Dad Pelops is fun, and I am sure he loved being a dad to Atreus. Up to a point. The boiling of people isn't okay nor plotting to murder your siblings. Regardless wanted to shine more on Chrysippus and Pelops.

Pelops chases after his son
Probably made by Darius Painter, 330 BC said to be Chrysippos being kidnapped by Laius and most likely pelops chasing them. Dunno why he's wearing Asian stuff, tho.
Just wanted to post this image after seeing some people... defend Laius... existence is pain, and I am the handlebar. There's also something so cruel and sad about Pelops actually watching his child be taken and running after them.
its the same scene here, too (Volute Krater image, 320 BC for gods sake I cant fine the actual object tho cuz everything else is paywalled,)

Now that I'm thinking about it... @sarafangirlart talked a lot about how Perseus and Pelops might have been good friends, given the fact that most of Perseus' sons ended up marrying most of Pelops' daughters. And we also know that Chrysippus got kidnapped by Prince Laius of Thebes, which caused Pelops to recover him by force, and some sources directly state that he started a war against Thebes because of this:
Pseudo-Hyginus, Fabulae 85 (trans. Grant) (Roman mythographer C2nd A.D.) : "Laius, son of Labdacus, carried of Chrysippus, illegitimate son of Pelops, at the Nemean Games because of his exceeding beauty. Pelops made war and recovered him. At the instigation of their mother Hippodamia, Atreus and Thyestes killed him. When Pelops blamed Hippodamia, she killed herself."
So... what if Pelops made an alliance with Perseus and was something like: "Hey man, can I please borrow some of your soldiers n' stuff 'cause apparently this guy named Laius wants to make pederasty a thing in Thebes by exmplifying it on my son, you know?" to which Perseus replied with: "Yeah, man! Sure thi- Wait, did you just say pederasty?!"
Are there any sources supporting this interpretation? Nope! Would it make thematical sense and add more nuance to the future disputes between Argos and Thebes such as Seven Against Thebes? Well, yeah...

Marriage in Ancient Greece was scary because what if he promised me that he loved me the most he loved any woman but favored the children of the women he cheated on me with while barely loving and neglecting all the children I gave him

Honestly, the fact that Pelops cheated on Hippodamia becomes even more frustrating when you remember that this guy had a missing shoulder, and probably a slightly disfigured body (or at least covered in scars) ever since *that* incident. Ancient greeks generally had ableistic views so Hippodamia was perhaps one of the very first women from his life who accepted his appearence.
Yeah fr and she probably wouldn’t care about him sleeping around if he didn’t have children with other women. It’s also made worse by the fact Pelops loved Chrysippus more than her children and would’ve let him inherit the throne to Pisa her HOMELAND.

Pelops
Pelops was a Greek hero and king of Pisa in Greek mythology. As the son of Tantalus, he was a member of the cursed House of Atreus, and was cruelly sacrificed by his father in a twisted way to test the gods – an act that backfired and led to Tantalus' eternal punishment.
The myths most commonly associated with Pelops include the disastrous feast with the gods in which he was killed and placed in a stew by his father and his quest to win the hand of Princess Hippodamia. He is considered a great Greek hero and was admired by the Greeks, with the Achaeans claiming him as their ancestor.
Family
Pelops was the son of Tantalus and the nymph Dione (some sources list his mother as Clytia or Euryanassa) and the grandson of Zeus and Atlas. He was the father of several sons and daughters, including Atreus, Thyestes, Dias, Corinthus, Cleon, Aelius, Nicippe, Archippe, and Eurydice with his wife Hippodamia, and the father of Chrysippus with either the nymph Axioche or Danais.

Damn
We all know that parents have a favorite child, but you don't need to be so obvious even if Atreus and Thyestes aren't exactly the best kids

What greek myth wouldn't be perfect without tragedy? Imagine going to war for your son whom was kidnapped. To win. To finally get to go home but... Your wife ends up killing him. Now for those who don't know Chrysippus is not Hippodamia's son. Pelops did in fact have an affair with a river nymph. I think that would piss anyone off. But instead of disowning, Pelops did infact raise Chrys. Then the kidnapping happened. And when he was saved, Hippodamia killed him. (Some instances have Atreus and Thyestes kill him) She tries to frame Prince Laios (who did kidnap Chrys) but Chrys survives long enough to tell his father what happened. Despite it all, Pelops doesn't kill her. She ends up running away and well. Dies.
Anyway I wanted to play with the scene cause Pelops goes through A LOT of people he cares about dying. His brother, sister and her children, we don't know about his mother but I assume. He lives through Chrys dying and his grandchildren being boiled and eaten. Like hoo man.
#gruvu's art#so many layers to the story good lord#IT had to be horrible#Pelops#greek mythology#There is a decent amount about pelops and hippodamia and its complex to me#Chrysippus#greek myth#tagamemnon#I do think he cared for her#but I don't think she could anymore to a point#and it's so odd she was afraid of his anger? So many layers here#And he never remarries#pelops just decides to rule a kingdom and be poseidon's lover for the rest of his life#tw death

Theseus has a history of kidnapping children.
"Chrysippus, son of Pelops, whom Theseus stole from the games" "Theseus, son of Aegeus and Aethra, daughter of Pittheus, along with Pirithous, son of Ixion, carried off the maiden Helen" people always forget that theseus kidnapped MULTIPLE children.
These two events are BOTH from Hyginus, Fabulae, hell Chrysippus is kidnapped TWICE in his work. that's so fucked up, this kid gets all the wrong attention... he and helen and Miletus should make a support group.

Apparently Laios isn't the only one who kidnapped Chrysippus...
Hyginus, Fabulae:
"YOUTHS WHO WERE MOST HANDSOME: Adonis, son of Cinyras and Smyrna, whom Venus loved. Endymion, son of Aetolus, whom Luna loved. Ganymede, son of Erichthonius, whom Jove loved. Hyacinthus, son of Oibalus, whom Apollo loved. Narcissus, son of the river Cephisus, who loved himself. Atlantius, son of Mercury and Venus, who is called Hermaphroditus. Hylas, son of Theodamas, whom Hercules loved. Chrysippus, son of Pelops, whom Theseus stole from the games."
#Kinda reminds me of the way he kidnapped Helen back when she was little.#Perseus 🤝 Pelops: Having a descendant kidnapped by Theseus.#greek mythology#chrysippus#theseus#pelops#ramblings

So there is this thing I do where I’d roam around on Wikipedia finding out cool Greek mythology facts and I stumbled upon Chrysippus, his tragic story really touched me and I was disappointed to find out that Euripides made a play about him that is now lost. One thing that especially stood out to me is this pottery art depicting Chrysippus with a woman named Zeuxo. Who is she? What is she to him? Is she the oceanid Zeuxo? Or a mortal woman who happens to share her name? There is not a single surviving source that tells us. I’ve drawn Zeuxo before so I decided to draw her again.

Chrysippus, Fragments from the Passions 2
That is why it is not off the mark to say, as some people do, that a passion of the soul is an unnatural motion, as is the case with fear and desire and things like that; for all such motions and conditions are disobedient to reason and reject it.
And so we say that such people are irrationally moved, not as though they make a bad calculation, which would be the sense opposite to "reasonably", but rather in the sense of a rejection of reason. . . .
That is what such conditions are like, uncontrolled, as though they were not masters of themselves but were carried away in the way that those who run strenuously are swept away and cannot control their motion.
But those who move according to reason, as though it were their leader, and steer their course by it wherever it might lead, these people are in control of this sort of motion and the impulses that go with it.
