Old but gold. 💖
This was our very first build of Schala and Magus back in 2013. We had just started really committing to cosplay as a hobby and I decided it was finally time to build them. When the photographer asked us to pose I had no idea what to do other than drop to the floor. This was taken on the carpet in front of a table full of boffers and remembering the way people's faces lit up leaves me with a smile. To think that B.C. made this out of how dreadful those builds were warms my heart. I'm glad we could give him an editing project to enjoy. Looking back on these cosplays, I call them dreadful but I'm actually very fond of them still and will always carry the joy they gave me in my heart.
Photographer and glorious editor and true artist: B.C. Valdez.
Cosplayers are my husband and I: Sword and Sorcery Cosplay.

Chapter 41: The Pilgrimage
Ilkay approached Yemoja the moment she returned with Umbria. The rest of the village was gathered behind him. Word had quickly spread that Yemoja had left the safety of the village to see the strange Daemon child that had found their home.
“I’ve kept our people safe as long as I’ve been Elder, just as my father did before me and his before him,” Ilkay said sternly. “You yourself have been the voice of our god just as your mother before you… What would our forefathers say about you risking everything on a half-breed child’s wild story?”
“They would say you need to have faith in the Great Fire’s dream,” Yemoja replied. “We need to have a gathering to discuss the miracle I witnessed.”
Ilkay immediately called for a gathering at the Elder’s house. As the villagers came and gathered, they whispered rumors among themselves, wondering why two Daemon would choose to live away from their own kind and so uncomfortably close to their village. What miracle could Yemoja have witnessed?
Once Ilkay called for order, Yemoja stood up and addressed the crowd. She told them that Umbria had spoken the truth; the young girl did indeed have a magical charm with their sacred symbol and writing in the ancient divine language. More so, the girl carried a small painting depicting her with her parents and the child’s father looked exactly as the ancient emissaries from the sky looked like according to their scriptures.

Ilkay clacked his beak slightly. “Daemon have resembled the emissaries before and besides, how do you not know that the Daemon Ylenia and Umbria say guards the child didn’t give her the holy symbol?”
Yemoja looked at Ilkay and said, “I would have thought the same except the girl knows a song in the sacred language as well. Her guardian had no idea of the significance of her charm or her words. The girl seeks to enter the temple and find answers to how to return home to her father whom she says came from Zeal. I feel we should grant her request.”
Ilkay looked out at the crowd. He could see the concern on everyone’s faces and heard the hushed whispers, filled with fear. They all had faith but it still was worrisome to hear an outsider had arrived with knowledge of their god’s language and claimed to be of the lost sky lands. What did it mean? Was it a sign from their god and if so, what sort of sign? He sighed, “Yemoja, I trust you and have faith in your intentions, but I cannot simply permit an outsider to enter our village and risk everyone’s lives. The danger that others with ill intent may follow is great.”
Yemoja nodded sagely. Ilkay was right to consider the needs of the entire village. A multitude of flames should not be risked for a single ember. And yet, she knew Zarya was something different… Yemoja was certain that Zarya spoke the truth and was descended from the emissaries from the sky that vanished during the fall. After a moment she looked at Ilkay earnestly and said, “I understand your fears, but I would ask you to trust me on this matter.”
She thought for a moment then said, “Perhaps a pilgrimage is in order. Umbria and your son, Koray, are old enough to make the journey to the Northern Pyramid in time for the full moon. I will take the young girl as well. Koray can be an impartial witness to her divinity.”
Ilkay contemplated Yemoja’s suggestion. While many did not leave the safety of the village, there was one exception…. The pilgrimage to the Northern Pyramid that was said to be created by the emissaries to hold great treasures. It was a rite of passage for those coming of age. While in agreement that his son Koray was old enough, Ilkay had always been reluctant to see Umbria as worthy given her half-breed status and petulant attitude and he certainly didn’t like the idea of an outsider going to such a sacred place.
However, he knew that Yemoja was stubborn. Her faith was unwaveringly frustrating for Ilkay. She would not be satisfied until she was proven wrong beyond a shadow of a doubt. Ilkay also considered that maybe the pilgrimage would change Umbria’s attitude for the better. He nodded and said, “Very well. I will tell Koray to prepare.”
Yemoja smiled. “We will fetch the young girl tomorrow morning and depart for the pyramid.”
~o~
Flea stood in the clearing with Zarya in the cold morning air. Zarya had woken him up before dawn and insisted on starting the day as soon as possible because of Yemoja’s promise. Of course, Yemoja had failed to say when in the morning she would return, so Flea and Zarya had been waiting for a while.
And it was beginning to rain.
“I swear if that Therian doesn’t come soon, we’re going back to the keep,” Flea complained.
“Then go,” Yemoja called out as she approached. Umbria and a Kotengu followed closely behind. Yemoja grinned and said. “I will take the Sky Child myself and return when we are done.”
Flea glowered at Yemoja. “So she can see the temple?”
Yemoja shook her head and said, “First, she must make a pilgrimage. There is a pyramid to the north, a couple days' travel, that is surrounded by a magic barrier. It is said only an emissary from the sky can use the Great Fire’s blessing to open the way.”
“So what’s the point in going?” Flea asked. “You walk all the way to some shiny prism you can’t get into? Sounds like a waste of time.”
“We make a pilgrimage there to take the time to contemplate the dream of our god, the Great Fire and what the emissaries told our people of the pyramid’s purpose,” Yemoja replied, seemingly unbothered by Flea’s disrespect for her religion. “Besides if the girl is truly the daughter of an emissary…. then she will break the seal. Once she has proven her divinity to us, then Ilkay will grant his blessing so she can enter the temple.”
Flea kept a calm facade, but in that moment he realized that if Zarya failed to live up to Yemoja’s expectations, then her life was at risk and so was his. Zarya might be currently unable to open the Gate but that didn’t mean she couldn’t do it later. If Yemoja and her village became angry with Zarya, then it was likely they would burn her at the stake or whatever crazy religious people in this era did. He had to help her escape if it came down to it. Flea bit his lip and told Yemoja that he should come along as well.
Yemoja shrugged and smiled. “Of course… Why don’t you two pack some food for the Sky Child and yourself for our journey and come right back. We will wait here.”
Flea nodded and teleported himself and Zarya back to the keep. While Zarya stood there, Flea grabbed a satchel and went to the pantry. As he packed food for them, Zarya looked anxious and pulled at her dress.
“Stay by the Gate?” she asked, concerned. “Mom and Dad?”
“Leave them a note or something,” Flea sighed. He understood her concern that her parents might open the Gate from their time, but he also felt that it would have happened by now if they could. He looked at Zarya and said, “Kid, you wanted the Therians’ help. We are getting it, but we won’t if we don’t go on this trip, okay?”
Zarya frowned slightly and fished a paper out of her bag. After she hastily wrote a note to her parents promising that she would be right back and weighed it down with one of her books on the table, she and Flea teleported back to Yemoja and the others.
~o~O~o~
The moment Flea and Zarya had gone back to get food for the pilgrimage, Koray clacked his beak and said, “You both obfusticated the truth about the Sky Child.”
“In what way?” Yemoja asked calmly. She regarded Koray with a slightly amused expression.
“The Sky Child is a human,” Koray stated sternly. “You omitted that fact to deceive my father. Why would you commit such a sin as to take a human on the Pilgrimage?”
Yemoja shook her head and said. “I did omit the truth, yes… but not out of deception towards your father. The girl has done nothing to earn the vitrole of the village and she does not carry the sins of her kind in her heart. Besides, nowhere in our scriptures does it say it is a sin for a human to witness the pyramid’s presence.”
“She’s human, that’s sin enough!” Koray snapped. “Her kind is not blessed by the Great Fire’s dream. Humans are the enemy of all those who are blessed.”
“Zarya’s no one’s enemy. She’s harmless, Koray,” Umbria remarked. “All she wants is help getting back to where she belongs. Besides, featherbrain, you can see as well as us that she has magic so she is blessed.”
Koray huffed. He trusted Yemoja well enough but it still didn’t sit well with him that she wanted to bring a human, even if she was just a child, to the sacred ruins. Still, Yemoja seemed certain that this girl was special and he had been asked by his father to bear witness to her supposed divinity.
They didn’t have to wait long for Flea and Zarya to return. Zarya practically bounced in place with excitement while Flea looked like he’d rather be anywhere else. Yemoja turned to Koray and took one of the young Kotengu’s packs and shoved it at Flea. “Carry this. Spreading the burden will ease the journey.”
Flea glared slightly, but took the pack. It was a bit heavy so he subtly shifted his form to be stronger and gestured for Zarya to follow. He wasn’t fond of the idea of hiking given that he had endured almost a month of it before settling down in the keep, but he reminded himself that he would do anything to get back to his time and salvage his life as best he could.

I can't wait to have my new Schala ready to wear. I've been addicted to getting this audio right for her and I never seem to pull it off. I still love it though. Fun face: This cosplay is actually my faire garb! It's a mega set from Moresca and a friend of mine took me right to this one because it felt so much like Schala. Knowing that I got to use it for Schala makes me so happy. I also have a matching mask for it!
