118 The ocean blessing
O Thou who pervadest the depths,
Imprint on us Thy gracious blessing,
Carry us over the surface of the sea,
Carry us safely to a haven of peace,
Bless our boatmen and our boat,
Bless our anchors and our oars,
Each stay and halyard and traveller,
Our mainsails to our tall masts
Keep, O King of the elements, in their place
That we may return home in peace;
I myself will sit down at the helm,
It is Lir’s own Son who will give me guidance,
As He gave to Bran mac Febail
What time he set stay to sails.
Boínn, Bríd, Oghma,
Lugh, Nuada, an Mórrígan,
an Dagda of love,
Pour ye down from above the dew
That would make our faith to grow,
Establish ye us in the Rock of rocks,
In every law that love exhibits,
That we may reach the land of glory,
Where peace and love and mercy reign,
All vouchsafed to us through grace;
Never shall the canker worm get near us,
We shall there be safe for ever,
We shall not be in the bonds of death
Though we are of the seed of Caorthann and Fearn.
On the Feast Day of Cónocht an Fómhair, the Feast Day of Samhain,
The Feast Day of Grianstad an Gheimhridh, sun of mercy,
The Feast Day of Bríd, day of my choice,
Cast ye the serpent into the ocean,
So that the sea may swallow her up;
On the Feast Day of Cónocht an Earraigh, day of power,
Reveal to us the storm from the north,
Quell its wrath and blunt its fury,
Lessen its fierceness, kill its cold.
On the Day of Hogmanay on high,
Subdue to us the crest of the waves,
On Lá Bealtaine give us the dew,
On Grianstad an tSamhraidh the gentle wind,
The Day of Lugh the great of fame,
Ward off us the storm from the west;
Each day and night, storm and calm,
Be Thou with us, O Chief of chiefs,
Be Thou Thyself to us a compass-chart,
Be Thine hand on the helm of our rudder,
Thine own hand, Thou God of the elements,
Early and late as is becoming,
Early and late as is becoming.

i love merry crisis, it really makes me homesick for sg. i don’t live there anymore but the years i spent there were some of my favourites, definitely the best city i’ve lived in imo! i’m visiting with my mum in a couple of weeks and we’re both so excited to go back! i’m especially looking forward to the food tbh, nothing hits quite like spending 10 dollars at a food court and eating the best noodles of your entire damn life ya know? any recommendations for places to eat?
This really warms my heart <3 Honestly, I think SG is a really amazing city too—chill for a city (because it’s also a country! very few cities have such large nature reserves/laid-back neighbourhoods/industrial areas etc.) but as a whole country, well... it’s kinda small.
You’re absolutely right though the food is top-tier.
SG food recs under the cut! But if some are a little “duh” because you’ve lived here before, do excuse me!! I’ve only included the ones I actually love / eat at often, cause yeah I’m sure you’re more than familiar with the general raved about places. And feel free to leave your recs in my inbox too! I could always do with more places to try out :)
Overall fave: Blue ginger at Tanjong Pagar is my fave (I just love Peranakan food in general)
Breakfast fave: Yakun kaya toast (yes, sorry, I just had to. The one at 18 china street esp!)
Dessert fave: Ah chew dessert or Mei heong yuen are both great for tang yuan (glutinous rice balls) in ginger soup. (They also have shaved ice but I’m a tang yuan person through and through.)
My fave hawker centres: Amoy street hawker centre at lunch-time (it’s not so big that it boggles the mind, like some in chinatown, and it also is close to nice cafes for an after-lunch snack. I work near there so I’m a bit biased, but I do love the grandma ban mee/lei cha/vietnamese food there.) Lau Pa Sat or Zion Road at night. (The former is in a cool building but is a little ‘touristy’, Zion road is set by a canal so it feels airy and is a nice experience at night, cause you can buy beer and sit looking at the canal. My fave there is spicy dumplings.)
If you like peppery soup: Ya Hua bak kut teh for the more laid-back neighbourhood experience, Song fa bak kit teh for the nicest soup but slightly more hectic commercial feel
If you like prata: Casuarina curry always hits the spot after a long forest walk in the central catchment area.
If you want the classic chilli crab/black pepper crab experience: Chuan Kee seafood for the laid-back neighbourhood feel, Jumbo seafood for the classic taste (again, pretty commercial now)
If you want my weird underrated/obscure comfort food: Ban mian (dough noodles)/Mee Hoon kuey (dough shreds) from Blk 161 Bukit Merah Central Coffee Shop.
If you want the best steamed fish with lime chilli sauce: OK, admittedly niche, and also technically a Thai place, but the sauce is pretty similar to what my grandma makes, hokkien/peranakan style. The fish is super fresh and the sauce is so hot it bubbles. Monkey Thai seafood in Mei Ling St. hawker centre.
Phew, that got long 🫣 That’s what you get for asking a Singaporean about food, I guess. Sorry for bombarding you, and feel free to leave more messages in my inbox, I love talking about food! Hope you enjoy your time back in SG! :)

Love is sweet
"My biggest mistake was that I didn't realize how much you loved me. Just as I can forget about everything and risk everything to protect you, you can do the same to protect me."
E invece no, mi hanno stupita. Ashes of love guarda e impara.

(Pictures included as proof that I'm not talking out of my ass)
A little bit of background on myself: I started training in martial arts 20 years ago at the age of 6. I've trained in Kajukenbo, Eskrima, and Boxing. Dabbled in Wing Chun, Jeet Kune Do, Muay Thai, and BJJ. I've also been a huge fan of the ATLA franchise since its original airing and I'm so grateful for all of the new fans that get to enjoy it.
So, with that out of the way, I want to discuss how Bending as a Martial Art works in the series. The Avatar is destined to master all 4 elements, but the issue that comes from that is something that most martial artists understand: the same martial art isn't the same everywhere you go. I'm going to use Kajukenbo as an example. Established in 1947, which is relatively young for a martial art, many different expressions of the style have developed in the 73 years since its birth. You have the different branches like Fi Kuen, Won Hop Kuen Do, Tum Pai, and Chuan Fa. All of them are Kajukenbo, but focus on different aspects of it.
What I'm getting at is that, in the series, there must be different systems of every form of bending. Toph is the best example of this. We also see it in Iroh, Katara, Azula, Pro Bending (Most prominently), and Korra among others that I may be blanking on at the moment. They are all masters of their style, excluding pro benders, but is their style the definitive style? Which type of Fire/Earth/Water was Aang supposed to learn? I would assume the traditional method from the source. Badgermoles, the Moon, and the Dragons. We can assume that him growing up the very traditional manner of the Air Nomads that his Airbending style is pure.
Does any system suffice so long as they abide by the traditional methodologies taught by the original benders? What about a hybrid style that teaches one style of bending but with inspiration from another? It's bound to happen, especially later on when people from different nations were living together and sharing cultures.
