Breakfast is a packet of Chwee Kueh (水粿) bundled up in food wrapper. It is a type of steamed rice cake originating in Teochew cuisine that is served with preserved radish and is a popular breakfast item in Singapore.
Tumblr media
By itself the Steamed Rice Cakes are almost tasteless on their own as it is made of rice flour and water then steamed. So they are eaten with savoury sweet diced preserved radish and served with chilli sauce or chilli paste as shown below.

King Grouper Fish Soup
Chwee Kueh - from Albert Hawker Centre. It's one of the best. It's tasty and the cai po is chopped small enough.

Mother Talks to 11-Year-Old Self at Bedok Hawker Centre
There is a stall here that is as old as you. It has seen how the concrete rises and falls. An ice palace built and torn apart with the same magic. Yet, they’ve stayed, choosing to dig scoops and scoops of Chwee Kueh from thin metal moulds like scooping ice cream out of an endless vat. Water cakes, these white jiggly delights translate to. You imagine them as boats floating in chili oil, the way…

My piece from this morning’s I Jio You Sketchwalk at Tiong Bahru. Stressful sketching with cameras looming over one’s shoulders; so anyhow whacked. 😅 This little township will always have a special place in my heart, ‘cos I’d roamed these streets with my mom as well as in a bike with my childhood friends for years as a kid. The Tiong Bahru Market used to, and still does, serve up some of the best versions of local fares like Lor Mee, Char Kway Tiao, Chwee Kueh, etc. But it is her nostalgic Art Deco charm that really steals my heart. 🥰❤️ *TWSBI 580RBT FP, Noodler’s Sepia Ink, Daniel Smith Artist Watercolors, Arches 300gsm hot-pressed watercolor paper sketchbook (homemade) #usksg #usk #urbansketchers #urbansketching #sketchwalk #ijioyou #tiongbahru #tiongbahrumarket #singapore (at Tiong Bahru Singapore) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChehujWPY8A/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

大家好! Although the colleague is back from months of medical leave, it will take her a few weeks to settle in. So I still feel drained and look forward to the long weekend at the end of the month. Grace and Douglas ensure I receive plenty of nourishment by brewing tonic soups. This rich and flavourful 粉葛莲藕淮山汤 (arrowroot, lotus root and Chinese yam pork soup) was just what I needed. YUM.
Tumblr media
Every crisis exposes our SWOT. Covid and the global inflation exposed plenty for our country to work on. I'm glad to see that the government is employing advanced technology to enhance our food security. This, in addition to improving public health, strengthens our nation's response to tough times in future. Hopefully modern automation helps us to be less vulnerable to labour shortages too.
youtube
Onto food, in all fairness, not all brunch places are lousy. I came across a pretty decent one, although if I must choose during this global inflation, my dollar goes towards good value. My catch up brunch meal - not including K's - cost over $20 after GST and the ++ whatever. Considering a local lunch with steamed fish, 2 veggies and rice priced at $7.60 is healthier and offers more nutritional benefits, I'll choose local. I'm not the only one who thinks this way.
The emphasis on nutrition vs frivolous spending on trace amounts of additional health benefits is precisely the reason relatives from the US who visited regularly before the pandemic wish our local cuisine is more widely available there. Fad diets are less common here, although some fanatics have embarked on keto, healthy food bowls, acai blahblahblah. The rest of us? Well, we go for balanced meals with veggies, meat/fish/seafood/eggs/tofu and rice. That's it.
youtube
youtube
I don't profess to know what the global wellness scene is like intimately. Suffice to say, I don't insist on salmon being the healthiest fish there is the same way I don't rely on vegan diets, premium oils or gourmet bread to maintain a moderately healthy lifestyle. During this global inflation and possible recession, going back to the very basics of nourishment doesn't sound like a bad thing, hey? After all, I don't wanna be fleeced during this period, do you? 下次见!
