfiltered romping. The shift is evident, Troye is here to stay. Bloom is it. The End. Highlights: “Seventeen,” “My My My!,” “The Good Side,” “Bloom,” “Dance to This (feat. Ariana Grande)” and “Lucky Strike.”
Tumblr media
1. Kacey Musgraves – Golden Hour
I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve totally been sleeping on Kacey Musgraves all these years. Thankfully, I’ve woken the fuck up and realized what I was missing all this time. Like most of Kacey‘s back catalog, her fourth major label LP Golden Hour revolves around some expected lyrical themes: boys, love, family, independence and varying levels of self-assurance, sadness, isolation and lust. But Golden Hour strives as a much bigger deal than anything she’s ever done before, it’s her “official” transition into a genuine mainstream pop player. It’s a honest, slow-burning and an extremely therapeutic body of work, in which Kacey‘s delivery is quietly confident throughout, blooming at its own leisurely strut, swaying between casual confessionals and songs about love. The very sound of Golden Hour is warm and enveloping, kind of like a setting sun – but the album sticks with you because the songs are so smart, clever and sweetly blissful. There are no mistakes on this album. Everything works and everything is perfection. Kacey Musgraves has knocked it out of the park with this effort and has perhaps cured my anxiety forever (or at very least, provided the perfect antidote). Highlights: “Slow Burn,” “Butterflies,” “Oh, What a World,” “Love Is a Wild Thing,” “Happy & Sad,” “High Horse” and “Rainbow.”
Honorable Mentions: Zayn – Icarus Falls, Rhye – Blood, Emily Warren – Quiet Your Mind, leuan – Over the Graden Wall, Lauv – I met you when I was 18, Ralph – A Good Girl, Bebe Rexha – Expectations, Clean Bandit – What Is Love?, Sabrina Carpenter – Singular Act I
