you know, one thing that's really fun about playing chrono trigger is seeing so much of undertale/deltarune in it? the humour. the sprite work. the way that fights are kind of always a puzzle. THE HUMOUR. the fucking phenomenal music and how it sets the mood perfectly every time. the moments of choice and the weighty feeling of consequence every time you make a choice....
i'm not doing it justice, but thinking about undertale now, so much of it feels like a love letter to chrono trigger in terms of tone, visuals and gameplay. there's not any one-to-one comparisons i can really make, it just feels super familiar, in this comfy way?

Hey, this is gonna sound really weird because I literally have no clue whatsoever
Were there ever transgender video game characters in video games before Chrono Trigger's Flea? Because it's been awhile since I played that game but I distinctly remember Flea being a villain who presented fully as a woman but used he/him pronouns, which I don't even know if that could particularly be considered transgender, but for the time period I think it rates.
I'm just wondering if there was anyone before Flea because my knowledge of early video games is kind of spotty.

Chrono Trigger had some really solid translations, Woolsey's best work. He captured the spirit that the original authors wanted, rather than the lifeless result you'd get from a more literal translation.
The three sages were originally Gasshu, Hasshu, and Bosshu. I'm told that to the Japanese ear, these have a vaguely "Chinese mountain hermit" ring, but they're just kind of silly in English, so using the traditional names for the biblical three wisemen was a great touch.
Magus' henchmen were Vinegar, Soysau, and Mayonnai, a trio of tasteless fiends; their names were a little too long for the technical limitations of the SNES, so they became the trio of tone-deaf fiends: Ozzie, Slash and Flea.
It does have a change I really don't like. The Masamune is Granleon in Japanese, a much more European name for an obviously European sword. It's senseless. If he had to change it, why not Excalibur?
And finally the 魔神器 (majinki), aka Mammon Machine
Tumblr media
Majinki could be considered a portmanteau, but of a type that's transparent to a Japanese reader. 魔 means something like evil spirit or magic, same character as in mahou (as in mahou shojou: magical girls). 神 is usually said "kami" outside of compound words, it's the first character in Shinto (pronunciation changes at the beginning of a word), and refers to the gods/spirits that they venerate. 器 has meanings like tool/vessel/utensil etc.
魔神 (majin) is often translated as "devil". Of course: it's a god of evil spirits and magic. (Fun note; 魔人 is pronounced the same way but means magic/evil person; you might recognize it from Dragonball's majin bu, or a race that's ubiquitous in Isekai.) 神器 (jinki) is what Velma says is a "sacred treasure", a thing in which the kami dwell. Edit to add: to help hammer in the meaning this word would convey to a Japanese player the Imperial Regalia of Japan are called 三種の神器.
You can't convey all that in English, especially not by calling it either "evil/magic sacred treasure" or "devil vessel/tool".
Mammon Machine may lose the heavy "magic energy" association (given by story context anyways), but it finds another way to be slightly ambiguous about it's devilish associations; drawing in extra associations of greed? Piece de resistance.

No Small Feat Art pt. 11 - Seige of the Tower of the Tomb
By request, I’m gonna show off some of the artwork for No Small Feat, a Midgaheim story my friends and I told through the TTRPG system Fabula Ultima. I drew a lot of characters and monsters for it, and my friends - in particular, @dragonzzilla, @scatha5, and @dinosaurana - helped line and color them so we’d have cute little sprites to use on our online battlemaps, which really helped sell the whole “we’re playing an oldschool turn based RPG” vibe that Fabula Ultima’s system is going for.
This is the final part, the end of No Small Feat! Obviously we're going to look at the final boss, but first, we have to talk about her flunkies.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Given that the Fabula Ultima game system is based primarily on JRPGs like Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger, I felt that it was customary to make sure the heinous arch villain had at least one crew of goofy, lovable henchmen. A Sephiroth is not complete without the Turks, a Magus is not complete without Slash, Flea, and Ozzie, et cetera. So Maelys had a quartet of mercenaries in her employ, who very much were not in this for loyalty to her or her ideology, but rather because they needed the money and most people don't hire clowns in Midgaheim since they're a variety of cambion (half-demons). These ladies are The Jester's Jape, entertainers, carnies, thieves, and ne'er do wells. Their leader is Scarlette, the harlequin. their mage is Bianca, the Pierrot. Their muscle is Azurite, the Buffoon. And their wildcard is Obsidianne, the Mime. I introduced them a little later in the campaign than intended (both because I didn't have finished art of them and because it took a lot of revisions for me to be satisfied with their moveset as minibosses), but they made a lot with the screentime they were given, and hey, cambions don't have a built-in expiration date, so nothing's stopping me from using them again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After befriending the clowns in their third and final encounter with them, our heroes mobilized to the top of the tomb tower where Maelys was waiting, having just graverobbed the last crown jewel and, with the aid of the seven princes of Hell itself, forged two false crown jewels to complete a crown of her own and become the new queen of the country.
Sadly for her, the forgeries didn't prove adequate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As all the rivers of magic running through Engelsex convered inside her through the warped crown on her head, Maelys was overwhelmed by their power and twisted into a hideous shape that reflected her inner malice. Our heroes proceeded to beat the shit out of her, as you do when you've done all the sidequests in an RPG and got all the overpowered loot that comes with them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But no good JRPG boss would only have ONE transformation, so of course Maelys crashed harder than a Resident Evil boos and turned into a nightmarish beast, one that was further warped to resemble two other monsters who had contact with the crown jewels - Kaboldt von Hubert's doppelganger, and the Ravening Beast. Our heroes summoned their closest allies - Leonie, George, and Jack - and also the Jester's Jape, why not, and destroyed the evil wannabe queen once and for all.
And so the day was saved, a new crown was forged, and a worthy successor was found for the throne. To know more than that, you'd have to watch the campaign, or, like, wait several years for me to transcribe it into a book if I ever get around to it. I might, honestly. I miss Leonie.
As a final treat, here are some loose sketches of character designs for the campaign, some of which never got the finished penncil treatment:
Tumblr media
Figuring out Kaboldt's doppelganger look took a lot of experimentation.
Tumblr media
Same goes for the Ravening Beast, who went through SO many designs before I settled on one that worked for me. One of his early designs got reused as Big Bubba Bugbear.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The jester's Jape went through a lot of concepts too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I had loose ideas to give George, Jack, and Leonie costume changes for their cameos in the final boss fight, but didn't end up having enough time to finalize them. We get to see George in his non-dragonslayer armor, Jack looking a bit less frail, and Leonie sporting the dragon-themed armor the PCs gifted her at the end of the Menagerie arc.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh, and I didn't know where to put it, but at one point the PCs met, and later robbed, Leonie's dad, which meant I had to give him a character design. I tried to make sure his clothes were as tasteful as those that would be worn by a rich medieval merchant who had access to magic dyes.
There was also merchant character that was intended to be a one-off named Long Lankin that the players and I kind of fell in love with who I drew sketches of, but those got lost in my big computer hullabaloo this summer, so unfortunately I no longer have them to share. But I liked him enough that he'll probably show up in another Midgaheim story one of these days.

Sidequests
After reviving Crono, the party still has more work to do before using their newfound motivation to defeat Lavos. Everyone (except Crono and Ayla) has unfinished business to attend to across the ages.
(As always, if you have any suggestions on wording, balancing, or changing everything about the abilities, please let me know! And if you do not want your artwork used for this, also please let me know!)
Tumblr media
Here we go!
Tumblr media
In the Middle Ages and Present, there's a barren desert where there was once a lush forest. Speaking with a young woman who lives nearby, the party learns that the desiccation of the environment is due to an overabundance of monsters. They defeat the monsters, but more work needs to be done, over many human generations. Robo volunteers, as it is his mission to help humans. He revitalizes the land and is enshrined and venerated for his efforts.
This card represents Robo's various tasks in reviving an entire forest. I don't need to explain each one at this point. I'm not too happy with the red ability, so if you have a better suggestion, go for it.
As for the incredible artwork, it was done by Tumblr user @anthonyvaccarelli and it can be seen here.
Tumblr media
Magus needs to rein in his former generals, who have since relocated to Ozzie's old fortress. Honestly, I'm not sure what the real purpose of this was, but I like to think that Magus wanted to clean up his mess with these three.
I didn't want to do too much work with the generals, so they all went on one card. They don't have the boss mechanic, which is a little weird. I don't even know what they'd drop, and for whom. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.
The artwork was done by Uncle Snowy, Tomoshi, and DeepInk, which didn't really fit on the artist line. It was for the Chrono Trigger Musical, by Man on the Internet, seen here.
Tumblr media
One of the most gut-wrenching parts of Chrono Trigger is the Origin of Machines questline. Robo needs to go to where he and the other robots were made. What he finds is a nightmare beyond words. Humans are being processed to be made into machines. His former friend attacks him and he discovers that the administrator of the facility, the Mother Brain, has been reprogramming robots around the world to kill all humans. Robo needs to destroy not only his dearest companion, but also his creator in order to keep humans alive on the dying planet.
This is just a top-down card representing the humans being processed. People go in, robots come out. It's an enchantment artifact because even though this represents an event, the event it represents is the machine supremacy. I went with Servo tokens because they're fairly well-established in Magic, but also, I couldn't find artwork of the robot enemies.
The artwork on this card, however, is done by Yuto Sakurai, one of my favorite CT fan artists. I can't believe I hadn't used his artwork before, but here we are. You can see the original piece here.
Tumblr media
This is a quest that makes full use of having access to a time machine. In the future, the party comes across a cave housing a shrine to the Kingdom of Zeal's exhausted Sun Stone. Before they can see it, though, they have to face off against the Sun of the Sun, its puzzling guardian.
I made this card so long ago! It's very top-down, but I like it. It's meant to be hard to kill, but worth the effort in the end.
The art was done by Enair and posted on Amino.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Prominence is a photo of a real scientific phenomenon, the blue flame whirl, taken by Sriram Hariharan. Sun Stone is a cartoony fantasy object, drawn by Seo EagleSage.
Tumblr media
Frog also has unfinished business. The ghost of Cyrus is haunting an old manor on Choras, and the party helps clear the monsters so that the spirit can rest in peace. Cyrus tells his old friend how proud he is of the man he's become, and the closure allows Frog to use the Masamune to its fullest potential.
The mechanics of this card are very simple. Maybe a little too simple. I'm also not sure about the mana cost. The ability is very much in white's piece of the color wheel, which makes it a little awkward that players can't use it in a Frog Commander deck.
There's such little fanart out there of this particular quest, so I went with a scene from the opening cinematic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finally, Marle's and her father have to repair their frayed relationship, but the chancellor keeps making things worse between them. Ultimately, he attempts a coup and it's revealed that he's the descendant of Yakra, defeated four hundred years ago. The party defeats the grudge-holding Mystic and presents evidence that the King did not sell Guardia's national treasure - the Rainbow Shell. Melchior then fashions gear out of a little bit of the shell, and it's some of the best in the game.
I made the Rainbow card over a year ago! This was before I started posting the cards in chronological order. Here's the description from the Imgur gallery: Crono's most iconic weapon. I wanted an equipment that got better the more colors you were able to pay into it. I think this can be tweaked to be a little better, if not less interesting. We'll see.
As for the art, once I saw this piece by Ahakarin, my jaw dropped and I knew a card needed to be made.
I also made the PrismSpecs card a really long time ago, but never posted it. I love the protection it grants based on colors, but I'm very proud of that flavor text. I think it's funny, at any rate.
The art on PrismSpecs is done by Lushie. It was the most colorful and cartoony art I'd ever used for a Magic card up to that point.
And that's that for the sidequests! It's not like there are two more coming up or anything like that.

Hihi 😃👋🏾
For any of the chrono trigger cast:
1. Canon you outright reject
3. An obscure headcanon
We'll just go through the list... Everyone: Whatever happened to them between Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. Never happened. Crono Canon rejection: He's mute. Obscure Headcanon: He speaks in this guy's voice (LINK) Marle Canon Rejection: Chrono Cross didn't happen. Kato LIES. Obscure Headcanon: Marle is her mother's middle name (and hers). Lucca Canon Rejection: That she didn't think to craft prosthetics for her mom. Obscure Headcanon: She's autistic/ADHD. Frog Canon Rejection: He speaks Ye Olde English (Yes i know this was 'fixed' in the later releases) or has that god-awful Vegeta hair in the anime cutscenes. (LONG HAIR GLENN FOR LIFE!) Obscure Headcanon: He's from Choras Robo Canon Rejection: Again, Chrono Cross. I will die on this hill. Obscure Headcanon: He would sound like Data from Star Trek. Magus Canon Rejection: That whole outfit. Plus what the DS did to him in the secret ending. Obscure Headcanon: Boy is Autistic AF. Unfortunately learned to mask by hanging out with Ozzie and co. Flea Canon Rejection: That outfit. Sorry, Akira Toriyama. Obscure Headcanon: AFAB, despite use of He/Him pronouns, is more comfortable being GNC/Gender-Nonconforming.

My guesses as to why the bosses excluded from the boss rush in Chrono Trigger were excluded.
Yakra, Mud Imp: Too reliant on the enemy in question being mobile.
Krawlie: Not fought at a fixed point in the storyline.
R Series: Six identical foes, which are pretty much Mooks in Boss Clothing.
Slash, Flea: Fought in a non-fixed order.
Ozzie: A puzzle boss who can’t really be recreated in Lavos form.
Nizbel II: Redundant with Nizbel.
Golem, Golem Twins: No idea, but probably because Golem doesn’t require you to win and the Golem Twins are two identical foes.
Dalton, Dalton Plus: No idea.
Golem Boss: A joke boss.
As for all the other bosses, they’re optional, and they presumably only wanted to include mandatory bosses in the boss rush.

FFXIV fan made Raid time! I would love to see a Chrono Trigger Raid for FFXIV!
I have a few ideas for this, because it can work several ways. The first way is the Full Party Raid, with the impetus being trying to get at Lavos and the last three fights being Lavos' three forms. However, this is extremely similar to Omega and makes less sense because a Lavos would use fights from the world it was on, not the one it spawned from.
However, an Alliance Raid could be interesting. Raid 1: Magus' Castle. At the entryway, fight a small battle, then you go down one of the two halls (either its randomly chosen each run or predetermined, would need playtesting) at the end of which you fight Slash or Flea. After winning that fight, you take a Shortcut back to the entryway to go fight the other one.
Then, after another Shortcut to the entrance, you take a teleport to a new area leading up to a "fight" against Ozzie. In the original, you had to strike levers to open the right holes, but couldn't target anything but the one you needed and Ozzie, who would sit under a shield and counter every attack. In this, it would probably be best to have him occasionally shoot out attacks and summon adds with conveyor belts until all the levers have been "defeated."
Finally, you face Magus, whose fight uses the Barrier Change mechanic, but tweaked a bit. In this version, he picks a Role (Healer, Tank, DPS) and fights like he's that role. Anyone not that role deals half damage to him, people with that role deal double (alternately, he's immune to damage from Roles he's not); he shuffles to a new Barrier Role after certain damage thresholds and they can repeat. While a Tank or Healer, he continually summons adds, which are meant to split the attention of the Tanks and Healers or else the DPS could get overwhelmed. Once he's halfway, he changes to a frenzy mode of spells, no longer summoning adds, blasting out Dark Bombs and Dark Mists and such, with Dark Matter as an Enrage attack.
Second Raid: Tyrano Palace. Rather more straightforward than the original (I always got lost), the three bosses are Nizbel, the Black Tyrano, and Azala.
Raid the third: the Undersea Palace (though the Black Omen is tempting). Bosses are: Dalton and his minions, the Mammon Machine, and Lavos, all stages.
I have a list of Chrono Trigger and Cross based weapons that could drop from this Raid idea, but that's at home and I'm not.

Crono led the way down the stairs. He, Marle and Glenn could hear a low chanting voice echoing throughout the corridor. Strange words that seemed to be in a lost language. Reaching the bottom of the stairs, the group found themselves at an archway.
Before they entered, Marle whispered her healing spell to heal Glenn’s injuries. The three of them readied their weapons and exchanged glances. This was it, there was no turning back now.
As they stepped forward, a pair of sickly blue-green wisps of fire flared into existence. Each step created another pair of wisps. The chanting continued.
“Dal zumal phara-lo Ierra… Cast open the gates between heaven and earth and in exchange for this world’s life-“
Suddenly, more wisps flared up, creating a pathway to an altar covered in red and black candles. A terrifying bronze statue of some sort of demonic entity stood behind the altar and chanting before all of this was a large, green-skinned Mystic.
He was a rotund yet imposing figure, dark purple flowing robes barely touched the floor as he hovered above the ground and his reptilian tail swished and flicked. There was no doubt that the Demon King Ozzie stood before them.
Stopping his spell, Ozzie turned to face Crono, Marle and Glenn. He glared at them and gritted his teeth.
“So that fool Slash couldn’t stop a group of lowly humans from entering my sanctum,” he hissed. “I knew he couldn’t be trusted…”
“I bet he let you past,” Ozzie continued. He clenched his fists and shouted maniacally, “Yes, he did, didn’t he?! A traitor like that miserable Flea and everyone else! Well, they’ll just burn along side the humans! Yes, you will all burn and die!!!”
A burst of black flames exploded around Ozzie, causing Crono, Marle and Glenn to stumble back as they dodged the fire. The Demon King wasted no time casting another spell at them, lightning crackling everywhere.
